ongratulations, you’re engaged! Now comes the exciting part: Planning your big day. But, before you get carried away with fantasies about the wedding you’ve been dreaming of, we’re here to make everything a little easier for you. From finding the perfect venue to creating the all-important guestlist, some of the biggest decisions you make will happen in the early planning stages. So, to make sure your wedding is as beautiful as you imagine it to be, we’ve created this simple checklist to help you every step of the way on your wedding planning journey. First things first, before you even think about the details, you’ll need to decide on a budget. Sit down with your partner and think practically about how much money you’re able and willing to spend on your wedding. After you’ve thought about how much cash you want to splash, it’s time for the tricky bit: Working out which lucky people get to

Once this is sorted, you can begin the search for the venue of your dreams, and even think about who you’re going to choose to be involved in the ceremony itself.

If you’re feeling on edge about the cost of a wedding, don’t worry, it’s totally normal! Couples can often be too focused on prices and end up compromising on areas of their wedding that they loved at the beginning. Our savvy pointers will help you stay within your budget, keep calm and find ways to incorporate everything you want for your big day. 14

How to be a Savvy Bride 2019 Pinterest is a great way to follow trends and gather inspiration for your big day. If you don’t have it already downloading it is an absolute must. It will soon become your best friend. Pinterest allows you to pin your favourite images, build a board and even share your ideas. This is a nice way to involve your mum, bridesmaids and friends in the wedding planning process, plus it’s free!

Being organised is one of the most important elements in order to stay savvy. If you love spreadsheets, you’re going to be in your element! However, if spreadsheets aren’t your thing and you want someone to do the hard work for you, sign up for the free online Guides for Brides Wedding Planner. You can work through a checklist in the lead up, manage your suppliers and quotes, organise a guest list and table plan, all while keeping track of your budget! www.guidesforbrides.co.uk/wedding-planner

It sounds cheeky but everyone does it! Have a sneak peek at other people’s weddings and see what it is you like about them and what worked well for them. The perfect place to do this is our Real Weddings section, where we feature endless beautiful weddings, oozing inspiration.

A personal touch is what makes a wedding your own. Being a DIY bride is no bad thing and can end up saving you hundreds of pounds! Friends and family are often happy to help, so why not organise a night in for you and your nearest and dearest to get creative! www.guidesforbrides.co.uk/find/wedding-greatideas-and-vintage A massive trend this year is couples creating their own wedding website. You can add your engagement story, collect your RSVP’s, share the menu choices and order of the day, all with your guests! You don’t even need to send physical invites but ‘e-versions’ – a great way to save on stationery costs.

Choosing Your

Dream Wedding Venue From Barns to Stately Homes If you’re hitting the road to ‘I do’, with no idea of what kind of wedding venue would suit your tastes, this guide can help! Here are some of the most popular wedding venue types and who it would be suitable for, so you have a good idea of where to start looking for your dream venue.

Hotel Wedding Venues Hotel wedding venues come with all the mod cons, often boasting luxurious rooms, on-site catering and acres of breathtaking grounds, with expert staff on hand catering to your every whim and desire. Plenty of hotels offer easily customisable wedding packages to make wedding planning as easy as possible, and your guests can easily retire to their rooms after dancing the night away only to meet you for a delicious breakfast the next morning.

Barn Wedding Venues Barns are a classic choice for an English wedding, as we have so many beautiful barn wedding venues throughout the UK. With their gorgeous rustic feel and wooden interiors, barns are perfect for couples who want something relaxed yet romantic. Enjoy the countryside views, beams strewn with fairy lights and bunting and beautiful photo opportunities, all while enjoying modern heating and sound systems. 22

Country House Wedding Venues For glamorous brides who want to feel like something out of a fairytale, you can’t go wrong with an elegant country house wedding venue. Country houses and stately homes have stunning spaces for both wedding ceremonies and receptions, so if you’ve always dreamed of tying the knot in a picture gallery or orangery before enjoying an evening reception in the ballroom, then a country house may be the ideal wedding venue for you.

Outdoor Wedding Venues When it comes to outdoor wedding venues, the possibilities are endless. Ranging from a botanical garden wedding to a relaxed beach celebration by the sea, if you’re a bride that’s at one with nature, this type of wedding venue is for you. So, swap your wedding shoes for cowboy boots or flip-flops and get hitched in the great outdoors!

