ongratulations, you’re engaged! Now comes the exciting part: Planning your big day. But, before you get carried away with fantasies about the wedding you’ve been dreaming of, we’re here to make everything a little easier for you. From finding the perfect venue to creating the all-important guestlist, some of the biggest decisions you make will happen in the early planning stages. So, to make sure your wedding is as beautiful as you imagine it to be, we’ve created this simple checklist to help you every step of the way on your wedding planning journey. First things first, before you even think about the details, you’ll need to decide on a budget. Sit down with your partner and think practically about how much money you’re able and willing to spend on your wedding. After you’ve thought about how much cash you want to splash, it’s time for the tricky bit: Working out which lucky people get to

ongratulations! You’ve said ‘yes’, and started on the exciting path towards married life together. However, wedding planning (and the pressure to start quickly) can easily get overwhelming, so we’ve created a handy list to help get you started…
Get your Ring Sized and Insured First things first - if you haven’t already, make sure your engagement ring fits you perfectly, and is insured. If this means having it resized, then do this ASAP, as a ring that’s too big may slip off your finger and be lost. You should 14
also make sure you add your engagement ring to your home content insurance, or look into specific jewellery insurance to make sure that you’re covered in case anything ever happened to your beautiful new ring.
Chat About Your Priorities Before you can start to make wedding decisions, you need to make sure you and your new fiance are both on the same page. Do you want a short or a long engagement? A wedding in the UK or abroad? A large gathering or an intimate celebration? www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
We’d l o v e to help y o u th r ou gh y weddin our g plan ning jo f ro m s u r n ey t a r t to finish, not do s o w hy w nl o a d yo u r online F R EE weddin g plan today? ner Sig n u g ui d e s p at f o r b ri d es.co.u k/ planne r!
Something casual or all-out elegance? Make a list of the things that are most important to you when it comes to planning, and refer back to these if you ever feel overwhelmed.
Set Your Budget Your wedding budget is one of the most important things to get sorted early, and it’s vital that you talk figures. For some people, a ‘budget’ wedding may cost £1,000, and for others it may cost £10,000, so make sure you’re on the same wavelength. Once you know your magic number, discuss how you’re going to pay. Are you going to save up before the big day, ask for help from family, or look into a personal loan? Be sure you have a plan before paying for anything.
Get Inspired Now comes the fun part! Once you’ve decided roughly what kind of wedding you’re thinking of, and how much you want to spend, you can start getting inspired. Start a Pinterest board (if you haven’t already!), look up real weddings for real-life inspiration, and follow all your favourite wedding websites on social media. (Psst - we’re @guidesforbrides!) GfB The Wedding Directory 2019
Get Key Suppliers Sorted First When it comes to actually starting to book your suppliers, then the most important one to sort first is, of course, your wedding venue. Once you have this booked and the date is set, then you’ll find the rest of the process simpler. Next on the list should be your photographer, as they often get booked up far in advance and can only do a limited number of weddings, and your catering if it’s not being provided by your venue. You should also book anything you have your heart absolutely set on - if you’re desperate to get a certain type of band, or book a specific makeup artist, then do it sooner rather than later. Once these important suppliers are booked, you can have fun choosing the rest! 15

