Fabulous, Fun-filled FantaSea!

FantaSea encourages their guests to purchase a combined ticket that includes both the spectacular theater show and the pre-show dinner and most guests choose this option. www.theguidephuket.com

T

here is a word in the Thai language, ‘sanook’, that means fun and it is widely believed that if something is not ‘sanook’ the Thai people will not touch it with a ten foot pole! Little wonder then that the amazing FantaSea complex keeps growing in popularity with both Thai people and international visitors to this beautiful tropical island of Phuket. Designed as the first Thai cultural theme park, FantaSea opened its doors on 20th December, 1998 and is now the longest running permanent show in Asia. This ground breaking enterprise was conceived and created by the prominent and farsighted Thai businessman, Mr. Pin Kewkacha and both he and his talented son and daughter, Kittikorn and Supida are still closely involved in every aspect of the day-to-day

operations. Attention to even the smallest detail is the key to FantaSea’s great success and the whole operation moves like a well oiled machine with only one aim, to ensure that all visitors have a fun-filled experience. The FantaSea park covers around 14,500 square meters of land just outside the popular beach resort of Kamala, 30 minutes from Phuket airport and close to all the main beach resorts of the island. The imposing entrance to the park leads you into ample parking areas and well lit drop points for cars and busses. You immediately sense an air of excitement as the bright lights and theme features come into view and you enter a world of enchantment. You can linger awhile at the main entrance to feed the tumbling rush of large fish that inhabit the lake area and then take a leisurely stroll across the ornate bridge that leads into the main village area. Here you will find everything to delight, educate and amaze! A beautiful shopping village awaits you, with handicraft demonstrations, carnival games, cultural parades and street shows. A stunning Chinese Dragon Dance was in progress on my last visit and the music and color set the scene for what was to come. A safari adventure walk, complete with some beautiful white tigers, has

recently been added and lots of tasty snacks are on offer at the many stalls, as well as a spacious beer garden for the more ‘relaxed’ visitors. A stroll through this vibrant landscape brings you to the amazing area of the Floating village. Ornate Thai golden barges float on the waterways as you cross the bridge to the superb restaurants that form the culinary heart of the park. The Golden Kinnaree buffet restaurant and the Golden Pavilion seafood restaurant welcome you to a sumptuous feast in spacious and comfortable surroundings. FantaSea encourages their guests to purchase a combined ticket that includes both the spectacular theater show and the pre-show dinner and most guests choose this option. There is a choice of Thai and regional fare at the main buffet or a more expensive seafood and western food option and both are well worth trying. Dinner service starts at 6.30 pm and continues until the main theater show starts at 9 pm so the restaurants are never crowded and the multiple service points mean that there is never a queue for food. Just across from the Floating Village is the beautiful Palace of the Elephants Theater which celebrates the ancient architecture of Thailand in all its magnificent glory. It is a most imposing building with large paved terraces and a spacious central square that bustles with elephants! Here you can take the opportunity of riding one of these magnificent beasts and getting a true taste of old Siam! As you cross the bridge to enter the Palace you sense the excitement of what is still to come. I must have seen the show at least ten times over the last 14 years and it just keeps getting better! As you wend your way through the entry to the main theater you glimpse the photographs of the hundreds of celebrities who have experienced the show before you and you certainly do get caught up in the glamour of it all. The theater is spectacular with 3,000 seats each with an unimpeded view of the action that takes place over a stage frontage of over 60 meters with state-of-the-art sound and light and special effects. With plush seating and comfortable climate control the entire theater complex is also Asia’s largest permanent show facility and a true icon of Thailand’s entertainment industry. The large assembly of elephants (the

largest number in the world for any indoor theater show), tigers, goats, chickens and assorted birds are ably joined by the 400 human cast and crew to create 75 minutes of fast-packed action and special effects. The mythical adventure traces the exploits of the young Prince of Kamala, together with his magic elephant Iyara, who is a direct descendant of the ancestral elephant lords who built the kingdom. The Prince sets out to rediscover his true Thai heritage, with all its diverse regional cultures, win the heart of the lady and defeat the half man and half buffalo warriors No visit to Phuket would be complete led by the fiendish Demon Lord. All in without experiencing this magical a normal day’s work realm. for the energetic young Prince! Music is the main medium of the story and the very little spoken dialogue is in both Thai and English languages, so a real feast of enjoyment for all nationalities. The sound and light effects of the production are truly magical and I am still pondering how they could recreate a tropical storm, complete with torrential rain, on stage. Amazing costumes, great choreography and a ballet sequence that has to be seen to be believed all combine to bring the best of modern theater to the rich cultural heritage of this Land of Smiles. tel: +66 76 385 000 No visit to Phuket would be complete www. phuket-fantasea.com without experiencing this magical realm. www.facebook.com/theguidephuket

small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.

