Getting to Know

Nick Seaver CEO of Thanyapura

H

arvard graduate Nick Seaver brought a unique background in business and social entrepreneurship to leading Phuket’s Thanyapura. He had a distinguished career at privateequity firm JP Morgan and was instrumental in managing their US$ 13 billion investment portfolio. He also dedicated significant time to social entrepreneurship, including working with Nobel Prize winner Al Gore on climatechange related endeavors and participated in groundbreaking research on the benefits of sustained meditation practice.

www.theguidephuket.com

Can you briefly outline what Thanyapura is all about? Thanyapura is located in an area of natural beauty amidst the foothills of a national park in Phuket’s north-east. It comprises three centers - Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club, Phuket International Academy Day School and Thanyapura Mind Centre. It offers a state of the art, sustainable facility that focuses on education, sports, arts and wellness for the enjoyment of the local Phuket community and for visitors from around the world. We are also building two boutique hotels - the 77 room upscale Thanyapura Resort and the 38 room mid-market Thanyapura Retreat. In addition we also have the Thanyamundra Organic Resort situated adjacent to Khao Sok national park which has an organic farm and yoga retreat facility. How and why did you become involved with Thanyapura? I worked initially in private equity, investing in and working to build companies, which was a fantastic business experience. Over time, it became clear to me that my aspirations lay elsewhere. I grew more and more involved with social entrepreneurs – individuals who took hard business skills and applied them to social problems. Then I met Klaus Hebben the founder of this extraordinary Thanyapura enterprise and experienced a true meeting of minds. I saw in Thanyapura a way to apply my business and entrepreneurial experience towards a very innovative “triple bottom line” enterprise, one that helps people of all ages improve body, heart and mind, and so I accepted the position of CEO.

have the Sports and Leisure Center which is attracting top level teams from around the world and local residents of Phuket alike into its programs. The sports facilities and coaching are Olympic-class and the facilities are built on an all-weather basis. We are creating a “one-stop-shop” for athletes that includes great coaching, nutrition, a physio clinic, mental training and more. We also seek to foster creativity in the arts as part of our balanced approach. Phuket International Academy Day School is pioneering an expanded International Baccalaureate teaching program combined with evidence-based programs for developing Emotional Intelligence. Our Mind Centre is chaired by an internationally-renowned scholar and teacher, Dr. Alan Wallace. The Centre’s programming is being built up this year and will conduct meditation and psychology-related retreats, conferences, corporate leadership training programs and sports mindfulness programs for athletes. We see the Centre becoming a clearinghouse in the region for these cutting-edge programs. And of course, the teachings at Centre support the work of the school. With the opening of our 77-room resort in the fall 2012, we will have 115 rooms on campus and we have DiVine organic restaurant which uses produce from our organic farm at Thanayamundra near Khao Sok national park.

How do you balance the business and philosophical goals of Thanyapura? The school itself is a not-for-profit entity and the other entities are for profit. The key is to balance this drive for profitability with our objectives of being good for the What do the various component parts of individual, society and the environment. I don’t see them as being opposed. UltiThanyapura aim to achieve? Overall Thanyapura seeks to “awaken mately, they are aligned. Songkran: The Original New Year Phuket celebrates the original Thai New Year with much of the same elan as the rest of the country. Water is a key element in the festival. Most noticeable to the casual visitor are the water fights.

T

raditionally, there was only one ‘New Year’ in Thailand. Songkran, the start of the Buddhist year, is still celebrated between the 13th - 15th April, at the height of the hot season. Translated literally as “the passing of”, Songkran marks the beginning of the solar calendar, when the sun passes from the sign of Taurus into Aries. In the rural community - and until recently Thailand was almost entirely an agricultural society - this has been a perfect time to take a break from the business of earning a living. The rice harvest is in, and replanting has to await the coming of the rains. For centuries, this has presented an opportunity for young men and women to meet socially,

turning the lull in the seasonal cycle of labour to matters of courtship. It is a time of joy, and Thais have long marked the occasion by making merit - by offering food to monks and by releasing caged birds, turtles, and fish. The latter custom had its origins where villagers would collect fish stranded in the pools left as the ponds and canals dried up in the searing heat, saving them till Songkran for release into the river. Not only was this a means of making merit, it served as an effective conservationist programme. You still see vendors offering these creatures for release in many parts of Bangkok as well as in rural areas, pyramids of tiny wooden cages filled with twittering birds, metal tanks swimming with turtles, eels, and fish. Water is a key element in the festival. Buddha images, both public and private, are washed with lustral water, while the whole house is given an especially thorough cleaning. The idea seems to be to start the New Year fresh and clean both in body and spirit. Most noticeable to the casual visitor are the water fights. Thais and foreigners alike spend the days dousing each other (and any

