ummers for me mean being outdoors and camping whenever the weather permits. My husband and I have spent many weekends in our trailer this year, and I can’t remember the last time we were home on a Saturday night. Last weekend we explored the Wapiti River on kayaks with some family members. The views from six inches above the water were breathtaking.

I think we sometimes take this area for granted and think there is nothing to do here, forgetting what’s in our own backyard. In this issue of Guided Synergy, we encourage you to get out and explore this summer. Explore what the Peace Country has to offer. On page 9 you’ll find six destinations in Grande Prairie or just a short drive away. I h(W)ope you’re inspired to explore them. They are all free to visit and each has its own charm.

This issue is packed full of fun recipes to enjoy on the back deck or to take camping with you, depending on how rustic your adventure is! I’m heading to the store this week to pick up some kombucha so I can enjoy one of cocktail recipes on page 13 this weekend.

Remember to respect Mother Nature—be sure to bring out any garbage you bring in.

Don’t cut down trees to make your route easier, and remember to be careful around any body of water.

THE HEALING JOURNEY OF A LIGHTWORKER Defeating the impossible and embracing infinite possibility

I

accepted as a candidate for brain surgery. It was a miracle.

My past does not define me, but it definitely has been an influential teacher when it comes to lessons in gratitude. I continue to learn, and with each lesson I recommit to my mission in life to spread a message: that you are important, that your life matters and that you are part of a huge collection of connected links in the universe.

After two months and two painfully intrusive surgeries, the doctors removed the benign tumour that had caused my seizures.

As I began my healing journey, I kept my promise and began to live my life with the intention of spreading light and love. I knew how it felt when people discouraged the pursuit of something they perceived as impossible. I also knew that the impossible was only a thought process, one that could be changed and molded, with a little bit of encouragement, into infinite possibility.

have lived an extraordinary life. Although I have faced my fair share of adversity, I believe that every day I wake up healthy is an extraordinary gift.

At the age six I flatlined from a tonicclonic seizure. My near-death experience influenced my outlook on life. When people ask me what I learned from that experience, I usually respond that I am more aware of how little I understand, but I know, without a doubt, that we are all connected.

As I grew into a beautiful teenager, my health became fragile, and by the time I was 18, I was having over 100 seizures a day. My external world had become equally chaotic, and the bystanders in my life were sending me a message of negativity: that I would never graduate from high school, I would never go on to university and I might not live past my twenties. But this message of defeat did not align with what I knew to be true, that my future would be extraordinary.

One day I knelt on my hands and knees at the edge of my bed and asked the Creator for help. “Please,” I begged, “take my epilepsy away. If this is what I am meant to experience, I accept it, but please help me spread light and healing in this world.”

What happened next was my first conscious lesson in the law of attraction, a universal law that states that you attract into your life what you focus on. Two weeks after my private conversation with the Creator, my family received the call that I had been

I achieved the impossible and graduated from high school. Then I went on to graduate from university, travel the world, train as an artist, meet incredible people and devote my life to inspiring others to water the seed of possibility within themselves.

My passion continues in my journey of helping youth. Today’s youth belong to the most inclusive generation I have had the privilege to witness. They are not responsible for the world they were born into, and it is our responsibility to guide them as mentors, family members and lightworkers. Through the power of art and social advocacy, I strive to keep my promise and make this world a better place, one story at a time.

THE BENEFITS OF EARTHING The art of connection

I

magine you’re a child digging your feet into the sand, playing in the water or feeling the mud squish between your toes. This is earthing: the act of connecting your bare skin directly to the Earth—be it mud, sand, stones, water, cement or dirt. Earthing grounds your energy and brings balance into your mind, body and spirit. Spend time each day earthing and enjoy the many benefits to your well-being.

Creates peace and calm Connecting and grounding through earthing helps to reduce stress and anxiety. It brings you into the moment of now and allows you to take a breath.