The most famous beach on the island is the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colorful and lively mix that typifies a Thai tourist beach town.

ON The Island

t’s a big island, offering all manner of things to do. It’s surprising that so many holiday makers, who are trying to get away from it all, soon get bored with that dreamy combination of a perfect beach, a comfortable hotel room and great food. After a few days, most people want more. They want to go places, to see how the local people live and to experience new things. Happily, with Phuket being a large island, about 50 kilometres long, there are all sorts of interesting things to do here. Below we offer some suggestions.

Phuket Town

Phuket Town is small but incredibly interesting, a potpourri of different cultural influences, of markets and shopping centres, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. Anyone spending a few days on Phuket Island should take time to visit, be it for sight-seeing, cultural or historical interest, or shopping. should show respect in keeping well dressed and remaining quiet, Mum and Dad; keep the kids on a leash and always be culturally sensitive.

Elephant Trekking

The wild elephant population of Phuket was wiped out last century, but has been replaced in recent years by an influx of animals for the tourist trade. Today there remains just a few hundred elephants on Phuket Island, all domesticated, most working in tourism.

Patong Beach

Crowded Beach, Quiet Beach - Find the one that suits you

Spend most of your holiday in Patong and you might think the beaches of Phuket are crowded. While Patong buzzes with people and activity, there are many other beaches to which one can escape in complete solitude. You just have to drive. As one moves away from Patong the beaches become progressively quieter. www.theguidephuket.com

By the time you get to the top of the island you’re guaranteed kilometres of sand to yourself, even in peak season, so remember crowded beach, quiet beach; the choice is there.

Visiting Wats – Buddhist Monasteries

All Buddhist Monasteries are open to the public during the day, and visitors are usually welcome. Since these are active holy places of worship, and the residence of monks, visitors

Zoo

Phuket’s only zoo is small, but pleasant, displaying some of Thailand’s almost vanished wildlife. Their tigers are fed well enough that one can sit with them and have a photo taken. We recommend going early or late, to avoid the tour buses that arrive mid morning and mid afternoon. It is in a small road off the east side of Chao Fah Road, about half way between the town and Chalong’s 5-way intersection. The turnoff is well signposted and easy to find.

Indeed, riding an elephant is an experience not to be missed. The lumbering monsters are incredibly agile. Taking an elephant ride helps to keep the beasts employed, fed and out of the cities, where many can be

View Points

Phuket’s most famous view point, Laem Phrom Thep at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor to the island. Thus it attracts a fleet of tour buses and cars each evening as people come to witness the sun fall

into the Andaman Sea. Indeed, it’s often a spectacular sight, but there are many quieter places. The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people and when the heavens turn red, the view from any of the beaches can also be spectacular.

for all the budding botanists out there.

Jungle Trekking

With most of the rainforest on Phuket long since eaten up by rubber plantations, it is not so easy to find ideal trekking grounds. Again, it’s best to sign on with a company providing this service. Often they take their trekkers right off Phuket into neighbouring Phang Nga province, where some beautiful areas of forest remain.

The day boat tours generally just pass by this islet, giving tourists only the quick glimpse that it deserves, so that they can spend their time amongst the more spectacular parts of the bay.

A visit to Phang Nga Bay on the east side of Phuket is the one big ‘musts’ for visitor to this region. For many tourists, Phuket & the Andaman Sea

area is a heaven on Earth

Phuket is frequently voted one of the top tourist destinations in the world because of its beauty, the warmth of the Thai people, its food and culture, and because it is still one of the most cost-effective places to visit in the world.

C Some say it is paradise on Earth. Others say it is heaven on Earth. Whatever label you want to use, Phuket is certainly a great destination for the tourist.

an you picture this: lying back on a beach chair in the cool shade of an umbrella? Beautiful turquoise water gently laps a pearly white soft sand beach. Puffy white cotton ball clouds just hang in the sharp blue sky. There is no sound. It is idyllic. Nearby, a Thai lady is massaging a client in the deep shade of her awning. The client is almost asleep. The massage is heavenly. Further back from the beach is a beautiful resort; far enough away to give you a sense of isolation, but close enough for you to return to your room, or the pool, or to a favorite bar. You are not worrying about the bank manager as this trip is not costing you an arm and a leg. You think you have arrived in heaven on Earth. You have. Phuket and the surrounding Andaman Sea area is frequently voted one of the top tourist destinations in the world for very good reasons.

