Finding "Your" Unique Voice O
ne of my favorite TV shows these days is undoubtedly NBC’s The Voice. Generally speaking, I’m not a big watcher of television, but this show has captured my attention. Singers go through four rounds of competition, starting with a blind audition and ending with a live performance. In the blind audition, the coaches can’t see the contestants, so their decisions are based solely on the vocal performances, not on the contestants’ appearance. From the first round to the last, the show demonstrates a positive and uplifting message. At each stage, the artists get one chance to give the performance of a lifetime in order to move on to the next level. Contestants are instantaneously exposed to fans around the world. Some may very well be on their way to a great career. For others, their time in the spotlight is limited. In Outliers: The Story of Success, author Malcolm Gladwell discusses the 10,000-hour rule, which states that in order to master a given task, you need to practice it for about 10,000 hours. Whether I am rooting for the next winner of The Voice or seeking expert advice from a natural health practitioner, I believe that those who have committed
10,000 hours of practice to their field have the best chance of successfully reaching their audience. Our magazine invites various experts to help us educate our readers. In this issue, we introduce “Synergy Voices,” a panel of holistic and natural health practitioners and business owners who are delighted to share their knowledge, research and wisdom with you. Also new to our Spring 2014 issue are the editorial sections, created to enhance the flow of content for readers and advertisers. Sections included in this and future issues are Alternative Health, Environment, Fitness, Food & Nutrition, Lifestyles, Personal Growth, Spirituality and Travel. Certain singers stand out on The Voice because of the way their unique sound makes us feel. Daisy Harpe, well-known sound therapist, stands out in her field of expertise as well, with the unique and powerful healing tool of sound therapy. Enjoy her story in “Peaceful Sounds,” written by editor Susan Fitzgerald (p. 16). Special thanks to Kyle Groves, executive chef at Catch & the Oyster Bar in Calgary, Alberta (p. 24); Colleen Nunes, spa director at the L Spa & Wellness Centre in Grande Prairie, Alberta (p. 11); and Andrew Ruhland, founder of Integrated Wealth Management in Calgary (p. 8) for their articles on the environment, our focus for this Spring issue.

Improve your bottom line by reducing your own wasteful practices F or many years, a pitched battle has raged between the forces of mega-capitalism and environmental groups. Since all conflict is intrinsically divisive, most people have been compelled to choose between capitalism and environmental protection. Both sides have acted superior, denying anything insightful that the other side has said, and physical violence and property destruction have even erupted occasionally. War has no winners. What if there is another approach? From my perspective, the mind and heart are similar to a parachute in that they operate most effectively when they are both open. If you personally decide to not choose one of the sides in this battle, but instead consciously focus on achieving multiple positive outcomes, it becomes obvious that environmental stewardship is smart for everyone, whether you are in business or not. Overconsumption through wasteful practices is clearly a problem that needs to be solved at all levels. Let’s look at some ways that businesses and individuals can take meaningful actions that make both financial and environmental sense. Exceptional business coaches, like Chris Niles of BalancePoint Partners in Millarville, Alberta, know that better decision making results in less waste, greater profits and reduced negative environmental impact. Stress is lowered for everyone, and expensive wasteful mistakes are reduced. Individual coaching styles vary, but the most effective coaches help businesses to accurately identify the core problem or challenge, foster a culture of creativity to generate possible solutions and filter out the noise that over-thinking can produce. While managing individuals’ ego-based attachments to the best ideas (especially when they’re not the boss’s ideas!), effective coaches help leaders think through the full effects of any course of action and make mindful decisions to target their actions to produce the greatest outcomes. This process is the modern version of “measure twice and cut once.”
But what if you’re not a business owner or key decision maker in a large organization? The same concepts apply to both business and the population at large. When your principles are sound, they cannot fight you. Environmental speaker, author and consultant Claudette Lacombe at Umbel Communications in Calgary is very passionate about nurturing the environmental awareness of both public policy and business decision makers. She’s also clear that each individual who makes environmentally focused changes to lifestyle habits contributes positively to making our resources go further. Claudette’s advice is very succinct, practical and realistic to implement: l Begin with awareness; notice how much you consume—water, fuel, consumer goods and especially food. Start paying attention to what goes in your garbage and recycling bins. l Take small steps, starting with the easiest and working your way to bigger ideas. Claudette suggests placing an open one-quart mason jar in the tank of old toilets, actively choosing consumer products with less packaging and using your own permanent water bottle instead of buying disposable plastic. l Support local organizations that focus on taking action toward change. You can visit the Alberta ENGO Directory (www.aendirectory.ca), which lists non-profit environmental organizations, and pick one to support. Government grants tend to focus on raising awareness, but don’t provide funding to hire the human resources necessary, so these groups appreciate your support to create the action they promote. Whether or not we’re in business, we are all individual decision makers whose habits collectively determine our communities’ consumption footprints. As we consciously take action in our own lives, we make a meaningful impact on how long the human race can thrive on our living planet. Adding mindfulness to the mix reduces haste—and haste makes waste, right? Environmental stewardship is smart for everyone.

