t e k u h P The Pearl of the Andaman

What comes into the mind of travelers when they start to think about sea, sun and sand? Phuket is increasingly one of the answers to this…. and for good reason as the island offers warm tropical ocean, beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and a multitude of opportunities for exciting and fun activities. Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, is located 862 kilometers south of Bangkok. Often called the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’, or ‘Pearl of the South’, its natural resources; rocky peninsulas, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical in-land forests contribute to making it southern Thailand’s wealthiest, busiest, most visited and most popular island and province. Nestled in the tropical zone off the west coast of southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean, the province covers an area of approximately 543 square kilometers (excluding small islets). It is estimated that Phuket Province covers an area of approximately 590 square kilometers if its 39 other small islands are included. The island’s total length, from north to south, is estimated at 48.7 kilometers and it is approximately 21.3 kilometers wide. Phuket borders with Phang-Nga province to the north; connected by the Sarasin Bridge. The remainder of the island is encircled by the Andaman Sea; an area which is home to many of the best diving sites in the country. Staying on the island is easy, as there are only two seasons in the year - the rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The low season of Phuket is between September and October as these are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November to February, when it is possible to see the clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breezes and marvel at the crystal clear waters while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches. Average temperatures ranges between 23°C and 33°C. www.theguidephuket.com

Phuket’s topology is exceptional with 70 percent of its area covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. The island does not have any ma jor rivers, but has nine smaller brooks and creeks. Phuket has a lot more to offer than just its natural beauty. Sino-Portuguese architecture casts its spell delighting travelers to Phuket Town, while Phuket-style hospitality never fails to impress visitors from all walks of life. In addition, accommodation ranging from world-class resorts to tropicalstyle bungalows caters to the different needs of travelers. For seafood lovers, there is so much choice including Phuket’s famous lobster. Altogether, these characteristics make Phuket a truly unique destination.

Activities

s e i t i v i t c A on the Island It’s a big island, offering all manner of things to do. It’s surprising that so many holiday makers, who are trying to get away from it all, soon get bored with that dreamy combination of a perfect beach, a comfortable hotel room and great food. After a few days, most people want more. They want to go places, to see how the local people live and to experience new things. Happily with Phuket being a large island, about 50 kilometers long, there are all sorts of interesting things to do here. Below we offer some suggestion. • Crowned Beach, Quiet Beach Find the one that suits you spend most of your holiday in Patong and you might think the beaches of Phuket are crowned. While Patong buzzes with people and activity, there are many other beaches to which one can escape in complete solitude. You just have to drive. As one moves away from patong the beaches become progressively quieter. By the time you get to the top of the island you’re guaranteed kilometers of sand to yourself, even in peak season, so remember crowned beach, quiet beach; the choice is there. • Visiting Wats – Buddhist Monasteries All Buddhist Monasteries are open to the public during the day, and visitors are usually welcome. Since these are active holy places of worship, and the residence of monks, visitors should show respecting keeping well dressed and remaining quiet, Mum and Dad; keep the kids on a leash and always be culturally sensitive. • Elephant Trekking The wild elephant population of Phuket was wiped out last century, but has been replaced in recent years by and influx of animals for the tourist trade. Today there remains just a few hundred elephants on Phuket Island, all domesticated, most working in tourism. Indeed, riding an elephant is an experience not to be missed. The lumbering monsters are incredibly agile. Taking an elephant ride helps to keep the beasts employed, fed and out of the cities, where many can be taken by destitute owners in search of money and food. • Phuket Town Phuket Town is small but incredibly interesting, a potpourri of different cultural influences of markets and shopping centers, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. Anyone spending a few days on Phuket Island should take time to visit, be it for sight-seeing, cultural or historical interest or shopping. • Zoo Phuket’s only zoo is small, but pleasant, displaying some of Thailand’s almost vanished wildlife. Their tigers are fed well enough that one can sit with them and have a photo taken. We recommend going early or late, to avoid the tour buses that arrive mid morning and mid afternoon. It is in a small road off the east side of Chao Fah East Road, about half way between the town and Chalong’s 5-way intersection. The turnoff is well signposted and easy to find. www.theguidephuket.com

