The Guildhall School and Barbican have come together to offer an inspirational week of creative activities for aspiring young performers. Participants will gain hands-on experience of music, film, drama, dance and digital, with expert guidance from practicing artists and creative leaders. No experience is necessary, but if you’ve got specific skills, talents or interests make sure you let us know! In association with

This short course is for young artists from a range of music and theatre backgrounds. It will help you to develop your performance skills while collaborating across art forms to create new work. Participants will have the opportunity to meet likeminded young people while working with renowned Guildhall tutors and Barbican artists. This course is the perfect progression from Summer Arts Camp, and great preparation if you’re considering studying performing arts in higher education. In association with

An inspirational and intensive introduction to actor training, including class work with Guildhall staff and experienced graduates. This course is designed for various levels of experience, including beginners and those who wish to pursue full-time drama training. Through group classes and work on scenes, you will gain fundamental insights into acting in Shakespeare and modern drama.

Three weeks of stimulating training including intensive tuition, workshops and rehearsals with Guildhall’s renowned tutors. Participants work with a director and a musical director on a project exploring a selection of scenes and songs. This involves some musical staging, but the focus of the course is on the craft of acting within the context of song.

Acting in Shakespeare & Contemporary Theatre Ages 18+ 10

Dates: Monday 16 July – Friday 3 August Fee: £1,950 Residential option available

Three weeks of stimulating training in acting including intensive tuition, workshops and rehearsals with Guildhall’s renowned tutors. Explore short scenes from Shakespeare and a contemporary play and investigate the texts through group exercises and improvisation. The aim is to demystify Shakespeare and commit to truthful acting in modern drama.

Introduction to Musicianship Essential Music Theory for children and their parents Ages 11 – 18 Ages 3 – 6 & parents/carers Dates: Saturday 2 July Fee: £50 for parent/carer and child

Based on our hugely popular Junior Guildhall Kindergarten music training programme, this Saturday course provides a fun introduction to musicianship through Kodály and Eurhythmics. Musical education has been linked to an array of neurological development benefits for children, from confidence to language abilities. Delivered by Guildhall early years specialists, this course masterfully combines learning and fun for little ones and parents alike.

Musicianship Training through Kodály and Dalcroze Ages 12 – 18 Dates: Monday 23 – Friday 27 July Fee: £385 Residential option available

A unique opportunity to explore two of the most effective and highly-regarded approaches to musicianship with Guildhall’s specialist tutors. An ideal experience for 12-18 year-olds who are keen to develop their aural awareness and general musicianship skills. The course culminates in a showing for family and friends on Friday evening.

Taught by Guildhall expert tutors, this course is particularly suitable for students working towards ABRSM examinations. It is ideal if you wish to improve your theory quickly, revise for the ABRSM Grade 5 exam or if you are just interested in improving your knowledge of theory to enhance your appreciation of music.

Essential Aural Skills Ages 11 – 18 Dates: Monday 23 – Saturday 28 July Fee: £370 Residential option available

This intensive training course will help you practise aural, speed up the learning process and make your playing more expressive, while working on your listening and memorising skills. It is valuable to anyone who sings, plays or composes and wants to refine their aural skills, whether for exams or personal development.

A fantastic opportunity for young composers to develop their skills and write a piece for a small instrumental ensemble. Learn about writing for instruments and develop your ideas with guidance from a Guildhall composition tutor and input from performers, and hear your new piece performed in a special concert at the end of the course.

Singers’ Weekend This brand-new course is for young instrumentalists playing any bowed strings, wind, brass or percussion instrument. It is led by our lively team of expert Guildhall tutors, and aims to support young musicians to nurture their creativity and develop their skills in a friendly environment. With an emphasis on fun, participants will enjoy the experience of performing all types of music – from Bach to The Beatles – in a wide range of settings including orchestra, smaller ensembles, choir and jazz band. We will even create our own piece of original music, so a world premiere is guaranteed!

Brass & Percussion Week 18

Ages 11 – 18 / Grade 3+ Dates: Monday 23 – Friday 27 July Fee: £385 Residential option available

A unique opportunity to learn from Junior Guildhall’s experienced brass and percussion tutors in a friendly and supportive environment. You will explore a varied and exciting repertoire covering all areas of brass music. The course schedule includes brass ensemble, brass band, orchestral sectional and chamber group performances; instrument specific group technique classes; and individual support and advice for audition preparation. The course culminates in a concert for family and friends on Friday evening. This short course is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians to have fun improving their skills over the summer, while providing valuable preparation for those looking to audition for music college.

