A YEAR OF CHANGES I

look forward to this season each year. It provides a sense of a renewal, and it is a time to embrace change and new ideas. Spring encourages us to clean up and refresh our body, mind, soul and home, and this Spring 2017 issue provides you with some simple tips to help you do so. For the first time this year I am sitting on my back deck in the sunshine, drinking a coffee from one of my favorite cafés in town while writing this editorial. After the “spring” blizzard that swept the Peace Country last week, this is a big deal. Spring has finally sprung in Grande Prairie—for the second time this year—just a day after we did the cover shoot for this issue. Ironically, this seems to happen with every spring issue. I am so honoured to be the new publisher of Guided Synergy Magazine. The passion I had for the magazine years ago has not changed. I am excited to bring new energy into this Peace Country publication, and I plan to greatly expand its distribution and the exposure it offers to contributors and advertisers.

I would like to thank all of the advertisers who came on board for this issue. To those who have been loyal advertisers for years, thank you for believing in me and my plans for the future. To all of the new advertisers, welcome to our community, our tribe and our Guided Synergy family. To the readers, thank you for picking the magazine up! I’m happy to be sharing great local content with you. Our magazine is conveniently found in various health and wellness businesses, cafés, offices, pharmacies and many more places. You can also find us online, so you’ll never have to miss an issue.

For my first issue as publisher, I have put myself on the cover. I want to introduce myself, and want you all to get to know me and my story and to trust me as the new publisher. This year will be a year of changes for the magazine; we unveil a few of them in this issue. We have given the whole magazine a face lift, starting with the cover and have included great articles that you’re going to want to tear out and keep nearby. As I juggle my new position of publisher of Guided Synergy Magazine and my existing work as co-founder of The Handmade Marketplace, my life and my to-do lists can get a little crazy. If you can relate, then you will love Mackenzie Johnson’s simple ways to organize your busy days in “5 Steps to a Clear Mind” (p. 13). You might want to take a trip to the office supply store so you can do the bonus step! Lately, breakfast on my busy mornings has consisted of a cup of coffee in my favorite handmade mug and a healthy smoothie. I love smoothies because with a little coconut water, some frozen fruit and a few nutritious additions you can start your day right and stay full longer. I have gathered 20 of my favourite additions on page 9. If you are looking for a recipe to start with, head over to page 11 for the Piña Colada Twist Smoothie. I really hope you enjoy reading our first issue of 2017, and I invite you to send any questions, comments or suggestions to me at Chelsey@guidedsynergy.ca. I would love to hear from you! - Chelsey Boyne, Publisher

DEB FULLER

Lessons on reclaiming life D

eborah Fuller, or Deb as she’s known to her family and friends, is no stranger to hard work, but after a traumatic incident and a couple of near-death experiences, she’s had to make a few adjustments.

Deb found herself devoting the majority of her time and energy to making sure business ran smoothly. But, in May of 2004, her world came to a halt with Clayton’s passing, to suicide.

As one of the female pioneers in the maledominated oil and gas industry in the early 1980s, Deb set out to prove her competency as an operator. She says, “I was the only woman in my area and it wasn’t easy back then. There were still these ideas that women belonged in certain careers or should be housewives, but I loved the work!”

“I was so sad,” remembers Deb. “My heart was broken and I really didn’t know what to do with myself. I had a lot of pain—it’s hard to lose a child so young and you feel helpless as a parent because your job is to protect them.”

In fact, Deb placed a high value on her career and, along with her husband, Randy, and oldest son, Clayton, developed a successful oilfield operations and maintenance company. The company kept everyone busy and there was no shortage of competition, so

6 www.guidedsynergy.ca

Deb began isolating herself from the world by working more, watching her favorite TV shows and playing computer games. “It was easier than feeling the pain,” she says. In September of 2013, during a long stretch of work doing holiday relief, Deb started to feel tired and sick to her stomach, but she was determined to finish out the last two

days of her shift. “I thought I had the flu, so I wasn’t overly concerned,” she explains. But by the evening of her last shift, Deb was in hospital suffering from a heart attack. She was quickly air-lifted to Edmonton for an angioplasty to unblock three of her arteries. During the procedure, cardiologists discovered that Deb had likely suffered a heart attack in the past, unknown and untreated. As if this weren’t enough, a year later, almost to the day, Deb endured another heart attack and was back in hospital for treatment for chronic heart disease. She asked herself “What else do I need to do to get better?” The answer came, but unfortunately, not without more challenges to face. This time she would have an even harder road to walk. On June 15, 2016, Deb suffered a significant stroke after being treated with blood

Deb and her dog Sully

HEALTH thinners for a clot that had settled in her heart. In a coma, she was airlifted to the intensive care unit at the University of Alberta Hospital, where she remained unresponsive for five days. On day six, she opened her eyes and, after taking in her surroundings, she began to cry. “I didn’t know what had happened, but I knew it wasn’t good,” she says. Surrounded by her entire family, Deb tried to show her gratitude by attempting to reach out and hug everyone, but the stroke had left her with some significant limitations, and her only means of communication were facial expressions and emotions. She describes the time between waking from the coma and the present as “just trying to put all the puzzle pieces of my mind back together.” What’s unique about Deb’s stroke is that the affected side of her body responded involuntarily with constant movement, which may have actually prevented extensive physical damage. However, her speech was completely impaired, as were some of her cognitive abilities.

