Two celestial choral works and Elgar’s famous musical sketches, under the baton of renowned Russian conductor Vassily Sinaisky. Vaughan Williams’s much-loved Serenade to Music, set to words by Shakespeare, follows star-gazing lovers. Nicolai’s evocative ‘Moon Chorus’ is similarly inspired by the great bard, while Elgar drew inspiration from his friends in composing his famous Enigma Variations, a colourful collection of musical caricatures. The Nightfly Join the 2017 intake of the jazz department for a celebration of Donald Fagen’s classic album, The Nightf ly. As well as performing the work from start to finish, the evening will also feature transformations of the material, workshopped by jazz students and faculty members in the first two weeks of term. Whole Blue Sky, Face to the Wall and Fewer Emergencies is Crimp’s trilogy of short plays that make up a disturbing fairy tale world, and the nightmarish impact on the contented life of an affluent middle class family. Play House depicts the story of a volatile relationship between a young couple learning to live in their new home. Sex, money, dancing and emotional fragility test the boundaries of their love. Global Granados Marathon To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Spanish composer Enrique Granados, Guildhall pianists join with colleagues from around the world to play Granados’s complete works for piano in one day. The event starts in Melbourne at 10am GMT before the baton passes to Guildhall musicians and then to Spain, Costa Rica, Colombia and the USA. All performances will be streamed live at fimte.org. Guildhall’s contribution is a complete performance of Granados’s transcriptions of 26 sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, introduced by Professor Sir Barry Ife. Organised by FIMTE and supported by the British Spanish Society. Admission free

Canadian Brass Canadian Brass – known for their unique performance attire of formal black suits with white running shoes – round off a day at Guildhall with an evening concert which promises entertainment, spontaneity and virtuosity. Their performance includes wide-ranging repertoire from trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes to new compositions and arrangements created especially for them – all performed with the utmost dedication, skill and excellence which has led to their international reputation as one of the most popular brass ensembles today. Strings Concert
The Guildhall School welcomes Kit Downes’ ENEMY, one of the leading groups in Europe’s progressive jazz scene, for a recital masterclass. Joining Kit are bassist Petter Eldh and Guildhall professor James Maddren on drums. Based in London and Berlin, they play expressive and complex music: lightspeed rhythmic patterns and dense harmonic clusters collide in a unique and formidable combination of voices that has been described as both ‘fiercely intense’ and ‘beautifully intricate’. Guildhall Studio Orchestra With special guest Dave Arch Tonight sees the launch of the Guildhall Studio Orchestra – the first of its kind in a UK conservatoire. Genre-fluid, multi-disciplinary and progressive, it places students next to the highest level
of professional musicians in a side-byside setup, with commissioned repertoire from some of the best arrangers working today. Joining the orchestra for its launch concert is Guildhall alumnus Dave Arch – a prolific pianist, conductor, arranger and composer best known for his role as Musical Director and arranger for BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Recorded in 2016, Coming Home is Dave’s first solo album, a stimulating and diverse collection of songs rooted in jazz which takes the listener on an exciting journey through uplifting big band and orchestral compositions, retro-style rock big band, modern jazz rock, a classy melodic jazz style ballad and a tour-deforce that builds from a dreamy start to a frenetic mix of rhythms – all played live. Hallucinatio See Leadenhall in an interactive 5 minute virtual reality experience that transforms the market into a 3D digital landscape of Roman London and gaze on a virtually resurrected Basilica. Watch as the world distorts and transforms in front of your eyes, and reveals the ancient basilica that once stood on this very site – the largest of its type north of the Alps. Blood Rite From Boy Blue Entertainment and the Guildhall School comes a spectacular, digitally-animated new outdoor dance show. Set on the site of London’s Roman amphitheatre, an explosive fusion of urban dance, music and video projection transforms the facades of Guildhall Yard. Using the latest technology in motion tracking, combined with live dance and cutting edge hip-hop music, Blood Rite shows an unforgettable series of provocative scenes that both reveal the horror of the arena and celebrate the perseverance of the gladiatorial spirit. Julian Anderson Poetry Nearing Silence Ring Dance The Colour of Pomegranates Van Gogh Blue Alhambra Fantasy Guildhall musicians explore the extraordinary chamber music of composer and Guildhall professor Julian Anderson as part of the BBC’s Total Immersion day. Four chamber works span 21 years of Julian Anderson’s compositional output: The Colour of Pomegranates for alto flute and piano is the earliest work here, while Van Gogh Blue (inspired by the exuberance of many of the letters of the Dutch artist) and Ring Dance show Anderson’s most recent musical voice. Poetry Nearing Silence was inspired by the paintings of Tom Phillips which in turn were created by painting over an obscure Victorian novel: it’s a magical score full of extraordinary sounds and textures. The Flautadors The UK’s leading recorder ensemble celebrates its 20th anniversary. In this special programme, The Flautadors perform much loved pieces, from Medieval to Contemporary, and combine with a new generation of recorder players and percussionists – Guildhall students and alumni – for Renaissance masterpieces. Performed on a vast array of recorders, this promises to be a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. The Alumni Recital Series is in support of the School’s Scholarships Fund.