Lifestyle / 31

The area is stunningly beautiful, with fine white sand beaches overhung by tropical green trees, warm clear waters offering a huge range of marine sports activities, amazing sea cliffs, warm friendly Thais, and some of the best food available anywhere in the world. It is a holiday-maker’s playground with something to offer no matter what the season is, backed by a wide range of accommodation – from the super luxurious, to the very best deluxe, to basic and budget. Some say it is paradise on Earth. Others say it is heaven on Earth. Whatever label you want to use, Phuket is certainly a great destination for the tourist. The following is some general information that we hope readers find helpful. There is also some specific information of which travelers might want to take note. Phuket has two seasons. The “dry” season running from November to May and the “wet” season running from May until November. Both offer quite different activities for visitors and both are worthy of consideration. Many tourists visit Phuket during the “dry” season when the breeze comes in from the north-east. This normally means the western beaches along the island are near flat calm with either a gentle lapping of sea on these beautiful west-facing beaches, or a nice friendly swell if a wind is coming in from the Indian Ocean. It can be a busy time for tourist operators with many day trips to the outer islands like Phi Phi Don or Phi Phi Lei, or trips into the northern section of Phang Nga Bay. www.facebook.com/theguidephuket

32 / Lifestyle

During the “dry” season, the temperatures range from 21 to 34 degrees Celsius with the cooler period running from November to February. April is the hottest month of the year. The wind comes from the south-west during the “wet” season which can create surf along the west coast of Phuket, but very calm conditions in Phang Nga Bay. This season is more humid and it can pour with rain, but this rain normally clears quickly leaving a clear sky. This can be a spectacular time of the year for photographers. So what can you do with your time in Phuket?

Scuba diving trips are normally to the area around Phi Phi Don and there are longer live-aboard excursions to the Simian Islands, rated in the top ten dive sites in the world.

www.theguidephuket.com

Many tourists just lie on the beaches. These are generally wide with soft sand and backed by trees for shade. Many of the popular beaches feature loungers and umbrellas, which you can rent for the day. Most beaches during the “dry” season are safe with no undertow. On some beaches you can take a para-sail. These are huge parachutes towed by a speed boat. A guide will “fly” with you and help with the take-off and landing. They are very exciting. Most of the big beaches also have massage facilities as well as some drink and food. Many of the hotels, resorts and spas are close to the beach. Some back on to the beach so you can choose either to hang out around the hotel pool or swim in the sea, or both. All have information on the things you can do during your stay in Phuket. A popular thing to do is take a trip in a speed boat to Phi Phi Don and/or Phi Phi Lei. The latter was made famous by the film

The Beach. The huge limestone cliffs on both islands will give you a sense of what you could see if you take another trip to the northern end of Phang Nga Bay. In the north of Phang Nga Bay are more than 40 islands, many of them gigantic limestone sculptures that rear vertically from the milky-green sea. You will never forget a visit to this area, never. If you are keen on fishing, then there are many possibilities. These range from trips for beginners, to serious big game fishing excursions, normally to the south end of Koh Racha. Your hotel will help with recommendations. Scuba diving trips are normally to the area around Phi Phi Don and there are longer live-aboard excursions to the Simian Islands, rated in the top ten dive sites in the world. There is excellent snorkeling as well. And then there is the night life. Most hotels, resorts and spas have their own entertainment, but there is also plenty of action to be found around the island. A good introduction is to wander down Bangla Road in Patong after 6.30pm. The road runs from east to west towards the beach. It is a walking street, closed to traffic at night, when it becomes the haunt of many, including the famed “ladyboys.” There are a huge number of bars and restaurants to choose from and the Jungceylon and Promenade Shopping Malls are always a good escape from the heat and noise. Don’t forget to visit the Surin area in the north and Karon, Kata and Rawai in the south. All are worth a visit and each area has its own special appeal. And don’t forget the center of the island around Central Festival, and Phuket Town itself. The latter is the main administration center. It also includes a very old “Sino-Portuguese” area bounded by Dibruk, Phuket, Rasada and Yaowarat Roads. There are excellent restaurants in this area tucked away and not always obvious. Get yourself a brochure and map and go visit. Transport across the island is cheap. There are Tuk Tuk trucks and even motor bikes for the adventurous. Some of the out-of-theway places to visit include the Royal Phuket Marina (restaurants, art gallery, coffee shops and a very exclusive Paul Ropp clothing store), the seafood restaurants at Laem Hin Port just north of Phuket Town (rustic but a real gem for foodies) and the Saturday and Sunday afternoon and evening market on Anuphas Road (which runs east/west between Chaofa West and Phuket Town.