Five Ways to Eco-Drive Reduce your fuel consumption and save money A ccelerate gently. The harder you accelerate, the more fuel you consume. In the city, you can conserve fuel by easing onto the accelerator pedal gently and gradually. Pretend there’s an egg under the gas pedal and an open cup of coffee on the dash. Try to drive without breaking the shell or spilling the coffee and you’ll be good to go. Maintain a steady speed. Be consistent. Unintentional dips in speed and sudden bursts of acceleration take a toll on your tank and your wallet. In fact, tests show that varying your speed up and down between 75 km/h and 85 km/h every eighteen seconds can increase your fuel use by 20 percent. Use cruise control whenever possible. Anticipate traffic. Read the road ahead, anticipate road disruptions, monitor the movements of pedestrians and other vehicles and keep a comfortable distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Coast to decelerate. Coasting to a stop with your foot off the pedal is like driving for free. By anticipating traffic slowdowns as early as possible, you can decrease your speed, conserve fuel and save
money by simply taking your foot off the accelerator. Today, most vehicles are equipped with fuel-injection systems that automatically shut off the flow of fuel to the engine when the accelerator is fully released.
Avoid high speeds. Even if you have a need for speed, slow
down. Most cars, vans, SUVs and pickup trucks operate most fuel efficiently when travelling between 50 and 80 km/h. Anything above this optimal speed zone and vehicles consume increasingly more fuel the faster they go. For example, if it takes $10 worth of fuel to drive a certain distance at 100 km/h, it would cost $12 to travel that same distance at 120 km/h. That’s like throwing a toonie out the window every 100 km.

your foot off the pedal is like driving for free."

he world has become intensely small and we are globally connected like we have never been before. No longer are we as a society blind to the injustices taking place in the world. Instead, we are on the frontlines fighting for what we believe in. Climate change has been a pressing matter for some time; reducing our carbon footprint, fighting deforestation and preserving plant and animal species are taking centre stage. Change starts with us. We need to take action today to take care of tomorrow—we owe it to ourselves and to the generations to come. What are you doing today to support the cause? It sounds like a daunting task, but it’s much easier than you may think. Use your buying power! Yes, by making smarter choices today, you are taking care of yourself and future generations. Look good and feel better knowing you are making a change. Many cosmetic companies are gearing themselves towards sustainability and pledging their commitment in various ways. One of the greenest companies out there, Éminence Organic Skin Care, focuses on sustainable farming and green practices. From harnessing solar power and wind energy to using geothermal heating, each step of the manufacturing process is designed to help reduce the company’s carbon footprint. Planting and harvesting are done manually, and no harsh chemicals or toxic pesticides are used. The boxes are made from recycled materials, and packing chips are made from corn, which allows them to be discarded by dissolving them in hot water. Éminence has
launched its Forests for the Future program, pledging its commitment to the environment by planting a tree for every product sold. Although green companies are at the forefront of efforts to protect the earth, another important way to use your buying power for positive change is by purchasing cruelty-free products. Are you aware of the injustices done to innocent animals to enhance your beauty? The Leaping Bunny program established by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics certifies companies that do not use animals for testing cosmetics or their ingredients. Look for the Leaping Bunny logo and put all doubts to rest about whether the company you are supporting is ethical. Jane Iredale, a cosmetics manufacturer, does not test its products on animals or use ingredients that have been tested on animals. The company has even gone so far as to refuse to sell into markets that require testing on animals. You can have the best of both worlds: quality products with strong ethical values. As a spa specialist, I have worked with the products mentioned above and recommend them. Buying from companies such as these helps to enforce and promote sustainability. Let’s take it one step further. Many spas and wellness centres not only treat the mind, body and soul, but are also kind to the environment in their product selection and daily practices. The holistic approach focuses on treating the whole rather than focusing on an individual component. By choosing a spa that uses ethical products, you can rest with ease, knowing that your natural choices are not only personally but also environmentally beneficial. We need to commit to educating the leaders of tomorrow, for these valuable lessons need to be passed from one generation to the next. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Spring 2014 l Guided Synergy 11