This isn’t just a story about facing and overcoming adversity; this is a story of reclamation. Unable to go back to the job she so loved, she channeled her energy and work ethic into truly living in the moment. As part of her therapy goals, Deb initiated an exercise plan to protect her cardiovascular health, and she began working on speech goals set out by her therapist, Kathy, by chatting daily with her sister, Mona, and son, Curt, on FaceTime. She was also determined to learn to play guitar again—she’d never lost her passion for country and bluegrass music, but in the past she’d had to put that interest aside because she was so busy. Deb is sometimes overwhelmed with tasks or when she needs to search for a word or a phrase. She tires easily. But the support and patience she receives from her family remind her of just how precious relationships and life are, and that gives her the strength to keep going. “I’m grateful to have such a supportive family and for the post-stroke team at the QE II [Hospital],” she says. “They are all awesome people!”

She continues, “I see the world differently now. I appreciate nature—like picking river rocks or planning a hike along O’Mahony trail. Just taking my dogs for a walk makes me feel so happy!” When asked what advice she would give others, Deb simply says, “Well, I’ve been given three chances and this time, I’m determined to get it right. Any time is a good time to reclaim your life. You don’t have to wait for a tragedy.” Shelley L. Lauzé is Deb’s daughter. She is a certified trauma therapist and developmental specialist who recently launched her own private practice, Seeds of Change. She and her husband, Robert, live in Falher, Alberta, where they’ve raised their three children. Shelley enjoys spending time with friends and family, camping, travelling and many sportsrelated activities and has recently reconnected with her lasting passion of writing.

BIODYNAMIC CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY FOR HEALTH, HEALING AND EMBODIMENT Supporting nervous-system and whole-body health

I

s trauma or stress affecting your health? Biodynamic craniosacral therapy (BCST) may provide help. As the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America describes it, BCST focuses on supporting the health of your whole being, and in particular, your nervous system. If you’ve experienced a shock or trauma, such as an injury to your head, spine or limbs, or if you’ve had a surgical procedure, BCST can help your body process that trauma. When your nervous system is operating with a better balance, it can improve your digestion and sleep and give you a greater sense of wellbeing and ease. What to expect BCST is a hands-on form of therapy that uses a light touch. You will lie comfortably and fully clothed on a massage table, or you can sit in a chair. The facilitator may begin the session with a light touch at your feet, encouraging your body to settle so that your system can clarify a healing priority for the session. Throughout the session, the facilitator may use anatomically specific holds at the spine, sacrum, head or limbs to continue to support this healing priority. If you’re fatigued or highly stressed or anxious, your body may take a bit more time to clarify a priority for healing. If this happens, the facilitator maintains a listening state through touch, which encourages the nervous system to settle and resource.

8 www.guidedsynergy.ca

How it works The life energy flowing within your body expresses itself in various rhythms. In BCST these are called tides. These tides are palpable; that is, the trained hands of the facilitator can sense them, and often you can perceive them as well. Michael Kern describes these tides in his book Wisdom in the Body. The most tissueoriented tide is called the cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI). The life energy that flows up and down your spine (or midline) is carried by the craniosacral fluid in your brain and spinal chord, and it can be felt in all the tissues of your body. The CRI also expresses itself through a slight rocking motion of all fluids, bones, membranes and organs. Trauma or injury creates shapes and patterns within your tissues, and these can disrupt the CRI and cause pain, restriction or even loss of feeling or numbness. As your body meets its internal health carried in the various tides, tissue and fluid fields can be reorganized, thereby easing pain, improving function and bringing more balance to that particular area. A biodynamic craniosacral therapist is trained to be present with, support and, often, gently encourage your body as a whole to replenish its CRI and the deeper tides or rhythms that underlie it. Meeting these resources can facilitate a greater depth of healing, and is indeed an indication that your body has found a renewed level of wholeness. As your nervous system becomes more settled and balanced, the palpable tides underlying CRI become more available for