Residential option available

This much-loved short course is the perfect place for instrumentalists and singers of all ages and abilities to develop new skills, gain inspiration, and meet and perform with like-minded musicians. From jazz combos to rock bands, and from improvisation classes to computer music, this short course has something for everyone. Participants are organised into groups by ability, while everyone comes together for the evening tutor concerts, and can perform at our open-mic-type ‘Club’ nights. It’s a busy and vibrant week, beginning on the Sunday afternoon and finishing with a celebratory concert on Friday evening to which friends and family are invited.

A large group workshop for singers from all backgrounds, working together on jazz, gospel and world music to form a unique choir as well as to develop individual skills. While focussing on ensemble singing, this course also includes workshops on vocal development, rhythmic skills and improvising, led by Guildhall vocal tutors. No music reading necessary – everything will be learned and performed by ear!


Ages 15 – 18 / Grade 6+ Dates: Tuesday 17 – Thursday 19 July Fee: £275

Taught by some of the most experienced players and teachers in the UK, this short course will help you to develop your musical and technical ability, as well as consolidate your understanding and interpretation of oboe repertoire. Advanced Oboe is also relevant for those thinking of applying for undergraduate oboe programmes.

Singing Taster Ages 16 – 21 / Grade 6+ Dates: Monday 16 – Thursday 19 July Fee: £500 Residential option available

Led by members of the Guildhall School’s Vocal Studies department, this course will give you an insight into Guildhall’s world-leading vocal training. In addition to an introduction to singing in Italian and communicating text into song, the course will touch on body awareness and performance skills.

Contemporary A Cappella with ‘Accent’ Ages 16+ Dates: Wednesday 18 – Friday 20 July Fee: £275 Residential option available

Join internet sensation group Accent in this progressive 3-day a cappella course to develop vocal skills for ensembles in an engaging, energetic, fun and creative environment. Participants will

sing in small close-harmony groups and work on a cappella ensemble skills, while masterclasses will also be given on arranging, vocal percussion, vocal history and more.

Advanced Jazz Ages 16+ / Grade 6+ Dates: Friday 20 – Sunday 22 July Fee: £310

This 3-day course, run by Guildhall jazz tutors, includes small band sessions where participants get to experiment with and extend their knowledge of different jazz techniques. What’s more, with our signature Club nights and a concert for family and friends there are plenty of opportunities for performance. It is a great opportunity to meet and play with like-minded musicians. The course is also relevant to those thinking of applying to undergraduate or postgraduate jazz programmes.

Violin Masterclass Ages 18+ Dates: Sunday 15 – Friday 20 July Fee: £445

This intensive 7-day course is directed by Guildhall School Violin Professor Jacqueline Ross, and is designed for advanced violinists who are preparing for competitions, auditions and concerts. The course is suitable for advanced conservatoire level students.

This course offers an introduction to the fascinating world of costume and the skills required to manage a costume department. Working with a Guildhall costume designer, you will develop a basic garment by exploring methods of research, design and realisation.

Introduction to Hair, Wigs and Make-up for Theatre Ages 16+ Dates: Monday 23 – Tuesday 24 July Fee: £195 22

This intensive course offers an introduction to the world of the hair and make-up department within the theatre industry through practical demonstration and workshops. Sessions include period hair styles and facial hair, period make-up, wig styling and maintenance, and special effects make-up.

Practical Theatre Sound Design Ages 16+ Dates: Monday 16 – Friday 20 July Fee: £495 Residential option available

This hands-on course introduces you to the practical, creative and technological aspects of sound design and management for the stage. Taught by experienced Guildhall staff, this course covers the purpose and timeline of theatre sound,

modern roles (Sound Designer, Principal Sound Engineer and Sound Operator) and includes an introduction to relevant software and equipment.

Prop Making Skills Ages 16+ Dates: Monday 23 – Friday 27 July Fee: £495 Residential option available

An introduction to a range of creative techniques for taking easily obtainable materials, tools, and objects and creating realistic and compelling props. You will learn exciting tricks, tips and cheats such as how to turn a brown paper bag into a roast chicken! The course is particularly suitable for keen amateurs, students considering Technical Theatre BA courses, school staff involved in theatre productions and theatre/film practitioners looking to expand their skills.