peaceful sounds with Daisy Harpe PhotoS by PRAIRIE RANGER PHOTOGRAPHY
A
visit to Sedona, Arizona, in 2010 sparked Daisy Harpe’s interest in a therapeutic modality used for relaxation and stress relief. After attending a session that touched on sound therapy, Harpe was inspired to explore the topic further. Sound therapy is based on the theory that everything vibrates, including our bodies, and that all energy possesses a vibrational frequency. Depending on the sound, the vibration and frequency received by our bodies and ears can have a strong positive or negative effect on the body and mind. Harpe, owner of Ground with Sound, describes sound therapy as “a technique which uses music, sounds, tones, vibration and breath to create a grounding meditative space. Vibrations used in sound therapy can aid in reducing anxiety and emotional stress and in lowering blood pressure and heart rate.”
woods. Heading to the community hall on Saturday evenings for square dancing was a highlight of the week for Harpe, as she enjoyed dancing, singing and having fun with her neighbours.
Harpe had a vision of building a unique dome-shaped studio for sound therapy, and the secluded and peaceful acreage on which she lives provided the perfect location. Her vision took shape after a process of internal searching and inquiring, reflecting on the questions “What is my purpose?” and “Why am I here and how can I can I help others?” Harpe experienced the effects of sound vibration in a dome building in California, which confirmed to her that this truly was her path to follow. With the support of her husband of 17 years, Daisy started creating her vision and building her dream.
Harpe recalls a pivotal time when she was 17 years old. “My foundation was shaken to the core. Everything that was solid in my life changed within three months. My mother passed away, my father moved away because of health reasons and I left my childhood home to live with my older brother and his family.”
Harpe has spent the majority of her life in the County of Grande Prairie in Alberta’s Peace Country. She grew up in the small farming community of Demmitt, where she was the youngest in a family of seven. Helping on the small family farm was a part of everyday life; everyone had chores to do. Leisure time was spent playing by the creek or walking or skiing in the
“As I look back on my life, it certainly wasn’t a smooth, easy journey,” explains Harpe, “but then again that is what life is all about. We all have the lessons and the hardships. It just shows up in different ways for each person. You get dealt the cards and you play them the best you can with what you know.” Harpe says, “I am thankful for a childhood that was rooted in strength of family, a belief in God, strong work ethics and cultural traditions. My family background gave me my foundation to build my life on, and when I stumbled along my path, I remembered to lean into my past to help support me in picking myself up and moving forward.”
This certainly was a huge game changer. Harpe says, “At the time I continued through each day and then years, not realizing the immensity of what I had lost. For quite a few years I went kind of numb and my life was not heading in a very healthy direction for my body, mind or soul. In my mid-20s I started questioning my lifestyle and began making better choices to connect me with a healthier way of living—both physically and spiritually.” When she was 27, Harpe’s life path took another turn with the opportunity to work in the oil and gas industry as a field and