unlucky bystanders) with water - a fine and refreshing experience, given the prevailing weather. The custom of throwing water is probably in part only an exuberant spillover of the tradition of pouring lustral water over the hands of monks and respected elders. More basically, however, the return of water to the parched soil is an expression of hope and anticipation, an invitation to the cooling, life-giving rainy season to come. This practice migrated long ago to Thailand from India by way of Burma. It thus came first to Chiang Mai, where it is still practiced with special enthusiasm. In those early days, there was little communication, no easy links between Chiang Mai and Bangkok, and the water-throwing took a long time to reach the capital. When it did, though, it was embraced with such

abandon that the police officially had to ban it as a traffic hazard. The prohibition has never really taken hold and today if you ride a Bangkok bus during Songkran you must still be prepared for a drenching. Along the streets you find gleeful knots of people heaving buckets of water at any passing vehicle. If you’re driv-

ing, keep your windows closed. If you’re on foot you may get ambushed by a careening tuk-tuk jammed full of young revellers armed with pails of water. It’s all in the spirit of good fellowship and people are pleased to receive as good as they give out. Have fun! Story by CP

The most famous beach on the island is the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colorful and lively mix that typifies a Thai tourist beach town.

ON The Island

t’s a big island, offering all manner of things to do. It’s surprising that so many holiday makers, who are trying to get away from it all, soon get bored with that dreamy combination of a perfect beach, a comfortable hotel room and great food. After a few days, most people want more. They want to go places, to see how the local people live and to experience new things. Happily, with Phuket being a large island, about 50 kilometres long, there are all sorts of interesting things to do here. Below we offer some suggestions.

Phuket Town

Phuket Town is small but incredibly interesting, a potpourri of different cultural influences, of markets and shopping centres, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. Anyone spending a few days on Phuket Island should take time to visit, be it for sight-seeing, cultural or historical interest, or shopping. should show respect in keeping well dressed and remaining quiet, Mum and Dad; keep the kids on a leash and always be culturally sensitive.

Elephant Trekking

The wild elephant population of Phuket was wiped out last century, but has been replaced in recent years by an influx of animals for the tourist trade. Today there remains just a few hundred elephants on Phuket Island, all domesticated, most working in tourism.

Patong Beach

Crowded Beach, Quiet Beach - Find the one that suits you

Spend most of your holiday in Patong and you might think the beaches of Phuket are crowded. While Patong buzzes with people and activity, there are many other beaches to which one can escape in complete solitude. You just have to drive. As one moves away from Patong the beaches become progressively quieter. www.theguidephuket.com

By the time you get to the top of the island you’re guaranteed kilometres of sand to yourself, even in peak season, so remember crowded beach, quiet beach; the choice is there.

Visiting Wats – Buddhist Monasteries

All Buddhist Monasteries are open to the public during the day, and visitors are usually welcome. Since these are active holy places of worship, and the residence of monks, visitors

Zoo

Phuket’s only zoo is small, but pleasant, displaying some of Thailand’s almost vanished wildlife. Their tigers are fed well enough that one can sit with them and have a photo taken. We recommend going early or late, to avoid the tour buses that arrive mid morning and mid afternoon. It is in a small road off the east side of Chao Fah Road, about half way between the town and Chalong’s 5-way intersection. The turnoff is well signposted and easy to find.

Indeed, riding an elephant is an experience not to be missed. The lumbering monsters are incredibly agile. Taking an elephant ride helps to keep the beasts employed, fed and out of the cities, where many can be

top with a big rubber band around your ankles and fight the internal struggle that every jumper meets when standing 54 metres above the ground. Logic might tell us it is quite safe, but another part of our body screams “No! Don’t jump!” But with their friends at the bottom, waiting expectantly, most people manage to throw themselves off and experience a rush like no other.

Cultural Village

Cultural shows featuring skilled Thai dancers from the different regions of the country, martial arts demonstrations, elephant rides and Thai dinners are all brought together at Phuket’s original cultural garden; there is also an attached orchid farm for all the budding botanists out there.

Sukko Spa

Spas; massage and herbal steam rooms

Health resorts, spas and herbal saunas are proliferating, and some fine examples offering a wide range of treatments are now found on Phuket. Thailand has its own traditional herbal saunas, and there are several local ones around the island. While many large resorts now feel they are incomplete without a spa, there are also several independent establishments.

View Points

Phuket’s most famous view point, Laem Phrom Thep at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor to the island. Thus it attracts a fleet of tour buses and cars each evening as people come to witness the sun fall

into the Andaman Sea. Indeed, it’s often a spectacular sight, but there are many quieter places. The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people and when the heavens turn red, the view from any of the beaches can also be spectacular.

Jungle Trekking

With most of the rainforest on Phuket long since eaten up by rubber plantations, it is not so easy to find ideal trekking grounds. Again, it’s best to sign on with a company providing this service. Often they take their trekkers right off Phuket into neighbouring Phang Nga province, where some beautiful areas of forest remain.

bus-and-boat tours to Phang Nga Bay are all deposited on this island where they are besieged by trinket vendors. The day boat tours generally just pass by this islet, giving tourists only the quick glimpse that it deserves, so that they can spend their time amongst the more spectacular parts of the bay.

