Do you want to create and showcase your own work? This four-day summer course is aimed at young artists from a range of music and theatre backgrounds. Participants will learn how to become a successful creative practitioner today, by working across art forms on a live, creative project: looking at project design, from development to final performance. Within the four days, participants will have the opportunity to meet entrepreneurs who will show them how to attract funding and how to find and develop their audiences. It also offers an exciting taste of the Performance and Creative Enterprise BA Hons programme. In association with

Ages 11–14

Guildhall School and Barbican come together to offer an inspirational week of creative activities for aspiring young artists. Participants will gain hands-on experience of music, film, performance and digital, with expert guidance from practising artists and creative leaders. The course offers flexible pick-up and drop-off times and lunch is included. No experience is necessary, but if you’ve got specific skills, talents or interests, make sure to let us know. Summer School for Young People Ages 12–15 Dates: Monday 29 July – Friday 9 August Fee: £1,250

Many children have a passion for acting. This exciting new course offers young people the opportunity to learn and explore acting in a supportive environment, while making sure they are having a lot of fun and making new friends. Through theatre games and acting exercises, led by Guildhall tutors and experienced acting graduates, participants will develop their acting skills alongside their peers, building confidence and self-esteem as they progress. The two-week course is designed for all levels of experience, including beginners and those who might eventually wish to attend a full-time drama school, and is ideal for children looking for an opportunity to do the very thing they love and learn new skills as part of a stimulating and creative group. An inspirational and intensive introduction to actor training, including group activity with renowned Guildhall tutors and experienced graduates. This course is designed for various levels of experience, including beginners and those who wish to pursue full-time drama training. You will gain fundamental insights into acting in Shakespeare and modern drama through group classes and working on scenes together.

Summer School for Adults Three weeks of stimulating training in acting, including intensive tuition, workshops and rehearsals with Guildhall’s renowned tutors. These courses are ideal for non-professional actors, regardless of experience, who want to explore acting in a fun and supportive environment.

Acting in Shakespeare & Contemporary Theatre Minimum age: 18 Dates: Monday 15 July – Friday 2 August Fee: £1,950 (payable in instalments) Residential option available

Explore short scenes from Shakespeare and a contemporary play, and investigate the texts through group exercises and improvisation. The aim is to demystify Shakespeare and commit to truthful acting in modern drama.

Acting in Musical Theatre Minimum age: 18 Dates: Monday 15 July – Friday 2 August Fee: £1,950 (payable in instalments) Residential option available

Participants will work with a director and a musical director on a project exploring a selection of scenes and songs. This involves some musical staging, but the focus of the course is on the craft of acting within the context of song.

Guildhall School’s Preliminary Acting Course aims to offer a broad basis upon which to begin further actor training. The course provides grounding in essential skills, including how to read a play and how to apply background research to the acting process. As an extension of this, the group works intensively with a director to explore the material. Participants also undertake rehearsal projects on Shakespeare and a contemporary play.

Join us for this unique course about body mapping, the conscious correcting of one’s own personal body map to produce efficient and effective movement. Participants will learn how to experience and understand the sensations of movement in playing an instrument. This course is aimed at teachers and performers of any instrument or voice who would like to develop their own technique and practice.

Based on our celebrated Junior Guildhall Kindergarten music training programme, this half-term workshop provides the ideal introduction to musicianship through games and activities based on the principles of Kodály and Eurythmics. Musical education has been linked to an array of neurological development benefits for children, from confidence to language skills. Delivered by Guildhall early years specialists, this course masterfully combines learning and fun for little ones and parents alike.

A fantastic opportunity for young composers to develop their skills and write a piece for a small instrumental ensemble. Learn about writing for instruments and develop your ideas with guidance from a Guildhall composition tutor and input from performers. Hear your piece performed in a concert at the end.

Essential Aural Skills Minimum age: 11 Dates: Monday 15 – Saturday 20 July Fee: £380 Residential option available

This intensive training course will help you practise your aural skills, speed up the learning process and make your playing more expressive, while working on your listening and memorising skills. It is valuable to anyone who sings, plays or composes and wants to refine their aural skills, whether for exam preparation or personal development.

Building on the lessons in Essential Aural Skills, this course is designed for experienced musicians who want to further advance their aural skills. You will develop your listening and memorising skills up to and above the level required for Grade 8 ABRSM exams or equivalent.