If you are keen on fishing, then there are many possibilities. These range from trips for beginners, to serious big game fishing excursions, normally to the south end of Koh Racha.

ITB Berlin 2012 7th - 11th March 2012 (Phuket Hall 26B Stand No. 210-211) Welcome From Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation Tourists often ask me why Phuket is so popular; why it is often voted one of the top places in the world for tourists to visit. The answer is easy. Firstly, we welcome tourists as if they are members of our own family – with a smile and with kindness. We have absolutely stunning golden sand beaches which are washed by the beautiful warm waters of the Andaman Sea. These beaches with their wonderful warm sunsets are a great place to visit and are especially popular with visitors wanting to escape the cold of European winters! They are also within easy reach of some of the best hotels, resorts and spas in the world. Many of these hotels and resorts will be represented in person at the ITB at Berlin in March 7-11, 2012. Phuket is a great place to escape to for a holiday. You can take a day trip to the stunning limestone karsts which rear vertically from the sea in Phang Nga Bay, visit the famous James Bond Island, take a bike tour across Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi and experience life in the quiet lane, or visit the beautiful islands of Phi Phi Don and the film-famous Phi Phi Lei. Phuket is good value for money. Our accommodation rates are highly competitive, our professional service is delivered with a traditional Thai smile, our food is the best in the world and our massage steeped in Thai culture. We are a very open and welcoming society. Come and join us. Best regards, Manop Leelasuthanon Chief Administrator of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation

Welcome From Phuket Tourist Association I would like to introduce our team traveling to the ITB in Berlin. We will be in Berlin again because we have something highly prized and valuable to promote - our beautiful Phuket and Andaman Region. The members of our team represent many of the best hotels and resorts in the region. All are members of the Phuket Tourist Association. All are highly professional and very proud of the “story” they have to tell, what they have to offer, and who they represent. I would also like to thank the PPAO and acknowledge the crucial role they have played in our presence at the ITB. This is an excellent “investment” by our political leadership in the major industry on the island, which is tourism. And lastly, I would like to introduce our team traveling to Berlin. The hotels and resorts they represent are featured on the following pages of The Guide Phuket. This magazine, which is also available to tourists in Phuket, contains features which will give readers an idea of some of the huge range of activities available in our region. Come and see and enjoy for yourselves. Kind regards, Somboon Chirayus President Phuket Tourist Association www.theguidephuket.com

T

hanyapura is the most extraordinary enterprise, an almost mythic new Camelot rising sheer and white in the Phuket sunshine, surrounded by forest in a quiet valley in northeastern Phuket. DiVine restaurant sits at the heart of the 23 hectare Thanyapura megaplex which comprises of Sports and Leisure Club, Thanyapura Resort, Thanya pura Retreat and Mind Centre, Thanyapura Spa, Integrated Heath Centre, Booster Bar, Retail shops and Phuket International Academy. It can perhaps be characterized as a modern temple to the Greek philosopher Seneca’s idea of human perfection as: “ Mens sana in corpore sano”.....a healthy mind in a healthy body. DiVine is dedicated to this ethos of human perfection seeking to match the ideal with gustatory perfection and purity featuring organic gourmet cuisine made from fresh, locally-farmed ingredients from Thanyapura’s own organic farm at Thanyamundra which is located near www.theguidephuket.com

Khao Sok National Park a couple of hours north of Phuket and is certified by the Thai Agricultural Department. Perhaps the first prejudice to dispel is that DiVine’s healthy organic eating in any way equates with austerity or privation. In fact DiVine restaurant is a luscious welcoming space decorated in natural woods and psychedelic flower arrangements, with a huge and spotless central open kitchen and beguiling Pontillistic oils and acrylics decorating the colourful walls. It has extensive floorto-ceiling windows which open out onto a large patio, with deep blue swimming pools beyond, where weekend markets are regularly held and a sumptuous DiVine brunch is presented to complement these gatherings. DiVine’s Chef, Sathaporn Bootmeechai, is no stranger to the world of healthy eating. His menu features a large array of light, fresh soups. salads, noodle dishes, burgers, sandwiches fish and meat course, pizzas and even tempting desserts, all of which conform to the healthy and organic ethos in varying degrees.