All too often, we get caught up in our busy lives of go, go and go. Earthing is a wonderful opportunity to connect to yourself and the amazing energy of the Earth. You automatically ground and connect to the pulse of Earth. Doing this daily also helps with sleep.

Helps to counteract electromagnetic field pollution We live in a world of electronics, and we are surrounded by electromagnetic fields from phones, TVs, lights, computers and so much more. These fields can be damaging to our systems.

With this practice, the Earth helps to absorb the negative effects from electronics and allows our bodies to recover and deal with this energy.

Lets you get in sync Synchronizing with the biorhythms of the Earth not only helps you stay in balance, it also helps your heart! Earth has an energetic rhythm, and during earthing you connect to the flow of that rhythm. This helps your heart to regulate and be in sync with you. Summer is the best time of the year to begin this daily practice. In winter, when all our beautiful land is covered in white, you can practice earthing with a simple pail of dirt or a plant in your home. Dig into the dirt and feel it between your fingers or toes.

GRANDE PRAIRIE MUSEUM AND HERITAGE VILLAGE Muskoseepi Park, Grande Prairie In the museum, explore a display of pioneer artifacts. Outside, wander through the Heritage Village, which is filled with Grande Prairie’s historical buildings. Admission is free.

KLESKUN HILL PARK AND MUSEUM 20 kilometres east of Grande Prairie on Highway 43 Experience Grande Prairie’s own Badlands, complete with a museum village, walking trails, fossils, a day-use area and camping.

5 SUMMER RECIPES Chocolate and Peppermint Protein Balls Dairy free and vegan; gluten free with uncontaminated oats These protein balls taste just like peppermint patties. They are a delicious treat when you’re on the go, whether you’re camping or going for a long-distance run. In addition to freshening your breath, mint soothes your digestive system, helps with congestion and much more.

Makes 20 balls 1½ cups oats ½ cup almond butter 1 scoop chocolate plant-based protein powder 3 tablespoons maple syrup 3 tablespoons almond milk 2–3 tablespoons cacao powder 1 tablespoon chia seeds 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2–5 mint leaves, diced small

Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl. Form 1-inch balls and place on a baking tray. Place tray in the freezer for 30 minutes. Enjoy the protein balls cold from the freezer.

Tip: Once the balls are frozen, you can store them in a large freezer-friendly plastic bag.

KOMBUCHA COCKTAILS These cocktails are perfect to enjoy with friends on a warm summer evening!

Raspberry Kombucha Mojito 6 mint leaves, plus 1 leaf for garnish 2 ounces rum 2 lime wedges Raw, organic cane sugar Ice Juice of 2 limes 6 ounces raspberry kombucha Raspberries for garnish Muddle mint leaves with rum in a shaker. Add ice and shake until frosty.

Wet the edge of a glass with a lime wedge and rim with raw, organic cane sugar. Add some ice to the glass and pour in the rum and mint. Top up with your favourite raspberry kombucha and garnish with a lime wedge, raspberries and mint leaf. Enjoy your happy bubbles!

Pomegranate Kombucha Margarita Lime wedge Himalayan sea salt Ice 2 ounces tequila Juice of 2 limes 1 ounce triple sec 4 ounces pomegranate kombucha Wet the edge of a glass with a lime wedge and rim with Himalayan sea salt. Place ice in glass and add tequila, lime juice and triple sec. Top up with your favourite pomegranate kombucha. Cheers!

INTERVIEW AND STORY BY KALYN SLOAN PHOTOS BY JACKIE POSTNIKOFF PHOTOGRAPHY lancy Moonbeam FitzGerald is a warrior of the light, an empowering mother, artist, writer, leader and spiritual entrepreneur. She believes that what we are all seeking is freedom: freedom to feel expansive, to fully express the reflection of our souls, to reach our highest potential, to be our truest selves.

