What comes into the mind of travelers when they start to think about sea, sun and sand? Phuket is an increasingly popular answers to this…. and for good reason as the island offers a warm tropical ocean, beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and a multitude of exciting and fun activities. Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, is located 862 kilometers south of Bangkok. Often called the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’, or ‘Pearl of the South’, its natural resources; rocky peninsulas, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical in-land forests contribute to making it southern Thailand’s wealthiest, busiest, most visited and popular province. Nestled in the tropical zone off the west coast of southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean, the province covers an area of approximately 543 square kilometers (excluding small islets). It is estimated that Phuket Province covers an area of approximately 590 square kilometers if its 39 other small islands are included. The island’s total length, from north to south, is estimated at 48.7 kilometers and it is approximately 21.3 kilometers wide. Phuket borders with Phang-Nga province to the north; connected by the Sarasin Bridge. The remainder of the island is encircled by the Andaman Sea; an area which is home to many of the best diving sites in the country.
Staying on the island is easy, as there are only two seasons in the year - the rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The low season of Phuket is between September and October as these are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November to February, when it is possible to see the clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breezes and marvel at the crystal clear waters while lying on powdery, palmfringed beaches. Average temperatures ranges between 23°C and 33°C. Phuket’s topology is exceptional with 70 percent of its area covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the centraland eastern parts of the island. The island does not have any ma jor rivers, but has nine smaller brooks and creeks. Phuket has a lot more to offer than just its natural beauty. Sino-Portuguese architecture casts its spell delighting travelers to Phuket Town, while Phuket-style hospitality never fails to impress visitors from all walks of life. In addition, accommodation ranging from world-class resorts to tropical-style bungalows caters to the different needs of travelers. For seafood lovers, there is so much choice including Phuket’s famous lobster. Altogether, these characteristics make Phuket a truly unique destination.

Songkran The original new year
Phuket celebrates the original Thai New Year with much of the same as the rest of the country. Traditionally, there was only one ‘New Year’ in Thailand. Songkran, the start of the Buddhist year, is still celebrated between the 13th – 15th April, at the height of the hot season. Translated literally as “the passing of”, Songkran marks the beginning of the solar calendar, when the sun passes from the sign of Taurus into Aries. In the rural community – and until recently Thailand was almost entirely an agricultural society – this has been a perfect time to take a break from the business of earning a living. The rice harvest is in, and replanting has to await the coming of the rains. For centuries, this has presented an opportunity for young men and women to meet socially, turning the lull in the seasonal cycle of labor to matters of courtship. It is a time of joy, and Thais have long marked the occasion by making merit – by offering food to monks and by releasing caged birds, turtles, and fish. The latter custom had its origins where villagers would collect fish stranded in the pools left as the ponds and canals dried up in the searing heat, saving www.theguidephuket.com
them till Songkran for release into the river. Not only was this a means of making merit, it served as an effective conservationist programme. You still see vendors offering these creatures for release in many parts of Bangkok as well as in rural areas, pyramids of tiny wooden cages filled with twittering birds, metal tanks swimming with turtles, eels, and fish. Water is a key element in the festival. Buddha images, both public and private, are washed with lustral water, while the whole house is given an especially thorough cleaning. The idea seems to be to start the New Year fresh and clean both in body and spirit. Most noticeably to the casual visitor are the water fights. Thais and foreigners alike spend the days dousing each other (and any unlucky bystanders) with water – a fine and refreshing experience, given the prevailing weather. The custom of throwing water is probably in part only an exuberant spillover of the tradition of pouring lustral water over the hands of monks and respected elders. More basically, however, the return of water to the parched
soil is an expression of hope and anticipation, an invitation to the cooling, life-giving rainy season to come. This practice migrated long ago to Thailand from India by way of Burma. It thus came first to Chiang Mai, where it is still practiced with special enthusiasm. In those early days, there was little communication, no easy links between Chiang Mai and Bangkok, and the water-throwing took a long time to reach the capital. When it did, though, it was embraced with such abandon that the police officially had to ban it as a traffic hazard. The prohibition has never really taken hold and today if you ride a Bangkok bus during Songkran you must still be prepared for a drenching. Along the streets you find gleeful knots of people heaving buckets of water at any passing vehicle. If you’re driving, keep your windows closed. If you’re on foot you may get ambushed by a careening tuk-tuk jammed full of young revellers armed with pails of water. It’s all in the spirit of good fellowship and people are pleased to receive as good as they give out. Have fun! Story by CP
It’s a fairly big island offering all manner of things to do. However, it’s quite surprising that there are still a number of holiday makers who come to get away from everyday life but soon get bored with dreamy beaches, comfortable hotel rooms and fantastic food. They want to experience more. They want to see how the locals live and experience something different. Luckily, with Phuket being the island it is, there are a number of other options for those seeking something other than the norm. Here are The Guide Phuket’s options for an alternative Phuket holiday experience. • Crowded beach, quiet beach Find the one that you really want to spend your holiday time on. If you spend your time on Patong Beach, it’s highly likely that you will think all Phuket’s beaches are the same, crowded. However, while it’s true to say that Patong Beach is often bustling with people, there are others to where you can escape and find complete solitude. Drive away from Patong and you’ll soon come to realise that there are smaller, quieter beaches. And by the time you reach the far north or south of the island you’re guaranteed to find beaches that you’ll have virtually to yourself, even during the high-season. So remember, crowded beach or quiet beach, the option is completely yours. • Visiting Wats – Buddhist Monasteries All Buddhist monasteries are open to the public during the day, and visitors are usually welcome. Since these are active holy places of worship, and the residence of monks, visitors should show respecting keeping well dressed and remaining quiet, Mum and Dad; keep the kids on a leash and always be culturally sensitive. • Elephant Trekking The wild elephant population of Phuket was wiped out last century, but has been replaced in recent years by and influx of animals for the tourist trade. Today there remains just a few hundred elephants on Phuket Island, all domesticated, most working in tourism. Indeed, riding an elephant is an experience not to be missed. The lumbering monsters are incredibly agile. www.theguidephuket.com
Taking an elephant ride helps to keep the beasts employed, fed and out of the cities, where many can be taken by destitute owners in search of money and food. • Phuket Town Phuket Town is small but incredibly interesting, a potpourri of different cultural influences of markets and shopping centers, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. Anyone spending a few days on Phuket Island should take time to visit, be it for sight-seeing, cultural or historical interest or shopping. • Cultural Village Cultural shows featuring skilled Thai dancers from the different regions of the country, martial arts demonstrations, elephant rides and Thai dinners are all brought together at Phuket’s original cultural garden; there is also attached an orchid farm for all the budding botanists out there. • Jungle Trekking With most of the rainforest on Phuket long since eaten up by rubber plantations, it is not easy to find ideal trekking grounds. Again, it’s best to sign on with a company providing this service. Often they take their trekkers right off Phuket into neighbouring Phang Nga province, where some beautiful areas of forest remain. • Spas Massage and herbal steam rooms health resorts, spas and herbal saunas are proliferating, and some fine examples offering a wide range of treatments are now found on Phuket. Thailand has its own traditional herbal saunas, and there are several local ones around the island. While many large resorts now feel they are incomplete without a spa, there are also several independent establishments. • View Points Phuket’s most famous view point, Laem Phrom Thep at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor to the island. Thus it attracts a fleet of tour busses and cars each evening as people come to witness the sun fall into the Andaman Sea. Indeed, it’s often a spectacular sight, but there are many quieter places. The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people when the heavens turn red, the view from any of the beaches can also be spectacular.

