GETTING TO KNOW

Puri Hiranpruek of Villa De Ceylon Puri Hiranpruek is well known as a famous Thai actor and TV show anchor, but he is also a pioneering property developer who is partnering in an exciting condominium development adjacent to the trendy O2 Beach Club in Chalong. We caught up with him at his Villa De Ceylon launch event. (Khun Puri Hiranpruek and his wife, Khun Alicha Hiranpruek.)

What is your background and education? I was just a normal kid but I do have strong links to Phuket. My grandfather Dr. Sujit Hiranpruk, was a high ranking civil servant who worked for the Foreign Ministry and he bought land early on in Phuket including an east coast island which was later developed and run as a pearl farm for the last fty years. I was educated at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and graduated in Political Science. What background did you bring to property development? Initially I managed to get various jobs in television and then entered the acting profession and have been working in TV for almost twenty years. About six years ago I also started a TV production company specializing in travel and tourism and also doing a lot of underwater videoing as diving is a passion of mine. Also, about six years ago, I discovered the beautiful town of Pai to the north-west of Chiang Mai and decided to buy land there and develop a small villa resort. The villa development called PuriPai Villas features a unique traditional Thai wooden style of building and overlooks the stunning Pai-Mae Hong Son valley and is now the biggest project in the area valued at 200 million Baht. Tell us about your new Villa De Ceylon development in Phuket My partner and I decided to invest in Phuket on a terri c piece of land adjacent to the beautiful O2 Beach Club overlooking the fascinating Chalong Bay and Koh Lon Island

on the east coast. We decided to build a ve storey, 42 unit, condominium block with one to three bedroom units with a low entry price point of just 2.7 million Baht to make it very accessible to Thai and foreign investors alike. We believe the target audience will be fun couples and investors who enjoy the beachside lifestyle and use of O2 Beach Club which is part of the purchase price. They will also enjoy being located very close to all the island’s shopping and other amenities. The development features as swimming pool, tness equipment and free WiFi and shuttle bus service to neayby vicinities and we also have a management company to take care of the units and rent them out for those who wish to generate income. When will Villa De Ceylon condominium be complete? We will break ground on September 2014 and then have a launch party probably next January when we’ll be thirty percent complete. We’ll be fully built by the end of 2015 and purchasers who buy now receive a 100,000 Baht discount, free air conditioning and built-in bedroom wardrobe, plus Modernform kitchen set and 32 inch LCD TV and membership of O2 Beach Club for ve years, so it’s best to get in early! Life’s a Beach

With a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available. · Mai Khao Beach

· Patong Beach

North of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning plus it’s almost empty! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are ve deep on Patong.

The most famous beach on the island is the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colorful and lively mix that typi es a Thai tourist beach town.

· Nai Yang Beach Just south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.

· Nai Thon Beach A little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possessing a similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favorite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a ne strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach.

· Layan Beach This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim it’s not the place to go.

· Bang Tao Beach

· Paradise Beach Paradise Beach is a little beach just 5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and large rocks anking either side.

· Karon Beach Karon is another of the beautiful, west-coast beaches that have made Phuket famous. This beach is the rst main stop south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland. A quick 10 minute drive connects the two.

· Kata Beach Kata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral offers excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.

Bang Tao Beach has in recent years seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong currents. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.

· Kata Noi Beach

· Surin Beach

· Ao Sane Beach

Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with ne white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsur ng. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.

Ao Sane beach is a small bay and is located to the north of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through The Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.

· Laem Singh Beach

Just south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for snorkeling as many sh inhabit the rocks and corals along the headland to the south.

· Nai Harn Beach

Laem Singh Beach is small and very popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning.

Nai Harn is one of the more isolated beaches, nestled at the southern tip of the island in a bay de ned by headlands and islets. The beach is backed by the green of Casuarina trees and coconut palms, acting as shade for the restaurants that now line the beach.

· Kamala Beach

· Ao Yon Beach

Kamala is a 3-kilometer long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast which has undergone recent developments to its main street, but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a growing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range. www.theguidephuket.com

Ao Yon is another peaceful beach ideally suited for watching the sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket Town. Although quiet with beautiful emerald sea this beach is not really suitable for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts.