plant operator. Under its equal-opportunity program, PetroCanada hired two females to work in the male-dominated field. “This was huge for me. I landed a good job; I was making good money with company benefits and was able to get my feet on the ground. I was finally able to buy my own place and have some feeling of security.” But even with this job security Harpe still felt empty and unsatisfied. The pay and lifestyle were good, but she kept thinking that there had to be more. Then another life-changing event took place. Harpe was out on her morning rounds, doing the regular procedure of checking oil wells, when a well head compressor exploded, leaving her with second- and third-degree burns on her hands and face. “The crazy part is I knew this was going to happen. I never liked those well head compressors and even that morning, as I started the compressors after doing the routine checks, I remember thinking to myself ‘Just watch this thing blow.’ I pushed the start button and watched the gauges level out, thinking all was well. As I turned to walk out of the building, the compressor exploded.” It was after this accident that Harpe really started paying attention to what she refers to as “that little voice inside that talks to us, our intuition.” She reflects, “There had been other major events. One was a car accident where I ‘knew’ but didn’t listen and sure enough, the ‘voice’ was giving me direction. I remember my father telling me in his last years of life ‘You know the answer; you just have to get quiet and listen. The answer is always inside of you.’” Looking back, Harpe has become more aware of how everything has led her to what she is doing today. Finding and buying the acreage was another example of letting go and letting the river of life bring her to where she needed to be. Harpe recalls, “When my husband and I decided to start a life together, we searched for a place to buy and everything we looked at just wasn’t right. I then suggested to leave it be and not try to push this to happen, and by chance we found this place three months later.” When they bought their land, Harpe knew that it was special.
18 www.guidedsynergy.ca
She feels this place came to them to share with others and to help people find some respite from their busy and stressful lives. For six years she operated a successful bed-and-breakfast out of her home. Everyone who stayed there has shared that they really love the peacefulness and tranquility. Harpe suggests that this comes from the natural world. “Anyone who drives in along our winding, tree-lined driveway has commented that they can feel themselves relax and let go. People always remark on how beautiful and restful it is here.” How does Harpe feel about her life now? “I feel great! I love what I do and I really do feel like I am making a positive difference. I look back at my life and see that every step, every fall, every heartache and disappointment has brought me to this point. Had I not experienced the tough and sad parts, the times when I wanted to throw in the towel and skip out of life, I would not be able to relate to others or empathize to the degree I feel I do.” Harpe feels that her life experiences, together with facilitating sound therapy, enable her to help people relax and feel good. She says, “I offer a safe, quiet space in a beautiful dome nestled within the healing energy of nature, a place where people can connect to their own stillness and allow a release of stress. Even if they just say to me ‘I feel so rested but alive’ and leave the Sound Dome feeling in a better state than when they came in, then I feel I have helped.” She goes on to say, “If people experience a release of stress or emotional or physical pain and they go back to their everyday life without having the urge to yell at the kids or kick the dog—even if it is just for the next few hours that they feel calm and relaxed— then that’s the start of a ripple of peace flowing outward from them and affecting the one next to them in a more positive way. I love what Mother Teresa said: ‘Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.’” Susan Fitzgerald is a freelance editor, writer and researcher based in Vancouver. She works on everything from picture books to dissertations, and her work has appeared in publications ranging from community newsletters to academic journals. I just finished this novel a few days ago and my only regret is that I didn’t dive into it sooner when it landed on my desk. One Great Year is an outstanding novel for first-time authors Tamara Veitch and Rene DeFazio, and you can tell they put in the time and effort to really bring their ideas to life with engaging characters, plenty of action and fascinating backstory elements that make you think, even as you read furiously to find out what happens next. As for the story, it revolves around Marcus, an advanced youth in the last days of Atlantis, or Atitala in the novel, who is one of the ones chosen to be an Emissary. Their mission is to go forward into the next ages as bearers of light and wisdom as the
"...this is so well done it just sits in the background, where it sparks thoughts in the back of your mind." world descends from a golden age down to a dark, dangerous iron age. But Marcus, suspicious of a former childhood friend named Helghul, witnesses a disturbing dark ceremony and decides to take special potion to retain his memories from life to life—the same one Helghul took as he sets out to bring darkness and chaos to the world. The action carries forward through the ages as Marcus tries his best to help the world while keeping Helghul in check and seeking out his fellow Emissary and soul mate, Theron, in every life he can. But the weight of his full recall and the neverending battle with the forces of darkness are wearing him down. In One Great Year Veitch and DeFazio do something ambitious I’ve not seen any other