Phuket boasts a myriad of beaches up and down its coastline, so instead of sticking to the beach closest to your hotel, why not get out and explore what the island has to offer? Take a look at the variety of beach choices in Phuket. · Mai Khao Beach
Located north of Phuket International Airport, Mai Khao Beach is a lovely beach to escape the crowds. The long stretch of sand seems to go on and on, while the soft sand and clear waters are stunning. Mai Khao Beach is almost always empty, which gives the beach a very deserted feeling, even during high season when some of the island’s other beaches are crowded.
· Nai Yang Beach
Nai Yang is a charming beach a few minutes south of Phuket International Airport. The northern end of the beach is part of Sirinath National Park, which protects the beach from development. The atmosphere here is laid-back, and the beach is excellent for families. If you are looking to eat fresh seafood right on the beach, Nai Yang Is definitely the spot!
sand and excellent sunsets. Behind the beach, there is a strip of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops in case you forgot anything needed for your holiday.
· Patong Beach
The beating heart of Phuket’s nightlife, Patong Beach is the most famous beach on the island and the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. The beach itself has soft sand and warm clear water. Behind the beach you’ll find the hustle and bustle of Phuket’s tourism business, which features hotels, restaurants, bars, street bazaars and shops crammed into a colorful, lively mix that showcases a vibrant Thai tourist beach town.
· Paradise Beach
Paradise Beach is a small beach a few minutes south of Patong. It’s known for its dramatic scenery - large granite boulders, swaying palm trees and crystal clear water. The beach is a wonderful place to learn to scuba dive and it also hosts a wealth of activities such as kayaking and beach volleyball for when you grow tired of lazing about in the sun.
· Karon Beach
· Nai Thon Beach
Located on the island’s west coast, Karon Beach stretches as far as the eye can see. It’s a favorite amongst tourists, and within close proximity to Patong. During certain times of the year, the current can be rather rough here, so always best to exercise caution before going for a swim.
· Layan Beach
Known as Phuket’s ‘Surfer’s Paradise,’ Kata Beach is one of the most beautiful of all of Phuket’s beaches. It’s a half-moon crescent of white sand which lines a bay that is cut deep between two green headlands. The water at Kata Beach is crystal clear and there is a small coral reef which is excellent for snorkeling. During the green season, Kata Beach is a great place to learn how to surf due to its rolling waves.
Nai Thon Beach is located within close proximity to Nai Yang and maintains a very laid-back appeal. The beach has long been a favorite with regular visitors to the island as it has a very remote feel. Essentially a quiet bay nestled at the foot of lush green hills, Nai Thon Beach features a fine strip of sand and a handful of delightful eateries to choose from just off of the beach.
· Kata Beach
Layan Beach is located at the northern end of Bang Tao Beach. Quite remote, the beach encompasses a shallow bay of crystal clear water. Layan Beach is home to a variety of luxury resorts, but still retains its local charm. If you’re looking for a quiet beach to relax for a day, then Layan Beach is definitely the spot!
· Kata Noi Beach
· Bang Tao Beach
· Ao Sane Beach
Home to much of Phuket’s 5-star luxury resorts, Bang Tao Beach is a pleasant stretch of beach on Phuket’s western coast. The northern end of the beach has a small coral reef which is perfect for snorkeling. At certain times of the year, swimming can be dangerous here due to strong currents.
· Surin Beach
Located between Bang Tao and Kamala Beach, Surin Beach is one of the most beautiful stretches of beach on the island. Surin Beach boasts fine white sand and emerald sea, and is a favorite amongst locals and tourists alike. The beach often has rather strong winds, making it an ideal spot for windsurfing.
· Laem Singh Beach
Laem Singh Beach is one of Phuket’s most beautiful beaches. Hidden between Kamala and Surin beaches, Laem Singh is blessed by large green trees and emerald seas. Currently, the only way to reach the beach is by boat as it’s been chosen as the site of a 5-star luxury resort development.
· Kamala Beach
Kamala Beach is a 3-kilometer long stretch of beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast. Essentially a fisherman’s village, Kamala Beach is family friendly with soft www.theguidephuket.com
Kata Noi is a small, hidden gem of a beach just south of Kata. The beach is a tiny bay that is home to fine, white sand and excellent corals to the southern end of the beach. It’s a superb beach for snorkeling and splashing in the waves. Sunsets here throughout the year are spectacular. Ao Sane Beach is a small, almost hidden bay, located north of Nai Harn Beach. To access this beach, you need to drive through the grounds of The Nai Harn Phuket beach resort. Ao Sane is a small, rocky beach that is excellent for snorkeling. There’s a small on-site restaurant to grab a bite to eat at when you tire from splashing in the waves.
· Nai Harn Beach
Local favorite Nai Harn Beach is located at the southern tip of Phuket. A large by a surrounded by green headlands, Nai Harn is backed by Casuarina trees and coconut palms. The water here is warm and clear, but currents can be dangerous at certain times of the year. A row of tiny restaurants line the back of the beach, and there are a few shops selling souvenirs and beach goods.
· Ao Yon Beach
Ao Yon is a tiny beach located near Cape Panwa, and approximately 10km from Phuket Town. The local neighborhood is rather sleepy, which means the beach is tranquil and perfect for relaxing. The bay is usually filled with boats and yachts, so swimming here can often be challenging. However, it’s a great beach to relax with a book or watch the sunset from.

