EXPERIENCE A FUN FILLED ADVENTURE AT FLYING HANUMAN Finding adventure and exploring new experiences is the reason that some people go on vacation! If you spend your everyday life stuck in an office then adventure is nowhere in sight! But luckily for me, I’m living on this wonderful island of Phuket which has many adventurous options available. My first experience with Flying Hanuman on my recent trip there was a wonderful example of what Phuket has available. I arrived at the lobby thronging with other participants and had a quick look around. The whole the place and all the equipment are superbly designed and even with artistic touches here and there We were then greeted by the guides who were going to take us through this adventure, but first we had to watch a safety and information DVD on a 40 flat screen TV. Safety is of course a massively important part of the adventure and the training and safety procedures are extremely thorough. The most important part of the equipment supplied at ground level is the

personal pulley. This allows you to zip from line to line. The safety carabiner and lanyard are attached to the safety lines on each platform and act as a backup attachment when on the zip lines. Everyone has a minimum of two safety guides with them throughout the experience. Our guides also made sure to use a lot of mosquito repellent spray on us beforehand. After two and a half hours we finished up our adventure reveling in the amazing sensations of flying from those massive tall trees, with our adrenaline at its peak! Even though I was a bit scared throughout, I have to say Flying Hanuman was one of the most thrilling experiences I’ve ever had and it was a unique, one-ofa-kind adventure that I would absolutely do again and would recommend it to anyone. If you decide to give it a go, remember to wear proper sport shoes, short pants and sports pants are recommended if you have them. Uniquely Thai, Distinctively Phuket Andaman Embrace Resort & Spa is a brilliant Phuket hotel that shines above the other accommodation choices on the island. An embracing array of services and facilities awaits, going above and beyond the resort’s 4-star rating with atmospheric dining, distinctive guestrooms, spa, dazzling swimming pool and much more means that Andaman Embrace Resort & Spa is a destination in itself. All surrounded with styling influenced by Phuket’s very own Sino-Portuguese architecture. If location is what you want, the sea, sand and waves are only steps away.

Getting to know

Sriram Kailasam General Manager of Banyan Tree Phuket Please give us a brief overview of your background, training and experience. I graduated from the prestigious Oberoi School of Management as an apprentice chef some 22 years ago. I later moved to Australia where I worked for several fine dining establishments and International groups such as Starwood; Stamford Hotels Sydney and Raffles Hotel. After starting in 2003 with Banyan Tree Phuket, I moved in 2005 to Banyan Tree Bangkok, then back to Phuket to take over as GM in April 2012. What changes in the geographies, demographics and psychographics of your key audience groups are you seeing in 2013 and beyond Phuket’s attraction as a premier island resort still endures, but the demographics have evolved. The seasonality still remains strong and even the general source has remained the same as in Europe and Asia. But where Britain, Germany and Switzerland used to be the key players, Russia has grown in a big way over the past few years. As far as Asia is concerned the traditional sources such as Japan and Korea are still key partners from North Asia, but demand from China is rapidly growing. What are the key initiatives that Banyan Tree Phuket will implement to maintain its pre-eminent position going forward? Over the past few years we’ve evolved from a couple’s only resort to being more family-centric while maintaining our brand of understated elegance. That’s why we took the initiative of building the one and two bedroom DoublePool villas alongside our Deluxe two bedroom pool villas. We felt there was a niche for this product as Phuket is a destination for family holidays from emerging economies like China, India and the Middle East. Banyan Tree Phuket has a vaulted Health and Wellness ethos. What developments can we expect in this area? Health and Wellness now has a mini resort of its own within Banyan Tree Phuket – Banyan Tree Spa Sanctuary. This cluster of 14 villas is perfect for someone looking for health and spa, relaxation. In this “no-kid” zone you can start your day with yoga or Pilates, followed by a healthy breakfast, then a relaxing neck or shoulder massage. Aside from this there is an Ayurvedia doctor on site and healthy cuisine at Tamarind restaurant.

Finally, please tell us about your new Sunday brunches. We recently decided to launch our “Live” Brunch catering to the island gourmands. The emphasis is on “Live” as there’s plenty of live seafood and live cooking stations to choose from. The open-air setting of the Watercourt with views to the beautiful villas and lagoon with soothing live Jazz completes most Sundays. Delicacies include freshly shucked oysters, Canadian Lobster, Tiger Prawns, live fish, original French foie gras, Japanese sushi and sashimi and wok-fried manila clams, high-quality Wagyu beef steaks, generous cold cuts assortment and a carvery station. We have everything for a laid-back Sunday afternoon with friends and family. Please call the hotel line at: 076 372 400 or e-mail fb-phuket@banyantree.com to make your booking.