A quintessential English wedding at the Tythe Barn.
Kat & Andy Photography Mark Lord Photography
K
at and Andy spent two years planning their stunning outdoor wedding at The Tythe Barn, which was made all the more amazing by the fact that they were over 10,000 miles away at the time! This happy couple live in Sydney but wanted to plan a quintessential English wedding with their families in Oxfordshire, so they planned everything from afar. The only thing Kat bought in Australia was her elegant Maggie Sottero wedding dress, which she bought in Sydney when her mum flew over for a visit. The bride and groom fell in love with pictures of The Tythe Barn online, and when they came to England for a venue visit, it exceeded their expectations! “It was beautiful while still being modest, and was the perfect size for our small numbers,” says Kat. “The staff were incredible, and we felt like we were in safe hands.”
A ‘Table Top Picnic’ wedding breakfast. 20
Kat and Andy chose a silver and blue colour scheme for their October wedding day - they even had blue and silver ribbons during their handfasting ceremony, which took place outside in front of the barn doors. The Flower Shed Oxford created the relaxed bouquets and flower arrangements www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
M oment s “As I walked down the garden aisle, I saw so many familiar faces that I hadn’t seen since our last visit to the UK – and then my eyes fell on Andy who had the proudest smile on his face”. using ivory roses, lilies and gypsophila, as well as plenty of foliage and silver-blue eucalyptus. For the wedding breakfast, guests enjoyed The Tythe Barn’s Table Top Picnic, which included casual sharing dishes for everyone to try. In the evening, instead of evening food, Kat and Andy chose to serve their guests delicious ice cream cones, which were a huge hit. In the evening, indie rock and pop band We Three kept everyone dancing with their live sets, and there was a photo booth that Kat and Andy had filled with Australian-inspired props to remind them of home. The Bodleian Libraries Set in the heart of the dreaming spires, The Bodleian Libraries is a historic venue steeped in romance and elegance. With architecture dating back to 1488, The Bodleian is one of the most iconic buildings in Oxford, and now offers couples the chance to tie the knot in some of its grandest and most memorable rooms. The Divinity School is a masterpiece of late gothic architecture with a magnificent stone carved ceiling, and can seat up to 120 guests for a seated dinner or a civil ceremony. Adjoining the Divinity School, Convocation House is a 17th-century building that features a fan-vaulted ceiling, fine woodwork and fixed wooden benches providing chapel-style seating for your guests. The Convocation House is ideal for civil ceremonies of up to 100 guests, or intimate seated dinners of up to 30. Why not combine the historic setting of your ceremony and wedding breakfast with a modern drinks reception? Blackwell Hall is a modern, flexible space for large wedding receptions, and the roof terrace offers spectacular views over Oxford’s historic rooftops that’s sure to wow your guests. 24

The city of Oxford is home to some incredible wedding venues with a real sense of history and charm. Here are just three of our favourite city centre picks...
©Gabrielle Mcmillan
Oxford Town Hall First opened by the Prince of Wales in 1897, Oxford Town Hall is a truly unique venue when it comes to history. This Victorian Grade II* listed building has been everything from a public library to a WWI hospital to a police station (in fact, you can still visit some of the cells!), and has hosted visitors ranging from The Rolling Stones to Nelson Mandela. These days it hosts amazing wedding ceremonies and receptions of every size and style. GfB The Wedding Directory 2019
Oxford Town Hall offers couples five amazing wedding spaces, from the grand Main Hall which can comfortably seat 650 guests for a civil ceremony or 300 for dinner, to the intimate wood-panelled St Aldate’s Room which holds 40 guests for a ceremony or 30 for a seated dinner. Whatever size wedding you’re having, Oxford Town Hall has the perfect space for you. With its unbeatable location right in the city centre, Oxford Town Hall combines the best elements of an elegant city wedding venue with the historic grandeur of a British stately home. 25
Macdonald Randolph Hotel Not only is the Macdonald Randolph Hotel the only 5-star hotel in Oxford, but it’s also one of the city’s oldest and most renowned venues. Originally built in 1864, this Grade II* listed building was opened ahead of a visit from the Prince and Princess of Wales to Oxford, as there was nowhere in the city grand enough to house them. Today, the hotel has had several modern extensions and refurbishments, but all in keeping with its original Victorian heritage. The Macdonald Randolph Hotel has three elegant function rooms that are ideal for more 26
intimate weddings, as they can seat between 6 and 30 guests, as well as their stunning Ballroom which is suitable for up to 228 guests. Between the glittering chandeliers (which are exact replicas of those on the Titanic), high ceilings and private bar, The Ballroom makes for a glamorous wedding space for your big day. After the last of the dancing is finished, you and your guests can retire to one of the beautifully decorated rooms or suites in the hotel, or even relax in the tranquil Elemis spa. It’s the perfect way to unwind after your big day. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