self-healing. A mid-tide rhythm, for example, is slower than the CRI, and it is perceived as a much more fluid rhythm up and down your whole body that seems to “wash” the tissues, further easing restrictions in your body. The long tide underlies the mid-tide. It is an even slower rhythm that expresses through a spacious airy field of potency throughout your body. A tide known as dynamic stillness seems to be the deepest tidal expression, and it underlies the long tide. Both the long tide and dynamic stillness are potent expressions of your health, and meeting these tides is considered deeply restorative for your tissues and nervous system. Kern likens dynamic stillness to “the ocean floor” and “the place of our deepest nature.” Trauma and stress can disrupt your body in countless ways. BCST can be an effective treatment to encourage your body to meet its internal forces of health, to promote selfhealing and to bring about a greater sense of embodiment. References What Is BCST? Pad Thai Gluten free and vegan Do you have a craving for Thai food? This easy recipe is one of my favorite dishes. I love the combination of sweet, salty and sour found in most Thai food. Most of these simple ingredients can be found in your local grocery store, but they make a huge impact. This recipe is also quick: 15 minutes and you’ll have supper on the table. Serves 6 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 red pepper, cut into strips 2 green onions, chopped (save half of one for garnish) ½ cup peas ½ cup fresh spinach, chopped 1 package rice stick noodles Juice of 1 lime 2 tablespoons sesame oil 1 tablespoon tamari 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes ½ teaspoon sea salt 1 inch ginger, grated Cilantro for garnish 1 lime wedge for garnish In a wok, place coconut oil, red pepper, green onion (saving some for garnish) and peas. Sauté over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add the spinach and sauté for 5 more minutes. Cook the rice stick noodles according to the package instructions. They usually take only 2 to 5 minutes to cook, so make sure you watch them carefully. Drain the cooked noodles. In a small bowl, mix together the lime juice, sesame oil, tamari, red pepper flakes, sea salt and ginger. Add the cooked noodles to the vegetable wok. Add the sauce and mix well. Top with saved green onion, cilantro and lime wedge. Serve warm. Shannon Boyne is a holistic nutritional consultant who specializes in pre- and post-natal nutrition. PERSONAL GROWTH

5 STEPS TO A CLEAR MIND Get on track for spring

I

t’s spring! That means spring cleaning— and not just cutting down on clothes you don’t wear and cleaning out the junk drawer. We’re talking about a full-on cleanse: body, mind and soul. To me, that means reorganizing, prioritizing and planning. Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than a clear mind and a full calendar. As a firm believer in colour coding and sticky notes, I can tell you that organizing your life starts and ends with a good system. So grab your favourite day planner (digital or paper), some pens (and highlighters if you’re feeling ambitious) and a cup of tea and settle in. It might take a few tries to customize this system for your own life, but you’ll end up with a clear head and more time to do the things that are important to you. Step 1: Make a list of everything you need to do. I know this sounds intimidating, but the goal is to get everything that’s floating around in your head down on paper. You’ll end up with a long list—potentially three pages or more. Now that you’ve done this brain dump, use the following steps to move these tasks into your calendar. Step 2: Fill in all the unmovable appointments and deadlines. These are the things you don’t have control over, such as appointments, client meetings, kids’ swimming lessons and Sunday family

dinners. You don’t want to miss a deadline or an important commitment, so schedule these in your calendar first. Step 3: Break projects down into manageable steps. This might mean that one item on your massive list has now turned into seventeen. That’s okay. Put the steps into your calendar, and always overestimate how long each one will take. Adding a half-hour buffer to every task may seem excessive, but it ensures you won’t fall behind when you run into a chatty friend at yoga and go for coffee, which turns into lunch, which turns into drinks at her place. Step 4: Add in the one-offs. Group together things that can be done in one sitting or trip, such as running errands, responding to emails or returning phone calls. Place these one-offs in your calendar. Again, overestimate the time you’ll need. Step 5: Leave at least one hour per day for a self-care routine. Spring is the perfect time to commit to a self-care routine. January resolutions have become habits, or have come and gone, and now it’s time to do something your future self will thank you for. Self-care is crucial to succeeding in organizing your life. You need to take care of yourself before anything else. This might be hard to come to terms with, but it’s true.

How you spend that hour will be different from how someone else does, and it might even change from day to day. One afternoon, you could talk to your mom on the phone. The next night, you could take a bubble bath. The following morning, you could take some time to meditate. Just remember that it’s important to take time to decompress. It will help you in the long run. Bonus step: Colour code. Try colour coding different categories of tasks or different parts of your life. Use one colour for work, another for social activities and a third for family time. See what works best for you, and go from there. So, those are the basics. Try them out for yourself and adapt them to your life. Remember to keep it simple—there’s no point in an organizational system that takes longer to figure out than just doing the task at hand. Good luck and happy organizing! Mackenzie Johnson, a freelance designer and writer, is working on a bachelor’s degree in communication. Her crazy schedule and multitude of to-do lists have given her an endless fascination for organizing her life. She hopes this article helps you too. FEATURE STORY