• Cultural Village Cultural shows featuring skilled Thai dancers from the different regions of the country, martial arts demonstrations, elephant rides and Thai dinners are all brought together at Phuket’s original cultural garden; there is also attached orchid farm for all the budding botanists out there. • Bungy Jump Consider yourself adventurous? Got real guts? If you haven’t tried bungee jump yet, you should take the ride to the top with a big rubber band around your ankles and fight the internal struggle that every jumper meets when standing 54 meters above the ground. Logic might tell us it is quite safe, but another part of our body screams “No! Don’t jump!” But with their friends at the bottom, waiting expectantly, most people manage to throw themselves off and experience a rush like no other. • Jungle Trekking With most of rainforest on Phuket long since eaten up by rubber plantations, it is not easy to find ideal trekking grounds. Again, it’s best to sign on with company providing this service. Often they take their trekkers right off Phuket into neighbouring Phang Nga province, where some beautiful areas of forest remain. • Spas Massage and herbal steam rooms Health resorts, spas and herbal saunas are proliferating, and some fine example offering a wide range of treatments are now found on Phuket. Thailand has its own traditional herbal saunas, and there are several local ones around the island. While many large and resorts now feel they are incomplete without a spa, there are also several independent establishments. • View Points Phuklet’s most famous view point, Laem Phrom Thep at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor to the island. Thus it attracts a fleet of tour busses and car each evening as people come to witness the sun fall into the Andaman Sea. Indeed, it’s often a spectacular sight, but there are many quieter places. The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people and when the heavens turn red, the view from any of the beaches can also be spectacular.

Lifestyle

Life’s a Beach With a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available. ach

Nai Yang Be

Bang Tao Beach

· Mai Khao Beach North of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning plus it’s almost empty! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are five deep on Patong.

· Nai Yang Beach Just south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.

· Nai Thon Beach A little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possessinga similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favorite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a fine strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach.

www.theguidephuket.com

· Layan Beach This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim it’s not the place to go.

· Bang Tao Beach Bang Tao Beach has in recent years seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong currents. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.

Lifestyle

· Surin Beach Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with fine white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsurfing. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.

Patong Beach

· Laem Singh Beach Laem Singh Beach is small and very popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning.

· Kamala Beach Kamala is a 3-kilometer long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast which has undergone recent developments to its main street, but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a growing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range.

· Patong Beach The most famous beach on the island is the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colorful and lively mix that typifies a Thai tourist beach town.

Lifestyle

· Paradise Beach Paradise Beach is a little beach just 5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and largerocks flanking either side.

Karon Beach

· Karon Beach Karon is another of the beautiful, west-coast beaches that have made Phuket famous. This beach is the first main stop south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland. A quick 10 minute drive connects the two.

· Kata Beach Kata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral offers excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.

· Kata Noi Beach Just south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for snorkeling as many fish inhabit the rocks and corals along the headland to the south.

Nai Harn is one of the more isolated beaches, nestled at the southern tip of the island in a bay defined by headlands and isl ets. The beach is backed by the green of Casuarina trees and coconut palms, acting as shade for the restaurantsthat now line the beach.

路 Ao Yon Beach Ao Yon is another peaceful beach ideally suited for watchingthe sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket Town. Although quiet with beautiful emerald sea this beach is not really suitable for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts.

GETTING TO KNOW...