S
o, you’ve booked the perfect venue and popped the big question to your bridesmaids and now it’s time to snap up your favourite suppliers. This crucial stage of wedding planning can be stressful, but it’s important that you start early (ideally 9-12 months before the big day!) so you can get all of the suppliers you want. The key to booking suppliers is to know what you’re looking for, so make sure you have an idea of what you want before you get started. We recommend attending local wedding fairs to get inspired (turn to the back of the guide for local wedding fairs). The first supplier that you should think about booking is your photographer and any other supplier that can only do one wedding per day. When it comes to booking your transport, a lot of brides already have an idea of how they want to arrive at their venue. So, whether it’s a gorgeous vintage car, or a stylish limousine, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Other key suppliers

L
oved-up couple James and Charlotte tied the knot at the beautiful St James’ Church on Beauchamp Lane, before following up with an amazing reception at one of Oxfordshire’s quirkiest wedding venues, The Crazy Bear in Stadhampton. After two years of dating and a further two years of wedding planning, Charlotte and James chose a navy, pale pink and silver theme for their June day. The eight bridesmaids looked stunning in their strapless maxi dresses, and the groomsmen and groom wore sharp navy suits from Walters, Oxford. Charlotte made for a beautiful bride in her lace fit and flare gown by Essense of Australia, which she found at Butterfly Bridal Boutique in Bicester.

The couple fell in love with The Crazy Bear for their reception thanks to the quirky decor, and it made a fabulous location for their wedding breakfast and evening party. For the meal, guests were treated to soup, charcuterie or potted crab and shrimps for starters, delicious beef, chicken or salmon roast dinners for main, and meringues, cheese boards or a Crazy Bear ‘Bellini’ dessert to finish. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

The party really got started in the evening, with the bride and groom leading a barn dance for their guests in the Glasshouse. Everyone headed outside to enjoy sparklers and an amazing fireworks display, before dancing the night away to music provided by Domino Disco.

Personalise Your Wedding Transport
© Squibb Photography
We spoke to Vintage Wedding Day to find out more about picking the perfect transport for your big day...
Your wedding day is one of the most memorable days of your life and travelling to your ceremony is a truly exciting part of the day. Your wedding transport sets the tone and feel of your wedding and reflects you, your personality and style. From the moment you are picked up with your nearest and dearest, your wedding journey really begins; full of emotions and excitement, your wedding transport enhances all of these feelings and leaves long lasting memories. There are many ways to customise wedding transport depending what it is: from beautiful cars to vintage buses and from horse drawn carriages to tractors. Each type of wedding transport can be customised in whatever way the bride and groom want from ribbons, bows and flowers that match the couple’s colour scheme, to more bespoke touches such as a style or theme. The wedding transport says a lot about the couple and gives a glimpse into them. 54
Our beautiful and iconic Volkswagen Campervans can be personalised to the wedding couple’s taste, in any way. And they were designed to transport everyone: brides and bridesmaids always have room for their dresses; flower girls and page boys love arriving in style and the groom and the best men love the classic sound of an air-cooled VW designed by Porsche.
www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
We love getting to know the couple and learning about their journey together to help personalise their wedding transport. Some upcoming requests are: a classic VW “Surf Bus” as the couple are keen divers and surfers; a “Country Barn VW” as the couple’s theme includes hessian, rustic and vintage chic touches and a “Campervan Christmas VW” because the couple love Christmas and get married on the 23rd December! Anything is possible in our Volkswagen Campervans. Visit vintageweddingday.com to enquire.

How to plan the best Wedding Party
EVER!
Your evening reception is the time to let your hair down and party with your loved ones - but how can you make sure everyone is having an amazing time? We spoke to Matt from Visually Sound Events to get his top tips... Q. Any tips for couples choosing their playlist? A. When choosing your songs, if you want a busy dancefloor keep your requests relatively mainstream and consider all your guests. It is brilliant to get a few genres/ decades/specific songs that you as a couple love but it is very important to remember that for you to have a good time, your guests have to have a good time too. Q. How can lighting transform a venue for a fantastic party? A. Lighting is so important to create the best atmosphere for your party and it’s a great way to change the look of your venue. If you have your wedding breakfast in the same area you can really change the look and create a wow factor when guests return for the first dance. We use uplighting, fairy and festoon lights to subtly enhance. Our DJ setups again are tidy and stylish, and we work closely with photographers so there is no harsh lighting to spoil your pictures. Plus wherever possible I set up a giant mirror ball… in my opinion you can’t have a party without one!
56
Q. How can you get around a noise limit and still have a great reception? A. Some residential venues are forced to have sound limiters. If you are really worried about the noise levels how about booking our silent disco to finish your day? Everyone gets a pair of headphones and I provide three channels of music so you have a choice. It’s so much fun - but sometimes the singing is louder than the music would have been! Now in collaboration with

