Me Tarzan….You Thrilled! A new totally thrilling jungle treetop adventure has arrived high in the verdant treetops of the hills above Cape Panwa. Strapping on our tiger-skin leotards and curling a handy vine around our waists we headed over to Tarzan Adventure to discover what it was all about. Tarzan (the Apeman) was a Àctional character who through circumstances beyond his control was raised in the African jungles by the great apes living there. He later experienced civilization only to largely reject it and return to the wild as a heroic adventurer, the idealized “noble savage”. It’s a romantic scenario with which many of us in our frazzled and mundane lives can empathize. Well now you have every chance to be that noble savage swinging in the arboreal splendor high above mere mortals in Phuket at the recently-opened Tarzan Jungle Adventure at the top of the hills of Cape Panwa to the south of Phuket Town. Actually getting to Tarzan Adventure involves something of an adventure itself as a bumpy dirt road runs up the steep hillside off the coast road running along Cape Panwa’s west coast. Once you breast the summit you’ll Ànd yourself, appropriately enough, in a rustic wooden hut that serves as the welcoming ofÀce of Tarzan Adventure. Looking around your breath will be taken away by the stunning views across Chalong Bay to Lon Island and the steep mountainous spine of Phuket Island beyond, with the Big Buddha atop Nakkert Hills silently contemplating it all. The Tarzan staff are friendly, efÀcient and well trained and show you how to strap into your harness and how to use the safety lines giving you a trial run of every maneuver on the ground before you take to the treetops to enjoy the 42 aerial stations for the next two hours of primordial simian fun, fun, fun! The course involves a challenging array of obstacles, bridges, ladders platforms, climbing walls and believe it or not…. a tree-to-tree skateboard! Three staff members assist every group and so even youngsters can enjoy the treetop thrills, providing they are at least 130 cm tall.

The Ànale of the adventure comes in the adrenalin-inducing form of a 50 meter long zip line run, for your Ànal tandem swing to the Ànish. Back in the base shelter you’ll be plied with an abundance of cold towels, water and fresh fruit to help you re-energize for another round, which many budding Tarzans go on to enjoy. Tarzan Adventure Phuket is located on the west side of Cape Panwa and is well marked with signs off the Ao Yun Khao Khad Road. The cost is 2,900 baht per person including drinks, fruit platter and a souvenir. Minimum height is 130 centimeters and maximum weight is 120 kilograms. Friends and family who do not want to take to the treetops can enjoy walking amongst the verdant foliage taking pictures of the other more aerially acrobatic members of their group. Tarzan Adventure Phuket Ao-yon Khaokad Road, Wichit, Phuket 83000 Thailand Tel: 091 648 7244 Email: info@tarzan-adventure.com www.tarzan-adventure.com

The entire circuit will take the average moderately Àt Tarzan about two hours to enjoy and there are frequent stops where the staff help you rehydrate… a luxury which would have made Johnny Weissmuller, star of the Tarzan Àlms, green with envy!

Uniquely Thai, Distinctively Phuket Andaman Embrace Resort & Spa is a brilliant Phuket hotel that shines above the other accommodation choices on the island. Getting to know

Thomas Brack

Manager of 9th Floor Restaurant Patong As the doors of the elevator carrying you to the 9th Floor Restaurant open, you experience a sensation akin to entering a parallel universe. You walk into a cool elegant salon much like a European dining club, with lovely artworks, soft furnishings, sparkling glass, Áoor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Patong and an array of beautifullyattired waitresses welcoming you into this most stylish restaurant. Thomas Brack is the highly professional manager of 9th Floor and you might think he has the best job in the world. We paid him a visit to Ànd out!

We immediately focused strongly on marketing to build our name and customer base, but these days we get 80 percent repeat guests and they have been our greatest marketing channel through their Thomas Br ack recommendations and word-of-mouth. We also have an extensive and innovative wine cellar and charge only a fair price with a small mark up, so our wines are far less expensive than those of competitors in the top tier segment of the Phuket dining scene.