Activit es

n the Island

It’s a big island,

offering all manner of things to do. It’s surprising that so many holiday makers, who are trying to get away from it all, soon get bored with that dreamy combination of a perfect beach, a comfortable hotel room and great food. After a few days, most people want more. They want to go places, to see how the local people live and to experience new things. Happily with Phuket being a large island, about 50 kilometers long, there are all sorts of interesting things to do here. Below we offer some suggestion.

www.theguidephuket.com

• Crowned Beach, Quiet Beach Find the one that suits you spend most of your holiday in Patong and you might think the beaches of Phuket are crowned. While Patong buzzes with people and activity, there are many other beaches to which one can escape in complete solitude. You just have to drive. As one moves away from patong the beaches become progressively quieter. By the time you get to the top of the island you’re guaranteed kilometers of sand to yourself, even in peak season, so remember crowned beach, quiet beach; the choice is there. • Visiting Wats – Buddhist Monasteries All Buddhist Monasteries are open to the public during the day, and visitors are usually welcome. Since these are active holy places of worship, and the residence of monks, visitors should show respecting keeping well dressed and remaining quiet, Mum and Dad; keep the kids on a leash and always be culturally sensitive. • Elephant Trekking The wild elephant population of Phuket was wiped out last century, but has been replaced in recent years by and in ux of animals for the tourist trade. Today there remains just a few hundred elephants on Phuket Island, all domesticated, most working in tourism. Indeed, riding an elephant is an experience not to be missed. The lumbering monsters are incredibly agile. Taking an elephant ride helps to keep the beasts employed, fed and out of the cities, where many can be taken by destitute owners in search of money and food. • Phuket Town Phuket Town is small but incredibly interesting, a potpourri of different cultural influences of markets and shopping centers, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. Anyone spending a few days on Phuket Island should take time to visit, be it for sight-seeing, cultural or historical interest or shopping. • Zoo Phuket’s only zoo is small, but pleasant, displaying some of Thailand’s almost vanished wildlife. Their tigers are fed well enough that one can sit with them and have a photo taken. We recommend going early or late, to avoid the tour buses that arrive mid morning and mid afternoon. It is in a small road off the east side of Chao Fah East Road, about half way between the town and Chalong’s 5-way intersection. The turnoff is well signposted and easy to nd.

• Bungy Jump Consider yourself adventurous? Got real guts? If you haven’t tried bungee jump yet, you should take the ride to the top with a big rubber band around your ankles and ght the internal struggle that every jumper meets when standing 54 meters above the ground. Logic might tell us it is quite safe, but another part of our body screams “No! Don’t jump!” But with their friends at the bottom, waiting expectantly, most people manage to throw themselves off and experience a rush like no other. • Cultural Village Cultural shows featuring skilled Thai dancers from the different regions of the country, martial arts demonstrations, elephant rides and Thai dinners are all brought together at Phuket’s original cultural garden; there is also attached orchid farm for all the budding botanists out there. • Jungle Trekking With most of rainforest on Phuket long since eaten up by rubber plantations, it is not easy to nd ideal trekking grounds. Again, it’s best to sign on with company providing this service. Often they take their trekkers right off Phuket into neighbouring Phang Nga province, where some beautiful areas of forest remain. • Spas Massage and herbal steam rooms Health resorts, spas and herbal saunas are proliferating, and some fine example offering a wide range of treatments are now found on Phuket. Thailand has its own traditional herbal saunas, and there are several local ones around the island. While many large and resorts now feel they are incomplete without a spa, there are also several independent establishments.

• View Points Phuklet’s most famous view point, Laem Phrom Thep at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor to the island. Thus it attracts a eet of tour busses and car each evening as people come to witness the sun fall into the Andaman Sea. Indeed, it’s often a spectacular sight, but there are many quieter places. The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people and when the heavens turn red, the view from any of the beaches can also be spectacular.