An Outdoor Ceremony Wedding in September at Caswell House.

harlotte and James were lucky enough to have brilliant sunshine for their September wedding, as they tied the knot in a gorgeous outdoor ceremony at Caswell House. Bride Charlotte looked amazing coming down the aisle in her strapless lace Art Couture gown, which she purchased at Opulence & Grace in Sussex. Her two bridesmaids wore blush pink multiway dresses from TFNC, and the groom and his groomsmen wore classic blue suits with pink ties to match.
Blush pink, lilac and gold wedding. 58
The couple chose a colour scheme of dusty pink and rose gold as they are Charlotte’s favourite colours. Their stationer Lou Paper matched this scheme perfectly with beautiful watercolour-style stationery displayed throughout the day, and florist Classic Flowers created arrangements of blush pink and lilac roses, gypsophila and eucalyptus to complement the scheme. Charlotte and James even gave personalised pink sticks of rock as their wedding favours, as a nod to the bride’s hometown of Brighton. After a heartfelt ceremony, the guests enjoyed a delicious threecourse meal prepared by Caswell House’s in-house catering. The menu included asparagus, www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
feta and tomato tart, chargrilled chicken with lemon and thyme sauce, and strawberry popping candy cheesecake with a miniature bottle of raspberry milkshake for dessert. As the sun set on the evening reception, James and Charlotte’s guests played garden games and sampled delicious ice cream cones from a vintage ice cream trike, while the newlyweds had their golden hour photos taken by the talented David Bostock. After the big day, Charlotte and James jetted off on a fantastic dual-centre honeymoon to Mauritius and Dubai - the perfect start to married life! C harlotte’s bo uq ue t

Trends, Ideas & Inspiration for 2019
Feathers For real old-school glamour, embrace feathers this season. Whether it’s a flowing ostrich feather skirt, fluttery feather trims on sleeves or cozy feather cover-ups, feathers add beautiful texture to any wedding dress. We’ve also seen cleverly cut feathereffect fabric skirts, which is perfect for brides who want the lighter-than-air look without the use of actual feathers.

Bows A sweet detail we see cropping up time and time again is bows! From chic pussy-bow details tied at the neck to retro, kitschy embellishments or dreamy tulle bows tied at the back, it looks like designers are falling in love with bows all over again for 2019.

Sheer and nude effect gowns were a popular trend for 2018, and we can see it going strong into 2019. Practically every collection at London Bridal Week included nude, blush and champagne-coloured liners, combined with sheer bodices and cut-outs for a daring ‘naked’ effect Take it one step further with flowing sheer lace skirts - we love this look for destination brides.

Brides have been wanting to customise their looks more and more in recent years, and bridal brands are designing to reflect that. We’re expecting to see plenty of toppers, capes, overskirts and detachable trains this year, all of which are designed to give wedding dresses a new look that’s easily customised to each bride. This trend is also extending to bridal accessories too think embroidered veils, hand-painted shoes and initial clutches.

It’s official – blue is the new blush! Pastel shades are appearing in more and more bridal collections, with pale blue being the most popular. We’ve seen bridal gowns ranging from the lightest of baby blues to deeper, steelier shades, and it works with embroidered or applique detail too. If this trend appeals to you, why not have your ‘something blue’ be your dress?!

Gold Savin London - credit lucalatrofa.com
This is another trend that’s been up and coming since last season, and it’s still going strong for 2019 – partly thanks to Meghan Markle and her stunning high neck reception dress from Stella McCartney. Whether you wear it with a racerback and bare shoulders or go for a Victorianainspired high neck and long sleeve combo, this bridal trend isn’t going anywhere.
Gold is by far the standout metallic shade of the season. From gold embroidery and brocade to sequins, glitter and beading, this trend is coming up golden - simply add metallic accessories for the full metallic effect.