first-time authors tackle: melding together present-day science, particularly quantum physics, with ancient wisdom, and showing the many places the two meet and even overlap. The best part is that this is so well done it just sits in the background, where it sparks thoughts in the back of your mind. By the time you finish this novel, which is
a hefty one, you are gently led to see the world in a whole new way. And that new world-view brings up questions, like how much of this is real and what does it really mean to you. Reading One Great Year might well inspire you to do a little research, easily enough done with the footnotes and bibliography the authors include, and it might encourage you to stop a moment and rethink your own life and the choices you’ve made. And if nothing else, it will entertain you with a kaleidoscope of times, places, cultures and a whole lot of action as the forces of good and evil face off for the fate of the world in this spiritual thriller of a story. Either way, pick up a copy and settle in for a wonderful ride. Carolyn Cooke is a reporter for Surrey Now newspaper.

Is it safe? W
e all know that exercise improves muscle tone, strength and endurance, but is it safe during pregnancy? Both the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend that pregnant women include exercise in their healthy lifestyle, as long as they have no medical or obstetrical complications. ACOG suggests a total of 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise every day, or on most days, throughout pregnancy. Exercise in pregnancy can ease or eliminate aches and pains, leg cramps and circulatory challenges; strengthen pelvic floor muscles; and aid in the prevention of insomnia and pregnancy blues. In addition, exercise provides us with a better self-image, prepares our bodies for the physical journey of labour and birth, helps us retain our pre-pregnancy fitness levels and makes returning to our prepregnancy shape achievable.

The Importance of Sustainable Seafood Enjoy your meal without harming the ocean A
s we enter the warmer months, we naturally start to look for lighter fare when deciding what to eat. As the executive chef of Catch & the Oyster Bar, I’m naturally drawn to seafood. Not just any seafood though—only fresh and sustainable seafood.

stocked and able to feed future generations. The Ocean Wise site (www.oceanwise.ca) lists restaurants and retailers that participate in the program, and has a database of recommended seafood choices. To simplify shopping, Ocean Wise has developed an iPhone app (available through the Ocean Wise website or the Apple Store) that shows you where Ocean Wise seafood is available within your city. Your next question might be “What are the best seafood choices I can make?” Shop and eat based on what’s in season. Different species become available to eat at different times throughout the year. Fresh BC halibut is usually available from March until October. Fresh wild salmon is in season during the summer, while shellfish like mussels, clams and oysters are available year round but are typically at their very best in the coldest winter months. When looking for seafood out of season, look for products labelled “FAS,” which indicates that they were frozen at sea to preserve their freshness. BC sablefish is an incredible choice that is almost always found frozen at sea. Protecting the oceans doesn’t mean giving
"Shop and eat based on what's in season." Fresh seafood is a no brainer, but many of us don’t automatically think about how important sustainability is. Although Alberta is landlocked, overfishing impacts all of us, no matter where we live. Did you know that overfishing is the biggest issue facing our oceans today, and that we have already taken 90 percent of large predatory fish out of the oceans? Or that recent studies have indicated that without changes to how consumers choose seafood, the world’s fisheries will collapse by 2048? Most people don’t. As a consumer, you play a role in this issue. It’s important to ask yourself how you can 24 www.guidedsynergy.ca