J

uliana and James tied the knot on a sunny June day at The Elvetham, a stunning 19th century hotel in the heart of the Hampshire countryside. James had proposed to Juliana 15 months prior when he’d whisked her away on a surprise trip to Vienna to watch the ballet at the Vienna Opera House. On the first morning there, he ordered a champagne breakfast to the suite, and popped the question - and the rest is history! Their wedding was a beautiful summer day that filled The Elvetham. The ceremony took place in the grand, light-filled Oak Room, followed by drinks on the front lawn and a delicious wedding breakfast in The Library of oriental duck, beef fillet and smoked garlic mash, and Elvetham Eton mess.

28

Their wedding breakfast was held in The Library.

The incredible flowers were a focal point of the day. Leigh Chappell Flowers filled the venue with wildflower arrangements, made with roses, dahlias, foxgloves, ferns and foliage and Simply Cake made a chic buttercream design decorated with fresh flowers in blush, coral and ivory. The flowers popped beautifully against the bridesmaids’ forest green and sage dresses, and Juliana looked www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

amazing with her wild bouquet and flowing openbacked gown from Something Blue. In the evening, the guests enjoyed dancing in the elegant Conservatory, with music provided by Accolade DJs - in fact, the dance party was one of the bride’s favourite parts of the day!

S

o, you’ve booked the perfect venue and popped the big question to your bridesmaids and now it’s time to snap up your favourite suppliers. This crucial stage of wedding planning can be stressful, but it’s important that you start early (ideally 9-12 months before the big day!) so you can get all of the suppliers you want. The key to booking suppliers is to know what you’re looking for, so make sure you have an idea of what you want before you get started. We recommend attending local wedding fairs to get inspired (turn to the back of the guide for local wedding fairs). The first supplier that you should think about booking is your photographer and any other supplier that can only do one wedding per day. When it comes to booking your transport, a lot of brides already have an idea of how they want to arrive at their venue. So, whether it’s a gorgeous vintage car, or a stylish limousine, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Other key suppliers

An elegant pink and navy wedding at Millbridge Court.

Alex &Chris Photography Richard Galloway Photography

A

fter six happy years together and a romantic Valentine’s Day proposal (much to the delight of their two children!), Alex and Chris tied the knot in a stunning July wedding at Millbridge Court in Surrey. The ceremony took place in the light and airy Barn, with Alex walking down the aisle in a strapless Augusta Jones A-line gown with crystal beaded belt. “It was the first dress I tried on and loved the simplicity of the finish,” says Alex. The three mini bridesmaids wore pale pink satin dresses, while the four adult bridesmaids looked beautiful in ruched navy dresses that complemented the colour scheme perfectly. All the ladies carried gorgeous bouquets of pink peonies and roses that were put together by the bride’s mum and her friend.

The bride’s cousin, Kate made the amazing navy and silver wedding cake. 58

The food for the wedding breakfast was part of a menu selected by Kalm Kitchen, and was beautifully presented in sharing platters with each dish served with flowers to decorate. “The reception was great fun and you could hear the laughter continuously across the hall with everyone having fun,” says Alex. The amazing navy and silver wedding cake was made by the bride’s cousin, Kate. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

M oment s “When Chris said I do, he had tears in his eyes. The feeling of all the love in the room at that moment will stay with me forever!” Jukebox Band got everyone up and dancing for the evening reception, and Richard Galloway was on hand to capture even the wildest of dance moves!

A Spring wedding full of flowers at Loseley Park

Pippa & John Photography Laurence and Ella Photography

P

ippa and John’s story is full of romance from start to finish, from the surprise midnight proposal at The Savoy to the gorgeous Italian honeymoon on the Amalfi coast. This loved-up couple tied the knot at Pippa’s childhood church in Pirbright, Surrey, before celebrating with a traditional English country reception at the stunning Loseley Park in Guildford. The wedding breakfast was held in the light and airy Tithe Barn, and the walled gardens were the perfect place for the couple’s photos. The wedding theme was inspired by the beautiful colours and flowers of the English countryside, with a nod to the couple’s love of Italy thanks to the gold accents and lemons. The wedding favours were miniature bottles of limoncello, and the place names were actual lemons with the guests’ names pinned to them!

The place names were actual lemons! 72

Pippa looked every bit the beautiful bride in both her Sottero and Midgley gown, and the shorter Alfred Sung number that she wore for the evening dancing. “The two-piece from Sottero and Midgley was unlike anything I’d www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

ever seen before,” says the bride. “The movement in the skirt and the detail on the bodice were just stunning.” Her second dress was perfect for dancing the night away, as it mirrored the shape of the bridesmaid dresses and gave her a chance to show off her Emmy shoes! Kate Osborne from the Gorgeous Flower Company created the floral arrangements from Pippa’s favourite blooms, including pink peonies, roses, sweet peas, Lily of the Valley and trailing jasmine, which meant the bouquets smelled as good as they looked! Designer Cakes by Elle was the mastermind behind the incredible cake, which included a bellini-flavoured bottom tier as a nod to Pippa and John’s Positano honeymoon.