A visit to Phang Nga Bay on the east side of Phuket is the one big ‘musts’ for visitor to this region. Indeed, the village is fascinating, but again it’s best if you can take a boat tour that avoids the midday crowds. And just for the record, there are no ‘Sea Gypsies’ in this misnamed village. The people here are all in fact James Bond Island Muslim fishermen. This strange but over-rated rock was featured in the James Island Getaways Bond film The Man with the Getting to some of the many Golden Gun and has never had little resorts on remote islands a quiet day since. Stop Worrying and Learn to Love Patong

he Patong Bay area of Phuket conjures up images of heaving beer bars, strutting ladyboys, souvenir stalls by the hundred and myriad tailors who can sell you a low priced suit in nine different languages. The island’s most famous tourist area can be compared to a beauty queen with smudged makeup, but beware the handcuffs she carries in her purse. She’ll make your dreams come true and then leave you broke, hung over, exhausted and grinning from ear to ear the morning after. Patong is a massive cross-section of humanity and for avid people-watchers it’s better than cable TV and certainly a lot more real than Facebook.

Hanging Your Hat in Patong

Patong has so many accommodation options that it’s hard to choose the best for your own needs. Obviously budget is a factor, but the incredible range of competition actually keeps prices pretty reasonable. The super-chic and funky B-Lay Tong Phuket, MGallery Patong Beach at the “quieter” northern end of Beach Road overlooking its own beach area is the choice of the trendy young couples and gay set who love the crazy décor, laid back ambience and huge transparent swimming pool and pool-bar. The Patong Resort Hotel is another iconic residential choice comprising 111 Deluxe rooms, 11 Super Deluxe rooms, 10 Executive rooms and 2 Grand Suites, some overlooking Patong Bay and situated in an elegant high-rise building with the main lobby hall designed and decorated in Phuket’s famous Chino-Portuguese architecture. In addition, there are 92 deluxe rooms in the new wing set in the lush tropical gardens and modern low-rise buildings. Standard rooms are also located in the greenery area, offering more budget pricing in low-rise buildings. All 325 rooms are equipped with the latest modern facilities and the restaurants, bars and huge swimming pool are all Patong favorites. Patong Merlin Hotel is a terrific international holiday resort situated in huge verdant grounds running from Beach Road to Rat-U-Thid Road at the southern end of Patong. Nestled amongst acres of swaying coconut palms and flowering gardens, the Merlin weaves its way around three beautiful aquamarine sculptured swimming pools in a labyrinth of curved walkways and meandering paths. There is easy access to the sparkling sandy beach and quaint street markets and the enchanting ambience and smiling attentive staff ensure a visit that is both memorable and magical.

Great Bars and People Watching

Find a good vantage point such as the Margarita Live Music Club and Bar on the corner of Soi Bangla and Rat-U-Thid Road, or their newly-opened sister restaurant and nightclub Summer Wind on the Rat-U-Thid corner of the new Pomenade Walking Street and play “Spot the Ladyboy” or observe the punters and vendors haggling to the very last satang over a Singha Beer T shirt. The recently-opened Jungceylon Shopping and Entertainment Center has a huge array of restaurants and bars and one of the very best is the Full Moon Brew Work Microbrewery & Restaurant behind the big ship. Here’s a unique small batch craft brewery making all sorts of unusual beers form unique Thai ingredients. There’s nowhere else like it on the island, plus the food and ambience make it a terrific place for a night out. As night falls across Patong the entire range of human emotion is on display, from the wide-eyed joy of an American sailor on his first shore leave, to the poignant sadness of a ladyboy weeping like a jilted prom queen as he/she staggers home at 4am.

Patong Area Dining

If you want to experience some of Phuket’s very best dining the restaurants throughout the Patong area offer a wonderful choice. If you head north to Kalim Beach you’ll discover the immensely stylist White Box Restaurant in its eponymous white house situated right on the beach. Fabulous Mediterranean cuisine and a fine wine cellar complement sensational views over Patong Bay and the Andaman Sea. They also have an elegant upstairs cocktail bar with