Your guide to wedding hats...
W
hen you’re a mother of the bride or groom, an important member of the wedding party, or even a bride interested in wearing a hat instead of the traditional veil, then it’s key to make sure you’re getting the perfect hat for you. It may be that this is the first formal hat you’ve worn - and that’s absolutely fine! “Most customers that we work with are out of their comfort zone, as they don’t often wear hats,” says Gillian from The Hat Box. “We help guide them to the right style, shape and colour for them, and we’re happy to take as long as it needs to get this absolutely right and make sure the customer is happy. After all, they’re an important part of the bridal party and the pictures will be around forever!” Wherever the wedding you’re attending is, it’s often easier to pick your outfit first so that your milliner can help you make the best choice. “Generally the client comes to the boutique with their chosen outfit, and we then work with them to ensure the correct colouring and styling that suits them, the outfit and the occasion,” explains Craig from Louise Claire Millinery.
72
Picking the right style of hat will depend on your preference, your outfit and the formality of your wedding, but there are also wedding hat trends that may inspire you! “Royal weddings and occasions have a big influence on hat fashion in particular,” Craig says. “As we have seen from Meghan and Eugenie’s weddings, discs are proving very popular, along with pill boxes and elaborate small headpieces.” So you’ve picked the style, but what about the colour? “When it comes to colour, we often recommend that the hat match the outfit itself, and then the bag and shoes are in a different - but complementary - colour,” advises Gillian. “Some customers prefer to www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
“Visiting an experienced milliner who understands face shapes, hair and hat styles is imperative,” agrees Lucy of Lucy Bowler Millinery & Hilary’s Hat Hire. “They will be able to reassure you all these points are considered, meaning you can relax and enjoy your day knowing your hat is sitting where it should be and that you look fabulous from all angles! Hat hire can cost as little £15 for a week, but if you can’t find the perfect match for you, then you can always look into bespoke options. Your chosen milliner will often arrange a private consultation and then create something unique to you to perfectly match your occasion, but we recommend having your consultation at least a month in advance to give yourself plenty of time. If you’re on a shorter time frame than this, don’t panic! “If you’re hiring you will need to make a hat reservation, so ideally you want as much choice as possible, but don’t be put off wearing a hat if you have left it a little late,” says Lucy. “We once found the perfect hat for mother of the bride the day before the wedding!”
have everything matching, but we think a little bit of contrast works well. We also look at the mother’s complexion to select the right shade to flatter her, but the colour palette that we work in includes literally hundreds of shades, so there’s always plenty of options for everyone.” GfB The Wedding Directory 2019