Spl a ash sh Jungle Have fun rain or shine! As many of you probably know, there’s a fairly long rainy season here in Phuket which starts in late April and continues through until early November. However, this period doesn’t really see Phuket become a less popular destination to visit, and you’re still able to experience all the fun and exciting things to do in Phuket. And if you really don’t mind being wet then a visit to Splash Jungle will bring all the fun and excitement you need on rainy day in Phuket. And for those who live in Phuket and have never experienced Splash Jungle, pay it a visit, as we can guarantee that rainy days in Phuket will never be boring again. So call you friends, brothers, sisters and families and head to Splash Jungle for a fun and laughter lled day out. Splash Jungle is located 10 minutes south of Phuket International airport or 30 minutes from Phuket Town, but if you’re a guest at Centara Grand West Sands Resort & Villas Phuket it’s just a few minutes walk away from your room, check out http:// www.centarahotelsresorts.com/centaragrand/special.asp for special Thai resident room rates and more offers for this rainy season. After paying your entrance fee at the ticket counter, if you’re an expat please take your work permit of Thai drivers license for reduced rates, you will receive a colored, numbered wristband with a locker key attached, orange for women and Blue for men. However, this is not only for locker use, but also to record any food and beverages you may have during your visit, the nal bill of which will be paid upon departure, p and is a fantastic idea which eliminates the need to carry cash around w with you, thus meaning less worry and more ffun! The locker roo rooms oms are cl clean and spacious with w shower, show toilet and ch changing hanging facilities, towels towe ls are also available to rent sho should you forget fo orget yo yours at an additional charge of additiona a THB100 per p piece. page to let your social media friends where you are and what you’re up to. Or maybe a better idea would be to leave the phone in your locker so that you can really enjoy yourself without the unnecessary worry of getting your phone wet! If you don’t have a waterproof bag to secure your camera or smart phone but don’t want to miss out on some extremely fun fearsome face shots, there’s photo taking services at various points around the venue, along with fun loving and helpful life guards who are always willing to capture some shots for you. If you’re in a family with younger children the Aqua Play and Wave Pools are a great place to start, but if you’re looking for immediate heart stopping fun then the Slide Series station is the place to head! The Slide Series station features 3 waterslides all of which nish in the same splashdown pool, in atable rings are required for two of the three, so make sure you collect one before climbing to the start as it’s a long and time wasting journey back to the bottom, and make sure you and anybody riding with you t the required criteria beforehand to avoid any disappointment, there are often some unhappy kids at the top who are unable to ride due to weight and height restrictions.

The King and Queen of this water park are the Boomerango and Super Bowl at the Slide Station. At Boomerang you travel through a pitch black tube before shooting up a vertical wall, with your only thought being whether you’ll stop before reaching the top, only then to reverse free fall down a 15 meter high ramp and down into the splashdown pool. Whilst at the Super Bowl you’ll have to grab your tube tightly as you travel down a dark tube before rushing into the giant super bowl where you’ll make several wild turns before ending in an exhilarating transition into the splashdown pool. To bring the heart rate back to normal, take a tour on the Lazy River, and oat along a 335 meters maze of adventure through and around the gardens and delights of Splash Jungle Water Park. It’s also the perfect ride to get yourself dry before heading off to grab something to eat or drink at one of the park’s restaurants or bars.

There are 2 restaurants at Splash Jungle, Jungle Deli is the air-conditioned restaurant where you can dine indoors or out on ne international food in a casual setting. Whilst Coconut Café is perfect for those wanting to dine al-fresco on a burger, hot dog, pizza or popular Thai dish. Nothing beats the heat of the afternoon sun more than an ice cold drink, and at Splash bar you can sip on your choice of seasonal fruit smoothie or a bottle of cold beer whilst sat in the water under the shade of a bamboo umbrella! Once here you really don’t care if it’s raining or a deadly heat outside! Introducing

Chef Alongkorn Trangan of SLEEP WITH ME HOTEL design hotel @ patong Chef Alongkorn Trangan (Korn) honed his skills in the kitchen at a work-study culinary course at Phuket Vocational College. After completing his course, Chef Korn managed to land himself a trainee position at a hotel restaurant here in Phuket, and for the past 20 years, because of his love and passion for cooking, he has gained experience in the kitchen of some of Phuket’s most popular hotel restaurants and progressed to become one of the island’s most sought after hotel chefs. However, Chef Korn’s reputation is not purely down to his vast experience, his 20 years in kitchens has also seen Chef Korn receiving a number of accolades in recognition of his exemplary culinary work, proof of his dedication to continuously strive to better himself and the culinary experiences he wishes to provide. Chef Korn’s most recent accolade hasn’t seen him receive an award or certi cate to store in his trophy cabinet, it’s seen him, for the rst time in career, take up the position of Executive Chef at SLEEP WITH ME HOTEL design hotel @patong, a position he has been chosen for because of his knowledge and high level of competence, and his and the resort’s desire to present new culinary ideas to it’s growing number of guests. It’s also a position which allows him to have pretty much a free rein when it comes to designing the resort’s culinary offerings in each of its 5 outlets. The Guide Phuket recently had the opportunity to talk with Chef Korn and try some of the dishes he has recently introduced to SLEEP WITH ME HOTEL design hotel @patong. What is your food design concept? There is one word which I interpret and apply when creating any of my own dishes, Cosmopolitan. I believe that every chef should have their own clear identity when it comes to the style of their food and mine is based on my own Cosmopolitan concept. For me it’s very important to be able to understand the variety of cuisines and ingredients from all around the world and to be able to blend as many of these together to make a dish that people will understand as well as eat. If I’m able to do this, and my food creates an impression to those who are eating it then I feel I have succeeded. Please tell us about some of the awards you have won I’ve won a number of awards both prior to and whilst working here at SLEEP WITH ME HOTEL design hotel @ patong. However, I feel it’s more important to tell you about the ones I have won here as they’re not only about me as an individual but as our restaurant team as a whole. Our General Manager supports the entire restaurant team with their own development, and he wants us all to have the ability to compete in local and national competitions whenever possible. And as a reward for his support our team recently took home 6 medals at the THAIFEX Thailand Ultimate Chef Challenge