White Box Restaurant are currently running a daily promotion of 990 baht a head three-course dinner, or a 990 baht net a head for as much tapas as you wish plus half a bottle of wine per guest. Venture a little further north and you’ll discover the futuristic steel and glass-walled towers of IndoChine Phuket leaping improbably up the steepest of hillsides. The stylish lounges, bars and rooftop restaurant of this super-groovy resort serve some of Phuket’s finest cuisine from the Indochinese countries and their Sunday brunch and rave party nights are legendary! For fabulous on-the-beach dining there’s no better place than the lovely Sala Bua Restaurant of Impiana Resort, Patong where Chef Dirk Schroeter’s kitchen produces fabulous Thai and international dishes all replete with the freshest and healthiest ingredients, in a beautiful beachside environment and all at affordable prices. Here are some of the Impiana’s current promotions: Sala Bua Restaurant* Songkran Festival – Thai New Year Celebration Gala Buffet Dinner on Friday 13 April 2012 Come and enjoy the most fun, biggest and wettest festival of Thailand, “Songkran 2012”. Savoey Seafood Restaurant has been famous since opening in 1980 for their super-fresh daily seafood catches plus Thai dancing and cultural shows. Our favorite option is to sit at the little outdoor bar right on Beach Road near the northern corner with Soi Bangla at sunset with a cool beer and watch the world go by, then select a fresh Red Snapper from the vast array of seafood on display and enjoy a sumptuous dinner with a bottle of crisp white wine at one of Savoey’s outdoor tables…..paradise!

Shop ‘til you Drop, Flop or Bop!

If shopping is your thing then Patong is the right place. The line between browsing and just walking down the street is extremely blurred in Patong as the sidewalks are crowded with vendors selling souvenirs, T shirts, DVDs and a myriad of other bric a brac. Ocean Shopping Plaza on Bangla Road is the place to find mobile phones and accessories, along with a number of clothing shops. Jungceylon is a sprawling shopper’s delight with every variety of store, plus endless restaurants and bars, an entire cinema and entertainment complex and loads of parking downstairs if you need it. The newly-opened Promenade Walking Street also boasts many stellar Phuket names in their exciting new venture. At the Bangla end of the Promenade there’s the Tiger Group who have opened a huge new complex of beer bars, Thai boxing, a live music venue and a new ‘even bigger’ disco which will be the talk of the island. Seduction Group and The Factory are also opening new clubs and the amazing venture from Las Vegas the Danze Fantasy ‘Genesis’ illusion and magic show is pulling in the crowds.

After all that fun and nightlife, not to mention days spent sunbathing at the beach and Patong’s abundant great food and drink, it’s sometimes really wonderful just to kick back and relax with a healthy invigorating visit to a wellness spa or massage retreat. Two of the very best on offer in Patong are:

5 Star Massage & Beauty Salon in Patong Beach is a unique, elegant, modern and comfortable salon where the very well-trained staff offers a complete range of massage and beauty treatment services all at reasonable prices. Pastel murals and the sound of soft music create a warm and relaxing welcome. 5 Star Massage is French owned and managed by the lovely Isabelle and all the massage girls are certified from massage school in Thailand and only offer authentic massage services that leave you refreshed, revitalized and rejuvenated. RarinJinda Wellness & Spa Phuket I have just discovered a small piece of Heaven in Phuket – and I cannot wait to return there. In the heart of Patong is the beautiful and serene RarinJinda Wellness Spa and it should be on the ‘must visit’ list for residents and visitors alike. Superb décor and stunning and unique flower decorations greet you at this very impressive location and Spa Manager Khun Oui, with her efficient staff, extends a warm welcome to all.

Lifestyle / 27

RarinJinda arrived in Phuket in February 2011 but brought with it over 14 years of development experience from its innovative owners. First launching the popular “Let’s Relax” Spa brand (which now has 5 branches throughout Thailand), the owners added the luxurious ‘RarinJinda” concept more than six years ago in Chiang Mai and have since added two more of these wonderful wellness spas, in Bangkok as well as Phuket. RarinJinda is already the recipient of many awards for its superlative services and innovative techniques and it is easy to see why. The perfect place for a rejuvenating break from life’s stresses and definitely very addictive!

I Love the Nightlife

Shopping and dining are all well and good, but what makes Patong famous is its unforgettable nightlife. When darkness falls Patong resembles an anthill that’s been run over by a cavalry charge. Or, at least it would if ants could drink beer, sing loudly and had iPhones. The bars, discos and restaurants light up the night and the musical cacophony is relentless. Don’t try to figure out what’s going on just let the endless energy of Patong’s thousands of party goers pull you in. You may not remember exactly what happened the next morning, but somehow you’ll never forget it either.

he worldwide economy may be in meltdown but there is undoubtedly more than enough wealth around to fuel the expanding Indian wedding market. From magical private islands to 5-star resorts with headline recording artists providing the party entertainment, these events have to be seen to be believed. Up to five days of amazing themed parties and unique adventures lead up to a lavish celebration of the magnificent wedding day, where all the traditional rites are followed in rare style. So who can plan and deliver such a feast to delight all the senses? One name stands out above all the rest in his field and commands the respect of both clients and associates through his ability to deliver real excellence, every time. Khun Kritidech Srabua (also affectionately known as Khun Worapot until his spiritual advisor counseled that Kritidech was a name more suited to him) heads up the highly successful Oriental Events Company and also the Oriental Leisure Company, that arranges 5-star individual ‘tailor-

made’ tours and DMC services throughout South East Asia. He happily responds to both names, however, and is definitely the ‘go to’ man for all your event and party planning! From corporate conferences of over 1,500 people to themed adventures to lavish weddings, every event is individually styled and an unforgettable experience. It is little wonder that his clients keep coming back for more! He arranges major events all over Thailand and has also been called on to manage conference, incentive and team building trips in Vietnam, Hong Kong, Bali, Singapore and Cambodia for the important MICE market.