Mario Rossi Owner of Rossovivo Restaurant

Mario Rossi, the energetic owner of Rossovivo Italian Restaurant in Chalong grew up in one of Italy’s foremost restaurant-owning families and has amazing experience and credentials. Little wonder that Rossovivo is becoming known as one of the finest restaurants in Phuket. What Background do you bring to running hotels and restaurants? I was born in 1972 and grew up in a famous Italian restaurantowning family. My parents owned “Il Giardinetto” one of the best known and highly awarded restaurants in the Como region of Lombardia. Being immersed in this culture I gravitated towards hospitality as a career and attended the famous Bellaggio School in Como, one of Italy’s best known hotel schools. Upon graduation I went on to work at the Hilton in London, then from 2001 onwards at the world famous Villa D’Este Hotel on Lake Como as Chef de Rang. I also worked at the Palace in St. Moritz before my mother suggested that we go it alone again. We launched three restaurants after that plus a wine cellar in Cernobbio Moltrasio which achieved great success. We had as customers such visiting stars as George Clooney and Jon Bon Jovi and we also catered for them in their villas. How did you come to open a restaurant in Phuket? I first came on holiday to Phuket in 1996 and fell in love with it like so many others! I also fell in love with my Thai partner and started splitting my time between Como and Phuket, but decided to move here in 2008. I launched La Dolce Vita restaurant in Patong which became the highest rated Italian restaurant in Phuket on Trip Advisor. After my daughter was born in 2011, I decided to make my permanent home and bought a house in Rawai. Eventually I sold most of my shares in La Dolce Vita and subsequently took over Rossovivo in October 2014 in the charming Fisherman Way Gardens, next to Makro in Chalong. What is your vision for Rossovivo? I’ve brought in my friend Guido Orben to be the Head Chef. He has a global reputation as an extremely fine Italian Chef having won many awards and written the definitive book about Italian food in Japan where he worked for many

years. Together we have boosted the quality of the cuisine we offer, plus introduced good value business lunches for just 290 baht including a beverage. Also we now offer many daily specials to keep the basic menu fresh, featuring the best seasonal produce and ingredients and we have introduced ongoing promotions such as our recent “Taste of Veneto” menus. Everything we serve is fresh, healthy and prepared with style. All our pasta is home-made; the pizzas are prepared in a wood-fired oven and all the cheeses are imported from Italy So what’s the Rossovivo Experience? As we have a lovely indoor/outdoor setting overlooking the fountain and gardens at Fisherman Way, we make the most of our relaxed and friendly setting to give our customers not only fine authentic Italian cuisine, but an exceptionally genuine experience. We want people to have a good time so we serve big glasses of good Italian wine for just 130 baht or bottles starting from 990 baht. Our staff is friendly and attractive and we have the pleasure of welcoming many customers back on a regular basis. “We are delighted to launch our new Laguna Café just in time to celebrate our 27 years in business. We are confident that resort guests and Phuket residents alike will thoroughly enjoy what is on offer. The new Laguna Café is charming and welcoming with something for every taste, and the service is exceptional and efficient,” said Mr Denis Thouvard, the Dusit’s General Manager.

An open show kitchen adds a fun, interactive element to the large welcoming space, which also encompasses an extensive al fresco dining area with views across the huge swimming pool and lush tropical gardens, which can now accommodate

The Laguna Café’s menu includes such delights as salads like prawn Panzanella with jalapeno dressing, red onions and avocado dressing; Asian-inspired pasta for example Tagliatelle with Asian-style braised duck, star anise, cinnamon and wok fired vegetables and a fine array of soups such as Bourride, a Provencal fish with fennel saffron and tomatoes served with bread croutons and rouille. The there are also Portuguese dishes such as Galinha - an Africana grilled baby chicken “en crapaudine” marinated in piri piri paste and coconut milk and Chinese dishes like wok-fried sweet and sour prawns with sweet and sour sauce. Finally, for dessert, it is very hard to go past the Portuguese pastei de nata, a mouth-watering custard cream tartlet and don’t forget a scoop or two of the specially made ice creams - Vanilla Dream, Swiss Chocolate, Maple Walnut, Caramelita, Tiramisu, Strawberry, Passion fruit and Mango, Raspberry and Strawberry to leave you smiling and replete! Sunday

is for family!

There are things in this world that don’t go well together. Socks and sandals or hairdryers and bathtubs spring to mind. But if we were to look closer, right here in Phuket, I’d go for Sunday Brunches and children. The island’s favorite meal and the little ones are simply not meant for each other. Or rather, weren’t, until Thanyapura introduced its latest Sunday Brunch offering – the Family Fun Brunch. From now on, Sundays are for the whole family!