NEW PUBLISHER, NEW GLOW Chelsey Boyne creates community

C

INTERVIEW AND STORY BY KALYN SLOAN | PHOTOS BY LIZA CURTISS PHOTOGRAPHY CLOTHING FROM LOVELY THREADS BOUTIQUE

helsey Boyne wants to help you be happy, be healthy and lead a full life. She wants to connect you to local communities that support growth and to local people who celebrate connection. She’ll do it, and as Guided Synergy Magazine’s new publisher, she’ll do it with such radiance that you’ll want to be a part of her community too. Chelsey’s experience at Guided Synergy Magazine is a seven-year story—and counting— of life transitions, influential mentors, community connection and work in publishing. Having grown up in the Peace Country, Chelsey is one of many Boynes in this large Grande Prairie family. She describes her parents, Scott and Kim Boyne, as her “rocks” and credits them for her entrepreneurial spirit. Fond childhood memories include boating on the Wapiti River, relaxing at the family cabin in Wapiti Gardens and playing outside with her younger sister Sarah, her “very best friend,” exploring their parents’ land. Chelsey attended Peace Wapiti Academy, where she met her high school sweetheart, Justin Viens-Lauzé, originally of Falher, Alberta. Happily, Chelsey and Justin will be married this summer in front of friends and family on the Boyne’s family property. In 2010, Chelsey took a hospitality and tourism program at Grande Prairie Regional College. That was the same year she began working for Linda Warwick at this very magazine. She smiles, describing their connection: “I went in for an interview and it was just an instant click between Linda and me.” Chelsey worked as Linda’s assistant and completed her college practicum at the same time, and she chose to continue working for Guided Synergy Magazine after graduation. By 2014, Chelsey had worked her way up from Linda’s assistant to associate editor, obtaining a thorough knowledge of the clients; helping manage the accounting, graphics, production, sales and editorial teams; and filling in as acting publisher when needed. Chelsey thanks Linda for her mentorship. “She introduced me to the world of publishing,” Chelsey says, “and gave me a chance without any real experience in the field. She taught me a lot of what I know, and I am forever grateful for that. ” Life transitioned for Chelsey in 2014. Although she was laid off that year, she was inspired to continue supporting local people through publishing, and she became a part-time editor at Bargain Hunter Publishing. Her experiences at Guided Synergy Magazine had prepared her for this position, where she was in charge of “laying out the magazine, working with various departments, graphic design and client care.”

Chelsey also worked with Candace McKim at that time. While Grande Prairie knows Candace as an author and yogini, Chelsey thinks of her as a mentor and often hears her intuition whispering “Do business like a woman.” Chelsey is a close friend of Candace’s daughter Chloe and, growing up, was often at the McKim house. Eating vegetarian food and learning yoga at a young age, she was positively influenced by Candace’s holistic lifestyle. Candace also introduced Chelsey to Linda, and so to publishing. A business relationship developed when Chelsey later acted in administrative, advertising and graphic design capacities for Candace. “She’s been with me through it all,” Chelsey beams. “She’s one of the reasons I’m here today, and I am so thankful for it.” In 2015, Chelsey found another way to support local people by opening GLOW Boutique, an online store that sells handmade artisan work. She also co-founded The Handmade Marketplace with Denise Ouelette. Their entrepreneurial relationship began when Denise started a networking group that led to the foundation of eWomen Network. Chelsey has been a participant in the network and an assistant to Denise. She says, “Denise created a safe place to network and grow as businesswomen.” Today, using their mutual desire to connect community and support local businesses, The Handmade Marketplace hosts many pop-up markets and community events. The next event will be Grande Prairie’s first Midsummer Solstice celebration on June 20 at the Muskoseepi Park amphitheater, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Offering workshops, yoga, meditation, crystal bowl playing, food and music, it will celebrate the local holistic community: the healers, card readers, energy practitioners, handcraft vendors, musicians and store and business owners. For Chelsey, this event represents the energy of belonging, connection and celebration. “I’m not an energy healer,” she explains. “I believe in it all, but I don’t know how to do it. What I do know is these people and how they make me feel, how I love them and how I really just feel complete when I’m with them.” Organizing events through The Handmade Marketplace has maintained Chelsey’s inspiration to connect local people with local businesses. And in October of 2016, she got some fantastic news that would help her to continue doing that: Guided Synergy Magazine was for sale. Linda contacted her to see if she was interested in purchasing it. She happily accepted. Back in publishing and now the owner of a magazine, Chelsey reflects, “I just feel so lucky and excited and so honoured that she chose to approach me for this opportunity.”