A ZIMUT 55E
At the heart of Italian culture is an innate sense of fashion and passion for life. The Azimuth brand adheres to this credo, injecting each and every one of their yachts with stunning designs and elegant touches. This is not limited to their innovative newer models but also evident in the timeless designs of earlier yachts. New to the Phuket charter market, this 2010 Azimut 55e has recently been re-fitted, keeping the yacht’s Italian touches. It begins with the yacht’s tasteful silhouette. The forward portion of the bridge, the pilothouse windshield and the foredeck dissolve into the bow's stem, forming an elegant waterdrop. Her elegant exterior design makes a stunning first impression, alluding to the fine attention paid to the design of her interior. The yacht makes a statement where ever it goes and will be sure to draw eyes during a cruise from Phuket. Up on the flybridge, uninterrupted 360 degree views on Phang Nga bay can be enjoyed. The dining area comfortably seats 10 people, while leaving ample room for 3 sun lounging cushions. Teak decking covers the swim platform and all outdoor lounging areas. The richness warms the exterior and contrasts beautifully with the yacht’s white fiberglass finish. A curved stainless-frame sliding glass door between the cockpit and saloon is beautifully crafted and connects the saloon visually to the cockpit. A waterdrop motif is present throughout the vessel, guiding the eye slowly over her frame with no harsh angles to interrupt your gaze.
Once inside, there is no doubt this is an Italian craft. A rich warm interior welcomes you, the Thai inspired upholstery complimenting the Italian style fixtures. The galley has an island serving bar that separates it from the saloon but keeping the chef that much closer to conversation in a truly elegant open plan. Azimut's strength in interior engineering is evident throughout the cabins, especially the master state-
room. Every nook is utilized. Along the starboard side are a desk and workstation that can accommodate computer sessions or chart work. The boat can accommodate six overnight passengers comfortably. Indeed, the Azimut 55e is an exemplar of simple, stunning and elegant passion. Charter her today to experience Phang Nga Bay in ultimate luxury, aboard a timelessly chic yacht.