Clancy’s search for her true self began under the influence of her parents. Ellen and Chip FitzGerald moved from New York City to San Francisco in the late 1960s, and then to Dixonville, Alberta, in 1970. When Clancy was born in 1979, the family, which included her parents, three siblings and two foster children, had been living off the land for nearly a decade, in an 800-square-foot log cabin that held much love.

Ellen, a strong, independent and open-minded mother, encouraged Clancy to dream a lot, but to do so with two feet on the ground. Chip was a strong father with his own philosophy of life. When advising her to live a life of purpose, he spoke of “life’s juice”: In life, he said, you need to find your juice. Find that passion, that drive, and when you feel it, have the discipline to go after it.

“He instilled a lot of confidence and pride in us that we can do anything,” Clancy remembers, smiling.

Describing her childhood self as an old soul, Clancy recalls being interested in topics often unknown to children her age. When she was 11 years old, she passionately spoke against rainforest destruction in a public-speaking competition. Clancy developed a rich imagination, independence and a deep connection to nature while playing alone in the trees. She also loved to create businesses, such as selling hand-drawn pictures of The Simpsons characters to classmates and starting creativity-based children’s clubs.

Reflecting back, she recognizes her parents’ values in herself.

“I feel like I took that core, that spirit of my parents’ idealism, and spurred that on in my own way,” she says. “It’s kind of an unstoppable force, the knowingness that I’m here to make change.”

A highly self-aware child who knew who she was, Clancy remembers being the truest version of herself at about 11 years old.

After that, of course, things changed.

It was a change in self-awareness, a loss of self that Clancy now understands as a disconnection from spirit that lasted through most of her teenage years and into her early twenties. Although she was grateful for her parents, friends and the life she had, she says that “there was a lingering disconnect, uncertainty about who I was and what direction to take, a knowing I could not fit into many of the boxes that surrounded me without feeling deeply unhappy.”

In her late teens, Clancy enrolled in a university fine arts program, but she found being graded on her artwork was disheartening and her unique style was unappreciated. Disenchanted, she turned away from art. “If I’m not an artist, I don’t know what I am,” she remembers thinking.

In search of her true self, Clancy spent the next six years attending different universities, but it wasn’t until a friend introduced her to meditation that she instinctively knew that this was what she needed to bring her back to her true nature. As her practice progressed, Clancy used meditation to support herself through her father’s death, to cultivate a deeper awareness of life and to overcome other trauma. Her inner knowing sustains her today; she has gathered much knowledge in healing mind–body–spirit, is a reiki practitioner and remains an enthusiastic advocate of meditation and its benefits.

One constant in Clancy’s life has been her love for children. This originally led her to teacher training, but then she realized she wanted to offer lessons and experiences not taught in schools, to pioneer a new form of education. With encouragement from a friend, Clancy trained with Community Futures in Grande Prairie, earning a certificate in business, and then started her own business.

The doors of opportunity opened just six months later. Clancy was blown away by her success!

In 2009, Clancy’s art became a familiar sight in Grande Prairie and the surrounding area. Demand for her art quickly gained momentum, as people were attracted to its universal nature. It has been displayed at The Centre for Creative Arts, at a ceremony for the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards and at the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. Clancy’s artistic path has been written about before, many times in fact, in the Daily Herald Tribune. Her work can also be found in the amphitheatre mural in Muskoseepi Park.

Despite her success, Clancy felt in her soul that she needed to slow down and grow more. It was time to get outside and explore, to develop as an artist, to reconnect with herself and nature in a new place. A move to Nelson, British Columbia, fit her needs perfectly—so perfectly that Clancy felt a deep desire to put down roots there.

“The beauty of this place must be felt to be appreciated,” she explains. “I feel it’s always meant to be my home. It’s a place where I have the time, space and acceptance to be brave enough to be who I am, the truest version of myself. I’ve found my people here.”