Perfect Acqua! In Acqua Restaurant on Kalim Bay Owner and Chief Chef Alessandro Frau has created one of Phuket’s finest temples of gastronomic excellence. Baz Daniel savors perfection.

If you are fortunate enough to review restaurants as a part of your job, you quickly realize that most Phuket eateries are compromised between the profit motive and the dictates of corporate bean-counters. Most hotel and resort restaurants around the island are not run by caring chefs who love food, but by hard-nosed accountants back in Head Office who love profits! The smaller privately-owned eateries often struggle to survive financially, or succumb to a short term greed-driven strategy. It’s refreshing then, to visit a restaurant such as Acqua and its owner and chef Alessandro Frau that are totally dedicated to nothing short of perfection in cuisine, wines, service and ambience and all at a fair price. Alessandro hails from Sardinia and served his time in the corporate sector as Executive Chef with the Sheraton Grande at Laguna, prior to opening his own wonderful creation - Acqua. The moment you arrive at the elegant white portals of Acqua overlooking Kalim Bay, you realize this is something very different and special from other run-of-the-mill Phuket eateries. Everything about Acqua emanates style and creativity.

The clean, modern lines and black and white decorative theme is carried right through to the tableware itself and speaks of an attention to detail and flair for presentation that characterize both Alessandro and Acqua. The staff is knowledgeable, welcoming and well-trained and tellingly, Alessandro himself is always present working with passion and dedication to ensure that your evening will be perfect. Alessandro is passionate about great food and his Sardinian roots are evident in many of his traditional dishes, yet he does not shy away from experimentation and innovation. Great food starts with the most excellent ingredients and here Acqua excels. Every week Alessandro receives shipments of the freshest ingredients from the markets of Paris, Rome, Sydney and Auckland. Not just such non-indigenous delicacies as truffles, foie gras, or fresh porcini mushrooms, but even cold-water oysters, Sicilian prawns, North African squid, or Alaskan lobster and Mediterranean fish. Alessandro explains that few restaurants in Phuket are prepared to take the “food risk” of ordering such high quality ingredients for fear of having to jettison them if

www.theguidephuket.com

they are unused. But Acqua has developed such a large number of dedicated followers that Alessandro can be sure that such fabulous imported ingredients will be enthusiastically consumed by his many regular guests.

37

Alessandro has completed the up-grade of his wine cellar which was already superb and achieved the hallowed Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. The expanded cellar features no less than 430 labels and over 50 Italian classics and is complemented by a wide selection of cocktails, imported and local beers and wines-by-the- glass. To sit on Acqua’s outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean and dine on fresh scallops and foie gras, boiled octopus in potato sauce, oak-smoked wild Scottish salmon and grilled prime Black Angus rib eye while savoring a fine Amarone Classico is perfection indeed. And when you do so, it’s easy to comprehend why Russian billionaires and Saudi Princes literally ask for Alessandro by name to prepare their cuisine when they Lear-jet into Phuket. That Bible of restaurant listings the 2013 Miele Guide names only five restaurants as the pre-eminent ones in Thailand and four of those are in Bangkok. The other one is Acqua, and savoring such perfection it’s easy to understand why. Acqua Restaurant 322/5, Prabaramee Road, Kalim Beach, Phuket Tel: +66 (0) 76 618 127 www.acquarestaurantphuket.com

‘Juicy’ ...ways to better health

Juice bars can be found in most cities in Southeast Asia and the whole world is now aware of the benefits of different blends of fruit and vegetables. In Bangkok, you can grab a fresh, mixed juice from a stall at many Skytrain stations, while in other cities like Tokyo you can stop for a fruit burst while you’re shopping in a mall. As we all know, fruit and vegetables are high in various minerals, vitamins, and proteins, so by sipping one down every day you can stock up on most of your required intake in a single glass. What’s more, when you mix different types of vegetables and fruit you can address specific health issues or build up immunities by cleansing the liver and even cleaning the blood. Different fruit and vegetable families offer distinctive health benefits. Bananas are high in potassium, for example, while papaya contains useful digestive enzymes to help break down other foods in the body. More exotic ingredients have also made their way onto the menus at spas and wellness centres around the island.

acids. This has made it a very popular ingredient amongst health practitioners. Official research has yet to be completed on the healing properties of Spirulina, but many claim that it protects the immune system and can also reduce the effects of allergies. The

