EDITORIAL With the vaccination campaign currently underway in Thailand, the hopes of returning to a time where visitors are not required to undergo quarantine are getting higher. Phuket most certainly needs to see the return of foreign tourists as the island relies almost entirely on the tourism industry. The next few months will be crucial if we want to return to a pre-Covid era when life was certainly simpler and businesses thrived. - Kamin

The resort currently operates two food & beverage outlets, both located on the beachfront. Those are Jaras Restaurant, a Thai fine dining restaurant where local cuisine has been creatively reimagined and lovingly prepared with the freshest local ingredients, and Pine Beach Club, the perfect venue to toast another heavenly evening in Phuket or simply to share a lazy lunch with friends. The breakfast itself was served at Jaras, and offered a mix of buffet items and Cocooned between the lush vegetation

LIFE IS A BEACH With more than 30 beaches to choose from, the island of Phuket stands for its nickname, which is the Pearl of Andaman. Whether you seek to experience the tranquillity of Mai Khao Beach or prefer to mingle among the crowd on Patong Beach, our handy guide will help you find the perfect spot to get the suntan you’ve been dreaming of.

THE GUIDE PHUKET | March 2021
OUR TOP PICKS
Every month, our team selects for you the top 3 beaches you should visit while staying in Phuket. All of them have their pros and cons, so we try to provide a good mix between the popular ones and the less crowded ones. Mai Khao Beach: Located north of Phuket International Airport, Mai Khao Beach is a lovely beach to escape the crowds. The long stretch of sand seems to go on and on, while the soft sand and clear waters are stunning. Mai Khao Beach is almost always empty, which gives the beach a very deserted feeling, even during high season when some of the island’s other beaches are crowded. Karon Beach: Located on the island’s west coast, Karon Beach stretches as far as the eye can see. It’s a favorite amongst tourists, and within close proximity to Patong. During certain times of the year, the current can be rather rough here, so always best to exercise caution before going for a swim. Kamala Beach: Kamala Beach is a 3-kilometer long stretch of beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast. Essentially a fisherman’s village, Kamala Beach is family-friendly with soft sand and excellent sunsets. Behind the beach, there is a strip of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops in case you forgot anything needed for your holiday.
WHAT TO DO WHEN A JELLYFISH STINGS YOU? Let’s face it: this is certainly something you’d prefer to avoid when enjoying a day at the beach, but the Andaman Sea contains its fair share of the translucent animal. Below is a quick recap on the symptoms one can suffer from a sting and the best way to treat someone suffering from it. Remember that you should always call for a lifeguard to assist you should you be in pain after getting out of the water.
SYMPTOMS
WHAT TO DO
Severe pain on the wound, back, trunk or head;
Bring the injured person out of the sea to a safe place;

ASTONISHING VALUE FOR SUNDAY BRUNCH AT PINE BEACH BAR. The a la carte Sunday Brunch from Pine Beach Bar, located within the InterContinental Phuket Resort, is a feast for the senses, with perfectly executed cuisine inspired from Thailand and the Western world.