Dress by Wattersbride

One of the best things about wedding dresses is that they come in all shapes and sizes, so no matter your bridal style, there’s something to suit everyone. Here’s our guide to finding the perfect silhouette for your big day…

The A-line silhouette (so-called because the shape of the skirt looks like a capital A) is flattering on practically every body type, thanks to the fact that it’s fitted up top and flares out from the waist. The wider skirt gives you plenty of room to walk and dance without being too big, and the fitted bodice shows off your waist while skimming over your stomach. If you want something a little more fitted without graduating to a fit and flare, then a modified A-line flares out a little lower, at the hip rather than the waist.

Dress by Phil Collins Bridal

If you’re imagining a typical fairytale princess dress, then what you’re thinking of is probably a ballgown! The most voluminous wedding dress silhouette, a classic ballgown is fitted on the bodice, and flares out from the natural waist in a full skirt. This silhouette suits pear-shaped, hourglass and bigger busted brides, as it makes the most of your curves and still gives you a fairytale look; but it can also make apple shapes look wider. Taller brides will be able to pull off the large skirt, but petite brides may look swamped, so we’d recommend steering clear if you’re under 5’3”!

GfB The Wedding Directory 2019

Dress by Lyn Ashworth, Daydreamer Collection

Dress by Willowby

It’s a classic for a reason!

If you love the curve-hugging cut of the mermaid but are worried about it being unforgiving (or difficult to walk in!), then we recommend you try a gorgeous fit and flare gown. The fit and flare is also known as a trumpet silhouette, and is becoming more and more popular with brides thanks to its flattering cut. Unlike a mermaid wedding dress, the skirt on a fit and flare starts at the mid-thigh, rather than below the knee, which gives you more room to move as well as a more forgiving cut on the thigh and a more understated silhouette.

79

80

Main image & insert - Dresses by Willowby

Dress by Dando London

For a flowing Grecian style or a relaxed boho vibe, you’ll definitely be looking at a column wedding dress. As the name suggests, the skirt on a column is straight and falls away from the body, rather than being fitted, so it’s one of the most comfortable wedding dress styles to wear on the big day. This flowing style works perfectly on petite brides and apple shapes (particularly when paired with an empire line cut), but isn’t the best cut for pear-shaped brides. Not to be confused with the sheath gown, which is a sexier version of the silhouette that fits closer to the body.

Also known as a fishtail, the mermaid silhouette is closely fitted to your body and flares out from below the knee to give you that classic curvy shape. This can be a surprisingly flattering dress shape, so don’t be afraid to try one on at your boutique appointment it balances out top-heavy brides and can really highlight curvaceous figures. Petite brides will also benefit from the structure of a classic mermaid gown, but pear shapes might look more bottom heavy. Whatever your shape, this is a glamorous silhouette, so be sure to wear it with confidence and you’ll feel like you’ve walked right off the red carpet.

If you’re picking out your menswear, bear these handy tips in mind for a sharp suit… Tailors are predicting that the next big menswear trend for 2019/2020 will be a move back to the formal tailcoat. “Traditional Morning Suits are definitely increasing once more in popularity, and we’re finding that grooms like to modify this formal outfit with contemporary twists, such as a contrasting waistcoat,” says Alex of The Cotswold Tailor.

Buyvs Hire

It’s the age-old question; to buy or not to buy? Both buying and hiring your suits come with pros and cons, but often it’s a matter of your budget and the number of groomsmen you’re kitting out. The cost of hiring will always be lower, so if you have a large group of groomsmen or you’re on a tight budget, hiring may be a better option for you. If your budget can stretch to it, we recommend that the groom buy his suit, as it gives him the flexibility to have it altered for the perfect fit. “The most popular alteration by far is the slimming of the leg width,” says Alex of The Cotswold Tailor. “The current trend is to have a far narrower leg width and to have the trouser sat just on top of the shoe, rather than falling over the shoe to the heel as previously popular.” Other options include nipping in the waist of the jacket for a closer fit, and altering the sleeve length for a more bespoke cut. It can take as little as three additional wears to make purchasing and tailoring a suit financially viable, so bear this in mind when picking out your menswear.