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that’s rich in proteins, minerals and anti-oxidants. It also contains zinc, copper, iron and essential fatty

bright green colour and thick texture puts some people off, but the taste resemble banana and it certainly won’t do you any harm. Beyond juices, flavourings and culinary additions like black pepper, lemon juice, coriander and ginger not only add to the taste of your food, they also provide an extra health boost. Blends such as celery and parsley combined, for example, are known to be good for arthritis, while if you mix in papaya, this can help asthma sufferers. Lettuce and celery help induce restful sleep, while blackberry or grape with parsley helps protect the body against anemia. If you have low blood pressure, try green peppers with garlic. Across SE Asia, it is easy to source fresh fruit and vegetables and most of them are much cheaper than in the west. This means restaurants can serve delicious combinations for the same price as less healthy manufactured drinks. The good choice of succulent tropical fruit adds extra flavour to any juice mix and suits the tropical surroundings that characterize most of the island’s spas. Healthy Juice Mixes Liver cleanse: pineapple, carrot, beetroot and lime. Skin tonic: carrot, capsicum and spinach Stress reduction: apple, pineapple, mint and lime or tomato, carrot, coriander, broccoli and celery. Immunity improver: apple, carrot, lemon, ginger and garlic.

Phuket’s

best kept hair care secret... I’m sure that every girl has dreamt of the day that they can wash their hair and simply leave the house without a good old fashioned blow-dry whilst still boasting of fabulous looking hair. Ladies, that day is today with the spectacular Brazilian Blowout and here is how I came to know about Phuket’s best kept hair care secret.

Last week, I was lucky enough to visit Senses Health & Beauty Clinique for a brand new treatment and I was excited to say the least after hearing all the latest gossip from the professionals in the industry. But what exactly is the Brazilian Blowout? I’m sure I’m not the first girl to ask this puzzling question, despite the rave reviews of fantastic long-lasting, faultless results. Well according to my best friend Google – the Brazilian is the only professional smoothing treatment that gives you smooth, shiny and frizz – free hair without using any

potent chemicals like those used in other straightening and smoothing methods. So how long do these organic results last? Well my in-depth research discovered that the results can last between 10 and 12 weeks and I’m pleased to say I can see no loss in quality to this day. Think of the results you’ve experienced from the best deep conditioner you’ve ever used and then multiple by three months and you’ll be close to the predicted quality found with the Brazilian Blowout. As I arrived, I was introduced to Kitty, who was to be my hair specialist for the following hours. We began the process and I was first invited to the shampoo bowl where I was treated to a special shampoo and conditioner wash that is renowned at the Senses Health & Beauty Clinique for being of the highest standard. With my frizzy and dried hair, I was finally introduced to the highly anticipated treatment. After being pleasantly surprised that I could detect no potent chemicals in the appearance or scent, the ever skillful and deft hands of Kitty, started to comb the Brazilian Blowout Professional Treatment through each section of my hair from root to tip lightly coating each section with the solution.

known to cause long-lasting damage to hair. Compared with this product, the Senses Health & Beauty Clinique offers a professional smoothing treatment containing amino acids plus protein derived from natural ingredients rich in amino acid such as acai berry, camu camu and annatto seeds.

It was hard for me to believe this could actually do anything, beneficial or otherwise to the maintenance and quality of my hair, but Kitty explained that the solution surrounded each hair strand with protective protein layers to smooth and support each hair cuticle. She then continued to explain the additional benefits of the Brazilian Blowout. The well-known techniques of thermal reconditioning or Japanese straightening from the US are currently embroiled in controversy as they contain formaldehyde to preserve that sleek tame finish, a strong chemical

The treatment is formaldehyde-free. It creates a protein layer around the hair strand to protect and improve the health of hair. The treatment’s aim is to coat the hair cuticles and fill in the gaps and breakages caused by chemical treatments, without changing the bonds of the hair. It is not a straightening treatment. As the hair “cuticles smooth out, the hair appears silkier and very curly hair becomes wavy, while already wavy hair transforms to smooth and manageable. After the 90-treatment, my hair remained thicker, more polished and a whole lot healthier to the touch and appearance. The shine is unbelievable and with the saran-wrap effect, these results I believe will ensure hair dryer hibernation for at least two months. My straighter, more manageable hair will probably enjoy this new freedom for four months. Since enjoying the treatment at Senses Health & Beauty Clinique it has been two weeks and my hair still looks and feels incredible. Story by ... Plalida

GETTING TO KNOW the Northern Andaman Region of Khaolak, Phang Nga

Just an hour’s drive north of Phuket in mainland Phang Nga province, Khaolak is a beautiful area with long, sandy beaches fringed by the many surrounding national parks offering nature lovers a pristine landscape of beaches, jungle-covered mountains, forested valleys, mangroves and estuaries. Go for long walks on the b beach, take a nature tour and explore the interior, go sightseeing by elephant, trek through the jun jungle, or go rafting along the local rivers with one of the daily Eco-Tours. K Khaolak is also a great jumping off point in the high season for a trip to the Surin and Similan Islands, ren nowned for world-class scuba diving, or for the gorgeous Khao Sok National Park further to the north.