There’s no lack of Sunday brunches on offer in Phuket; in fact the island seems to be the nation’s capital for this kind of meal, with just about every big hotel and resort offering something in that category. The problem with many, if not most though, is that while the food is great and atmosphere pleasant, they are not exactly children friendly events. And there are few people out there who deserve a great Sunday brunch more, than parents of small children. Having spent most of the week working hard at their day job and taking care of kids at home, they simply deserve a break. Thanks to Thanyapura, this break is possible and with their children around. Running every Sunday between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm at the DiVine restaurant, Thanyapura Fun Family Brunch is exactly what the name implies – heaps of family fun accompanied by great food. The menu at DiVine deserves great applause, and for its Sunday brunch, the restaurant rolls out the big guns – succulent meats at the heated carving station, BBQ section, fresh seafood, the best of Japanese, Thai and western dishes not to mention an array of cheeses and desserts. It’s as good as it gets. And it get’s even better when you know, that your children will enjoy it too. A dedicated buffet for children will keep your little ones well nourished while they indulge in a number of activities that include cooking classes (playing with food, yay!) as well as games at the pool. Don’t be surprised when you find yourself spending as much time at the table, as with your children in the play zone. That’s if you feel like it. If you’d rather stay 100% focused on food, your kids can play at the Kids’ Zone while you go www.theguidephuket.com

from smoked salmon to feather-light panna cotta. And if the 100% focus on food results in overeating – a risk that always comes with all-you-can eat Sunday Brunches – the special Day Pass which is included in the brunch’s price, will come in handy – valid for one week after the brunch it gives you access to Thanyapura sport facilities such a pools, gyms and one hour on the tennis courts. Great food makes great meals. Great chefs make great food. Great, fresh produce, attentive waiters, pleasant ambiance – it all matters, but nothing makes a meal great, like great company does. At Thanyapura Fun Family Brunch, you’ll eat in the company of your loved ones, after all, that’s what Sundays are for! Thanyapura Fun Family Brunch at DiVine restaurant costs THB1,290++ per person. Wine Buffet at THB 890++ per person. Children from 4 to 11 years old - THB645++ per child. Live duo band available. Aziamendi Spells Culinary Magic Exoticall y-named “Aziamendi” is the fabulous restaurant at Iniala super-luxury villas cited on the shores of Natai Beach, about 20 minutes north of Phuket airport. It’s the creation of world famous Basque Chef Eneko Atxa, the youngest Spanish chef ever to win three Michelin Stars. Chef Eneko works at Iniala for three months each year and Chef Alex Burger (ex Daniel Boulud in New York) work with Sommelier Fabien Etienne and Mixologist Albert Garcia Mozley to weave a brand of culinary magic that is without peer in Phuket. Not content with producing their brilliant creative magic at home in Iniala, Aziamendi have initiated the idea of “Pop Up” events, taking their culinary brilliance on the road to various venues around Phuket. It was to their amazing gastronomic extravaganza that we ventured last month at the Black Salmon restaurant and delicatessen across the road from Boat Avenue in Cherngtalay. The evening started with cooling glasses of Prosecco and introductions to the team and other guests. We were then led outside and presented with the opening magical trick, three stunningly tasty morsels delicately placed inside a picnic box. These sensory taste bombs were an anchovy and foie gras mille feuille followed by a pastry airbag of cured pork and avocado cream and then a sweet bomb indeed…. a mojito in a chocolate bon bon! The creative panache of this opening gustatory salvo set the tone for the rest of the evening. This was going to be a night of superb serendipity, gormandizing par excellence and well….MAGIC!

www.theguidephuket.com

Not to be outdone by this initial creative thrust we were then presented with a Bonsai Tree from which we were encouraged to pluck a tomato infused the lemon and raspberry comfit and then savor the tree’s deliciously edible “bark” – actually a magical incarnation of fried artichoke.

