ongratulations, you’re engaged! Now comes the exciting part: Planning your big day. But, before you get carried away with fantasies about the wedding you’ve been dreaming of, we’re here to make everything a little easier for you. From finding the perfect venue to creating the all-important guestlist, some of the biggest decisions you make will happen in the early planning stages. So, to make sure your wedding is as beautiful as you imagine it to be, we’ve created this simple checklist to help you every step of the way on your wedding planning journey. First things first, before you even think about the details, you’ll need to decide on a budget. Sit down with your partner and think practically about how much money you’re able and willing to spend on your wedding. After you’ve thought about how much cash you want to splash, it’s time for the tricky bit: Working out which lucky people get to

ongratulations! You’ve said ‘yes’, and started on the exciting path towards married life together. However, wedding planning (and the pressure to start quickly) can easily get overwhelming, so we’ve created a handy list to help get you started…

Get your Ring Sized and Insured First things first - if you haven’t already, make sure your engagement ring fits you perfectly, and is insured. If this means having it resized, then do this ASAP, as a ring that’s too big may slip off your finger and be lost. 14

You should also make sure you add your engagement ring to your home content insurance, or look into specific jewellery insurance to make sure that you’re covered in case anything ever happened to your beautiful new ring.

Chat About Your Priorities Before you can start to make wedding decisions, you need to make sure you and your new fiance are both on the same page. Do you want a short or a long engagement? A wedding in the UK or abroad? A large gathering or an intimate celebration? www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

We’d l o v e to help y o u th r ou gh y weddin our g plan ning jo f ro m s u r n ey t a r t to finish, not do s o w hy w nl o a d yo u r online F R EE weddin g plan today? ner Sig n u g ui d e s p at f o r b ri d es.co.u k/ planne r!

Something casual or all-out elegance? Make a list of the things that are most important to you when it comes to planning, and refer back to these if you ever feel overwhelmed.

Set Your Budget Your wedding budget is one of the most important things to get sorted early, and it’s vital that you talk figures. For some people, a ‘budget’ wedding may cost £1,000, and for others it may cost £10,000, so make sure you’re on the same wavelength. Once you know your magic number, discuss how you’re going to pay. Are you going to save up before the big day, ask for help from family, or look into a personal loan? Be sure you have a plan before paying for anything.

Get Inspired Now comes the fun part! Once you’ve decided roughly what kind of wedding you’re thinking of, and how much you want to spend, you can start getting inspired. Start a Pinterest board (if you haven’t already!), look up real weddings for real-life inspiration, and follow all your favourite wedding websites on social media. (Psst - we’re @guidesforbrides!) GfB The Wedding Directory 2019-20

Get Key Suppliers Sorted First When it comes to actually starting to book your suppliers, then the most important one to sort first is, of course, your wedding venue. Once you have this booked and the date is set, then you’ll find the rest of the process simpler. Next on the list should be your photographer, as they often get booked up far in advance and can only do a limited number of weddings, and your catering if it’s not being provided by your venue. You should also book anything you have your heart absolutely set on - if you’re desperate to get a certain type of band, or book a specific makeup artist, then do it sooner rather than later. Once these important suppliers are booked, you can have fun choosing the rest! 15

annah and James tied the knot in a gorgeously sunny August wedding at one of Buckinghamshire’s most beautiful wedding venues, Hedsor House. As the bride was local to the area, Hedsor House was the ideal choice of venue for this couple’s elegant navy blue and ivory wedding day. Relaxed bride Hannah looked amazing in a strapless lace fishtail gown purchased from Ellie Sanderson in Beaconsfield, which she accessorised with a sparkling headpiece, glittery Roland Cartier sandals and a dramatic doublelayer veil. Her three bridesmaids wore navy blue multiway dresses, while James and his groomsmen wore dapper blue check suits with champagne waistcoats and navy ties. The emotional wedding ceremony took place in Hedsor’s Centre Hall, during which a live harpist played. The amazing floral arrangements were made up of ivory roses, eucalyptus, ivy and astilbe, which corresponded with the bouquets and the flower crowns worn by the adorable flower girls. The guests enjoyed a sunny drinks reception in the grounds (which included wheelbarrows

Hannah and James had named the tables after important dates in their relationship, and each guest received a sweet stamped biscuit as their wedding favour. Missenden Abbey This stunning medieval building in Buckinghamshire is over 800 years old, having been founded as a monastery in 1133 before being converted into a manor house. The venue is famous for its vaulted rooms, the ceremonial staircase, stained glass and ornate plasterwork, as well as the 10 acres of gorgeous grounds. Weddings at Missenden Abbey take place in the Library or Garden Room, both licensed for civil weddings and partnerships, or you can marry at one of the beautiful nearby churches. The venue is incredibly flexible, offering both dry hire packages for couples who want to create their dream day from the ground up, and bespoke wedding packages to suit a range of wedding budgets.