Body Prep for the Big Day –
without losing your mind…
I
t’s an unfortunate truth that brides often feel under immense pressure to lose weight or drastically change their looks before the big day, which leads to unnecessary stress and unhealthy yo-yodieting in the lead up to the wedding. Even if you do want to slim down or tone up before the big day, doing this healthily and in a safe time frame is key to staying sane during your engagement. Here are our top tips for healthy and happy wedding body prep…
76
Be realistic, and plan in advance These two go hand in hand. If you’re carrying a few extra pounds than you would be usually, or you’re a little more out of shape, then it makes perfect sense to want to be at your best for your wedding day. However, you shouldn’t strive to completely transform the look of your body, or get down to a target weight that you haven’t been since you were a teenager - all this does is set unrealistic goals for yourself, and then you’ll feel angry and upset when you can’t achieve them. If you want to do some body prep before the wedding, then give yourself as much time as possible so you can make small, healthy changes and don’t end up starving yourself on a crash diet or exhausting yourself at the gym.
www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
Exercise for fun Wedding planning is exhausting enough without wearing yourself out by spending hours at the gym. If you’re already a gym bunny, then that’s great, and you can just up your routine or join a new class. However, if you usually hate exercise, then now’s not the time to plough money into an expensive new gym membership. Instead, why not start taking a dance class with your fiance? You’ll learn some moves for your first dance and drop the pounds at the same time! Alternatively, try something like yoga or pilates, which focuses on the mind as much as the body and can help you settle nervous energy. Even walking can be beneficial, as exercise is proven to help stress - just make sure you’re doing it to feel healthier and happier, not to squeeze into a wedding dress. Speaking of which...
Buy a dress you feel happy in Whatever you do, don’t buy a wedding dress that you don’t 100% love with the aim of slimming into it. If you don’t love the way you look in it on the first try, then chances are you’re not going to love it when it comes to the fitting - and by that point, it will be too late. Instead, buy a dress that you love the look of now, and then any slimming down or toning up you do between now and then will be a nice bonus when it comes to the fitting.
Avoid short-term fixes Sadly, some companies will prey on brides who feel under pressure to lose weight by selling them quick fixes and detoxes. Don’t fall for these scams and miracle diets, as they’re often too good to be true, and will leave you feeling unhealthy, unhappy and out of pocket. Making healthy lifestyle changes and losing a maximum of 2lb a week is the best way to slim down - after all, weight that comes off slowly is more likely to stay off. How to choose the best
Wedding Ring For You You’ll wear your wedding ring for the rest of your life, so it’s important to get it right! We spoke to Tom from Lover’s Rock Diamonds to get his top tips on picking the perfect wedding ring…
O
nce your wedding is over, your rings are one of the few things you will be left with forever, so make sure you leave enough time to consider your options and make the right choice. Ideally, I would recommend no less than 6 months before your wedding day which leaves plenty of time to ensure you are happy with everything and sizing is correct. Wedding rings fall into three main categories: plain classic bands, diamond set and shaped. Plain wedding rings are available in several profiles, from traditional court, modern court and D shape. Diamond set wedding bands are particularly popular for those wanting that bit of extra sparkle, and include glamourous claw set designs and grain set designs to the sophisticated channel set diamond ring.
Unique and elaborate engagement ring designs often require a shaped wedding ring designed to fit around the setting of the engagement ring. Pre-existing shaped ring designs may fit your engagement ring; however a bespoke custom made option is often the most popular solution as your wedding ring will be designed specifically to fit and lock in tightly to your engagement ring.
At Lover’s Rock we can create bespoke wedding rings to match your engagement ring. Whether you would like to recreate an existing design or create a ring completely unique to your requirements, our team of designers will create exactly what you need in as little as 6 weeks.
Our beautiful photographs are courtsey of Lover’s Rock

You may have some family heirloom jewellery that carries a lot of sentimental value, however, you know you just won’t wear it. In this case, we can remodel it by incorporating it into a new ring design or melt it down and reuse the diamonds/gemstones to transform it into a stunning new ring that you will love wearing. Not only is this a great way of keeping the sentimental value, it also helps keep your costs down!

he big day is getting closer, so it’s time to begin organising the personal touches. These suppliers are the ones who are going to make your wedding day feel special to you, and help you bring your vision to life. This is a great time to think about booking your florist. From white winter florals, to bright summer pastels, there are so many beautiful options for your wedding flowers, so choosing the right florist is a big decision. It’s also time to choose your wedding cake, which means one thing, cake tastings! Most couples have a great time choosing their perfect cake, so make sure to prioritise this fun step. Whilst we’re thinking about food, we recommend organising your menu at this time. With 8 weeks to go you can finally send out your invitations! Manage your RSVPs online with a personal wedding website:

ou’ve sorted out all the big things and it’s time to focus on the finishing touches. It’s often said that it’s the little details that make a wedding stand out from the crowd, so spend a little time organising the things that you’ve left until last.Whether it’s gifts for the bridal party and parents, or confirming the details with your suppliers, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a touch more organised. To start with, why not organise your table plan for the wedding breakfast, or write a speech that won’t leave a dry eye in the house? Whilst you’re putting the last little bits together, a lot of brides choose to have a trial run of their makeup during this time. This is a great way to ensure that your bridal look is exactly what you envisaged. We also encourage making sure that all your balances

our wedding is drawing near and excitement is in the air. You’ve spent so long organising every little detail and making sure that this day will be everything you dreamed it to be, and now it’s time to make sure everything is good to go. Some couples find the last week the most stressful, but try to relax and enjoy every single moment. Use this time as an opportunity to ensure that you have everything you’ll need with you on the day. No bride wants to spend her wedding morning frantically searching for her veil, so spend some time making sure that everything is accounted for. It’s also a wonderful time to arrange some time together before you say “I do”.