Clancy has been living in Nelson for seven years now with her two children, Lily River (11 and a half years) and Leaf Rainer (6 years). They are “well-rounded little people with amazing artistic abilities, and we are a happy little unit.” She grins. “I want to leave a legacy, for them to see me succeed and thrive and make something beautiful, to create positive change for them and the planet while I’m here.”

And that’s just what she is doing. Clancy’s life focus and search for the freedom to be her most authentic self has birthed a vision, Moonbeams Art & Empowerment, through which she leads art classes, children’s empowerment camps and women’s retreats. She has also created an adult colouring book called I Am Love: Visions to Color and Inspire and a children’s book, Born to Shine.

A GREAT BIG TRIP AROUND THE WORLD Growing together along the way

I

love to travel and I’ve always wanted to take an extended vacation, but I haven’t been able to make it a reality. In high school I talked about doing a Rotary Youth Exchange abroad, but it never happened. In university I considered taking a year off to travel or volunteer, but I just didn’t do it. When I completed my undergraduate degree I thought that if I didn’t get into optometry school I would take a year off to travel. I got into optometry school.

When I graduated from optometry school, I was six months pregnant with my eldest daughter, and the idea of long-term travel evaporated. Until now.

Taking a family gap year, or family sabbatical, is increasingly popular. Many people are embracing the idea of pushing back their retirement to live a bit more now—and so am I. Now, while I’m still healthy. Now, when my kids want to spend time with me. Now, while we have the opportunity to solidify our bonds as a family, something that will forever change us.

On July 22 our family is leaving on a yearlong trip around the world. I’ve wanted to do a trip like this for 15 years and it’s finally happening!

How did I get here? Why now?

In June 2013 I opened Aurora Eye Care with my two business partners. At the time my girls were one and two years old, we had just moved into a new house that needed a complete renovation and I had almost no idea how to run a business. The first two years were hard. I spent every waking moment at the clinic, at home working on the business, renovating the house or trying to squeeze in precious seconds with my kids so they wouldn’t forget who I was. I didn’t have time to be a mother or a wife. And I definitely didn’t have time to take care of myself.

The last two years have been better. Our home renovations are done. We have a great management team at the clinic, and I actually have a pretty good handle on

how to run a business, so decision making is more efficient. I have time with my kids, time with my husband and time for myself, but it’s not enough. My family time suffered for the benefit of the business.

Now I want to reclaim some of the time I lost, and I’m using our great big trip around the world to focus on my family.

Free from the distractions of home, work and social media (mostly), travel allows for uninterrupted family time.

Beyond the benefits of spending quality time together, there’s also the benefit of sharing experiences. I believe that when we push ourselves out of our comfort zone together, we grow as individuals and as a family.

Finally, we’ll cross the Atlantic to explore the Americas. We’ll eat tacos in Mexico, visit friends in Honduras and Panama, go ziplining in Costa Rica, climb the ruins in Guatemala, witness evolution on the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador and walk in the footsteps of the Inca people at Machu Picchu in Peru.

When I began planning our trip, I wanted to focus on these shared experiences. I like living outside of my comfort zone, and my family does well out there too. So my criteria for choosing countries to visit were that they are non-English speaking and non-Western.

We’re starting the year off with a short layover in China, and then we’re hopping halfway across the continent to Central Asia. In Asia, we’ll visit the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan, ride horses in Kyrgyzstan, take a train across China, trek the Himalayas in Nepal, visit monasteries in Bhutan, care for elephants in Thailand, learn about hill

Then we’ll head to Africa and the Middle East. We’ll learn about the early Christians at Lalibela in Ethiopia, go on safari in Kenya, marvel at the pyramids in Egypt, celebrate Easter and Passover in Israel and step back in time at Petra in Jordan.

These experiences will offer the greatest backdrop for spending time together, and growing together, as a family. This isn’t going to be the gap year that evaded me in my twenties—it’s going to be so much better.