How did you come to be the Manager of the exceptional 9th Floor Restaurant? My background was in textiles and design, based in Zurich but I often visited Asia and Thailand as part of my job. I Àrst came to Phuket in 1982 and always enjoyed it, so when some friends invited me to come over in 1999 and open a restaurant at Try Trang Beach I decided to move here. After this, the owner of the Swiss Chalet Restaurant asked me to help manage his restaurant. It was a typical Swiss Style Restaurant and actually not my style. After two years, I realized that a totally new restaurant concept was needed and so with my partner I completely re-designed and re-launched the restaurant. I oversaw everything from design, to the furnishings, and the marketing. I worked out the menu and kitchen details with our Executive Chef Khun Wara and we launched the new 9th Floor Restaurant in November 2006.

And what’s the role of your famous waitresses – The 9th Floor Angels? We recruited our beautiful waitresses as an integral part of our brand from the beginning. We offered the girls a great salary, plus good tips and a real career structure through training, education and personal development. So, we have been able to retain our great staff and always have a huge number of applicants whenever we need to hire. We like it when the applicants have not much experience so that we can teach them our system without the resistance of previously held ideas. It’s a challenge working with so many beautiful women…but someone’s got to do it!!

What are the key factors that make 9th Floor so successful? The 9th Floor was full from day one as a result of the many contacts my partner and I had built up, plus the high quality of the Mediterranean and Swiss cuisine we served. We had a great kitchen team lead by Chef Wara Pakdeevirote who has stayed with us since launch and they have been responsible for the cuisine, fresh produce and the overall efÀciency of operation of the kitchen side of our business. www.theguidephuket.com

Food & Restaurant

A Divine Brunch at DiVine Thanyapura is the most extraordinary enterprise, rising like a mythic new Camelot, vast and white in the Phuket sunshine surrounded by abundant greenery in a quiet valley in northeastern Phuket. DiVine restaurant sits at the heart of the Thanyapura campus which comprises the Sports and Leisure Center; Sports Hotel; Phuket International Academy Day School and Thanyapura Mind Center.

restaurant is a luscious welcoming space decorated in natural woods and psychedelic Áower arrangements, with a huge and spotless central open kitchen and beguiling Pontillistic oils and acrylics decorating the colorful walls. It has extensive Áoor-to-ceiling windows which open out onto a large patio, where one can also dine, with deep blue Olympic sized swimming pools beyond.

Thanyapura’s philosophy can be characterized as a modern temple to the Greek philosopher Seneca’s idea of human perfection expressed as: “Mens sana in corpore sano”.....a healthy mind in a healthy body and Sunday brunch at DiVine seeks to exactly encapsulate this sentiment.

The brunch menu features a large array of high quality imported produce such as French oysters, lobsters, grilled seafood and Wagyu beef, not to mention fresh soups, salads, pre-mixed Àsh and meat courses and a sumptuous choice of homemade desserts, all of which conform to the healthy and organic ethos to varying degrees.

DiVine restaurant matches its physical and mental ideals with gustatory perfection featuring organic gourmet cuisine made from fresh, locally-farmed ingredients, often from Thanyapura’s own organic farm Thanyamundra located near Khao Sok National Park, and all certiÀed by the Thai Agricultural Department.

There is also a terriÀc array of healthy juices and “organic boosters” for the hard-core Ironmen, many of whom grace DiVine’s groaning brunching tables, or free-Áow wines and cocktails for the naughtier, mere mortals amongst us!

Perhaps the Àrst prejudice to dispel is that DiVine’s healthy organic brunch in any way equates with austerity or privation. In fact DiVine

If this were not enough, choosing to enjoy brunch at DiVine also entitles you a Free Full Day Pass to use in Thanyapura’s gymnasia, pools and resources including one hour use of a tennis court, or joining any of the ongoing group exercise classes. Clearly brunch at DiVine is an all day immersion in great health, relaxation and fabulous cuisine. Seneca would have been impressed! Sunday Buffet with free Áow non-alcohol drinks is THB 1,800*/Child THB 900* or buffet with free Áow selected beverages THB 2,150*/person. Don’t Just Dine.....