Sea Kayaking There are several companies offering sea cave kayaking tours from Khaolak to nearby Phang Nga Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the departure point, the ‘mother ship’, which also transports the kayaks, takes you to limestone islands that have collapsed into themselves leaving the interior intact and untouched over many years. Sea caves lead into these lagoons and when the tide is right the result is akin to visiting a parallel world where time stands still. Wining an and Dining Khaolakk has an abundance of great Thai and international restaurants, pubs and bars, some offering music and all are welcoming and friendly.

59

Home Stays and Environmentalism North of Khaolak there are many Muslim villages offering fascinating home stays linked to local culture, agriculture and the environment. All are well worth visiting and of course help the local economies. Sea Fishing Abundant fishing opportunities are available offshore from local line angling to big game chasing farther afield.

Andaman

GETTING TO KNOW the Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta

as it could actually be classified as a mud flat, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high difficult rating. Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local fishermen leave offerings for good fortune. Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, fish, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with majestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area

Klong Muang Beach/Tubkaak Krabi’s latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming. The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located. The Phi Phi Islands Known for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as major “party islands.” Poda Islands Situated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for fishing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful fish.

HIGHLIGHT ATTRACTIONS.. Emerald Pool Emerald Pool or Sra Morakot in Thai is located at Klong Thom District. This hot spring originates from a warm stream in the lowland forest. The intensity of the pool’s turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so a good time to visit is at dawn or early morning.

Bird Watching A trip to Krabi can be a very rewarding visit for any bird lovers. With easily accessible mangroves and low lying forests, there are many places to spot rare birds. Two excellent locations are Khao Kanat Nam, close to Krabi Town, and Khao No Chuchi Forest Preserve.

Tiger Cave Temple Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua in Thai is located about 3 kilometers from Krabi town. The inside of this cave features tiger prints captured in stone and is in the middle of an abundant forest with gigantic ancient trees. This place is remarkable archaeologically as many artifacts have been found on the premises including tools, pottery and the mold for the Buddha’s footprint.

Partying Phi Phi is known worldwide as “Party Island central” and Koh Lanta is not far behind. Krabi Town is more sedate, but there are plenty of good bars and a live music scene to enjoy.

HIGHLIGHTS & ACTIVITIES... Rock Climbing Apart from marine sports, Krabi is also an ideal place for rock climbing. Lines of sheer limestone cliffs along Tham Phranang and Rai Le Beaches have challenged thousands of climbers from all over the world every year. The levels of difficulty of the various routes vary, so Whether you’re a professional or just an aspiring adrenalin junkie, the craggy karsts of Krabi offer a huge array of bolted mounts. Diving Both scuba and snorkeling are widely available in warm, coral and fish infested waters with full PADI accreditation courses and live-aboard adventures. Sightseeing by Canoe or Kayak Many companies offer sea canoeing and kayaking adventures around Phang Nga Bay and into the many coves, caves and islets dotting the otherworldly shores around Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. Fishing Abundant sea and even freshwater fishing is available all over this region, from squid boating, to line fishing in Phang Nga Bay, to big game adventures off the Continental Shelf drop-off. Don’t let that big one get away!

Shopping Outlet Village Krabi is located on Phetchakasem Road. It is on the way from the city to the local airport and features a tall lighthouse near the entrance and 6,000 sqm of retail space. Throughout the year, many Thai and foreign travelers visit this outlet which offers over 100 selected leading brands for all ages. Clothing discounted up to 70% is available here. It is open daily from 11:00 a.m. - 9.00 p.m. Enjoying the Local Seafood Have a seafood feast and savor the fresh day’s catch in any number of a fun, laidback, or fine-dining restaurants all over this region.

GETTING THERE By road from Phuket Take a minibus or frequent local bus from Phuket Town’s bus terminal with information regarding timetables, taxi or mini-van shuttle services readily available at hotels, travel agent or Phuket Airport. Renting a car is also a good option and the roads are wide, modern and relatively quiet. To Krabi and Phi Phi by boat It is possible to charter a speedboat or similar transportation to Krabi or Koh Phi Phi, or there are frequent daily ferries operating between Phuket and Phi Phi Island and then on to Krabi, or via the Koh Yao Islands, each taking about two hours.