The Oakley Court The Oakley Court is a luxurious Victorian Gothic hotel in Windsor, Berkshire, that dates back to 1859. The incredible architecture is matched only by the venue’s history - The Oakley Court has been everything from a famous film set for movies such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show to the host of visiting royals like King Edward VII and Queen Elizabeth II, and even the base for Great Britain’s Olympic rowing team. 26

Historic Wedding Venues in

Berkshire & Buckinghamshire This part of the country is home to some of the most beautiful historical wedding venues in the UK. Here are just a few of our favourites…

The venue boasts 118 bedrooms, an awardwinning restaurant and attentive staff, and 33 acres of grounds and manicured lawns that stretch down to the River Thames. For civil ceremonies and wedding breakfasts for up to 160 guests, The Windsor Suite is a contemporary function room in the historic old house with its own private entrance, bar and facilities. For smaller, more intimate weddings, you can choose from The Sitting Room and Library.

Stowe House This gorgeous grade I listed country house in Stowe, Buckinghamshire, is a National Trust property built for entertaining. To this end, the six wedding spaces are varied but all equally impressive, and are guaranteed to take your guests’ breath away. For example, the magnificent Marble Saloon can seat up to 200 for a civil ceremony or 120 for a sit-down meal and offers views of the stunning Octagon Lake and Corinthian Arch. Wedding menu ideas for every season... Spring For a light, fresh Spring wedding menu, starters could include zingy salads with edible flowers, light smoked salmon or Spring vegetable soup, while lamb and chicken make perfect light roasts for mains. Embrace citrus flavours such as lemon drizzle cake or key lime pie.

CATERING Please don’t forget to mention Guides for B rides when bookin g your suppliers .

Summer Mezze sharing boards, barbecues and picnics are ideal for taking advantage of Summer wedding weather. For a more formal meal, why not try harissa lamb or saffron chicken with tabbouleh, or if you prefer classic British food, a light herby chicken with an English garden salad? For dessert, fresh strawberries and cream, Eton mess or a selection of fresh sorbets.

Autumn Embrace the cooler weather with roasted vegetables, warming soups and spicy flavours. An Autumnal soup or baked camembert always works well for starters, and hearty mains like pies with mash, roast pheasant or pumpkin risotto will go down a storm. For pudding why not try a selection of fruit pies or crumbles, or a hot chocolate brownie?

Winter Christmas classics like roast turkey, pigs in blankets and cheese boards are surefire hits for December weddings, or opt for slow-cooked steaks or rich venison. Traditional terrines, chutneys and Winter vegetable soups are perfect for starters, and for dessert, mince pies, chocolate tortes and sticky toffee pudding to round off your meal. MARQUEES

We cover your wedding beautifully

How to add personal touches to your marquee wedding SIZE Whether you’re wanting your marquee to fill a small garden or large field, marquees are available in all shapes and sizes. This allows lots of flexibility with guest lists, location and design. FABULOUS FLOORING Most marquees come with standard matting flooring, however, there is always room for adding that personal touch. Whether you opt for carpet, elegant tiles or a disco dance floor – the choice is yours. A BLANK CANVAS Whether you are dreaming of a moroccan themed lounge or a fairy lit wonderland, marquees enable you to get creative with your decor and styling. FLEXIBLE SECTIONING Parts of a marquee can be easily sectioned off. You could have one section for the wedding breakfast, one for the dance floor and a hidden section for the caterers. OUTDOOR PURSUITS Marquee weddings are great for a Summer wedding. Be at one with nature, incorporating fire pits, tree swings and picnic areas into your big day. LUXURY TOUCHES Just because you’re marrying in a marquee, doesn’t mean you have to settle for Portaloos. There are plenty of luxury mobile toilets for hire with separate ladies and gents stalls, proper basins, towels, and mirrors. You could even create bathroom baskets for your guests.