SELF-CARE ON THE ROAD Using the medicine wheel as a guide

P

eople travel in different ways. Some love a week on a tropical beach with a drink in hand and not a care in the world.

Others challenge themselves on daily hikes in foreign lands. My type of travel is a bit different: I am a 40-year-old woman who travels alone and on a budget.

When the idea for my four-year travel project, North of 35 Latitudes & Attitudes, came to me, I sprang into action, eager to start. But in my excitement I neglected to create a self-care plan that encompassed the four areas of the medicine wheel: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

The first season, 38 European Cities & Towns, was brutal! I was changing locations and sleeping in a different bed every day or two, eating out all the time and barely contacting my family and friends. When I got home that fall, I was writhing with lower back pain, mentally depleted, emotionally drained and not communicating with my Higher Power (whom I call Mother Nature).

After years of being pain free, I had to return to massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic and energy sessions, all of which cost money and time.

Going into season two, 39 Islands, I realized I needed a self-care plan or I would risk further problems. I decided to use the wisdom of my teachers (many of whom I’ve met through Guided Synergy Magazine and events around the Peace Country) to create a simple self-care plan using the medicine wheel as a guide.

Physical After returning from season one, I drew on my experience as an occupational therapist and developed a personal stretching practice. Initially this involved waking up each day and rolling off the bed in pain onto my yoga mat. With difficulty, I would do my best to position myself on the mat, staying

on the floor for up to 30 minutes. This was the only way I could gain enough movement and relief to get through my daily routine of work, volunteering and other activities.

By the time I reached my season two travels, I had adapted my daily routine to 10 minutes of practice while lying in bed, checking social media and enjoying the comfort of my pyjamas. In addition to feeding my physical needs, this became my personal version of meditation.

Emotional This meditation supported my emotional aspect and aligned with the medicine wheel.

However, although it was ideal while I was in Canada, I knew I would need more emotional support while travelling far from home.

I realized that I needed to communicate with my friends and family on a regular basis, so I included regular calls via Skype, Messenger or WhatsApp (all free) in my self-care plan. Messaging is great, but I had to hear a familiar Canadian voice.

Those calls made a huge difference to my emotional well-being on the good and the bad days.

Mental I also recognized that my new travel life required me to use my laptop, cellphone, cameras and audio equipment more than my previous travel experiences. So I decided it was time to get off the electronics when I wasn’t working. This simple commitment helped me feed my intellectual self and address the mental aspect of the medicine wheel. It was easily achieved by packing a couple paperback books.

Spiritual Although Mother Nature is my connection to spirit, I also carried my Laughing Buddha figurine for moments when I was having

an extremely hard time on a train, plane or bus, as well as to capture his light in some of my journey photos. Earlier that year I had placed a labradorite Buddha in my deceased grandmother’s hands to protect her on her journey to the other side. My Buddha reminded me that my grandmother was watching over me as I travelled around the world.

Addressing these four aspects of self-care helped me to relieve my back pain, to come back from my season two travels excited about the months ahead and to take on challenges and transitions with more grace.

I truly understood the importance of my self-care plan after falling off my wheel during season three, 40 Countries. After two months away, I struggled with my emotional aspect because I had not attended to my other self-care needs. I came home feeling lost and exhausted. So I challenged myself to get outside every day for a minimum of 15 minutes. Some days can be a struggle, but in general I feel better all around. I just needed to adjust my self-care plan and make it uniquely mine.

You can create your own self-care plan.

Think about how best to support your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs. The spiritual aspect in particular can be confusing or missing for some people, so please create a Higher Power of your understanding—this is how we keep our wheel rolling in a safe manner. Follow your plan while on your summer travels or at home and adjust as needed.

HOMEMADE BATH BOMBS Make a gift for yourself or others

I

had a love–hate relationship with bath bombs.