Spring 2017 l GUIDED SYNERGY 15

A new publisher suggests a renewed energy and a fresh glow. When asked what readers and advertisers can expect with the new Guided Synergy Magazine, Chelsey had much to share. Readers will find the magazine carries a new feel. Clean, fresh and streamlined “so that the content shines,” it will be modernized with simplified layouts and photo-quality upgrades. The magazine will also be widely available throughout the Peace Country, with plans for a more expanded distribution; locations in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, Edmonton, Leduc and Lacombe have already eagerly agreed to carry it. The number of copies printed will be larger as well, with intentions to have them available in office waiting rooms, coffee shops, holistic businesses and other spaces within the city of Grande Prairie. In addition to a wider distribution, advertisers can expect to receive more exposure through updated advertising packages and networking events. With a mission to effectively connect advertisers with customers and readers, the magazine will focus its content specifically on Peace Country contributors and advertisers. For Chelsey, it’s a matter of celebrating the people. “I really want to expose everyone here because we have fantastic talent here,” she says. “Some of the people who are here and the modalities that they have are the same modalities that people travel to Arizona for or travel to Vancouver for; we have them here, we just need to really expose them.” The magazine will also feature fun community events, opportunities to meet and speak with advertisers and chances to participate in contests. Excited to bring out ideas she’s had for years, Chelsey holds space for what will come with the magazine, for the local connections that will be made and for the events that will happen. Reflecting on her journey, Chelsey takes inspiration from her experience with the Fall 2013 Guided Synergy Magazine issue, which featured Dave Doyle, the first cover story she had the opportunity to facilitate. Dave’s issue launch was “phenomenal—such a fun party and just a celebration, and that’s what I want, I want the magazine to be a celebration. Every issue. A celebration of what is here in the Peace Country. I want everyone to know what’s happening here and to experience the Grande Prairie that I know, to help each other grow and glow. I want to create a community.” Embracing the roles intuition and writing play in her life, Kalyn Sloan is a passionate editor and literacy tutor at k.sloan Language Consultant. A lifelong learner, she loves using words to help people think, question, laugh, cry and love.

FROM WOUNDS TO AWARENESS

How to transform the disempowering lies we tell ourselves

V

ictim. Ponder that word for a moment. What does it mean to you? How do your mind and body react to it? Now ask yourself whether you are a victim. Your mind may say, “I’m not a victim. Other people have it far worse than me. I know that I have to be strong to live in this world.” Yet how often do you find yourself feeling powerless, like you can’t control what happens to you no matter how hard you try? You don’t have to be in an abusive situation to experience victim consciousness. It can be as subtle as a non-empowering thought like “I can’t do that.” How many of us are held back by our self-victimizing thoughts? More importantly, how can we change them? What are you thinking? You first have to get familiar with the concept of self-victimization and identify where that feeling of disempowerment comes from. We create, perceive and interpret our experiences entirely through our subconscious. From birth, we have collected all of our experiences as data and developed an intricate set of behaviour and thought patterns. Those patterns are so effective that they can operate completely below our consciousness, on autopilot. So if you wish to see what lies deep within you and transform it, you must discover your self. Cultivating awareness of self allows truth into your perspective. This means focusing inward instead of on the external. The first step is to become curious about your thoughts, instead of dreading the mean ones that make you question your worth. If you find yourself feeling bad about yourself or you realize that your mind takes over how you’d like to feel, begin to question your thoughts, just like you would question someone who was saying mean things about your best friend, parent or child. Ask yourself questions like these: Would I say these words to others? Why do I believe this thought is true? What is this thought telling me about myself? If I let this thought continue down its usual path, what feeling would that create and what belief would that reaffirm? Through these questions, you’ll become aware of what your subconscious

is subtly telling you that you believe about yourself—and, therefore, you’ll see what’s keeping you from being fully empowered.

TIPS FOR BECOMING AWARE OF SELF-VICTIMIZING THOUGHTS

Wait, with patience and openness, for an answer.

• Become curious and observe your thoughts as often as possible.

And then you wait. I find this part of the process hard, but the experience has to unfold naturally for you to fully receive the answer. This part is of out of your control. You cannot force awareness. It happens spontaneously when you find yourself surrendering to the whole process. That way, truth erupts through you in a way that you will never un-see or be able to doubt.

• When you notice a disempowering thought arise, ask yourself questions like these: What belief is this thought reaffirming? Why do I accept it as a truth about myself? Is there a more empowering way I can direct this thought?

The best way to create a space for surrender is through internal calmness, which can arise from any activity that creates a feeling different from the one your thoughts keep reinforcing, such as meditation, contemplation, focused breathing, a creative project or writing. If your mind, like mine, is always active and probing for answers, you might think you’ll never get it to be quiet. But when you least expect it, it will happen, and your quiet mind will show you how you’ve been living with self-victimizing thoughts.

• Maintain love and compassion for yourself when held experiences start to arise for transformation. There is nothing to do with what arises other than to let it all flow through you without stifling it.

• Wait, with patience and openness, for an answer or insight to come through. Don’t try to force an explanation.