Locavore Instead!

Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort have refined mere resort eating into the fine art of dining upon locally sourced produce and organically grown vegetables, so that their guests not only enjoy terrific cuisine, but do themselves and the environment a whole lot of good. The recently-minted term “Locavore” came into being in 2007 and quickly gained a huge amount of media attention as an important new concept in dining. A “Locavore” is a person interested in eating food that is locally produced, not moved long distances to market and to the final customer. The Locavore movement was originally spawned in the US as interest in sustainability, eco-consciousness and health blossomed, then rapidly gained global traction. Now in Phuket, Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort is consciously working with local fishermen, growers and artisan producers to adopt the principles of the Locavore movement, bringing a little more sustainability and less environmental impact to our own dining scene. In cases where the required ingredients cannot be grown locally, the Resort sources them from locally based producers that process and use Thai products, or grows them themselves in their own vegetable gardens in their grounds. The Resort’s gardens produce a variety of vegetables to supplement what can be supplied that are totally untouched by chemicals and are guaranteed to be fresh, thereby fulfilling both the sustainability and health-giving elements of their commitment to the Locavore movement.

Chef Roberto’s Garde

n

Outrigger’s Executive Chef Roberto Conrad believes that sourcing and growing a selection of locally found produce, vegetables and herbs, using eco-friendly fertilizers is fresher, better-tasting and more nutritious than the typical commercially-sourced produce. Growing their produce in the dedicated kitchen gardens under intensive supervision gives everything that’s served in their restaurants an absolute guarantee of freshness. In true Locavore spirit the restaurant’s menu is largely based on what’s in season and while not all ingredients and produce can be sourced to ‘Locavore’ principles, they have found a balance between utilizing locally grown produce and ingredients and serving great tasting cuisine.

Music played, wines, beers and cocktails flowed and kiddies gamboled about. All in all it was a strong testament to not only the health and environmental benefits of dining Locavore….but how much fun it can be too. Plant of

...Immortality

The world of beauty was enhanced by the discovery and use of the so called “plant of Immortality” or Aloe Vera. This most amazing plant can be traced back to the time of the Pharos and has been used since Egyptian times 3,050 years before the birth of Christ. In fact it is depicted in hieroglyphics carved into the stone walls of Pharos’s tombs, so important was it to these ancient people.

Health & Beauty

43

Preparations made from the plant itself are often used in the cosmetic and alternative medicine industries which make claims for its soothing, moisturizing and healing properties. Aloe Vera gel is also used as an ingredient in commercially available lotions, yogurt, beverages and even some desserts. Thailand is blessed in that it has the perfect climate for growing Aloe Vera and happily enough this wonder plant can be used for the treatment of many of the conditions that Phuket’s climate may induce. The sun and rains can be destructive to the natural beauty of one’s skin, but this wonder plant can be used to counteract the effects. In addition Aloe Vera is used topically to treat wounds and many skin conditions and it can even be taken orally as a laxative. Today, in addition to traditional uses people take Aloe orally to treat a variety of conditions, including diabetes, asthma, epilepsy and osteoarthritis. People also use Aloe topically for osteoarthritis, burns, sunburns and psoriasis. Aloe Vera gel can be found in hundreds of skin products, including lotions and sun-blocks, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it as a natural food à avoring. Indeed Aloe Vera is a wonder pant a true gift of Immortality in the pursuit of beauty and we have an abundance of it here in Phuket. Story by... Emmanuelle Ghobert

8

of Krabi’s most stunningly beautiful beaches

1. Are Krabi’s beaches among the world’s very best?

Are these the most beautiful beaches in Thailand? Are these among the most beautiful in the world? This tropical Southeast Asian country facing both the PaciÀc and Indian oceans is famous for having some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and Krabi’s are said to be the best in the country. Each year when the monsoon season sets in the tourists virtually disappear. The few who remain rarely take boat tours to islands when waves are rolling in from the Indian ocean. The beaches are left to themselves, facing their makers, the wind and waves. For nearly six months the beaches take their annual pounding, a cleansing in fact, and their annual rejuvenation. There are no human constructions near most of these beaches to interrupt the natural processes nor spoil the views. When the monsoon fades away in October or November Krabi’s beaches look as pristine as they did a million years ago. Happily, the tourists leave nothing more permanent than foot prints on these sands.