The menu overtly rates the dishes as to the degree of their organic credentials and then categorises them into groups such as “fresh and moreish; rich and explosive and sweet and seductive” all attributes that this writer seeks as much in his girl friend as he does in his food! Not to be outdone, the drinks and wine list explores all the normal avenues of ethanol-based decadence such as champagnes, martinis and mojitos, but also offers a broad choice of healthy blended juices, smoothies and “organic boosters” such as Purple Pleasure with pineapple, beetroot and apple, or Virgin Temptation of coconut, strawberries and carrot juice. T h e wine list joins the organic fray as well and we enjoyed a speciallysourced Australian Sauvignon Blanc from the Victoria’s Yarra Valley branded appropriately enough as “Splash”. Having dispelled the idea that we would have to suffer in any way in order to hone our razor-sharp minds in our magnificent bodies, we proceeded to the lunch table to take up cudgels with an opening sandwich

platter with choices of smoked salmon, beef pastrami, salami, turkey roll, and specially-sourced Australian and Dutch Emmental, Gruyere and Cheddar cheeses. Organic iceberg lettuce and rocket from Thanyapura’s Khao Sok farm accompanied these in a Parma Ham and cheese salad. The main event offered a beetroot and Feta Ravioli salad, spaghetti with lamb balls, green peas, mushrooms and white cream sauce, and a beautiful rack of organic New Zealand lamb with garlic potato puree and a red wine sauce. All dishes were so light and fresh that we even had a little tummy space available for a naughty dessert of organic chocolate truffle cake and mango ice cream and a final glass of “Splash” safe in the belief that the more we drank the more perfect our bodies would become. Nick Seaver CEO of Thanyapura says “We are deeply concerned with the heavy amounts of chemicals used to produce food in Thailand, this was the reason for Thanyamundra Organic Farm. By serving organic fresh local food at DiVine we are able

to provide great tasting products and we believe there is real value in eating natural, fresh, organic foods thereby improving our guests’ health and wellbeing”. Perhaps DiVine is redefining Seneca’s famous view of human perfection as: “Broma to sana in corpore sano”.....a healthy meal in a healthy body.

Centara Grande

Buffets Phuket with Buffets T

he Cove Restaurant at the Centara Grande Resort has found a cure for terminal gourmet indecision! Are you anything like me when it comes to choosing from a menu brimming with delectable temptations from starter to dessert? We spoilt children of the Internet Age are becoming increasingly prone to wanting “everything….all the time” it seems. When a lovely waitress approaches me with a broad smile and inquires what I would like to select from the delicious menu I am always tempted to say, “Well….everything actually.” Panic not. The beautiful Centara Grande Resort nestled right on the sands of Karon Beach has come up with an excellent solution for this terminal case of dining indecision. Each evening they offer a differently-themed buffet at their delightful The Cove Restaurant, each one featuring a veritable cornucopia of wondrous food www.theguidephuket.com

from which to choose. Each night a huge selection of dishes is laid out around the “grazing tables” so that happy guests can take their time (and their insatiable appetites) from station to station and load up time and again on an abundance of goodies. From soups to salads, to pasta and pizzas; from roasts, steaks, sea foods and fish, to curries and Thai favorites; and from tempting desserts of every stripe to a marvelous selection of cheeses and breads…..it is all there and more. It’s an indecisive diner’s dream come true and the greatest thing about it is that it’s all very reasonably priced. Each week there are no less than five separate buffets from which to choose rotating day by day………. Welcome to Thailand offers fabulous local fare from all the main regions of the Kingdom for just 790 ++baht a head Silk Road offers panoply of vibrant Asian dishes from the main regional cuisines from all around the continent for just 890 ++baht a head. Mediterranean Night showcases a selection from every major cuisine around the southern Mediterranean Sea……Greek,