Insights will start to arise if you ask the question and remain open to the answer. Then it’s important to hold compassion for whatever comes up. This is key. Being understanding and open to yourself gives you the breathing room to fully gain the wisdom, the lesson. Hold love and compassion for yourself the way you would for a child telling you her fears, because just as those fears are real to her, your fears are real to you. This is a part of your experience coming up to be transformed because you’ve asked it to. Be kind with yourself. What have you got to lose, other than some self-limiting thoughts? Rachel Udy is fascinated by how the unconscious mind is conditioned, and she is committed to personal discovery and growth through awareness. She shares her insights through her blog and intuitive sessions. To connect with her, visit racheludy.weebly.com. Spring 2017 l GUIDED SYNERGY 19

FINDING PURPOSE, MAKING SENSE Reflections from Cuba

I

've just come in from an ocean swim. Truth is, I’m a terrible swimmer. When I realized that I had drifted a bit far out and couldn’t touch the bottom, the waves began to swell over my head. As I paddled back to shore, I thought maybe I had come to Varadero, Cuba, to drown. But I kept going. With everything that happens, we just need to keep going. As I sit next to my oldest daughter, near the ocean, I’m happy. I worked two jobs to make this trip possible. It was part of my plan when I agreed to partner with a close friend on a school photography business even though I have a full-time job. She’s the photographer; I handle many of the administrative tasks. The extra income allows me to travel. I’ve promised to take each of my kids on a vacation. My oldest daughter said, “I just want to go to the beach and relax.” So here we are. I watch an elderly man and small boy playing in the sand. Could that be his son? I note the titles of books that people are reading. I look at my adult daughter, sitting next to me, listening to music. The one my doctor told me not to count on having. The fertility drugs and medical procedures, they worked. I am not only blessed with one daughter; I’m triple blessed with three. I never gave up. I just kept going. I’ve learned to not always believe what others say. Humans, even with the best of intentions, don’t always know. I don’t say we should intentionally distrust or disbelieve, but we should take a simpler approach. Just wait and see. Life will show us all it has to offer if we are patient, positive and kind. Paying attention to what happens and to my surroundings has become a fascination, an existence that allows me to live with a sense of awe and wonder. We’re all here for different reasons. When we find our purpose, everything makes sense. My purpose is to move others forward. I’ve learned that no matter what role I have, my purpose remains the same. Finding purpose can be a struggle. It can be frustrating, but those who really want to know seem to find it. Maybe that’s the secret: really wanting to know. Keep searching. Don’t give up. Just keep going.

20 www.guidedsynergy.ca

I learned my purpose through a series of events and by paying close attention. Professional and personal relationships were strained. I searched within and allowed my instincts to lead me. Becoming more familiar with chakras, training in reiki and shamanic healing, attending workshops, meditation— anywhere I felt I should be, I went. I met dozens of people waiting to help me and teach me. Once I realized my purpose, the difficult relationships, the reasons for leaving, all of this made sense. I was there to help them move on, which meant I had to as well.

Marilyn Lacoste is a career and life coach specializing in changing careers after loss or injury. She is the mother of three daughters and has training in reiki and shamanic healing. Her insights help others move forward with their lives, and she strives to help others better understand the natural process. Photography by Marilyn's eldest daughter, Meagan Lacoste

Allowing our intuition to guide us while letting go of the control that we are in control is essential to finding our given path. Two years ago, I turned to my oldest daughter and said, “The next vacation I give will be to you.” I didn’t know how or when or why or where. I was single then, raising my youngest. I wasn’t financially secure. Going on vacation didn’t seem realistic, but as soon as I said it, I knew it would occur. A higher power had spoken, not me. I was to listen and trust. Many changes have happened since that day, but the dream turned to reality. Earlier today, she stood and walked towards a couple sitting nearby. She picked something up. I thought it was a towel that had fallen in the sand. She later told me she had seen money fall out of the man’s hat and had gone to catch it before it blew away. She gave it back to them. They had been unaware and were grateful. At that moment, I knew that this was partly why I had said what I did, so that she could be here at that moment and do something good for someone else. She is here to help others too. The cost of the vacation, the hours of extra work, the changes that had to occur and everything else that’s happened so far have all been more than worth it. Miracles happen all the time, like this trip. Watch for them and just keep going.