Although I liked the idea of them, one burned my skin when I was little and that was the last time a bath bomb ever joined me in the tub. I have eczema and my skin is easily irritated by scents, so finding bath soaks and bubbles can be difficult. But when I saw some bath bomb recipes, I thought it might be time to give them a second chance, since I could control the ingredients.

An added bonus: If you make them yourself, your partner and kids have to give you time alone to enjoy a soak in the tub!

After combining all the ingredients thoroughly, ball some in your hand to see if the mixture is moist enough. If it stays together, it’s fine.

However, if crumbs fall off, use the spray bottle to slowly add moisture. After every spray, work the water into the mixture and retest—you don’t want to add too much.

Once your mixture is the right consistency, it’s ready to be pushed into the silicone mold. At this point, you can embellish your bath bombs. I put some dried lavender in the bottom of the mold for my lavender bath bombs and some orange rind on top of the orange-scented ones.

Ingredients: 6 tablespoons Epsom salts 2 cups baking soda 1 cup cream of tartar Essential oils of your choice Dried lavender (optional) 10 teaspoons coconut oil or olive oil Orange rind (optional)

Let your bath bombs dry in the mold undisturbed for about 36 hours. Then very, very carefully (I broke two the first time I tried) remove them from the mold. Set them in a safe place to dry for approximately 24 hours longer. After you’ve executed this last step—a complete test of patience!—run yourself a bath to celebrate.

Equipment: One or two large mixing bowls Measuring cups Measuring spoons One or two large spatulas or spoons Spray bottle filled with water Silicone mold

After I tested mine I could say that my doubts about bath bombs had disappeared—I love this recipe. While they aren’t as fizzy as I had expected, my skin feels soft and is much less dry.

I knew I would like the lavender ones since it’s a tried-and-true scent, and the orange ones smell like Creamsicles. Who doesn’t love those?

To begin, place the Epsom salts, baking soda and cream of tartar in one bowl and mix thoroughly.

If you would like to make two different scents, divide the mixture and place half in the second bowl.

I chose to make two scents, lavender and orange, because both come with a variety of healing properties that call to me. Lavender is known for being calming, relieving migraines, and helping with aches and pains, and it is a great sleep aid.

Orange is a natural antidepressant and antiinflammatory, and it’s often used to improve digestion and help with blemishes. Look into the properties of different oils and choose something that you find soothing.

Once you’ve chosen your essential oils, add them to the mixture (about 30 drops to each batch if you’re making two, or 60 to a single large batch). I also threw 2 tablespoons of dried lavender into my lavender batch to add texture and beauty to my bath bombs.

Now, add 5 teaspoons of coconut oil or olive oil to each batch or 10 teaspoons to a single large batch.

My only other advice is to pour a glass of wine or make a cup of tea and grab a good book before you jump into the tub. You won’t want to get out!

THE NEED TO PAUSE

Take a few moments to come back to yourself N

ow that winter is behind us and we are out of hibernation, it’s time to get outside and enjoy all the activities and great company that summer promises. Yet with so much happening, we can easily get swept up and lose our sense of connection to ourselves and our inner calmness. That’s because our aura, or electromagnetic field, is always interacting with everything around us.

Think of the filter on a water jug. What happens when you fill it too quickly? It overflows, of course. But if you give the filter a moment to do its job, you are soon able to add more water to continue the flow. Our electromagnetic field is similar. In order to naturally do its job and integrate the constant flow of incoming information, it sometimes needs a moment of pause. When we don’t allow ourselves that time, it can feel like we’re taking on more and more, past the point where we feel able to successfully handle it.

This is a challenge I find myself facing time and time again, so I wanted to share some signs that it may be useful to pause, and to describe what that pause can look like.

The first sign is a general sense of unease, of feeling not quite like yourself, mixed in with some irritability. This may seem obvious, but because it happens on such a subtle level, it is the most important sign to look out for. Many of us have come to believe we have to persevere through difficult things or busy times, sometimes leading us to ignore our internal needs. It’s important to stay conscious of unease and irritability because they can create the perfect recipe for interactions that are not coming from a place of authenticity, calmness and love.