Food & Restaurants / 47

Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Moroccan and North African dishes joust for attention and there are even influences from Germany France, Switzerland and Holland all for just 890 ++baht a head. Steakhouse Night is of course for the trenchermen amongst us and really is well worth starving yourself for, as the choice is quite staggering….and I mean that literally! Priced at 990 ++baht a head. Seafood Safari is the final option and is most appropriate as the lovely Cove Restaurant’s outdoor terrace is within earshot of the crashing waves on Karon Beach. All the tiger prawns, lobster, blue crabs, mussels and local fish arrive as if they have actually swum up to the tables and so the proffered denizens of the deep are indelibly fresh and succulent. Just 990 ++baht a head. As if all this choice of food weren’t enough for the undecided hedonist, The Cove Restaurant also throws in a nightly show of singing, dancing and Asian cultural themes energetically performed on a raised outdoor stage surrounded by limped reflective pools of water at the end of the outdoor dining terrace. Or if, as was the case when we dined there, the heavens open and deluge the enthusiastic performers, the show is performed inside the buffet hall itself. It seems that the show, whether theatrical or gourmand, must and does indeed go on every night at The Cove. Dinner reservations for the buffet theme nights are recommended. winpalms is located close to the sands of gorgeous Surin Beach and adjacent to “Millionaire’s Mile” and reigns supreme as one of Phuket’s most fashionable resorts. In many ways it is the epicenter and social barometer of all things trendy in Phuket. It’s as if on the Phuket social scene Twinpalms leads and then the rest of the island falls into line and tries to keep up. Certainly it was this way with the bringing of a revolution to Phuket’s tranquil Sundays in the form of something called “doing brunch”. When it was first introduced to Phuket in the early “naughties” this latest social and gustatory phenomenon was as much

about dressing up in one’s finest and going out to “see and be seen” with the island’s glitterati, as it was with the grazing on the bounteous buffet of wonderful foods. Twinpalms brunches soon became legendary as “THE” place for Phuket’s high rollers to partake in Sunday’s longest, most languorous indulgence in fine food and wine. If that weren’t enough, the lovely beach and the resort’s Catch Beach Club are just a short canter away and so Sunday afternoons easily segue onto the sands and continue into the sunset hours. As you wander into the relaxed open space that is the Oriental Spoon Restaurant you’ll see the limpid pools of water, hear

Phuket’s Koffee Culture Keeps on Growing!

You know that feeling? I

t’s 11am and it’s getting hot outside. You need a really good cup of coffee, possibly a naughty Apricot Danish, the latest newspapers and maybe a place to log onto the ‘Net, all in a nice relaxing environment with friendly staff. Where do you turn in Phuket? Well, the short answer is: “an increasing number of places” as Koffee Culture has taken off big time around the island and there are more and more great locations for super coffee and food with all the creature comforts of the finest coffee shop that you might find back home. Here are three great coffee locations to get you started on the Great Phuket Koffee Hunt.

2010 that haven of all things trendy, Twinpalms, joined BAKE by Twinpalms – IntheearlyPhuket Coffee Culture revolution, when they opened two branches of their stylist bakery “Bake” in the north and southern Elegance in a Coffee Cup parts of the island. Their aim was to combine their well known style and service with the produce of a team of master bakers preparing freshly baked goodies to eat with delicious coffees. Their branches in Cherng Talay and on Chaofa West Road opposite Wat Chalong quickly became well-established favorite hangouts for local residents and visiting tourists who love the traditional pavement coffee culture back in Europe’s leading cities. Both Bake outlets offer cool air conditioned indoor, or watchthe-world-go-by outdoor options and the aromas of fresh baked breads, light or full breakfasts, creamy or chocolate pastries and the finest coffees proved irresistible. In January 2012 Bake installed new grinding and roasting facilities at their Cherng Talay outlet allowing them to roast and serve unique hand-crafted Akha coffee beans from the Mae Suai Mountains of northern Thailand – Phuket’s foremost Arabica coffee. Yet another example of Twinpalms leading Phuket’s coffee culture from the front! Learning W

hilst on your holiday in Phuket you will probably have a Thai massage. In fact, no Thai vacation is complete without this experience. Being pulled and prodded will leave you feeling more relaxed and healthier. However, the popularity of Thai massage is such that now there are courses in actually giving them, so that when you return home you can not only share your holiday anecdotes but spread a little of the Thai good will with your hands and feet as well. Thailand has a long history in traditional medicine and massage techniques, and in recent years trends in health and wellbeing have bought these approaches into the mainstream. There is now a real demand for training in Thai massage and Thailand of course offers the most authentic experience for learning these particular techniques. To cater for the increasing demand for training, numerous commercial centres have been established to complement the more traditional institutions, such as Wat Pho in Bangkok, which have existed for hundreds of years. The commercial courses are specifically aimed at visitors with English instruction taking place alongside Thai practitioners. There are a few excellent places on Phuket to take a course in Thai massage, most of them are spas in their own right and specialise in this type of treatment. Expert instructors will teach beginners and even help professional therapists hone their skills and learn new techniques. Traininf is provided by certified and qualified massage therapists and integrated with an education on healthy living for mind and body overall. A good course should be easy to understand and be well structured. You can learn over 100 Thai massage postures and techniques and how acupressure points can relieve ailments such as headaches, insomnia and arthritis.