S

o, you’ve booked the perfect venue and popped the big question to your bridesmaids and now it’s time to snap up your favourite suppliers. This crucial stage of wedding planning can be stressful, but it’s important that you start early (ideally 9-12 months before the big day!) so you can get all of the suppliers you want. The key to booking suppliers is to know what you’re looking for, so make sure you have an idea of what you want before you get started. We recommend attending local wedding fairs to get inspired (turn to the back of the guide for local wedding fairs). The first supplier that you should think about booking is your photographer and any other supplier that can only do one wedding per day. When it comes to booking your transport, a lot of brides already have an idea of how they want to arrive at their venue. So, whether it’s a gorgeous vintage car, or a stylish limousine, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Other key suppliers

VIDEOGRAPHY Why you Should Film Your Wedding Day We spoke to Posterity Video in Reading to find out why you should consider a wedding videographer...

Many engaged couples haven’t even considered having the most important day of their lives filmed - which we think is a real shame! There are many reasons why you should consider having your day filmed, and these are just a few... On your wedding day you will doubtless look better than you ever have. This is surely the one day in your life it would be good to have on film, and in years to come you will realise how fantastic you looked on your special day, and be thankful that you have the DVD to remind you. Photography and videography do two different jobs and both are valuable. Photographs generate smiles; a video produces laughter and tears. A photograph provides memories of how everyone looked; a wedding film brings the memories to life – you can hear your grandfather’s laugh; smile as the toddler runs across the lawn; cry as your father says how proud you have made him. How else would you see the look on your partner’s face as he sees you for the first time, or your smile as your eyes meet? These are truly priceless sequences that work so much better in a moving, speaking image. A bride whose wedding had been filmed said that her four-year-old saw a photo of his parents’ wedding and asked her about it. She was so happy to be able to sit with him and show him the film of how it all happened, rather than just look at pictures! Your wedding film will become part of your family’s heritage, and as time passes you will appreciate more and more the value of having a film of those wonderful people enjoying your day with you.

Wedding Real

An elegant navy blue and pink wedding at Hampden House

Kristina & James Photography Annabel Farley Photography

A

fter being engaged for five years, Kristina and James tied the knot in a beautiful June wedding at Hampden House in Buckinghamshire. The ceremony took place at the stunning St Mary Magdalene Church in Great Hampden, which was within the beautiful grounds of Hampden House. The age and history of the church, as well as it being within walking distance to the reception, meant that it was the perfect place for James and Kristina’s ceremony. The couple chose an elegant navy blue and dusty pink colour scheme, with the groomsmen in navy suits and the bridesmaids in gorgeous pink maxi dresses. The bridesmaids and Kristina carried stunning bouquets made up of roses, peonies, wax flowers and lamb’s ear foliage in pale pink and ivory shades.

The fourtier cake was iced in pale pink . 36

Kristina looked amazing in her lace A-line gown from Ronald Joyce, which she purchased from The Bridal House in Aston Clinton. She accessorized the dress with a two-tier silk-edged veil and a sparkly hair accessory. For the wedding breakfast at Hampden House, guests were www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

served chicken Waldorf salad with nectarine and cherry salsa for starters, followed by carved roast sirloin of beef with Yorkshire pudding, creamed mash potato and chantenay carrots. Dessert was Madagascan vanilla crème brulee with all-butter shortbread hearts. Instead of individual wedding favours, Kristina and James put the money towards a prize raffle for their guests. Each guest had a raffle ticket on their name card, and the numbers were drawn after dinner. The winner received a bottle of vintage champagne, the runner up received an experience day voucher. We think this is a great alternative to favours! The newlyweds and guests partied the night away to Hampden House’s in-house DJ and enjoyed a magic mirror photobooth, which Kristina won for free in an online competition! What a bonus. is t Kr

Honeymoon Inspiration:

Vietnam

Amanoi

What to do You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to visit in Vietnam, and there’s plenty of choice whether you’re looking for a city break, a beach escape or a mix of both. Internal flights and taxis are inexpensive and simple to arrange so we’d encourage you to explore more than one area. Vietnam’s capital Hanoi is a bustling and vibrant city packed with incredible food, sights and attractions, while Hoi An is popular with travellers thanks to its old world charm and fantastic blend of cultural influences. If you’d rather be exploring nature, then the 40

world-famous Halong Bay should be on your list. It’s made up of thousands of islands and is ideal for scuba diving, rock climbing and hiking. We also recommend Dalat, which is also known as ‘The Alps of Vietnam’ - this jaw-dropping region is home to Xuan Huong Lake and The Valley of Love.