A truffle egg nestled silently in its presentation spoon was another alarming act. But no simple egg this! It was a fresh organic Khao Lak egg, sourced daily and had been cooked from the inside with an infusion of hot truffle oil and sported a crown of fresh black French truffle shavings. Devour in one mouthful was the instruction given, and indeed another sensational taste bomb was released into our by now reeling mouths. The magic went on with Aziamendi’s signature dish of foie gras “ashes” scattered upon black crisp bread and magicall y paired with a sweet Bordeaux Caprice de Bastor Sauternes. Bite then sip we were told and Ahhhhh!! This was a piece of wine pairing magic from Sommelier Fabien and totally symptomatic of his almost uncanny ability to match cuisine to wine throughout the evening. I could go on but word count and my creative ineptitude challenge me to do justice to this evening’s magic within the confines of this article. I can only encourage you to visit Aziamendi yourself to discover that such a magical culinary experience is worth far more than a thousand words. Or look out for their next event at Aziamendi Restaurant on Valentine’s Night. ! s u lo u – B A R C y el ut Absol The Crab House in Patong not only boasts the biggest crabs in Phuket, they cook and serve them in the most delicious and fun-Àlled ways.

The recently-opened Crab House is situated on Phangmeung Road in Patong running parallel to both Beach and Rat-U-Thit Roads behind the Jungcelyon Shopping Center. If you walk along this wide boulevard, you don’t really need to worry about remembering the address, as Crab House announces itself to all passers-by through the presence of a HUGE ORANGE CRAB which rears up above its welcoming portals. You just can’t miss it!! Walking into the friendl y vibe of Crab House you’ll immediately be impressed by the big bubbling tanks of fresh crustaceans arranged around the walls and on the floor. The helpful staff with make sure you have a cold beer, or a glass of wine from the cozy bar and then introduce you to some of the be-clawed denizens of this flamboyant eatery. There are huge mud crabs that weigh in at up to two kilos, each with their fearsome-looking claws hand-tied with red restrainers. These come from a secret location outside Phuket and are absolutely the biggest crabs you will find anywhere on the island. There are also Blue crabs, as well as lobsters, prawns and all the other key ingredients of lip-smackingly good seafood meals, but it’s the heavyweight mud crabs that are the stars of this superb culinary show. Crab House is the brain child of the highly enthusiastic owner/manager Narapong Phoneam (Bia) who is usually on hand to guide both those new to the delights of crabmunching, as well as hardened crab-enthusiasts, in their menu selection. www.theguidephuket.com

Khun Bia recently returned from owning and running a highly successful restaurant in England and certainly knows how to run a well-managed and friendly house of gastronomy. When he returned from England, Khun Bia decided to launch a new and different experience in Phuket dining. He was searching for something the island did not yet offer and eventually alighted on the idea of The Crab House which he launched last September. Crab-crunching at Crab House doesn’t just involve the enjoyment of a sensational meal, but is a full-on experience involving protective bibs, crab crushers, pliers and special implements for extracting super juicy remnants of crab meat from the dark recesses of shell, carapace and claw. In fact true crab lovers throw themselves into this ritual of eating and getting to all the tasty morsels with great enthusiasm. But if you’re a newbie to the delights of crab crushing, go for the very tasty crab and sweet corn soup, or soft-shelled crabs which are just as delicious as the finicky mud crabs, but much easier to devour! Crab House also serves a full selection of delicious Thai dishes, rice, noodles, veggies etc with which to complement the happy consumption of crabs. Plus there’s wine by the glass and bottle, cocktails and refreshing cold beers all at very reasonable prices to enhance the delights of crab crunching. So don’t be shy. Strap on your Crab House bib and dive into the fun and flying crab claw and carapace as you savor the delights of Phuket’s absolutely CRAB-ulous Crab House! Art Hiranyakas, M.D., FRCST., FRCFPT., FICS. Director of the Bangkok-Phuket Colorectal Disease Institute Member of the American Society of Colon and Rectum Surgeons (ASCRS)