Thai

Massage The process of learning Thai massage should help you gain a better understanding of Thai culture and its history and people.

One of the best parts about any course is that you will have to practice on each other. This means undergoing a Thai massage at least an hour or two every day as other participants try out their skills on you. This will leave you feeling reinvigorated and prepared for the next day of training. For the last 2,000 years, Buddhist monks have practiced this healing art on their communities in order to make them more robust and able to work. The process of learning Thai massage should help you gain a better understanding of Thai culture and its history and people.

nly a few minutes walk from the mega shopping complex at Jungceylon nestles a quiet oasis, the Sawaddi Patong Resort, where the beautiful Vara Spa is to be found. Situated just off the main pool area of the resort, which affords lovely views of the surrounding hillsides, you enter a peaceful world of discreet opulence. Soft music and seductive scents greet you and the attentive staff, led by Khun Rosanat (Gay) the Spa Manager and Khun Da the Spa Supervisor, guide you through your chosen session. Lots of treatments are on offer including choices of traditional Thai, Swedish or special sports massages and a wide selection of body scrubs and oils (hot and cold) that make every spa session a truly individual www.theguidephuket.com

experience. Whether you are suffering the after-effects of the tropical sun, or just the travel weariness of all that shopping and good living, Vara Spa has a perfect solution for all that ails you. All the products used at the spa are derived from nature and celebrate the healing herbs and plants of Thailand. Most of them sound good enough to eat too and it was a delight to explore all the possibilities. I settled upon 2.5 hours of deliciousness, opting for the ‘Thai Essence’ treatment, which is a special offer from the Spa (Thai Baht 1,995) and really great value for money! The delightful spa treatment rooms incorporate an herbal steam room, full bathroom, Jacuzzi and two very comfortable massage tables. Subtle lighting and cool music enhances the ambience and makes the experience both very private and very restful – the perfect atmosphere for couples or lone travelers looking for a calm, spiritual retreat. Starting with a 15 minute herbal steam bath and a cooling shower we proceeded to a 30 minute body scrub. Sesame, oats and tamarind essence were expertly applied in order to clean and smooth the skin and I could really feel an immediate difference to my skin texture. Another cleansing shower, more big white, fluffy towels and I was

ready for the next process. Traditional Thai massage is now known the world over and the lovely girls at Vara Spa are well trained in this ancient art. Using aromatherapy oils for this one hour treatment they managed to reach and ease those old aches and pains, sooth my troubled brow and leave me weak at the knees and ready for more. My last treatment in this great package was a very expert facial that the Spa calls ‘Queen of Plants Essence’. It was a totally relaxing hour of gentle massage and soothing products, including an icy cold cucumber paste, herbal steaming and numerous mouth-watering lotions that cleansed and nourished my tired skin. A marvelously refreshing experience that left my skin feeling so much smoother and looking so much brighter – an amazing difference. So there I was, two and a half hours later, weak at the knees, relaxed in composure, feeling definitely lighter and brighter and being fed butter cookies and delicious herbal teas by the Spa’s attentive staff. What a perfect way to spend a relaxing few hours in Paradise!

Thai Silk

Woodcarving

Long one of Thailand’s most Most of this comes from the famous products, silk weaving craft centers of Chiang Mai and is still one of the major crafts in again Thai skills show through many rural areas. The variety of in a great variety of items that materials available in Phuket is wide and varies both in design, from the traditional to modern to plain colors, and quality; 2-ply is thin and light, 3-ply or more becomes heavier and more expensive. Tailors, jewelry and souvenir shops in all areas carry silk. Many shops will tailor modern dresses or shorts from silk at a fraction of the price you would pay back home. can be both novel and creative or entirely traditional. Buddha images are one of the standards, but you can find figurines of all kinds and many other offbeat items for home decoration. Thailand makes some great teak furniture, though only a little is available in Phuket.