Well-managed population, with a comprehensive management plan based on current research. 3. H arvested in a way that limits unintentional catching of other species. 4. If we all start to respect the oceans by following guidelines like the ones set up by Ocean Wise, we will continue to enjoy seafood far into the future. Taking Feng Shui on the Road Enhance chi wherever you go M
any of us love to get away from home at least a few times a year. The break from our everyday routines helps us to see the world from a different perspective and to recharge our batteries. But while we enjoy the adventure or relaxation of travel, once we step out of our own homes, the energy around us is largely out of our hands. Luckily, whether your ideal vacation involves a five-star hotel, a stay with friends, tenting in the great outdoors or a trip in the RV, you can easily create great feng shui wherever you go, keeping you comfortable even when you’ve purposely stepped out of your comfort zone. Always begin by formulating a simple conscious intention to travel safely. Visualize your car, RV, airplane, boat or other mode of transport wrapped in a bubble of white light. On setting out, I always say a little prayer of gratitude for both my safety and the safety of those around me. Traveling in an RV is a bit like taking your home on the road, so it is the easiest environment to control. You can bring along
your favorite chi enhancers, your perfect pillow, an essential oil diffuser and a vase in which to place local wildflowers (where this is appropriate, of course). Campers will likely tell you that just being outdoors enhances their chi, and they’re right. Many natural places have great feng shui and, while it may not suit everyone, lying on the ground is a fantastic chi enhancer, allowing the body to bathe in the Earth’s magnetic field. Staying with friends or family is often fun and much like being at home, except it’s someone else’s home. Sleeping accommodations can range from a lovely spare room to the sofa bed in the family room. Depending on how much these rooms are used, the chi can be overly stimulating or somewhat stagnant. Bringing along a favorite scented candle or incense can re-energize a seldom-used spare room, and lavender linen spray can help set the tone for a good night’s rest in a more active area of the home. If you’ve ever taken a cruise or stayed in a hotel, you know that not all rooms are created equal. No matter the price or quality,
a hotel room is infused with the residual chi of many people. Those who have stayed there and those who are in and out on a daily basis providing service to the clientele leave an energetic imprint. Choose your room carefully. Request a room away from the fast and noisy chi of the elevator or ice machine, but try to avoid the one at the end of the hall as well. Although it will be quieter, the chi there is most stagnant. Again, bring a quality scented candle or essential oil clearing spray to help clear the residual energy. Purchase a nice bunch of flowers from that exotic market down the street to raise the room’s chi, setting the tone for a relaxing and enjoyable stay and making your accommodations feel like a little home away from home. Travel safely! Mia Staysko is a certified feng shui professional, an interior designer and a Red Ribbon Professional member of the International Feng Shui Guild. Through her company, White Lotus Interiors, she guides others in creating space for powerful change.

Travel Green Don’t leave your green practices at home
F
or many people sustainable practices are embedded in their daily activities; we consciously recycle, compost and look for ways to conserve our use of water and energy both at home and at work. Travelling, whether for leisure or business, doesn’t mean we have to leave these green practices at home. By thinking of your hotel room as an extension of your home, it’s easy to make a positive impact no matter where you are.
In the Guest Room
Lighting: If you’re in the room during the day, open the curtains to take advantage of natural light instead of turning on multiple light sources. Air conditioning and heating: Make sure the windows and balcony doors are closed if the air/heating system is on. Alternatively, shut off
the air or heat if you prefer to have the windows open. Towel and linen reuse programs: Many hotels provide guests, either at check-in or via signage in the room, with the option to reuse their towels and linens during their stay rather than having them changed daily. By taking advantage of these programs you help reduce the number of loads of laundry a hotel generates daily, which contributes to both water and energy savings. Recycling: Many hotels now place recycling bins in their guest rooms and meeting rooms. Make full use of it by placing items such as newspapers, paper, plastics, cans and glass in it rather than in the garbage bin. If the hotel does not have a recycling bin in the room, inquire with housekeeping or management about their recycling policies. In some cases hotels that