THE GUIDE PHUKET | March 2021
Each diner can then select two main dishes from the menu; we chose the Catch of the Day, a steamed sea bass with Thai sauces and lemon, the classic Pad Thai Goong, with fresh Andaman prawns, chives, bean sprout, tofu, and shallots, a stunning Wagyu Beef Burger, served with chunky fries, and the Unagi Don, a Japanese delicacy made with sea eel, Teriyaki, pickled ginger, Kochihikari rice, and Sansho pepper.
The Sunday Brunch at Pine Beach Bar is a one-of-a-kind dining offer The Guide Phuket had the pleasure to try a few weeks ago. The venue successfully manages to capture the beach vibe, with the white, powdery sand of Kamala Beach located just a few steps away. You can choose to enjoy your brunch al fresco, on their large terrace, or within the comfort of their air-conditioned restaurant.
Following the appetizers, we were served a succulent Lobster House Made Pasta with Canadian lobster chunks, organic grown cherry’s tomatoes, passata sauce, a richer version of your traditional tomato sauce offering the perfect blend with the lobster.
In between two bites of your main dishes, you are encouraged to try their free-flow of homemade, wood oven-baked pizzas. We went ahead and ordered the Truffle Pizza with mozzarella, dry porcini, black truffle paste, parmesan, and truffle, and the Bresaola Pizza, made with fresh tomato sauce, Fior di latte, bresaola, parmesan, local rocket, and extra virgin olive oil.
For starters, a selection of six delicate appetizers will be served to be shared with your table. We really enjoyed the Organic Truffle Poached Egg, served with truffle hollandaise and aged parmesan cheese, and their signature Som Tum, which comes complete with sea grapes, long bean, and Phuket dried shrimps. The pizzas were so good that we decided to continue our journey with a special dessert: the Nutella Pizza, large enough to be shared with your friends or family. The brunch is available every Sunday from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm and gives you access to the swimming pool of the resort. Priced at THB 1,900++ per person, you will enjoy half a bottle of Champagne in addition to your food. Early bird offers are available should you book at least three days in advance, reducing the price to THB 1,650++ per person. Pine Beach Bar is located within the InterContinental Phuket Resort on 333 Moo 3, Kamala Beach. SIRAY BAY
HIDDEN GEM AT HAD PLEUM SUK
If you ask the locals about Had Pleum Suk Restaurant, they would most likely recognize the place immediately and would tell you they had been there since their childhood with their family. This local eatery may not be very famous among tourists (both Thai and international) and expats but for the natives of Phuket, it is somewhat of an institution. Located on the beach front of Phuket’s east coast, Had Pleum Suk offers a serene view and peaceful vibe as the beach is quite untouched. Fresh ingredients are at the core of their business. The seafood is bought from fishermen from the Siray Bay area daily and red meat dishes are marinated fresh every day, too. During our recent visit, we tried some of their star dishes, including the Gaeng Som Pla Krapong [Gaeng Som with Sea Bass] – The fish is impressively fresh making the texture perfect with the curry. The paste they use to cook Gaeng Som is rich and tasteful making the curry so delicious. Pla Meug Kai Neung Manao [Steam Squid with Spicy Chili and Lime Sauce] – This is another favorite of ours. The freshly-caught squid comes with yummy eggs inside steamed with their spicy and sour sauce. The aroma of fresh chili and lime makes this menu so outstanding. Ko Moo Yang [Grilled Pork Neck] – The tender pork neck is marinated so well and made fresh every day at the restaurant. Pairing it with the spicy Jaew sauce with the scent of roasted rice is perfect! Finally, the Pu Tod Kratiam [Crab Stir-fried with Garlic] – The sweetness of the fresh crab meat can be tasted through every bite. The simple recipe with crispy garlic and chili makes the fresh crab shines very beautifully. Had Pleum Suk is located on Thepprathan Road, in Siray Bay, and is open daily from 10:30 am to 8:00 pm. For more information and bookings, please call +66 81 891 7858 as advance reservations are more than recommended.

STEM CELLS TO HELP YOUR BODY REJUVENATES Did you know that stem cells are the building blocks of the human body? They are different and special for two reasons. First, they can develop into specialised cells (liver cell, heart cell, bone cell), and second they can replace old or damaged cells. Think of a stem cell like computer code; they can be programmed to make an app on your phone or repair old code that is broken or no longer works.
younger by replenishing your body with new and healthy cells.
How can stem cells help you? Stem cell therapy is used around the world to treat a wide range of conditions, but simply put stem cell therapy heals the body by rejuvenating, repairing and regenerating cells. So what does this mean?
As we age our body cannot supply new cells fast enough to replace the old cells. When that happens we age and become susceptible to disease. Stem cell therapy is like a turbo booster to the system; it enables your body to produce cells faster and in higher volumes.

diabetes, osteoarthritis, chronic back pain and inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma and bronchitis, as well as strengthen body immunity and improve fertility. In the sporting world, regenerative medicine can aid in the treatment of sports injuries through faster healing, reduced injury inflammation and the regeneration of injured tissue for endurance enhancement and lengthening professional careers. However, stem cell therapy is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ treatment and requires deep understanding of the science and its application. This is why stem cell therapy is considered as ‘personalised medicine’ since each treatment is unique to the individual.

Visiting a hospital in Thailand While we certainly hope you won’t have to visit a hospital while you are staying in Thailand, rest assured that the quality of treatments you would receive in private hospitals in Phuket and Thailand, in general, are on par with what you could be expected in the West, if not better. After all, Thailand is a big player in the medical tourism industry, and for good reasons; most doctors have international experience, translators are readily available if needed, and of course, the costs of treatments are much cheaper than what you would be asked to pay in other countries.