2. Tham Phra Nang

The beach at Tham Phra Nang is quite unlike any other. To its north a huge meatloaf of rock juts skywards like an erect phallic symbol. At the south the Princess’s cave lies half hidden, like a mysterious and inviting woman. An impossible, and impossibly beautiful stretch of sand holds these would be rocky lovers apart. During the eons it will take for them to come together in their next life, as sand, we humans can frolic with abandon on the virgin Princess’s own beach.

3. That oh-so-famous Railay Beach

Railay Beach has been included in many lists of the world’s most beautiful beaches – understandably so. Where else can one Ànd a perfect stretch of coconut-fringed sand so completely protected by walls of sheer rock that roads cannot enter? Railay Beach is now a major pit-stop on Thailand’s well-worn tourist circuit. Almost 1,000 rooms here is not enough to accommodate all of the people coming each day during the high season. The majority of visitors coming to bask in the sun and power of the mighty rocks have to return to Ao Nang each evening by longtail boat. The amazing beauty of Railay Beach, along with that of its sister around the corner, Tham Phra Nang, is the not-so-secret weapon selling Krabi around the world.

4. The many facets of Koh Hong Krabi

Koh Hong is a very large gem in Krabi’s jewel-studded seas, this one sparkling with many features. The name itself denotes an island with a big hole in the middle, in which there is a huge lagoon that has eroded from the inside of the island outwards. A narrow channel through which the eroding tides have been ebbing for a million years now provides entry for small boats. It is also excellent kayaking territory where those quiet enough may hear and see a variety of birds, including the Greater Hornbill. The stunningly beautiful beach is that on the east coast – a thin strip of sand sliding into clear water at the base of a towering rock wall. Lush forest spills out over the beach on each side of this sheer rock. The beach then swings around into a pretty side bay that has a lagoon carved out like a natural swimming pool. Schools of bold, Striped Sergeant Major Àsh swarm around swimmers hoping to be fed.

5. Koh Pak Bia, few beaches, but what beaches!

This little group of about a dozen islands rising out of the sea in weird and jagged shapes sits midway between Krabi’s coast and the two Yao islands, delighting visitors on the beaches of both places. For guests in Tub Khaek’s beachfront resorts the island shapes add mystery to the horizon each time the sunset performs in brilliant colors. From Koh Yao Noi the island shapes enhance the sunrise. There are very few beaches among such islands that rise vertically from the sea, but those we do Ànd here are exceptionally picturesque like the little tongue of sand abutting the leader of the group, Pak Bia Island.

Health & Beauty

6. Koh Poda Beach, Poda sand bar

This striking island directly out in front of Krabi’s Ao Nang has three connected but distinct beaches on north, east and south sides. But it is the curved sandbank beach wrapped around a little lagoon that is the most striking. This is the result of the tidal currents swirling around the island. It often changes shape and size, and sometimes gets washed away in the monsoon months, only to be reconstituted in the calmer high season weather. The second, exceptionally attractive sand feature here is the ‘double beach’ along both sides of the sand bar to the south of Koh Poda.

7. Ao Nang Centara Beach – it’s all in those walls of rock

This little beach is close to, but unseen from Krabi’s main transport hub, Ao Nang Beach. It’s just a few hundred meters along the coast, cut off and hidden by a small headland. A towering rock wall seals the beach in from behind so completely that the only way in and out – aside from a rough mountain trek – is by boat. The beauty in this beach is not in its own sand and water, which are barely average for Krabi, but in the stunning vistas all around. Turn 360 degrees and the eye is challenged with amazing sights at every twist.