don’t have bins in the rooms still separate the recyclables from the trash in the back-of-house area. Water conservation: When brushing your teeth or washing or shaving your face, shut the tap off or fill the sink to avoid leaving the water running. Keeping your showers short not only saves water but also saves energy (used to heat the water). A ten-minute shower can use up to 20 gallons/75 litres of water (low-flow showerheads will use less).
Leaving the Guest Room
Many newer facilities, and recently renovated ones, have installed automated systems that adjust the lights and/or heating/cooling systems depending on whether the room is occupied or vacant. For those that don’t feature this technology you can contribute in the following manner:
travel
l Turn off all lights and electronics when you leave the room. l Turn the air conditioning/heating down or off and close the windows. l During the hot summer months, close the drapes during the day to help keep the room cool. l Take advantage of the linen and towel reuse program. l Check that sink and tub faucets are tightly shut off to avoid water loss from dripping taps.
Sustainable Transportation
While away on business or holidays, explore options other than cabs or car rentals for getting around the area. Local transit: Consider the option of using the local transit system for getting to and from meetings or exploring the area. Bike rentals: A bicycle can be a fun, fit and ecofriendly way to see the local sights.
Shuttle services: Some hotels offer a shuttle service to help their guests get to and from major points within the city or region.
operations. Paperless check-outs, the presence of recycling bins, in-room signage, etcetera, are easy to spot and take advantage of.
Carpooling: If you do need to rent a car or take a cab, try carpooling, especially if travelling with co-workers.
But guests aren’t always privy to the activities that take place back-of-house. From purchasing policies to manual waste sorting to lighting enhancements and water or waste conservation practices, and so on, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. If you’re not seeing something that you think should be in place or have questions about the facility’s sustainable practices, ask to speak with someone from management or from the facility’s green team.
At the End of Your Stay
Make the effort to provide feedback to the hotel you’re staying with. Feedback cards are generally available in the rooms, from the front desk or through the hotel’s website. Sharing your thoughts and ideas with respect to their sustainable practices will help management gain insight as to which of their initiatives work, which don’t and what they may want to consider in their short- and long-term planning.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
As a guest in a hotel or meeting venue you may see the easy-to-recognize signs of a facility’s effort to initiate sustainability into their

Hypnosis for Weight Loss Get your subconscious on your side M
any people struggle with weight loss, trying diet after diet. They may lose weight initially, but then over time, it comes back. Despite their strong desire and fairly good will power, their old habits have a way of creeping back.
conscious intentions.
Often, eating habits are fueled by motivations that exist deep within the subconscious mind. Perhaps in childhood food was used as a reward. Alternatively, food may have provided emotional comfort: there was nothing like a peanut butter and honey sandwich to make the world seem right again.
It is a little like removing a virus from the hard drive of a computer. The virus can wreak havoc with our software, but once it is removed, we can run any programs we choose. In effect, hypnosis can help to remove the “gain weight virus” so that we can move forward with greater success in following our weight loss plan.
◗
Hypnosis can be very helpful, either by itself or as support for a weight-loss program. Messages are given that cause changes in the subconscious mind, allowing it to support, rather than sabotage, our conscious desires.
The subconscious mind is very powerful. It is where some of our deepest drives originate, so it can be very difficult to overcome it with the conscious mind alone. That is why weight loss can be such an effort; there is an ongoing struggle between subconscious desires and

Letting Go with Somatic Emotional Release What’s a little emotional release between family and friends? F
ifteen years ago I was in a complete fog. I was 32 and didn’t know what I wanted to be, where I wanted to be or even if I wanted to be with the people I was then surrounded by! I felt utterly lost.