True Blue It’s official - blue is taking over from grey as the suit shade of the moment. Ranging from traditional navy to royal blue and lighter pastels, blue can be more flattering to the skin tone than grey and can be paired with plenty of tie and pocket square colours. Blue tweed is proving incredibly popular, and a blue lounge suit with a contrasting waistcoat (such as green or grey) is a modern choice for stylish grooms.

Match your Maids When picking out colours for ties and pocket squares, looking to your bridesmaid dresses is a good start. This year has seen a revival in pastel greens such as mint and sage, while classic shades like navy and blush are still going strong. If you’re unsure, let your menswear supplier know your colour scheme and they’ll be able to advise you on what colour suit will be complementary.

Body Prep for the Big Day –

without losing your mind…

I

t’s an unfortunate truth that brides often feel under immense pressure to lose weight or drastically change their looks before the big day, which leads to unnecessary stress and unhealthy yo-yodieting in the lead up to the wedding. Even if you do want to slim down or tone up before the big day, doing this healthily and in a safe time frame is key to staying sane during your engagement. Here are our top tips for healthy and happy wedding body prep…

88

Be realistic, and plan in advance These two go hand in hand. If you’re carrying a few extra pounds than you would be usually, or you’re a little more out of shape, then it makes perfect sense to want to be at your best for your wedding day. However, you shouldn’t strive to completely transform the look of your body, or get down to a target weight that you haven’t been since you were a teenager - all this does is set unrealistic goals for yourself, and then you’ll feel angry and upset when you can’t achieve them. If you want to do some body prep before the wedding, then give yourself as much time as possible so you can make small, healthy changes and don’t end up starving yourself on a crash diet or exhausting yourself at the gym.

www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Exercise for fun Wedding planning is exhausting enough without wearing yourself out by spending hours at the gym. If you’re already a gym bunny, then that’s great, and you can just up your routine or join a new class. However, if you usually hate exercise, then now’s not the time to plough money into an expensive new gym membership. Instead, why not start taking a dance class with your fiance? You’ll learn some moves for your first dance and drop the pounds at the same time! Alternatively, try something like yoga or pilates, which focuses on the mind as much as the body and can help you settle nervous energy. Even walking can be beneficial, as exercise is proven to help stress - just make sure you’re doing it to feel healthier and happier, not to squeeze into a wedding dress. Speaking of which...

Buy a dress you feel happy in Whatever you do, don’t buy a wedding dress that you don’t 100% love with the aim of slimming into it. If you don’t love the way you look in it on the first try, then chances are you’re not going to love it when it comes to the fitting - and by that point, it will be too late. Instead, buy a dress that you love the look of now, and then any slimming down or toning up you do between now and then will be a nice bonus when it comes to the fitting.

Avoid short-term fixes Sadly, some companies will prey on brides who feel under pressure to lose weight by selling them quick fixes and detoxes. Don’t fall for these scams and miracle diets, as they’re often too good to be true, and will leave you feeling unhealthy, unhappy and out of pocket. Making healthy lifestyle changes and losing a maximum of 2lb a week is the best way to slim down - after all, weight that comes off slowly is more likely to stay off. CAKES

Here at Ann’s Designer Cakes, we believe that there can be so much more to our wedding cakes than the design of the cake.

M

any of the recipes we use in our kitchen are ones that my mother and grandmother passed down to me. However, wedding cake flavours have long been evolving from the traditional fruit cake or Victoria sponge, and this is an aspect of our cake business that we have been experimenting with in recent years.

96

We are passionate when it comes to exploring new ideas and tastes, discovering flavours from all over the world, with just one thing in common - they all taste superb. Our clients have been raving about our fun cake flavours this year, which include Pumpkin Squash, Blueberry and Champagne, and Dulce de Leche. Fig and Sesame Honey Drizzle Cake is a personal favourite of mine, using the sweet and plump Turkish figs which are seasonally available in the Autumn.

Finding Your Perfect Flavour Not only do our cake designs reflect the client’s theme and style, but we thrive on finding the best cake flavour to suit our clients. We take into account many factors to help our clients choose the perfect flavours that reflect them as a couple for their wedding day. Using our extensive range of ingredients, we listen to our clients who inspire us to create unique, mouthwatering cake flavours that cover a multitude of taste preferences.

www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

We cover everything from holistic, vegan and vegetable cakes for the more diet-conscious couple to Toffee, Bubblegum, Pistachio & Honey, Cookies & Cream and Butterscotch for the sweet lover. We can add Bailey’s Irish Cream or Tiramisu for a little kick to your cake, or Pineapple, Coconut & Passionfruit or Lush Lemon if a fruit-infused filling is what you prefer. More recently we’ve even been introducing a new range of super healthy options when it comes to our cakes, including our Aloe Vera range. The Future of Flavour We are so excited to continue to develop our skills when concocting unique and mouthwatering flavours for our clients. Whether your cake is as classically simple or as luxuriously lavish in design, we can guarantee that its filling will be bursting with flavours that you and your wedding guests will be blown away by. It’s all part of the story of the wedding cake and we are so proud to have such an important role in creating this important aspect of our couples’ special day.

