Balm in Gilead by Lanford Wilson Joseph Blatchley director Dora Schweitzer designer Jess Bernberg lighting designer * Tom Bosworth sound designer *
‘There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole, there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.’ Is there such a balm for the dispossessed, the disenfranchised, the junkies and hookers, pimps and hustlers, johns and cons in the seedy Broadway of 1960s New York? Lanford Wilson is widely regarded as one of America’s premier playwrights. His lyric realism was influenced by Chekhov and Tennessee Williams, though his soul was formed off-Broadway, on Greenwich Village’s pocket-stages. Balm in Gilead was his first major play. FUTURE EVENTS
Sunday 9 July, 7pm Barbican Hall
For the third year running Sir Simon Rattle presents the premiere performance of a new children’s opera with the LSO and Guildhall School musicians. Andrew Norman’s A Trip to the Moon takes inspiration from Georges Méliès’ seminal 1902 silent film of the same name and follows a band of bumbling astronomers as they explore the moon, attempt to fix their broken rocket, and meet a community of Selenites, mysterious moon people who are facing a perilous threat of their own. The second half features a side-by-side performance of Sibelius’ resplendent Second Symphony, in which the full LSO is joined by musicians from the Guildhall School’s ground-breaking Orchestral Artistry programme run in association with the LSO. Tickets: £10-£42, available from the Barbican Box Office: 020 7638 8891 barbican.org.uk.