A quantum leap in colorectal-disease care, shining new hope across the horizons Phuket’s medical-tourism landscape has achieved yet another milestone. The Bangkok-Phuket Colorectal Disease Institute opened its doors to hope in January 2014. It has finally turned the island into a world-class destination for state-of-the-art medical services relating to colorectal disease. Fully developed as one of Bangkok Hospital Phuket’s cornerstones, the institute has considerably added to the hospital’s allure and relentless pursuit of becoming one of the world’s “Medical Centers of Choice” offering comprehensive healthcare up to or even beyond tertiary thresholds. Bangkok Hospital Phuket is under the aegis of the fastest-growing Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMS) group, the second largest hospital network in Asia-Pacific and among the world’s top five. In response to the increasing incidence of colorectal disease worldwide, the Bangkok-Phuket Colorectal Disease Institute has been established to reverse the grim course of today’s cancer-prone generations. Here, we have collected all the world’s crème de la crème of specialist doctors and medical technologies to cater to all the intricate needs of any single patient, as well as to deliver the most effective treatment. Therefore, this medical advancement is not only felt locally, but even the most discerning clients also travel from all corners of the globe to receive healthcare of a lifetime here, with our service scope addressing benign, malignant colon and rectal conditions, through to functional disorders: colorectal and anal cancer, hemorrhoids, anal fissure, perianal abscess, fistula-in-ano,inflammatory bowel disease, constipation and bowel incontinence. www.theguidephuket.com

Furthermore, our institute has consistently reached out to local communities in Phuket. The most obvious and successful move is exemplified by the hosting of “Afternoon Tea” sessions, in which Dr. Art Hiranyakas sheds light on interesting health topics relating to healthy habits and ways to avoid colorectal disease. This involves a lively and enriching talk and participation with our passionate yet easygoing doctor. He also actively joins and volunteers as guest speaker for various occasions held by noteworthy local associations, including Lions Clubs, International Business Association of Phuket (IBAP), Rotary Clubs. Regarded as an academic wellspring pertaining to colorectal disease, the institute pursues ongoing researches, surgical innovations and training programs for colorectal surgeons/ specialists both from Thailand and abroad. The upcoming grand event is the Second Colorectal Disease Symposium on 5 - 7 December 2015. In conclusion, it can be unmistakably stated that the Bangkok-Phuket Colorectal Disease Institute is one of the world’s most trustworthy and competent destinations for colorectal-disease care. And it is no surprise that it is always the one who blazes a trail with such medical breakthroughs as the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, Transanal Haemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD), InterStim Bowel Control Therapy, to name a few.

New Year New You at a True Heaven of Relaxation… I believe everyone had a wonderful time with friends and family during the past festive season – Christmas and New Year, where of course it was a case of – “party, party and party”. But after all that fun, you may be feeling rather jaded and your face might look ten years older after all the late night celebrating – just like me. My favorite way of refreshing my mind and body is to get pampered at a spa, and this time I opted for a full-service spa complex called ‘De Flora Spa’ which opened a year ago in Phuket’s most popular area - Patong. www.theguidephuket.com

This stand-alone four story building on Rat-Uthit road, not far from Jungceylon Shopping Mall features a full spa treatment and beauty service that offers all kinds of treatment to make a new you. You can spend time relaxing with spa treatments; any type of massage; body and facial treatments; beauty pampering and hair salon; pedicure/manicure; or even hair waxing and body art tattooing, as well as more complex beauty treatments for which the Spa collaborates with Siam International Clinic – one of Thailand’s medical service leaders to provide all what you want for your beauty. Today I just wanted to refresh myself to be ready for my coming year, so I choose the 3-hours treatment ‘Perfect Life’ package. This is a full package that was recently introduced to please those who want to spend long hours getting truly relaxed in the Spa. De Flora Spa Manger tells me that the Spa also customizes packages to meet clients’ desires such as sauna, steam room or Jacuzzi bath combined with other body and facial treatments After a quick inspection, I learned that this complex serves all client’s needs in term of spa/massage and beauty treatments – Thai massage area, foot massage chairs, facial massage zone and Thai-oil massage beds, where every area has a clean and quiet ambiance.