Ceramics

The two major centers for ceramic production are the well-known Chiang Mai, and Ratburi west of Bangkok. They produce an amazing range of wares from very traditional Thai and even Chinese tableware and decorative items to modern home decor items, the biggest of which you’ll need a truck to move. Some of these more modern items are creative and interesting. There is a fair range spread around the island, but you’ll have to drive and hunt to find it all.

Instant Antiques

This sounds like a contradiction, but this is now a thriving new industry in Thailand that arose in response to the overwhelming demand for beautiful old things and the short supply. Originally, cunning entrepreneurs crafted and carefully ‘aged’ wood, bronze

and stone artworks to sell off as genuine antiques. But they produced such beautiful things that demand grew, and the industry came out into the open. Today whole villages of skilled workers produce beautiful objects of art that appear ancient, but which are sold cheaply as ‘reproductions’. This makes ‘antiques’ available to everyone and takes the pressure off the genuinely old things. Best of all, virtually no-one can tell the difference between the real thing and the reproduction that you place in your home.

Custom Tailoring

This is definitely bargain country in Phuket. Tailors can import their wares easily to Phuket and their overhead costs are low. Skills range from excel-

Central Festival Phuket - Phuket Town

With over 120,000 square meters bursting with prime shopping opportunities and world-class products it is easy to see why this consummate one-stop shopping and entertainment complex is so popular amongst Phuket residents and visitors. With a large selection of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, plus a supermarket and cinemas you can enjoy the largest, most complete shopping and entertainment complex in southern Thailand.

Located centrally in Patong Beach is the newest addition to the growing trend of shopping malls in Phuket. ‘Jungceylon‘ was the old name for Phuket when it was still a prosperous port town and trading in the region was at its peak. This shopping mall retains a lot of the old history of Phuket in its architecture and style and is a joy to visit

for this alone. The choice of goods is world-class, comprising well over 300 shops with ample car parking space, restaurants, bars, cinema and bowling alley along with everything else you could possibly need for a busy day shopping.

Weekend Market - Phuket Town

The Jatujak (or JJ) weekend market in Bangkok is world famous but few people realize that there is an equally good alternative here in Phuket, albeit on a smaller scale. Situated opposite the Naka Temple (which is also worth a visit) outside of Phuket Town, just 5 minutes from Central Festival on the Chao Fa West Road lies Phuket’s equivalent to Bangkok’s JJ Market. Here you will find all manner of things for sale from seemingly useless second-hand household junk and cute little trinkets to garden ornaments, clothing and ideal presents for all your friends and family. There is also an abundance of food and drink stalls to keep the energy levels up whilst you wander around. The market starts in the afternoon and goes on until the evening time when it can get really very lively.

These taxi motor cycle drivers are easily identified by their special colored jackets showing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets.

H

ow much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways.

To and from the airport

Airport transfers are relatively simple. The airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibuses are available to get to the major beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available and are cheaper than the airport limousines, as are ‘private’ taxis but we suggest you avoid these since problems have been known to occur. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National have offices located in the airport.

Airlines in & out of Phuket

A multitude of airlines now run scheduled flights to and from Phuket and during high season chartered flights are also available. Budget airlines such as Air Asia, Nok Air and One-2-Go Air all run convenient and economical flights to other provinces throughout Thailand.

is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colorful with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every major beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise slowly around the streets picking up passengers. Songtaews are slow but cheap with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

‘Tuk-Tuks’

If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck converted in the manner of the bigger song-taews mentioned above to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are fleets of these in all major tourist areas and they will take you anywhere for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can attempt to bargain but don’t expect much movement on their prices and be aware that at night the price of tuk-tuks shoots up. You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself.

Motorcycle Taxis

These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet There are few buses on Phuket and the nerve wracking, way to get around. All main form of transport from beach to town fares must be negotiated before the ride.

Renting a Motorcycle

Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but do be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand, with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times and all riders to wear helmets – even though most Thais (including the police!) ignore the regulations. Also motor cycle lights must be turned on at all times, including during the daytime! The police occasionally enforce all these laws, so beware. The real danger in Phuket is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. If you rent one and cause damage you will be held fully responsible, with some greedy owners charging significantly more than the real cost of the damage. Be extremely cautious!

Renting Your Own Car

Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are readily found in every beach area and major rental companies operate in most resorts. When renting private vehicles from the side of the road be aware that few of these vehicles have insurance and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out.