TWILIGHT SKY AT THE SIS KATA A trendy, well designed Resort tucked into the Kata Hill, The SIS Kata commands stunning views over the neighborhood that stretch out into Kata Beach. A popular Resort with young travelers, The SIS Kata is also an exceptional place to dine. The Twilight Sky Restaurant presents the perfect opportunity to enjoy the Resort exceptional views while dining on fresh, creative menu dishes.
Twilight Sky’s Hot Stone Home Cooking menu is an interesting concept that lets diners cook their food by themselves. We chose the 200 gram Grain Fed Australian Rib Eye Steak, and watched in anticipation as it was cooked to perfection in front of our eyes. Served with three dipping sauces as well as fresh vegetables and potatoes, it’s a delicious meal that’s also affordable.
The restaurant team at Twilight Sky is passionate about food, and led by Chef Yha, creates great tasting, innovating dishes at affordable prices. An example of this innovation is served in the form of the Spicy Fresh Salmon Salad, served on a cool Himalayan Salt Block. It’s a delicious blend of fresh Thai ingredients while the saltiness from the salt block adds just enough zing to the dish. Light and refreshing, it’s a great meal to enjoy with a glass of cool white wine while the sun sets.
For locals and expats in Phuket looking for somewhere new to dine, Twilight Sky at The SIS Kata is highly recommended. The restaurant’s ambience is chic, the views are breathtaking and the finely curated menu is full of culinary delights that are sure to tantalize the taste buds.
The flavorful Classic Lamb Curry is a twist on traditional Thai southern curry and is chockfull of potatoes, onion, cashew nut and crispy shallot. The curry is hearty, spicy and extremely tasty. This dish is one of Chef Yha’s recommended favorites, and it’s worth sampling when at The SIS Kata. www.theguidephuket.com

Exploring the Tale of Tigers at Phuket’s Tiger Kingdom
A visit to Phuket’s Tiger Kingdom allows you to get up close and personal with many ma jestic giant felines. The visit is certain to be a truly memorable moment, and Tiger Kingdom is also home to a delicious restaurant and offers delightful souvenir shopping. As there are a variety of tigers on-site, before entering Tiger Kingdom, visitors are allowed to choose the size and number of tigers they would like to visit ranging from the smallest to the biggest of the animals. The smallest cubs tend to be the sleepiest and spend most of their days eating, napping and enjoying play sessions with their babysitters. It is possible to sit down next to the tigers and interact as their babysitters and trainers will keep a close eye on your interaction and advise where and how to approach the baby tigers. Visitors are allowed to enjoy some playful time with the baby tigers, and observe first hand that although they are similar to overgrown cats, they still have a hunter’s instinct.

Transport
Transport on the island How much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways. To and from the airport Airport transfers are relatively simple. The airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibuses are available to get to the ma jor beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National have offices located in the airport. ‘Tuk-Tuks’ If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck used to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine
makes. There are fleets of these in all ma jor tourist areas and they will take you anywhere for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket Town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself. Motorcycle Taxis These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking way to get around. All fares must be negotiated before the ride. These taxi motorcycle drivers are easily identified by their special colored jackets showing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets. Renting a Motorcycle Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but do be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times and all riders to wear helmets. Also motorcycle lights must be turned on at all times, including during the daytime! The police occasionally enforce all these laws, so beware. The real danger in Phuket is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. Renting Your Own Car Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are readily found in every beach area and ma jor rental companies operate in most resorts. When renting private vehicles from the side of the road be aware that few of these vehicles have insurance and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out. Regional Buses The long distance bus station is in Phuket Town and across from here both air-con tour buses and cheap, ‘orange crush’ buses leave for destinations north, south and east. There are regular services to Bangkok, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakorn Srithammarat, Trang, Haad Yai and other minor provincial capitals.

Transport by Boat Regular ferry boat services from Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are unscheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi. Song-taews There are few buses on Phuket and the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colorful with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every major beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise slowly around the streets picking up passengers. Song-taews are slow but cheap with the fare from Phuket Town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!