Scenic Arts Skills Ages 16+ Dates: Monday 23 – Friday 27 July Fee: £495 Residential option available

This course introduces a variety of skills needed to realise set design for the theatre, including how to scale up from a designer’s model, ways of transferring an image, how to prepare a surface for painting and many more. It is particularly suitable for keen amateurs, students considering Technical Theatre BA courses, school staff involved in theatre productions and theatre/film practitioners looking to expand their skills.

This course introduces you to the work of an electrics department and its accessories, lamps, lenses, lanterns and luminaires. It is particularly suitable for keen amateurs, those considering Technical Theatre BA courses, school staff involved in theatre productions and theatre/film practitioners looking to expand their skills.

Stage Management Skills Ages 16+ Dates: Monday 16 – Friday 20 July Fee: £495 Residential option available

Taught by Guildhall’s experienced staff, this course offers an introduction to the world of Stage Management and the skills required to work with a creative team. You will learn the art of blocking, cueing to music, prop sourcing and more. It is suitable for those considering applying for Technical Theatre BA courses, keen amateurs, school staff involved in theatre productions and theatre/film practitioners looking to expand their skills.

Taught by Guildhall’s experienced staff, this course offers an introduction to the world of opera from a stage management point of view, the logistics of working with opera singers, and how an opera production is scheduled. The course also introduces participants to the basics of how to cue music, progressing on to following opera scores.

Video Projection Mapping Ages 16+ Dates: Monday 13 – Friday 17 August Fee: £495

This course will introduce you to the basic principles and techniques of digital video mapping. It offers a unique opportunity for artists, designers, photographers, primary and secondary school teachers, amateurs and school leavers to learn and develop the necessary skills to prepare content and project video onto a 3D structure.

Creative Entrepreneurs: From Idea to Business Proposition Ages 18+

This intensive 3-day course will help you turn an early-stage idea into a creative business proposition. Taught by creative entrepreneurs who have already mastered this journey, this course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to pursue your very own creative venture. No prior business or entrepreneurship experience is required, only determination, an open mind and a can-do attitude.

Entrepreneurship Skills for Performing Artists: Helping you Thrive in Today’s Industry Ages 18+ Dates: Spring 2018 Fee: £215, concessions available

This intensive 2-day course will complement your existing expertise with entrepreneurship skills and business knowledge that can help you thrive in today’s competitive industry. Specifically developed and taught by established performing arts professionals, it covers subjects that are relevant to artists across the sector, from running your own ensemble to developing your profile as a teacher, and building your brand as an artist.

Mindfulness for Performers Ages 18+ Dates: To be announced Fee: £290

This practical evening course has been specifically developed at the Guildhall School to support musicians and actors in their lives and creative work. Skills for practice, performance and general good mental health will be taught in eight weekly classes.

Coaching is a powerful agent of change which can build engagement in teams and individuals, and is a link to successful organisation performance. Our approach aims to support, challenge and inspire you, while our training provides a rigorous blend of theory and practice, and is highly interactive. Whether you want to develop your coaching skills within an organisation or as an independent coach working with a range of clients, our courses will equip you with state-of-theart skills and knowledge.

A thorough introduction to automation and eChameleon software: from basic motion control theory, eChameleon functionality and complex moves to two and three-dimensional flying, including grid work and rigging. Courses are suitable for those pursuing a career in automation as well as technical theatre graduates and professionals in other backstage industries such as lighting and sound who are looking to increase their skills and knowledge.

Accommodation and Facilities

Assisted Places

Sundial Court, Guildhall School's hall of residence, is located in Chiswell Street, just around the corner from the School’s campus. Sundial Court has 176 bedrooms in 39 flats, each with either three, four, five or six bedrooms.

A number of fully funded and half funded assisted places are available for some of our Summer School courses.

Each flat has a communal kitchen with dining area, shower room and separate toilet. All rooms are equipped with internet access and are furnished to a high standard. There is a wheelchair accessible flat with a specially adapted kitchen and bathroom. There is also a Deaf Alerter system for the hard of hearing. Spaces for short courses participants are strictly limited and allocated on a first come first served basis.