he word Vset is translated as ‘extraordinary’ in Thai and the restaurant of that name is something of a hidden gem at the beachside end of what is often jokingly referred to as “Chalong High Street”. It is on the road running from the Chalong Turning Circle to the pier…. a warren of bric-a-brac bars, neon-lit night Sirens calling to lonesome foreigners and an endless daily caravan of large mini-vans disgorging excited tourists at the pier to start their sightseeing, fishing and dive trips. Vset then is aptly named… for it is extraordinary, being one of Phuket’s finest restaurants with a delightful ambience and décor to match, sitting benignly amidst all the surrounding chaos. It is the sister restaurant with the same owners to Kan Eang, which is undoubtedly a Phuket icon for its great seafood and Vset shares the extensive parking facilities and abuts with its famous sister. Walking into the extraordinary Vset restaurant is like entering a glass house full of intriguing collectibles, with abundant soft wood and floor-to-ceiling mirrors and

a large state-of-the-art open kitchen at the center of the action. But this first dining room is in fact only a third of Vset’s total space, for it has recently opened its second dining room and a separating walk-through wine cellar with a fine array of bottles set upon wooden shelving. The available dining space has pretty much doubled since the Grand Opening of this second section in mid February and can now accommodate up to 65 diners. They are seated amidst the stylish modernity of the design and décor and the style of food seems to perfectly complement this environment. During the day abundant light pours through the glass windows, but at night candle-flicker is reflected from a hundred gleaming surfaces creating an enticing mosaic of elegance and romance. The cocktail list is replete and alluring and so we fell upon it with abandon and enjoyed sitting calmly in Vset’s gloriously relaxing space, sipping Mai Tai’s and Black Russians and wondering what craziness was unfolding on the “extraordinary” nighttime soi outside.

The wine list arrived and we spent a happy period tripping though its excellent offerings of classic European and exciting New World wines and then being unable to decide what in fact we should drink. “Hmmmm…should it be a top of the range Chateau Vieux Coutelin, or one of New Zealand’s cold climate Pinot Noirs from the South Island?” My girlfriend quickly came to the rescue (as she is wont to do) declaring that it would be a carbonated Italian Rose Prosecco from the section of the wine list playfully dubbed “bubbleicious”….. and that was that! And so to the food. Vset is overseen by Ronnie Macuja from the Philippines who has over ten years ex-

perience as one Phuket’s most celebrated and awarded chefs. He is as charming and helpful as he is creative and we were happy to be guided by his helpful indicators incorporated into the menu showing which of his dishes had received international recognition. The menu is clearly expressed and ranges perfectly through fresh seafood, healthy organic salads, enticing soups and delicious pastas to a very complete selection of different cuts of meats and steaks. But do leave some tummy space for one of Chef Ronnie’s sensational desserts as you will want to linger long into the evening in this lovely romantic spot.

is so much wonderful cuisine on offer at so many enticingly different food stations that it is imperative that you have a well thought-out STR-AT-EGY! Master Chef Bryan Burger who oversees the selection and preparation of the cuisine on offer is at great pains to ensure the utmost freshness and healthfulness of all the ingredients and organic sourcing is very much the order of the day. Brunch starts with a welcoming flute of sparkling wine and orange juice so you can appraise where you will dive into the cornucopia of great food on offer. A good place to start, as we did, is with succulent fresh salmon steaks accompanied by piles of health-giving salad ingredients, with abundant nuts and fruits and a virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. We then attacked the BBQ seafood section where the chef will cook to your liking a delicious selection of fish, crab, lobster and even a little chicken or steak to go with it if you wish. All this was washed down with a light crisp wine, in our case a Chilean Rose, but cold

lashings of sauvignon blanc and chardonnay were also flowing freely around us. The conversation flowed and laughter blended into the clink of cutlery and wine glasses as we wondered what the poor folk were doing under their beach umbrellas down on the beach below us. All did seem to be extremely right in the world and so in celebration we decided to load up with a selection of desserts such as nut tarts and raw food chocolate slices and passion fruit mousse. All of this was so healthy and light that we still had a little tummy space in reserve for the excellent selection of cheeses with nutty bread, fruits and crackers. By the time that 3pm rolled around we were feeling exceedingly HA-PP-Y and CON-TE-NT thanks to the joys of RE-KATA! Enjoy RE-KA-TA Sunday brunch from 10 am till 3 pm for 1,200 baht per head for food only, or 1,500 baht per head including one bottle of wine per couple, plus tax and service charge. Meet the Three Sommeliers of th

the 9 Floor Restaurant elegance in a wine bottle.