Menotti’s tragic – and extraordinarily topical – opera follows a political dissident on the run from the secret police. The Consul is the piece that launched Menotti’s distinguished career and won him the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1950. Swansong Devised by Iain Burnside Schwanengesang (‘Swan-Song’) is revered as Schubert’s farewell to song. Written at the end of his short life, the 14 songs complete the composer’s peerless trio of song cycles.

Malija Malija is formed of three of the finest improvisers led by Mark Lockheart, recently appointed professor of Jazz Composition and Saxophone at the School, with Danish bass virtuoso Jasper Høiby and one of Europe’s most original pianists, Liam Noble. The group describes its music as ‘weird, simple, complicated, free, tight, floaty, ugly, beautiful and heartfelt, depending on your mood’. This promises to be an inspiring day with a masterclass in the afternoon (see p27) followed by the trio in concert. Admission free
Swansong presents these 14 songs, for voice and piano, in their traditional order, interspersed with monologues from six different characters. Three are Schubert’s contemporaries; three are from later generations. Each casts fresh light, from different angles, on this collection of masterly songs, and on the genius who created them, months before his death. Swansong is the latest music theatre piece devised by renowned pianist and Guildhall professor Iain Burnside, with Guildhall singers, pianists and actors. Decoda is a New York-based chamber collective dedicated to bringing meaningful musical experiences to all audiences. As Resident Ensemble in Creative Performance at the Guildhall School, they present this imaginative programme which explores the expression and interaction of voices, from the counterpoint in Bach’s Musical Offering sonata to Crumb’s timeless evocation, Voice of the Whale. A young soldier dying in the trenches has visions of visiting his surviving family and friends still enjoying wealthy decadent lives in the early thirties. Post-Mortem was first performed in 1944 in an Austrian prisoner of war camp but it was never performed professionally in Coward’s lifetime. Written in 1930 when he was 31 years old, it is a surprisingly angry and bitter vilification of the ruling classes who seem to have learnt nothing from the mass homicide of the First World War. The Guildhall School is delighted to welcome the distinguished partnership of director Lucy Bailey and designer William Dudley in this production which explores the use of video to uncover the darker, more serious side of Coward. Cottle has been bassist of choice for a host of jazz, rock and fusion artists including Django Bates, Jim Mullen, Alan Parsons, Bill Bruford and Black Sabbath, and directs the Laurence Cottle Big Band. Maxwell Davies A Mirror of Whitening Light George Benjamin At First Light The Guildhall School’s Ubu Ensemble focuses on the classics of avant garde and experimental music. This lunchtime concert takes in two enthralling works by composers inspired by natural light. Maxwell Davies drew inspiration from the view from his Orkney home in composing the extraordinary A Mirror of Whitening Light, while George Benjamin 1982 work takes a Turner painting as its starting point: ‘what struck me… was the way in which solid objects – fields, cows and the castle itself – virtually appear to have melted under the intense sunlight’. The Nutcracker and I by Alexandra Dariescu is a new and innovative 50-minute live performance based on the magical Christmas story, for anyone who dares to dream. Alexandra inspires the audience by telling us her own story as Clara: from little girl to concert pianist and invites us to use our own imagination, to hope, work hard and never give up.
Tchaikovsky’s enchanting ballet music features throughout and includes favourites such as Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Arabian Dance, Chinese Dance, Pax de Deux, and the Flower Waltz, in 15 virtuosic arrangements by Mikhail Pletnev, Stepan Esipoff, Percy Grainger and three brand new adaptations by Gavin Sutherland.
On stage will be a grand piano, played by Dariescu herself, and ballerina Désirée Ballantyne behind a see-through gauze screen. Bringing the story to life, the projected live digital animations, co-ordinated by technical producer Sander Loonen, will follow the music