www.theguidephuket.com

2014 - World of Food Asia 2014 at Bangkok. Within this competition our team joined 6 catering and cooking categories and got to show our professional skills to judges from domestic and international cooking institutes, and we came out with at least 1 medal in 5 of the 6 categories; Individual Classic Thai Desserts – Gold, Main Course of Seafood - Bronze, Fruit and Vegetable Carving - Bronze, Main Course of Poultry - Silver and Bronze, and Modern Presentation Thai Cuisine - Bronze. And more recently, our team was winners of the “Fruit and Vegetable Carving” and “Cocktail Party Menu for 30 people” categories at the Cuisine of Grouper Andaman 2014 which was held at Central Festival Phuket. I believe our success at these 2 recent events con rms that SLEEP WITH ME HOTEL delivers the best food services for customers. Do you have some dishes you would like to recommend? There are too many I would like to recommend, but if I have to give one speci c dish it would have to be the Hazelnut Pork Tenderloin. This is tender sliced roasted pork tenderloin sprinkled with hazelnuts and baked with three types of cheese, to add a bit of color to the dish it’s lled with a green apple red wine stuf ng and topped with a choice of barbecue, plum mousse or blueberry sauce. This is a favorite amongst our worldwide guests, not only because it’s presented like a world class international dish, but also because it features the sweet, sour, salty and spicy avors famous in Thai cuisine. H Q L V L X & V X R O )DEX the Banyan Tree Brunch

S ty É? Relax tion a d Gr

t had been another busy week in Phuket‌..getting up at 6am to cope with the traf c etc. We decided we needed a Sunday of indulgent relaxation, with great cuisine and a bottle of chilled Rose to bring a touch of healing balm to our frazzled souls. Where better then than the Laguna area’s lovely Banyan Tree Resort and Spa’s Sunday Brunch to kick back for a long, languorous experience stretching well into the afternoon with fabulous cuisine; a terri c wine and drinks selection; and live jazz to ensure you really recover from the stresses of the rest of the week in Phuket? As we walked into the huge, airy brunching area, with the lovely verdant Banyan Tree grounds dappled with cool lakes and pools outside the huge windows, we immediately felt a sense of relaxing anticipation waft over us. We settled into our window seat overlooking the brightly diamondiferous lake outside and ordered a chilled bottle of sparkling Rose from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. We realized that this was going to be not just another Sunday brunch, but something very special and memorable. After a rst sip of wine to toast our good fortune at having chosen this terri c venue to re-charge our batteries, we took a walk around the extensive salas lled with abundant cooking stations and food displays. The center of the main room at the Banyan Tree’s brunch sets the stage for its highlight of live seafood ranging from Canadian lobster and tiger prawns, to blue crab and red snapper, to cray sh and mussels all ready to be cooked for your delectation exactly as you desire. Then there’s the wide range of cooking stations, each manned by a Master Chef ready to do your culinary bidding in cooking any speci c dish which you wish. The range of