I am taken to the VIP room to experience my ‘Perfect Life’ treatment where my therapist is waiting. I change into a bathrobe and lie on my stomach. My therapist applies the body scrubbing cream made from jasmine rice combined with other ingredients that help nourish my skin. She rubs slowly through my body and massages softly which make me fall asleep. After about an hour, my therapist finishes her first step of the treatment. I wash the scrubbing cream out from my body, noticing that my skin is soother and brighter…..wow, how nice! Now it’s time for aroma therapy oil massage, my favorite step. I always like being massaged around my back and shoulders as my muscles are getting more and more tense due to office work. As this treatment package takes quite a long period to complete, after the body oil massage I am then served a snack. Sliced pineapple and watermelon with hot tea are served, before the last step. Collagen mask facial massage is the last treatment to come. My face is gentl y cleaned by a special facial scrub cream, removing all dirty scurf and small pimples, then my therapist applies collagen mask cream onto my face. I don’t know how long this step takes as I fall asleep again, but I just know that after it, I see a glowing new lady in the mirror and ….it’s me! De Flora Spa opens daily from 10.00 am till midnight. Prior booking is recommended. PATONG BEACH Jungceylon Located centrally in Patong Beach is the newest addition to the growing trend of shopping malls in Phuket. ‘Jungceylong’ was the old name for Phuket when it was still a prosperous port town and tradingin the region was at its peak. This shopping mall retains a lot of the old history of Phuket in its architecture and style and is a joy to visit for this alone. The choice of goods is world-class, comprising space well over 300 shops with ample car parking space, restaurants, bars, cinema and bowling alley along with everything else you could possibly need for a busy day shopping. Banana Walk The area’s newest shopping centre is located just 100 metres south of Soi Bangla on the beach road, right next to Banana Disco. The mall is multilevel (three floors) and its overall design leans toward minimaland modernistic, at night the lighting, ranging fromblue to red, gives Banana Walk the feeling of entering a spaceship dock in a science fiction movie. Shopping, dining and cosmetics are the three main thrusts of this complex in which you can find almost anything to eat, drink, or buy. You even can improve your well-being at a spa or make yourself even more beautiful at an aesthetic centre or at the onsite hairdresser. KATA & KARON BEACH Kata Plaza Nowadays there are in fact two distinct shopping malls with a bazaar-like feel to them, both are located close to the Kata Palace Hotel and Club Med along Kata Road which runs parallel to Kata Beach Road. The newer of the two is flanked by tailor shops, a pharmacy, and a cozy fan-cooled café along with a minimart and the inevitable optician’s shop. The two-lane plaza really is a one-stop destination for all your holiday souvenirs. Karon Bazaar A large, covered market-like shopping centre set in the central area of Karon Beach Road, right between Woraburi Phuket and Moenvenpick Resorts. The bazaar features just about everything you’ll ever need. Karon Bazaar is a smaller beachsideversion of the famous Phuket Weekend Market in Phuket Town. There are also watch and jewelry counters here. It’s literally possible to spend a full day here - shopping, catching the latest movies, and dining out at the range of international restaurants that offer everything from French cuisine to Japanese to local Thai outlets. Phuket Weekend Market The Jatujak (or JJ) weekend market in Bangkok is world famous but few people realize that there is an equally good alternative here in Phuket, albeit on a smaller scale. Situated opposite the Naka Temple (which is also worth a visit) outside of Phuket Town, just 5 minutes from Central Festival on the Chao Fa West Road lies Phuket’s equivalent to Bangkok’s JJ Market. Here you will find all manner of things for sale from seemingly useless second-hand household junk and cute little trinkets to garden ornaments, clothing and ideal presents for all your friends and family. There is also an abundance of food and drink stalls to keep the energy levels up whilst you wander around.

Transport

Transport on the island How much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways. To and from the airport Airport transfers are relatively simple. The airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibuses are available to get to the ma jor beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National have offices located in the airport. ‘Tuk-Tuks’ If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck converted in the manner of the bigger song-taews mentioned above to carry about four (or more!) passengers.