T radition

al

ing n a e m flower

The tradition of the bridal bouquet started back in ancient times, when a bag of fragrant herbs was carried to ward off evil spirits. This evolved in Roman times to the bride carrying a posy to signify her fertility, and the couple would also be adorned with flower garlands to symbolise their new life together.

s

Did you know that your bridal bouquet has meaning?

During Victorian times, different flowers were assigned individual meanings (called ‘the language of flowers’), which meant lovers could communicate just by using well-chosen blooms. These associations are still used to this day, which means you might be saying more with your flowers than you think...

Flowers to include in your wedding bouquet are... * Calla Lily - Magnificent Beauty * Freesia - Innocence * Ivy - Wedded Love, Fidelity * White Lily - Virginity, Purity * Orange Blossom - Eternal Love * Orchid - Love, Magnificence * Pink Rose - Perfect Happiness * White Rose - Charm and Innocence * Red Rose - Love and Desire * Tulip - Love and Passion And those to avoid... * Begonia - Beware * Yellow Carnation - Rejection * Cyclamen - Goodbye * Geranium - Stupidity, Folly * Purple Hyacinth - Please Forgive Me * Yellow Hyacinth - Jealousy * Marigold - Cruelty * Narcissus - Egotism

ou’ve sorted out all the big things and it’s time to focus on the finishing touches. It’s often said that it’s the little details that make a wedding stand out from the crowd, so spend a little time organising the things that you’ve left until last.Whether it’s gifts for the bridal party and parents, or confirming the details with your suppliers, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a touch more organised. To start with, why not organise your table plan for the wedding breakfast, or write a speech that won’t leave a dry eye in the house? Whilst you’re putting the last little bits together, a lot of brides choose to have a trial run of their makeup during this time. This is a great way to ensure that your bridal look is exactly what you envisaged. We also encourage making sure that all your balances

Don’t Panic!

104

There’s nothing worse than getting those pre-speech jitters. Emotions are running high and you want the happy couple to be weeping with joy, not the other way around. We’ve come up with some great ideas to get you prepped and ready to give them a speech to remember. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Be Prepared Some people are happy to leave the speech writing to the last minute - it’s easy, so they say. The couple will be expecting a beautiful speech, no matter what style you go for, and to avoid any disappointment on their part writing your speech in advance is the best idea. We’d suggest giving yourself a couple of weeks at least, leaving you plenty of time to make edits.

Go for Humour If the thought of pouring your heart out for all the guests to see fills you with dread, go for comedy instead. It’s a sure fire way to get everyone on side right from the beginning, leaving you the chance at the end of your speech for all the fluffy stuff.

Make a Game Give the guests something to do during the speeches - Bingo! Sitting through a whole bunch of speeches for that long can sometimes get a little tiring, especially for the little guests, so why not give them a bingo GfB The Wedding Directory 2019

sheet with some key phrases to listen out for; ‘I’m so proud’, ‘best day of my life’, ‘the stag do’...you get the idea. Even a comedy prize for the winner will go down a storm.

Rope in the Mates If you’d prefer to have a little support in the speech, why not ask the couple if you can give the speech with another close friend or family member. You could rope in a whole group of friends to help you out if you like. People have given speeches as pairs (which can be great for comedy value) and even written songs for the occasion. There are plenty of videos out there of barbershop quartets, dance-offs, rap battles - you name it, it can be done!

Record a Video Depending how much time you have on your hands, you could let the video do the talking. It’s a nice way of allowing you to relax on the day knowing you’ve created something they’ll remember forever. Just make sure you organise a projector for the occasion. 105

our wedding is drawing near and excitement is in the air. You’ve spent so long organising every little detail and making sure that this day will be everything you dreamed it to be, and now it’s time to make sure everything is good to go. Some couples find the last week the most stressful, but try to relax and enjoy every single moment. Use this time as an opportunity to ensure that you have everything you’ll need with you on the day. No bride wants to spend her wedding morning frantically searching for her veil, so spend some time making sure that everything is accounted for. It’s also a wonderful time to arrange some time together before you say “I do”.