produce and dishes on display represents something of a gastronomic voyage around the globe and some of the great food cultures of the world and so a well thought-out plan of dining is probably a key adjunct to getting the most out of the extraordinary array of possibilities on offer. Tempting delicacies such as pan-seared foie gras, wok-fried Manila clams and Japanese sushi, sashimi and a salad and cold cuts selection that leave you salivating were all extremely tempting. But it’s important not to go too overboard on all the starters and main courses as a meander through the decadent dessert selection will quickly reveal to you. Featuring pastries, tropical fruits, freshly prepared crêpes, ice creams and Thai desserts it’s another tempting world unto itself. And be sure to leave a little room to savor the generous assortment of French and Italian cheeses to nish things off. Banyan Tree’s Sunday Brunch offers a dedicated Kids Club with entertainment for the little ones and prices start at 2,600++ THB per person including free ow soft drinks and beer. For only 3,200++ THB per person, each couple will enjoy a complimentary bottle of ne French bubbly. Kids up to 8 dine for free at Banyan Tree and children between the ages of 8-12 receive a 50% discount as well as free ow soft drinks. Italian Genius in Southern Phuket

DaVinci Ristorante & Pizzeria, located in BZenter in Nai Harn, has established a reputation as a very ne Italian eatery since opening six years ago and is set in a convivial inside/outside courtyard where they offer friendly al fresco dining conducive of long meals, good conversation, great wines and cocktails resulting in happy gatherings of families and friends. DaVinci is owned and operated by the charming David Phillip Roberts and Jana Sasikova, they developed the large Nai Harn courtyard in which DaVinci is situated into the nearest thing that Phuket has to a genuine Italian Piazza. The Piazza holds an almost mythic place as the hub of Italian social life offering a convivial alchemy of ne food, wine and conversation in a time-honored ritual of sharing and enjoyment. DaVinci’s interpretation of this wonderful Italian institution encompasses a series of meeting places, from their cocktail lounge and wine bar, to the ne Nai Harn restaurant, to a private function room, to a kiddies’ play area. The enticing open-sided V Lounge Cocktail and Wine Bar is a space with a chilled vibe and often features cool music fostering relaxing conversation and sociability and is a great place to start the evening. In late 2013 Jana and Claudio built on the success of their Nai Harn restaurant by opening their second DaVinci restaurant in the Kata area, on the road between Kata and Kata Noi Beaches. This slightly smaller restaurant has many of the same decorative icons as in Nai Harn and a menu that’s 40 percent different from its sister outlet, re ecting the ideas of Chef Claudio and the Italian Chef who oversees this new DaVinci.

Both DaVinci restaurants offer a wide selection of wines, focusing of course on Italy and many are served by the glass or carafe. In addition they both have a wide selection of cocktails, beers and spirits, all at reasonable prices. Fine Italian fare is the order of the day at both outlets, with all ingredients sourced fresh daily from local markets, plus hydroponically-grown vegetables, home-made pastas, sensational risottos, fresh imported and local seafood, the nest imported meats and tempting cheeses and desserts to round off the evening. All meals are beautifully prepared and served and the staff is as attractive as they are knowledgeable and friendly.

Beyond Coffee

Mention the name ‘Boncafe’ and people invariably think of coffee related products like coffee beans and coffee brewing machines. But there is more to Boncafe than just that. Lyons Designer Sauce, Bontea Mix, Bontea Signature, Matcha greentea, and Torani syrup are some of the other products which should come in most handy at discerning cafes or your house.

If you are looking for ways to enhance the variety of your drinks or bakery items, try one of the eight avors of Lyons Designer Sauce: caramel, chocolate, white chocolate, cinnamon, lemon zest, raspberry, mango and kiwi lime. You can dress up and add avors to your regular cappuccino, for example, by drawing on the milk foam with Lyons Designer Sauce. Alternatively, you can use the sauce as topping for various bakery items as well, or use our Lyons Fruit lling to ll your recipe needs. That should be equally interesting. Our Bontea Mix is made of quality tea leaves and unique fruit infusion, this instant fruit tea can freshen you either straight up or with bits of fresh fruit added to it. Lemon if you prefer a hint of sourness. Peach if you nd its sweetness irresistible.

And apple is simply cool and inviting. Just stir the mix in cold water and there you have it. Just stock a few out of the two dozens choices, Torani syrups can give your drinks new and exciting avors with minimal effort, whether we are talking about Italian sodas, smoothies or even coffee. One other product you cannot miss is the Bontea Signature with familiar avors like Darjeeling, Earl Grey and English Breakfast. For health-conscious tea drinkers, we have mint tea that helps with headaches and jasmine green tea which is rich with anti-oxidants. Rounding up the offering is rooibos tea. This red tea is different from other teas in that it is free of caffeine, making it the natural choice for anyone who wish to avoid it. As you can see, Boncafe is not only good for coffee. We have a range of select products to save you valuable time and resources. The good health is also a plus. So if you are looking for new and innovative ingredients for drinks, visit Boncafe Phuket today and you surely will be able to shop for impressive products at great value.