SUMMER: THE SEASON OF GROWTH Tend your inner garden

S

ummer is truly a celebration of the earth’s incredible bounty. It’s a festival of inner fire, heat and warmth that creates abundance and provides nourishment for those tiny seeds that were planted in the spring. A time for new beginnings and growth! June 20, the solstice this year, marks the beginning of summer. Solstice comes from a Latin word meaning “sun standing still”— and stand still is what it seems to do on this day, the longest day of the year. According to the Canadian Farmers’ Almanac, in the Peace Country the sun will rise at 5:14 a.m. and set at 10:39 p.m., offering us 17 hours and 25 minutes of daylight. You really should get out there and enjoy it, because it only happens once a year! There’s so much to celebrate at this time of year. Fullness abounds, with sweetly scented flowers, fresh air, warm breezes and showers, the sun’s embrace and nature’s bounty and colours. It’s a time to dig your toes in the sand, kick back with a cold beverage and relax. Or to reconnect with the earth by going for long nature walks and paying close attention to the sounds, smells and activity that surround you. Oh, and those long days spent making cherished memories with family and friends around the fire, at backyard barbecues and on fun excursions. Some of my best memories have been made in flip-flops! For millennia, civilizations across the

22 www.guidedsynergy.ca

Northern Hemisphere have celebrated summer solstice, also know as midsummer. Our ancestors endowed this day with great significance. Celebrations included festivals, bonfires, ceremonial dances, sacrificial worship and other rituals, some of which survive today or have been revived for our modern times. Bonfires signified a group’s connection to the vital power of the sun, the immense burning star that keeps our planet bright, warm, alive and flourishing. We, too, have a responsibility to shine as brightly as we can. Where’s the fire in your belly? Is it time for new growth? Summer also teaches the virtue of patience. The tiny seeds you planted in the spring have been slowly growing and are now producing green fruit. No matter how much you try to hasten the ripening, it cannot be rushed. Earth Mother encourages you to sit back and let go of the need to control the process, resisting the urge for your ego to take control. Slow and rhythmic, the fruit will ripen in its own time, reaching fullness without any effort on your part. While you wait, ponder how you will nurture and grow the ideas, dreams and intentions you’ve planted in your inner being. This is also a time to be thankful for Earth Mother’s generosity as she gives you everything you need. Discover your earth connection by receiving her gifts with respect, taking from her only what you need

and minimizing your impact on the delicate balance of our planet. This is a wonderful time to make a list of ten things you are truly grateful for. Don’t forget to tend your inner fields this summer, and see what you harvest this fall. Use this solstice energy to become a fertile ground for creating the life you are meant to live and to inspire those around you. On June 20, join me and others at Muskoseepi Park in downtown Grande Prairie as we bring our community together to celebrate the summer solstice, giving thanks for the sun, the people, our planet and everything on it. This event is free and everyone is welcome! Denise Ouellette is the co-author of Frock Off: Living Undisguised and a contributor to 100 Tips for Teenagers, both awardwinning books. A long-time volunteer and a go-getter, she values a strong, vibrant and supportive community. She is co-founder of The Handmade Marketplace and Grande Prairie’s Midsummer Solstice Celebration in the Park.

FIND YOUR CALLING

Become the artist of your own life I

n 2014, I was working in the IT department of one of the largest railway companies in North America. Life was good. I worked in a great environment, making a great salary. But I didn’t feel content—and most importantly, I wasn’t happy. So in February 2015, I walked away from my job with no other job in sight. I started searching for something more, and that is when the journey began. Think of finding your calling like creating your first painting. You are an aspiring artist, but you’re not sure what type of paint you have, let alone what kind of painting you’re going to do. Leonardo da Vinci has been credited with this observation: “It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” Nothing will change unless you change it. You must paint in the direction of your dreams. Defining the artist This is one of the most enlightening parts of finding your calling, because you get to define yourself. I believe we’re all here to better ourselves, and there are a lot of ways to do this. I left a well-paying job with great benefits and room for advancement. I gave this all up to figure myself out and to figure out how I wanted to paint my life. My last two weeks at that job were both freeing and exciting; everyone, despite what I had expected, was so supportive of my change.

24 www.guidedsynergy.ca

Although leaving my job was the right move for me, it’s not the answer for everyone and I don’t recommend it. But I didn’t just quit without a plan. I knew that in life if you do the same things, you’re going to get the same results. So, leading up to my departure, I made real life changes. I meditated, planned and took courses. I literally did my homework. I knew there was something more for me, and there’s something more for you too. When I’m helping others find their calling, I ask them this golden question: What would you like to see different in the world? Build off that—but know that the answer might not come right away. When it does, write it down. Your first inclination will be the strongest and you have to trust that. Bring on the paint! Your desires, passion and motivation are your paint. Defining them will bring the whole picture together for you. Without paint, there’s only a blank canvas. When I left my job I was scared, but I was also driven, determined to change my situation. My motivation was to find my calling. It’s hard, but you will find yours. Life will definitely give you signs. Watch for them! I know firsthand that being unhappy where you are is your first sign. Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen and make a list of 10 things, career-wise, that not only make you happy but, most importantly, excite you. The list doesn’t have to be related

to a specific job, but should contain things you would like a job to provide for you, such as travel, money or the opportunity to help people. You’ll be surprised what you come up with, but as off-the-wall as your ideas may sound, follow through with the list. In the movie Ever After, the character of Leonardo da Vinci said, “A life without love is no life at all.” I love what I do now. I get to work with people from all walks of life, inspiring and empowering them on their journey. It’s easy to forget what it took to get here, but I wouldn’t trade any of those experiences for the world. Some were hard and some were easy, but every day I am grateful to be in the place I am. You have to remember that you make life happen; life doesn’t happen to you. Be willing to take steps every day, no matter how big or small, to find your calling. Fill your canvas with all the experiences of your life and put into practice what you’ve learned. Changing the world—and changing your world—starts with you. SPIRITUALITY