8. Krabi’s little-known, low-key gem, Tub Khaek

Tub Khaek Beach is unusual for Krabi – it does not have a backdrop of rock walls or other geographic wonders to pump it up with visual power. Here is a simple, but very natural combination of clear water, nice sand and beautiful old beach trees leaning far out over the sand as if they really cared about the humans they protect from the sun. And the people relaxing under those trees love them in return. This is a truly peaceful and relaxing beach scene of a kind hard to Ànd in Krabi. Krabi’s famous beaches are more awe-inspiring than the strip of sand and trees here at Tub Khaek. A large measure of Tub Khaek’s calm beauty comes from the fact that it has no geographic Wow! features. Just lots of zzzzz below those beautiful beach trees. Story by... John Everingham

Andaman

GETTING TO KNOW the Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta

as it could actually be classiÀed as a mud Áat, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high difÀcult rating. Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local Àshermen leave offerings for good fortune. Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, Àsh, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with majestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area

Klong Muang Beach/Tubkaak Krabi’s latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming. The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located. The Phi Phi Islands Known for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as major “party islands.” Poda Islands Situated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for Àshing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful Àsh.

HIGHLIGHT ATTRACTIONS.. Emerald Pool Emerald Pool or Sra Morakot in Thai is located at Klong Thom District. This hot spring originates from a warm stream in the lowland forest. The intensity of the pool’s turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so a good time to visit is at dawn or early morning.

Bird Watching A trip to Krabi can be a very rewarding visit for any bird lovers. With easily accessible mangroves and low lying forests, there are many places to spot rare birds. Two excellent locations are Khao Kanat Nam, close to Krabi Town, and Khao No Chuchi Forest Preserve.

Tiger Cave Temple Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua in Thai is located about 3 kilometers from Krabi town. The inside of this cave features tiger prints captured in stone and is in the middle of an abundant forest with gigantic ancient trees. This place is remarkable archaeologically as many artifacts have been found on the premises including tools, pottery and the mold for the Buddha’s footprint.

Partying Phi Phi is known worldwide as “Party Island central” and Koh Lanta is not far behind. Krabi Town is more sedate, but there are plenty of good bars and a live music scene to enjoy.

HIGHLIGHTS & ACTIVITIES... Rock Climbing Apart from marine sports, Krabi is also an ideal place for rock climbing. Lines of sheer limestone cliffs along Tham Phranang and Rai Le Beaches have challenged thousands of climbers from all over the world every year. The levels of difÀculty of the various routes vary, so Whether you’re a professional or just an aspiring adrenalin junkie, the craggy karsts of Krabi offer a huge array of bolted mounts. Diving Both scuba and snorkeling are widely available in warm, coral and Àsh infested waters with full PADI accreditation courses and live-aboard adventures. Sightseeing by Canoe or Kayak Many companies offer sea canoeing and kayaking adventures around Phang Nga Bay and into the many coves, caves and islets dotting the otherworldly shores around Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. Fishing Abundant sea and even freshwater Àshing is available all over this region, from squid boating, to line Àshing in Phang Nga Bay, to big game adventures off the Continental Shelf drop-off. Don’t let that big one get away!

Shopping Outlet Village Krabi is located on Phetchakasem Road. It is on the way from the city to the local airport and features a tall lighthouse near the entrance and 6,000 sqm of retail space. Throughout the year, many Thai and foreign travelers visit this outlet which offers over 100 selected leading brands for all ages. Clothing discounted up to 70% is available here. It is open daily from 11:00 a.m. - 9.00 p.m. Enjoying the Local Seafood Have a seafood feast and savor the fresh day’s catch in any number of a fun, laidback, or Àne-dining restaurants all over this region.

GETTING THERE By road from Phuket Take a minibus or frequent local bus from Phuket Town’s bus terminal with information regarding timetables, taxi or mini-van shuttle services readily available at hotels, travel agent or Phuket Airport. Renting a car is also a good option and the roads are wide, modern and relatively quiet. To Krabi and Phi Phi by boat It is possible to charter a speedboat or similar transportation to Krabi or Koh Phi Phi, or there are frequent daily ferries operating between Phuket and Phi Phi Island and then on to Krabi, or via the Koh Yao Islands, each taking about two hours.