T

he 9th Floor is one of Phuket’s most elegant gourmet restaurants and they take great pride in providing their huge number of local and international customers with the best in food, wine and service. It is a sort of temple celebrating the very finest things in life and yet the 9th Floor is situated on the top floor of a rather unimpressive condominium building just off Rat-U-Thid Road in Patong. Ascending in the elevator, many first time visitors must have thought to themselves: “This can’t be the right place!” But when the elevator doors slide open it’s like entering a parallel universe of elegance, style, wonderful views over Patong and the Andaman Sea, fabulous food and wine and….. beautiful waitresses in alluring black mini-skirts who are offering you an inviting “Wai” of Thai greeting. The 9th Floor is always at the forefront of innovation and as they are totally dedicated to raising their service standards it is not a surprise that three of their lovely waitresses have recently graduated with flying colors to become Phuket’s first female, Thai Sommeliers – or experts in all things to do with fine wines. We were lucky enough to catch up with them for a chat at the 9th Floor one evening. Let us introduce them to you.……

Wannaporn Naokhamphang (Tucky), Aphirati Tantiphalanon (Boom) and Jariyaporn Kemtong (Ja)

So, first of all where do you come from? How old are you and what is your background? Tucky: I was born in Roy Et and I am 29 and came to Phuket to go to vocational college. I spent two years in accountancy and working as a waitress before I joined the 9th Floor three years ago. Boom: I am 26 and come from Songkla and studied at Rajaphat University. I worked in hotels and restaurants to help support myself while I studied and I joined the 9th Floor a year ago. Ja: I come from Trang not too far away and I am 29. I came to Phuket to study the hotel business. When I graduated I came to the 9th Floor to work four years ago. What is the best part of your job as a waitress and sommelier? (All laugh and answer together): Making our customers happy. Boom: When I recommend the right things and I see a smile on my customer’s face that makes me very happy. Tucky: I enjoy the look on my customer’s faces when I serve them a dish that they love. Ja: I particularly like helping customers choose the right wine to go with their meals. How did you get your qualifications as a sommelier? Tucky: We trained with Mister Steven Roberto who is well known as a former Californian wine maker and hotelier. Ja: The course was 60 hours of training in the basic principles of wine classification,

www.theguidephuket.com

styles and all other aspects of wine including the role of wine in fine dining and how to present wines at the dinner table. Boom: We had to pass a written examination covering classifications of wines, origins of wines, wine styles, food and wine pairings and solving wine recommendation problems. So, what is your favorite wine? Ja: Red wines particularly Shiraz from the New World mainly Australia. They are a bit fruity and powerful. Tucky: Red wine, such as Amarone Allegrini from Italy because I like strongly alcoholic wines. Boon: Same! Amarone because of its aroma and strong taste. What do you do in your spare time and to relax? Boom: Hang out with my friends and at home. Tucky: Watch movies, go shopping, or listen to live music. I like the Irish pubs in Patong where they have live bands playing. Ja: I like to go on Facebook and check the news on my computer. Come and savor the 9th Floor’s fabulous wines and dining and meet their three beautiful sommeliers for yourself! Spa Sensations

A holiday wouldn’t be a real holiday without a little pampering, and when it comes to pampering Phuket has a lot to offer. A massage - even a simple one on the beach - is a luxury in itself, but if you really want to indulge then you need to sift through the myriad of options available. Phuket spas offer everything from facials to body wraps and scrubs, not to mention extravagant spa packages that will leave you in a state of euphoria.

M

ost of the big resorts on Phuket have spas attached and almost all provide not only straight forward massages, but also whole body treatments that often include a herbal steam, foot bath, head massages, body wraps and scrubs.

A Body Beautiful

Body scrubs are generally very food orientated and may leave you hungrier than before you started. From various fruit cocktails – mango, papaya and pineapple to name a few – to coffee, yoghurt and even chocolate, the smells alone are enough to have you salivating with pleasure.

Health & Beauty / 45

Body wraps seem to include more earthy ingredients, from Dead Sea mud to clay, licorice and tamarind. Wraps help to detoxify your skin, boost circulation and revitalize skin tissue, leaving you with softer and more hydrated skin afterwards; an ideal tonic for the harsh drying effects of the salt water and searing sun. For women, many treatments go beyond skin supplements. What about a breast firming treatment for example? If you’re worried that your breasts seem to be making their way slowly but surely towards your knees, concern yourself no more. This treatment lifts saggy breasts and firms the muscles, leaving you perky and without the need of a wonder bra, for a few hours at least. Facials are another pleasure that can be enjoyed as part of a package or on their own. Facials are often chosen to complement your type of skin or particular needs. For example, most spas offer a sun burn relief facial, which is very popular on Phuket. Antiwrinkle, oil-control and hydrating facials are also common. Again, facials tend to come with soothing ingredients like lemongrass or cucumber. If you have sensitive skin it is a good idea to tell the therapist before treatment takes place as some ingredients are too strong for certain skin types. Perhaps the ultimate in luxury is a gold facial treatment. The Queen of the Ching Dynasty apparently used a gold massage roller on her face every day and if it was good enough for her it must be good enough for us mere mortals too.