Where to stay There is a huge choice of hotels offering great prices in every city and tourist area, however we’d really encourage you to make the most of the 5* hotels which offer excellent value www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

for money compared to similar hotels in other countries. It is your honeymoon, after all... Amanoi A 5-star resort on Vietnam’s South East coast, Amanoi is based on the edge of Nui Chua National Park, which makes it ideal for those who want to explore the rugged unspoilt beauty of this region. Each of the villas, pavilions and residences comes with a fabulous view of either the mountain, forest, lake or sea. The Aman Spa is set on a lotus-filled lake and offers a whole host of innovative treatments as well as an immersive wellness program. Take advantage of the complementary classes in the yoga pavilion before enjoying delicious food at one of the two restaurants.

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay This luxurious 5-star resort is only accessible by boat from Nha Trang, which gives you the impression that you’re on your own private island. The incredible villa accommodation boasts breathtaking views of the bay. There are three great restaurants, as well as a wine cave and cocktail bar, and you can indulge in some post-wedding pampering in the Six Senses Spa.

ow that you’ve got the admin sorted, it’s finally time for the best part of planning a wedding... deciding on your bridal wear! This is the most important dress you’ll ever buy, so make it count. Whether you’ve always known want you want to wear on your big day, or if you’ve got no idea, relax and enjoy this exciting step. To begin with, start with buying your bridal gown, shoes, accessories, veil and underwear. Why not take your bridesmaids to a bridal wear shop and get their dresses at the same time? HATS Please t don’t forge to mention Brides Guides for ing when book . rs e your suppli

Top Tips for Wedding Hats Choose a statement dress or a statement hat - but not both! A striking hat or fascinator can elevate a simple dress, or a minimal hat allows a bold dress to shine. You don’t want your dress and accessories to compete. Be sure that the colour compliments your outfit rather than matching it completely. Speak to your boutique or milliner about what accent colours they recommend pairing with your outfit. Experiment - but ultimately, choose something you’re comfortable in. We always recommend trying a range of styles, sizes and shapes (you might be surprised at what suits you!), but feeling comfortable in your choice is key to looking relaxed and happy in photographs. If you’re looking for designer style on a budget, then many milliners or mother of the bride boutiques will hire hat styles out. Conversely, if you’re after a very specific design, you can have a bespoke style made just for you. Just be sure you leave enough time for the design and creation process.

Trends, Ideas & Inspiration for 2019

Feathers For real old-school glamour, embrace feathers this season. Whether it’s a flowing ostrich feather skirt, fluttery feather trims on sleeves or cozy feather cover-ups, feathers add beautiful texture to any wedding dress. We’ve also seen cleverly cut feathereffect fabric skirts, which is perfect for brides who want the lighter-than-air look without the use of actual feathers.

Bows A sweet detail we see cropping up time and time again is bows! From chic pussy-bow details tied at the neck to retro, kitschy embellishments or dreamy tulle bows tied at the back, it looks like designers are falling in love with bows all over again for 2019.

Dress by Watters

Sheer and nude effect gowns were a popular trend for 2018, and we can see it going strong into 2019. Practically every collection at London Bridal Week included nude, blush and champagne-coloured liners, combined with sheer bodices and cut-outs for a daring ‘naked’ effect Take it one step further with flowing sheer lace skirts - we love this look for destination brides.

Brides have been wanting to customise their looks more and more in recent years, and bridal brands are designing to reflect that. We’re expecting to see plenty of toppers, capes, overskirts and detachable trains this year, all of which are designed to give wedding dresses a new look that’s easily customised to each bride. This trend is also extending to bridal accessories too think embroidered veils, hand-painted shoes and initial clutches.

Customisation

It’s official – blue is the new blush! Pastel shades are appearing in more and more bridal collections, with pale blue being the most popular. We’ve seen bridal gowns ranging from the lightest of baby blues to deeper, steelier shades, and it works with embroidered or applique detail too. If this trend appeals to you, why not have your ‘something blue’ be your dress?!