The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are fleets of these in all ma jor tourist areas and they will take you anywhere for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself. Motorcycle Taxis These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking, way to get around. All fares must be negotiated before the ride. These taxi motor cycle drivers are easily identified by their special colored jackets showing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets. Renting a Motorcycle Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but do be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand, with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times and all riders to wear helmets. Also motor cycle lights must be turned on at all times, including during the daytime! The police occasionally enforce all these laws, so beware. The real danger in Phuket is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. Renting Your Own Car Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are readily found in every beach area and ma jor rental companies operate in most resorts. When renting private vehicles from the side of the road be aware that few of these vehicles have insurance and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out. Regional Buses The long distance bus station is in Phuket Town is directly across from here both air-con tour buses and cheap, ‘orange crush’ buses leave for destinations north, south and east. There are regular services to Bangkok, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakorn Srithammarat, Trang, Haad Yai and other minor provincial capitals.

Transport by Boat Regular ferry boat services from Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are unscheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi. Song-taews There are few buses on Phuket and the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colorful with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every ma jor beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise slowly around the streets picking up passengers. Song-taews are slow but cheap with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

Andaman

GETTING TO KNOW the Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta

as it could actually be classified as a mud flat, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high difficult rating. Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local fishermen leave offerings for good fortune.

Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, fish, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and ma jestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with ma jestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area www.theguidephuket.com

Klong Muang Beach/Tubkaak Krabi’s latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming. The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located. The Phi Phi Islands Known for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as ma jor “party islands.” Poda Islands Situated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for fishing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful fish.

HIGHLIGHT ATTRACTIONS.. Emerald Pool Emerald Pool or Sra Morakot in Thai is located at Klong Thom District. This hot spring originates from a warm stream in the lowland forest. The intensity of the pool’s turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so a good time to visit is at dawn or early morning.

Bird Watching A trip to Krabi can be a very rewarding visit for any bird lovers. With easily accessible mangroves and low lying forests, there are many places to spot rare birds. Two excellent locations are Khao Kanat Nam, close to Krabi Town, and Khao No Chuchi Forest Preserve.

Tiger Cave Temple Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua in Thai is located about 3 kilometers from Krabi town. The inside of this cave features tiger prints captured in stone and is in the middle of an abundant forest with gigantic ancient trees. This place is remarkable archaeologically as many artifacts have been found on the premises including tools, pottery and the mold for the Buddha’s footprint.

Partying Phi Phi is known worldwide as “Party Island central” and Koh Lanta is not far behind. Krabi Town is more sedate, but there are plenty of good bars and a live music scene to enjoy.

HIGHLIGHTS & ACTIVITIES... Rock Climbing Apart from marine sports, Krabi is also an ideal place for rock climbing. Lines of sheer limestone cliffs along Tham Phranang and Rai Le Beaches have challenged thousands of climbers from all over the world every year. The levels of difficulty of the various routes vary, so Whether you’re a professional or just an aspiring adrenalin junkie, the craggy karsts of Krabi offer a huge array of bolted mounts. Diving Both scuba and snorkeling are widely available in warm, coral and fish infested waters with full PADI accreditation courses and live-aboard adventures. Don’t let that big one get away!

Shopping Outlet Village Krabi is located on Phetchakasem Road. It is on the way from the city to the local airport and features a tall lighthouse near the entrance and 6,000 sqm of retail space. Throughout the year, many Thai and foreign travelers visit this outlet which offers over 100 selected leading brands for all ages. Clothing discounted up to 70% is available here. It is open daily from 11:00 a.m. - 9.00 p.m. Enjoying the Local Seafood Have a seafood feast and savor the fresh day’s catch in any number of a fun, laidback, or fine-dining restaurants all over this region.

Renting a car is also a good option and the roads are wide, modern and relatively quiet. To Krabi and Phi Phi by boat It is possible to charter a speedboat or similar transportation to Krabi or Koh Phi Phi, or there are frequent daily ferries operating between Phuket and Phi Phi Island and then on to Krabi, or via the Koh Yao Islands, each taking about two hours.