Spoilt for choice

Half the fun when treating oneself to an indulgent spa package is in choosing between them. They tend to have exotic names such as ‘sensuous moonlight’ or ‘indulgent oasis’ and the most difficult part is deciding between that extra foot massage, or using the steam room. Most spa resorts provide sumptuous surroundings, whether by the beach or in the cool of the mountains. Lush gardens, tinkling water features and comfortable salas will make you feel a million dollars in no time. No harsh chattering voices infiltrate the calm atmosphere and the only sound you hear is the wind whispering in the coconut palms or softly piped traditional Thai music. Like any true indulgence, spa packages cost money. They will often be at least the price of a night of accommodation in a mid-range resort. However, they are still good value when compared to the price of similar services in the West, and in Thailand, spa treatments offer that extra ‘feel good factor’ that every vacation needs. www.facebook.com/theguidephuket

Enjoy a real 5-Star Service!

All-in-all three very good reasons to get over to the tender ministrations of Isabelle and her expert therapists for a complete body ‘tune up’.

ust a short walk from Jungceylon and opposite the Holiday Inn in Patong are probably the best ‘value for money’ body treatments available on Phuket Island, at the stylish 5-Star Massage and Beauty Salon. Under French management by the lovely Isabelle the salon operates to very high standards and uses only the best quality natural Thai oils and lotions. A whole range of massage therapies are on offer as well as hair and facial treatments, manicures and pedicures. It is Isabelle’s strict policy not to offer a service until she is completely sure

The Art of Relaxation

that her product is the best on the market and her staff is well-trained and proficient in the procedure. It was great to see then that three new treatments have been added to the extensive salon menu and we recently took the opportunity to check out these new offers. The first treatment we tried was the ear candling and it was indeed a surprisingly pleasant experience. Ear Candling is an ancient healing method, originating in Egypt around 2,500 BC and still widely used today at alternative medicine clinics and holistic centers around the world. Ear candling requires the use of special candles, which are made of cotton or linen that is wound into a candle shape, soaked in wax, and then allowed to harden. It is a method of removing excess ear wax and debris and it really is completely safe and painless. Whilst you lie on your side the hollow candle is placed into the external ear canal and the candle is lit at the opposite end. Warm air and smoke from the burning candle dries out the ear canal and stimulates the body’s natural excretion of wax and dead cells, pollen, mold, parasites and other debris. After the procedure, a dark,

waxy substance is usually left in the hollow candle, which is a combination of the unwanted ear wax and debris, but the final result is that your ears are squeaky clean! Next on our ‘to do’ list was a slimming treatment that employs a full body, Lymphatic Drainage Massage to achieve its ends. This is a highly specialized therapy using organic oils blended with essential oils. It aids detoxification and reduces water retention using unique gentle pumping techniques to drain trapped toxins through the body’s lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a complex network of vessels and ducts that move fluid throughout the body and is responsible for moving toxins away from healthy cells and carrying germfighting materials to cells when they are under attack by viruses. Though fluid moves through the lymphatic system, it does not have its own pumping mechanism. Lymphatic drainage is a type of therapy that primarily focuses on specific lymph nodes and points of the body and is intended to reduce blockages of the lymphatic system, which in turn promotes a healthier body. It is a really relaxing way to get healthy and a perfect way to spend an hour as often as

you can. Last on our list of new treatments was the Sports or Deep Tissue Massage. Developed only in recent years, the sport massage is specifically designed for people who are involved in physical activity. But you don’t have to be a professional athlete to have one! It’s also used by people who are active and workout often, or by non-sports people like me who have taken a non-sports tumble. The focus isn’t on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance. This massage is slow and thorough and the therapist begins with superficial strokes to identify any problem areas and detected overused muscles. These muscles are hard and tense compared to the surrounding tissues and this massage helps to relieve any swelling and drain away exhaustion from the body. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments and these adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve

pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. It focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue and is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness and sore shoulders. This is not for the faint hearted though as the massage pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain, however the great news is that you will notice an improved range of motion immediately after the massage. All-in-all three very good reasons to get over to the tender ministrations of Isabelle and her expert therapists for a complete body ‘tune up’. You just know it makes sense!

Thai Silk

Woodcarving

Long one of Thailand’s most Most of this comes from the famous products, silk weaving craft centers of Chiang Mai and is still one of the major crafts in again Thai skills show through many rural areas. The variety of in a great variety of items that materials available in Phuket is wide and varies both in design, from the traditional to modern to plain colors, and quality; 2-ply is thin and light, 3-ply or more becomes heavier and more expensive. Tailors, jewelry and souvenir shops in all areas carry silk. Many shops will tailor modern dresses or shorts from silk at a fraction of the price you would pay back home. can be both novel and creative or entirely traditional. Buddha images are one of the standards, but you can find figurines of all kinds and many other offbeat items for home decoration. Thailand makes some great teak furniture, though only a little is available in Phuket.