A SIMPLE SMUDGING CEREMONY Clearing negative energy based on tradition

B

urning plants to create sacred smoke is an integral part of numerous religions and cultures around the world. The term smudging traditionally refers to a practice used for millennia by many Indigenous communities in North America. While the details of the practice vary by community, Indigenous smudging ceremonies are generally used to cleanse a person, an object or a place of negative energy. When performed before a meeting or activity, smudging allows participants to clear their minds, let go of negative thoughts and focus on the event. Today, similar ceremonies are often used in non-Indigenous contexts to cleanse spaces such as homes and businesses, as well as objects and people. Here are some steps you can use to perform a simple ceremony to cleanse a space. First, gather your supplies. There are various plant materials to choose from; sage is commonly used. It may be in a bundle

or loose. In traditional practices, spiritual medicines are gathered from the earth. If you’re not able to gather your own materials, you can buy them (for example, see page 18 in this issue). If you buy your material, be sure that it comes from a reputable source and doesn’t contain any toxins. A bowl to hold the plant material is useful, and essential if the material is loose. You will also need a feather or something similar to push the smoke around the area. Lastly, gather your potency and your intentions to spread love and harmony into the space. Next, light the material. You want an ember, not a flame, to create smoke. Before moving around the space, you can say a prayer to help set your intentions to release negative energies and replace them with love and harmony. Depending on your beliefs, you might invite your higher self, angels, guides or divine beings to assist you. Move around the space. Starting at the door, move methodically through every

corner, closet and room, sweeping the negativity out of the space. You can open windows during the process, depending on the weather and your preferences. As you move, hold your intention of clearing away all that is no longer desired and of welcoming in love and light. Finish at the door where you began and push all the negativity out the door, blessing it for transformation and transmutation. Close with gratitude. Complete this beautiful ceremony with a closing prayer of gratitude to the space, yourself and any divine beings that assisted you. I like to smudge my space and sacred items at the turning of each season and whenever else I feel it’s needed. "There are as many incarnations as pathways to them." AWAKEN TO YOUR TRUE SELF

Awakening to the True Self is a clear path to awakening. Are you ready to awaken to your True Self Frequency through the Human Design System? I invite you to respond to the information and be initiated to contact me.

Synergy Bookshelf VOICELESS WHISPERS: TUNING INTO NATURE’S MESSAGES COMPILED BY: M.J. DOMET In her second book, Voiceless Whispers, M.J. Domet has compiled a beautiful collection of works by various storytellers and writers celebrating the potential relationship between humans and animals. Through affirmations, poetry and stories, the book offers readers a specific sense of awakening. When I first read this book, I found myself paying much closer attention to crows and ravens; out on the balcony, driving in the car, I watched. And then, as my awareness started to stretch beyond its former state, I began to listen intently, and I opened up to these winged messengers provided by the universe. Voiceless Whispers opens readers up to this sense of heart. Domet leads us through different encounters—with creatures as varied as horses and bumblebees—to provide a space for this opening. Her ability to connect with this level of openness within the heart is conveyed in such a simple and digestible way that the book seems more an invitation than a request. It’s like sitting down for coffee with a friend to hear her funny pet stories. Whether these messengers come in the form of a pet, a presence or an actual animal that seems to be following us around, their messages can be extremely useful for our growth and moving forward. To stretch upward and out of our current state, we must possess a childlike curiosity and willingness to listen to all sources of wisdom. I am sure you’ve seen the ease with which most children approach animals—as if they understand, when, realistically, they are simply listening without any sense of “mind.” Within this listening lies so much power and compassion. A softness lingers long after reading the book and, given the opportunity, it can come out in every single interaction. Whether you have always held a deep connection with the animal kingdom or you’re interested in what this would entail, this book is a great companion on your personal journey, with heartwarming stories for everybody.

LEANN WOLFF Frequency Coach

Trying to pick a favourite quote from the book was a challenge, but I will close with one of the more general yet extremely profound understandings shared between its covers: “The greatest challenge is to understand that the natural world is not separate from humankind; it is the part of us that recognizes ourselves. The sun rises each morning and sets each evening as we do. We—and nature—have our gloomy days when we need to be introspective and our sunny days when we are outgoing and fun-loving. Nature—like us—has a time for rebirth, a time to grow, and a time to die.”
