OUR TOP PICKS
Every month, our team selects for you the top 3 beaches you should visit while staying in Phuket. All of them have their pros and cons, so we try to provide a good mix between the popular ones and the less crowded ones. Kamala Beach: Kamala Beach is a 3-kilometer long stretch of beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast. Essentially a fisherman’s village, Kamala Beach is family-friendly with soft sand and excellent sunsets. Behind the beach, there is a strip of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops in case you forgot anything needed for your holiday. Kata Beach: Known as Phuket’s ‘Surfer’s Paradise’, Kata Beach is one of the most beautiful of all of Phuket’s beaches. It’s a halfmoon crescent of white sand which lines a bay that is cut deep between two green headlands. The water at Kata Beach is crystal clear and there is a small coral reef which is excellent for snorkeling. During the green season, Kata Beach is a great place to learn how to surf due to its rolling waves. Bang Tao Beach: Home to much of Phuket’s 5-star luxury resorts, Bang Tao Beach is a pleasant stretch of beach on the Phuket’s west coast. The northern end of the beach has a small coral reef, which is perfect for snorkeling. As usual, pay close attention to the red flags and warning signs nearby the beach, as rip currents can occur, especially during the monsoon season.
WHAT TO DO WHEN A JELLYFISH STINGS YOU? Let’s face it: this is certainly something you’d prefer to avoid when enjoying a day at the beach, but the Andaman Sea contains its fair share of the translucent animal. Below is a quick recap on the symptoms one can suffer from a sting and the best way to treat someone suffering from it. Remember that you should always call for a lifeguard to assist you should you be in pain after getting out of the water.
SYMPTOMS
WHAT TO DO

The pizza dough is one of the best we have tried in Phuket, with a perfect balance between crust and soft texture, and good use of seasonings, too. In addition, most of the ingredients are flown directly from Italy to guarantee an original taste. While it is difficult to choose a favorite pizza among all they offer, we have a strong secret crush for the Noci, cooked with Blue Cheese, Walnuts, and Speck. Home to Chef Enrico Pulzato, known as Puccio, and his lovely wife Ghirakarn “Kan“ Chotnok, who takes care of the front of the house, the restaurant has grown to become a strong favorite of the many diners that occupy the terrace and the air-conditioned room as soon as the venue opens its door. The secret to its success? Aside from the lovable personalities of the owners, it all comes down to carefully selected ingredients, a passion for cooking Italian food, and a dash of creativity when it Finally, the venue also offers a selection of Secondi Piatti, such as meat and seafood; we found the Chicken Alla Milanese to be a strong winner, alongside their Red Snapper, served with olives, capers, and tomatoes, and your choice of side dishes. You won’t leave the restaurant without trying their homemade desserts, too! Tiramisu, anyone? Open for lunch and dinner, Da Puccio Restaurant is clearly a victim of its popularity, so booking your table in advance does not sound like a bad idea. PHUKETIANS SOLIDARITY TO
THE COVID CRISIS As the world unites to battle one of the largest pandemics of the 21st century, it was only normal for the residents of Phuket to come together and help families in need by organizing several food donations across the island. In Rawai, the restaurant Costa Grill recently donated 200 food boxes to the local community, in partnership with the Rawai municipality, while our unsung hero, Mark, owner of The Islander on Wiset Road, known for their amazing Sunday roasts, have provided hundreds of boxes to help the residents of the subdistrict. At the center of the island, in Kathu, our friends at Thong Dee restaurant organized several donations for the people located in the Bangthong village, while Da Sandro Restaurant partnered with Keemala and The Kee Resort to donate 50 sets of rice to Phuket Field Hospital. The rice, which comes from a project dedicated to supporting local farmers and originated from the Suphan Buri Rice Research Institute, tastes like Jasmine rice but contains 50% less sugar. It was distributed to local communities, including the Wat Kosit community, Koh Maprao community, and a group of foreign workers. In Phuket Town, the team at The Brasserie organized a food donation over a few days where they successfully prepared close to a thousand meals to help the residents of the Ratsada subdistrict. In addition, yours truly, writers and friends of The Guide Phuket, have delivered over a hundred meals at the Ban Kuku sub-district. And there are many more! Hundreds of people, both Thais and foreigners, have offered their help in providing food and basic necessities to the local community. In this article, we salute you, and thank you for all the efforts you guys have pulled through. This rather unique situation should hopefully help the government in place to rethink its strategy when it comes to unemployment in the country, a number that has been relatively low over the last few decades thanks to flourishing industries like tourism. Let me finish by saying that I have never been as proud of my island as today, seeing the involvement of the community and the effort of the government to curb the spread of the virus. We will get through this together, and Phuket will return to its glory soon!