Beauties..

of the monsoon season in the Phuket region Just one word, ‘monsoon’, makes people forget about beachfront vacations. But it does attract a few – those who understand the full realities of this neglected time of year: that during the rainy season there are not so many days of rain; that during the monsoon season all of Thailand turns lush and green; that this time of year can be the coolest, quietest and most relaxing of all; that there are few tourists in the resorts; that prices are down, service is up and that there is a whole range of other things to do and enjoy.

Here are some of the delights of the monsoon season in Phuket and along Thailand’s Andaman coast. • COOLER WEATHER Following the hot-hot, near-breathless months of March and April that have all of Thailand gasping for breath, the cooling off that the monsoon brings is welcomed across the land. September is the coolest month of the year on southern beaches, the result of heavier cloud cover and cool ocean winds. • FEWER PEOPLE, BETTER SERVICE Some people hate crowds. At this time of year it so much easier to have things to yourself, your way. Low season means fewer people and better service – often at a cheaper rates – in restaurants, markets and other service establishments. • CATCH A BARGAIN – THEY’RE EVERYWHERE With hotels emptying during the May - October rainy season, room rates plunge along beaches across the country. Andaman destinations offer especially good bargains, for this coast takes more effect from the southwest winds than the Gulf islands. www.theguidephuket.com

• FEWER PEOPLE, A BEACH TO YOURSELF A beach to oneself is a dream that many people hold, but few realize. It represents romantic tranquillity and perfect isolation. During the monsoon months there is no trouble nding a beach to oneself along the Andaman coast, even on a popular tourist island like Phuket. • SPECTACLES OF NATURE The electric power of the natural world is on full display during the monsoon season, particularly during the early months of May and June. The skies display roiling changes as dark clouds churn across the skies, breaking light into shafts and allowing some to re through like beams from a giant’s ashlight. Rainbows point to pots of gold all across the land. By late afternoon towering thunderheads come alive, ring lightning bolts and claps of thunder as if the gods were at war within. • PHOTOGRAPHY – CATCH THOSE BLUE BREAKS If you love photography, you should love the early months of the monsoon season with the towering thunderheads and electrical storms that are so common then. These provide backgrounds of beauty and visual power. However, through the entire monsoon there are regular breaks as the southwest winds die down and blue skies break out all over. For most photography, these are the ideal conditions.

• BOATING IN THE PROTECTED WATERS OF PHANG NGA BAY The Andaman region is blessed through all 12 months of the year by Phang Nga Bay. This calm body of water is perfectly protected from wind and waves no matter how big or from which direction they come. This spectacular bay of vertical, rocky monoliths lies directly to the back of Phuket, which forms the western barrier that keeps it mill-pond calm through the monsoon season. • DRIVING TOURS THROUGH A LUSH, GREEN COUNTRYSIDE Want to see and experience the real Thailand? You might nd some of the best beaches in Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi and Koh Lanta, but it’s dif cult to nd that authentic ‘Thai’ experience in these famous tourist destinations. However, a rental car, a tank of fuel and a map can take you just a few kilometres up the local highway and deliver you to the real Thailand. • THE RAIN FORESTS ‘BLOSSOM’ AT THIS TIME OF YEAR Want to see the rainforests of the Andaman at their best? The rainy season is the time when nature blooms, not with owers, but with new life in myriad forms. Though the world is fast running out of untouched rainforests, and Thailand has destroyed most of its own, there are still some outstanding examples close to Phuket. Khao Sok is largest forested area in the region, and two- or 3-hour drive to the North. • BEACH FUN OF A DIFFERENT KIND Many visitors love the waves thrown up during the monsoon season. This is not a season for inexperienced swimmers to jump in, and sometimes weak swimming do get into danger in rip currents. However, the numbers who enjoy the monsoon season waves without incident is testimony the fact that body sur ng, or just playing in the waves, is a very popular activity indeed. Photos and story by.. Andaman

GETTING TO KNOW

the Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta

as it could actually be classi ed as a mud at, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high dif cult rating. Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local shermen leave offerings for good fortune.

Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, sh, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with majestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area