High Necks

Gold Savin London - credit lucalatrofa.com

This is another trend that’s been up and coming since last season, and it’s still going strong for 2019 – partly thanks to Meghan Markle and her stunning high neck reception dress from Stella McCartney. Whether you wear it with a racerback and bare shoulders or go for a Victoriana-inspired high neck and long sleeve combo, this bridal trend isn’t going anywhere.

Gold is by far the standout metallic shade of the season. From gold embroidery and brocade to sequins, glitter and beading, this trend is coming up golden - simply add metallic accessories for the full metallic effect.

he big day is getting closer, so it’s time to begin organising the personal touches. These suppliers are the ones who are going to make your wedding day feel special to you, and help you bring your vision to life. This is a great time to think about booking your florist. From white winter florals, to bright summer pastels, there are so many beautiful options for your wedding flowers, so choosing the right florist is a big decision. It’s also time to choose your wedding cake, which means one thing, cake tastings! Most couples have a great time choosing their perfect cake, so make sure to prioritise this fun step. Whilst we’re thinking about food, we recommend organising your menu at this time. With 8 weeks to go you can finally send out your invitations! CAKES

Dos and Don’ts of Wedding Cakes Do give yourself plenty of time We recommend booking your cake maker 6 to 9 months before your big day, so be sure to do plenty of research in your local area ahead of time. Don’t DIY Even if you’re an expert baker, baking and icing your own wedding cake ahead of the big day is a level of stress we wouldn’t wish on any bride! Leave it to the experts and relax. Do be flexible with pricing It’s easy to be inspired by the amazing cake designs you see on Instagram and Pinterest, but these creations take alot of time and can therefore be expensive. Be upfront with your cake maker and they’ll be able to work with you to create impact no matter your budget. Don’t forget tastings! One of the best parts about finding your wedding cake is the tastings! Many cake makers will offer these for free once you book, so be sure to experiment with your favourite flavours. Do get creative You can’t go wrong with a classic iced fruitcake, but there are plenty of fun flavours and designs to play with these days. Why not try a croquembouche, a macaron tower or cake pops?

lynne@lynnehassani.com 07801 933402 www.lynnehassani.com

54

Don’t ignore the weather The weather has an effect on your wedding cake, believe it or not. If you’re marrying in hot weather, buttercream icing can start to melt, and naked cakes can easily dry out. Chat to your cake maker and they’ll be able to advise you. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

ou’ve sorted out all the big things and it’s time to focus on the finishing touches. It’s often said that it’s the little details that make a wedding stand out from the crowd, so spend a little time organising the things that you’ve left until last. Whether it’s gifts for the bridal party and parents, or confirming the details with your suppliers, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a touch more organised. To start with, why not organise your table plan for the wedding breakfast, or write a speech that won’t leave a dry eye in the house? Whilst you’re putting the last little bits together, a lot of brides choose to have a trial run of their makeup during this time. our wedding is drawing near and excitement is in the air. You’ve spent so long organising every little detail and making sure that this day will be everything you dreamed it to be, and now it’s time to make sure everything is good to go. Some couples find the last week the most stressful, but try to relax and enjoy every single moment. Use this time as an opportunity to ensure that you have everything you’ll need with you on the day. No bride wants to spend her wedding morning frantically searching for her veil, so spend some time making sure that everything is accounted for. It’s also a wonderful time to arrange some time together before you say “I do”.

3 Visiting a wedding fair soon? Here’s how to make the most of it…

1

Wear comfy shoes! Wedding fairs can be huge, especially the national shows, so it’s a long day on your feet. Wear comfortable flats that you know won’t give you blisters. If you want to try on wedding dresses, you can always bring a pair of heels in your bag.

2

Speaking of bags, be sure to bring a large bag with a comfortable strap, as you’ll be getting lots of magazines, samples and leaflets on the day to carry around with you.

GfB The Wedding Directory 2019-20

Make sure you bring the right people with you. Wedding fairs make for the perfect girly day out, but if you have a large bridal party, you may not want to bring all the bridesmaids. The maid of honour and the mother of the bride are perfect wedding fair companions, and we also recommend bringing the groom along. That way you can make any decisions together.

4 5

Plan ahead. Take a look at who’s going to be attending the fair and make a note of which suppliers you want to visit, so you can plan a strategy.

Make sure your ducks are in a row financially. Many wedding fair suppliers will have great offers and discounts available to attendees, but you may have to be prepared to put down a deposit on the day.