The second thing to check is your thoughts, which are strong indicators of your current

state of being. Are your thoughts kind towards others and yourself? Is there a constant monologue in your head, and if so, what is its tone? Does it have an edge to it? If you feel pressure building within your mind, check in. You might find yourself having an internal argument with yourself or someone else.

The physical symptoms are the easiest to spot. Does your energy level feel low, or do you feel like you’re riding a roller coaster of highs and lows? Do you feel anxious? Anxiety can be a sign that your nervous system is overloaded. Do you have headaches? There is a wide variety of signs that you need a pause, some obvious and some subtle. As you become more aware and get to know yourself better, deciphering them becomes easier.

Here are some signs that you might need a moment of pause: • Generally not feeling like yourself • Irritability • Difficulty concentrating • Negative, irrational or judgmental thoughts about yourself or others • Replaying a conversation or event in your mind

• Low energy level or feeling depleted, regardless of how much or how little activity you’re doing • Difficulty sleeping, especially because your mind is overactive • Nervousness or anxiety • Headaches • Stomach problems

So what to do when you recognize some of these signs in yourself? Take a pause! This may seem impossible in your busy life, but it doesn’t have to mean taking an hour away

from your family and friends and forcing yourself to meditate. It can be as simple as bringing your awareness into the centre of your being and taking a few deep breaths— and yes, you can do this while washing the dishes!

A really focused intention can have a powerful effect. It’s easy to take a deep breath but still allow your thoughts to run amok, defeating the whole purpose. Focus on bringing all of yourself—the physical, mental and emotional—together with the genuine intention of re-centring yourself as you let go of anything no longer needed in your electromagnetic field. And, of course, operating from a place of gratitude will bring more magic to any focused intention.

I find that the most important aspect is the energy behind the action, not the action itself. Taking five quiet minutes for yourself can bring far more success than forcing yourself to do thirty minutes of meditation or yoga because that’s what you believe should help. For some, pausing can be simply doing a quick check-in with themselves while remaining in the company of others. Other people may require time alone, away from the energy of others, so that it’s easier to orient back into themselves.

When you begin to truly listen to yourself more and ask yourself what you need, it becomes easier to come from that place of inner calmness, leaving you with more energy and joy to share with those you love during this wonderful time of year.

You hate your nine-to-five. Your parents don’t get along. Your health is deteriorating. But you had nothing to do with it, right? Yes, your body might be breaking down from all the cigarettes you smoke, but you only smoke to curb the relationship stress stemming from hating your nine-tofive and the fact that your parents never get along. So, responsibility averted—you’re in the clear. All of this just “happened” to you. Right?

Wrong.

Not to worry, though. This realization hits most of us like a ton of nailencrusted bricks at first. As a society, we are so used to making excuses and passing the blame that actually accepting responsibility takes a lot of courage and effort. We were born into a certain type of passivity, where any excuse is better than none at all. Even some adults have never carried the weight of responsibility, so naturally it seems impossibly heavy to consider that we may be the cause of our own suffering.

I’m not implying that everything we do carries a huge weight, that we are completely and wholly to blame or that we should take the blame too far.

But we should allow the responsibility for our faults to land upon us. We should allow ourselves the opportunity to lift that weight, because in accepting responsibility for our suffering, we can also accept responsibility for our joy. Let’s be honest—what feels better than knowing that you did something good for yourself?

Today I invite you to consider all of the places within your life where you have passed responsibility or pushed blame onto someone or something else. This is not for you to torment yourself, but rather to be brutally honest and compassionate. Allow yourself to experience the truth for what it is. Then, moving forward, be aware of these passive tendencies and allow yourself to shift into your higher self. Take responsibility, accept consequences and then carry on. One step, one responsibility, at a time.