A lot has changed for me and, I believe, for society as a whole. Often, I hear people discussing how they hope to put more distance in a relationship; they say, “She’s just so unhealthy for me to be around.” When I was growing up, the word unhealthy was mentioned only about food. When it came to relationships, my mum would say, “Make the best of it,” and so we did. It took me a long time to figure out how to release the people in my life who were “unhealthy.” Putting distance between us just made me feel guilty, mostly because the other person was left wondering what had happened. Eventually, I felt the need to be truthful with these individuals, even if they were from my immediate family. We all want to be liked and loved, so I was putting myself on the line. Then I attended a breath workshop around forgiveness. We were guided into a meditative state, which allowed me to see each of my relationships from an entirely different perspective. So much confusion had taken place between me and the individuals involved. Some information had not been shared; situations had been blown out of context; and the result was confusion, frustration and, occasionally, disdain. This is why I was looking for distance and, possibly, separation. The new information I received, this gift, allowed me to release negative emotions regarding each individual and situation, and moved me into a place of forgiveness and love—for them and for me. Transformation was instantaneous and a huge surprise. In the holistic community, this is called a somatic emotional release. It happens when we experience a spiritual revelation around a person or situation, and as a result we no longer harbour emotional distress or respond to triggers when placed in similar situations. I want you to think of one person you are currently having difficulty with. His or her face should show up immediately. Don’t think twice about why you thought of this person. Close your eyes and notice where in your body you’re holding tension. It might a heaviness
or even pain. Perhaps your breathing has changed. Just observe. Concentrate on what you feel and where you feel it. Is it in your shoulders, gut, hip, knee, brain? What part of your body calls out to you? Now, go deeper into your body. Is the tension deep within you or closer to the surface? Is it a big mass or something smaller? It is heavy or light? Does it have colour or texture? Is there an emotion attached to it? If fear or anger comes up, check deeper. Is it perhaps more specific? Frustration? Confusion? Guilt? Sadness? Can you break it down further? Recall when the event with this person took place. What was the situation? The place? The words? What is the truth of that situation? It’s all right if you didn’t understand at the time. Many of us have been through the same thing. Release any emotions that come to the surface. Allow things to change at the cellular level of your body. And breathe. For years I had an underlying annoyance with my best friend. I didn’t want to share anything important with her and didn’t understand why. Our relationship eventually dwindled. Over twenty-five years later, when I did this exercise, I realized that she was the reason that I never tried to be the very best at anything. I allowed myself to be second best sometimes, but never best. It was after a figure skating competition where I had taken first place, beating her cousin, that everything changed. My girlfriend said, “My cousin should have beaten you. You should never have come in first.” In my mind, in my subconscious, I connected having friends with doing badly and it affected much of my life. But not anymore. I have released the emotions around that situation and individual and realized I want to do my best for myself, for my friends and family and for those of you I don’t even know! For me, life is about this work—trying to achieve that place where we no longer have a ball and chain attached to past actions and current reactions. These emotional releases allow me to live my life full of unconditional love in my heart and unconditional joy and happiness in my very soul! Tracy Makarenko is an intuitive healer. Krill Oil is Tops for a Strong Mind and Body
LOOK ’S WHAT
N E W!
Helps promote health E
at fish for omega-3 fatty acids, but eat the right fish. Cold-water seafood like salmon, mackerel and herring all contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. However, one of the best sources is a lesser-known seafood called krill, a tiny crustacean found in the ocean. Omega-3 fatty acid is a welldocumented polyunsaturated fat and plays an important role in cognitive and joint health and in the maintenance cardiovascular health. Canada’s Food Guide recommends at least two servings (75 grams each) of fish a week. That is 150 grams or 5 ounces of cooked fish per week to meet the recommended amounts. If a dietary supplement is your source of omega-3s, check the label to learn the source. Many of us prefer krill oil due to its many benefits: l a high percentage of omega3s in phospholipid form; l easy absorption by the body; l no fishy odour.
Have you noticed any difficulty digesting other fish oils? This is because they do not completely dissolve in water and tend to flow upward in the stomach, and they may leave an unpleasant aftertaste. Krill is known to absorb easily. When shopping, keep in mind that the highest-quality omega-3 krill supplements contain 100 percent pure Antarctic krill oil, which enables efficient digestion of these fatty acids. This helps to promote strong cognitive and heart health. —News Canada Editor’s note: If you are taking any medications, herbs or supplements with bloodthinning properties, check with your health-care practitioner before taking krill oil.