Staying calm at home allows you to keep track of your diet and is a great opportunity to start the fasting diet you have heard so much about. Extra time for beauty can also include more time for face masks. You can start by gently cleaning your face, following by a mild scrub to eliminate the dead epidermis then cover your face with a purify or detox face mask, rinse off and apply more nourishment through a mask sheet before your regular beauty ritual. Even though news about the virus situation is everywhere on your social media feeds, you should take some time off of the screen and relax; once the mind is relaxed, your inner beauty will shine from the inside out.

You will find several restaurants near the sea gypsy market in front of Rawai beach, that serve delicious seafood using several recipes. The gimmick here is that you can select your preferred protein at the market, such as fish, crab, lobster, rock lobster, clam, oyster, prawn or squid/octopus, and then carry the fresh ingredients to the restaurant you like, which will weigh your seafood and suggest the price for cooking. By sitting near the entrance of each restaurant, you will enjoy the stunning view of Rawai beach, especially during sunny weather, when the blue sea Phuket sure is famous for its fresh seafood

GETTING TO KNOW Understand and overcome stress during the crisis – Dr. Patipon Homhual
For the past few months, Phuket, Thailand, and a whole lot of other countries around the world have been facing the COVID-19 crisis, where the population is asked to stay home in confinement and to practice social distancing. stages: mild, moderate, and severe. It will also depend on vulnerability, and the strength of the patient. Some people people are vulnerable and cannot face a crisis.
COVID-19 is considered as a big stressor because it affects the whole world. Everybody experiences it together and it limits everyone’s lifestyle. Most people face a mild form of stress, such as anxiety and irritability, which possibly leads to insomnia. Some experience a higher form of stress, which can lead to depression and anxiety. To medically consider it a disease, we need to evaluate if it affects your daily routine, such as eating, working, and sleeping. In the severe stage, people can be so depressed that they are harmful to themselves or even experience a psychotic disorder. We encountered many cases at the Department of Psychiatry at Patong Hospital during the crisis of COVID-19. Most of them were in the mild stage though some of them were in the severe stage as they had a track record of mental disorder in the past, making them more vulnerable than the average person.

How would you suggest people handle the stress from the COVID-19 situation? Self-awareness is important. The three main aspects you should focus on are your emotions, behavior, and thoughts. Observe yourself if you get more emotional, like easily get fretful, down or upset, see if your eating and sleep behavior remain the same or not, and observe your own thoughts because, during a crisis, people tend to be more anxious and pessimistic. If you find yourself experiencing these troubles, seek some support from family, friends, and co-workers. In case the support from your close circle cannot help reducing stress, consulting with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or therapist would be a good decision.

Alcohol consumption in Thailand Consuming alcohol is generally accepted in the country, though it is subject to specific regulations which some people may find surprising. For example, it is only possible to sell alcohol from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 12:00 midnight, except for hotels, which can sell alcohol 24/7. It is also forbidden to sell alcohol during the three official Buddha days in the country, and most restaurants and shops will stop selling during other important bank holidays. Finally, while it is allowed to drink alcohol outside, you may want to refrain from getting inebriated at the beach, where controls happen often.