Ceramics

The two major centers for ceramic production are the well-known Chiang Mai, and Ratburi west of Bangkok. They produce an amazing range of wares from very traditional Thai and even Chinese tableware and decorative items to modern home decor items, the biggest of which you’ll need a truck to move. Some of these more modern items are creative and interesting. There is a fair range spread around the island, but you’ll have to drive and hunt to find it all.

www.theguidephuket.com

Instant Antiques

This sounds like a contradiction, but this is now a thriving new industry in Thailand that arose in response to the overwhelming demand for beautiful old things and the short supply. Originally, cunning entrepreneurs crafted and carefully ‘aged’ wood, bronze

and stone artworks to sell off as genuine antiques. But they produced such beautiful things that demand grew, and the industry came out into the open. Today whole villages of skilled workers produce beautiful objects of art that appear ancient, but which are sold cheaply as ‘reproductions’. This makes ‘antiques’ available to everyone and takes the pressure off the genuinely old things. Best of all, virtually no-one can tell the difference between the real thing and the reproduction that you place in your home.

Custom Tailoring

This is definitely bargain country in Phuket. Tailors can import their wares easily to Phuket and their overhead costs are low. Skills range from excel-

be required, and those who are a little more finicky should plan on three visits to get things just right. Allow two or three days between each visit. The Guide Phuket recommends: Mister Singh’s Fashion Gallery, Patong Beach, www. fashiongallery.com.

Central Festival Phuket - Phuket Town

With over 120,000 square meters bursting with prime shopping opportunities and world-class products it is easy to see why this consummate one-stop shopping and entertainment complex is so popular amongst Phuket residents and visitors. With a large selection of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, plus a supermarket and cinemas you can enjoy the largest, most complete shopping and entertainment complex in southern Thailand.

Jungceylon Patong Beach

Located centrally in Patong Beach is the newest addition to the growing trend of shopping malls in Phuket. ‘Jungceylon‘ was the old name for Phuket when it was still a prosperous port town and trading in the region was at its peak. This shopping mall retains a lot of the old history of Phuket in its architecture and style and is a joy to visit

for this alone. The choice of goods is world-class, comprising well over 300 shops with ample car parking space, restaurants, bars, cinema and bowling alley along with everything else you could possibly need for a busy day shopping.

Weekend Market - Phuket Town

The Jatujak (or JJ) weekend market in Bangkok is world famous but few people realize that there is an equally good alternative here in Phuket, albeit on a smaller scale. Situated opposite the Naka Temple (which is also worth a visit) outside of Phuket Town, just 5 minutes from Central Festival on the Chao Fa West Road lies Phuket’s equivalent to Bangkok’s JJ Market. Here you will find all manner of things for sale from seemingly useless second-hand household junk and cute little trinkets to garden ornaments, clothing and ideal presents for all your friends and family. There is also an abundance of food and drink stalls to keep the energy levels up whilst you wander around. The market starts in the afternoon and goes on until the evening time when it can get really very lively.

These taxi motor cycle drivers are easily identified by their special colored jackets showing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets.

ow much of Phuket have you actually H seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways.

To and from the airport

Airport transfers are relatively simple. The airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibuses are available to get to the major beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available and are cheaper than the airport limousines, as are ‘private’ taxis but we suggest you avoid these since problems have been known to occur. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National have offices located in the airport.

Airlines in & out of Phuket

A multitude of airlines now run scheduled flights to and from Phuket and during high season chartered flights are also available. Budget airlines such as Air Asia, Nok Air and One-2-Go Air all run convenient and economical flights to other provinces throughout Thailand.

is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colorful with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every major beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise slowly around the streets picking up passengers. Songtaews are slow but cheap with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

‘Tuk-Tuks’

If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck converted in the manner of the bigger song-taews mentioned above to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are fleets of these in all major tourist areas and they will take you anywhere for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can attempt to bargain but don’t expect much movement on their prices and be aware that at night the price of tuk-tuks shoots up. You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself.

Motorcycle Taxis

These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet There are few buses on Phuket and the nerve wracking, way to get around. All main form of transport from beach to town fares must be negotiated before the ride.

Song-taews

www.theguidephuket.com

Renting a Motorcycle

Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but do be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand, with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times and all riders to wear helmets – even though most Thais (including the police!) ignore the regulations. Also motor cycle lights must be turned on at all times, including during the daytime! The police occasionally enforce all these laws, so beware. The real danger in Phuket is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. If you rent one and cause damage you will be held fully responsible, with some greedy owners charging significantly more than the real cost of the damage. Be extremely cautious!

Renting Your Own Car

Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are readily found in every beach area and major rental companies operate in most resorts. When renting private vehicles from the side of the road be aware that few of these vehicles have insurance and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out.