Taught by Guildhall’s expert tutors, this popular course is driven by the ABRSM theory syllabus. It is aimed at participants of any age who wish to improve their theory knowledge, whether preparing for the ABRSM Grade 5 theory exam, or to enhance their appreciation and understanding of music. Our Refresher Days allow participants to revise the course curriculum, particularly helpful ahead of a Grade 5 theory exam.

Taught by Guildhall’s expert tutors, this course is designed for participants who wish to develop a more advanced understanding of music theory. It is ideal particularly for participants working towards Music Theory examinations upwards of ABRSM Grade 5 or equivalent, and those who wish to build on what they have learnt in Essential Music Theory.

This course offers an exciting opportunity for girls aged 14–18 to develop their skills in composition and music technology. Participants will learn the most important elements of music production including recording, use of MIDI, and sound design. Each participant will produce a CD recording that they can take home at the end of the course.

This course is designed for people considering a career as a music therapist. It is delivered by tutors with wideranging experience in clinical and professional settings, via a combination of theoretical and practical sessions, case presentations and experiential learning. Participants can expect to learn more about the psychodynamically-informed approach to music therapy taught at Guildhall School, and what a music therapist’s career might look like.

This unique and exciting course is for young instrumentalists playing any bowed string, wind, brass or percussion instrument. It is led by our lively team of expert Guildhall tutors, and aims to support young musicians to nurture their creativity and develop their skills in a friendly environment. With an emphasis on fun, participants will experience a wide range of music in different performance settings including orchestra, small ensembles, and choir. We will even create our own piece of original music, so a world premiere is guaranteed at our informal end of course concert.

Vocal Summer School for Classical Singers Ages 16–21 Recommended level: Grade 6+ Dates: Monday 15 – Friday 19 July Fee: £550 Residential option available

Led by senior staff from the Vocal Studies department this course will give you a chance to experience Guildhall School’s world-leading vocal training. With a joint focus on class teaching and extensive one to one coaching, participants will work towards an informal concert at the end of the course. In addition to an introduction to singing in Italian and communicating text into song, the course covers body awareness and performance skills.

Contemporary A Cappella with Accent Minimum age: 16 Dates: Wednesday 17 – Saturday 20 July Fee: £380 Residential option available

Join internet sensation group Accent in this progressive four-day a cappella course, to develop vocal skills for ensembles in an energetic, fun and creative environment. Participants will sing in small closeharmony groups and work on a cappella ensemble skills, while masterclasses will also be given on arranging, vocal percussion, vocal history and more. The course culminates in a recording session in our world class studio.

Chamber Music Weekend for Flute, Cello & Piano Minimum age: 16 Recommended level: Grade 6+ Dates: Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 July Fee: £250

Join us for an inspiring and challenging weekend led by renowned flute, cello and piano trio Enigma 14. Participants will form trios with likeminded musicians to explore works by composers including Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, guided by the expert coaching of Enigma 14’s members. A supportive approach will allow you to grow your skills both as an individual and as part of a chamber group, with the course concluding with an informal concert for family and friends.

This course offers participants the opportunity to learn from Junior Guildhall’s experienced tutors in a friendly and supportive environment. You will explore a varied and exciting repertoire culminating in an end of course concert for family and friends. Plus, participants will receive an exclusive masterclass from a leading guest musician. This short course is ideal for young musicians to have fun while improving their skills, and also provides valuable preparation for those looking to audition for music college.

Singers’ Weekend: Jazz, Gospel & World Music

This long-running course is ideal for instrumentalists and singers looking to gain inspiration, and meet and perform with like-minded musicians. Activities include instrumental/vocal classes, jazz and rock groups, big bands, harmony and improvisation classes, and recording experience. All levels from beginners to aspiring professionals are catered for, as participants are grouped by ability and experience. After hours, exciting concerts by the tutors are presented each evening, followed by The Club, where everyone can perform and jam. It’s a busy and vibrant week, culminating in an epic Friday evening concert for family and friends.

Rock Week or Junior Jazz & Rock Week This engaging two-day choral workshop, led by Guildhall jazz vocal tutors and guests, is open to singers from all backgrounds who want to work together on jazz, gospel and world music. It focuses on learning vocal ensemble pieces while developing aural and rhythmic awareness and skills in group harmonising and improvising – there is also an optional session on solo improvising. No music reading is necessary as everything is learned by ear and performed in a concert with an accompanying band on Sunday night.

This specially tailored course will share in many of the activities of the Jazz & Rock Week while providing a designated stream of activity for younger musicians. Our fun and supportive approach provides an ideal environment to learn and grow with like-minded young musicians.

This course will introduce participants to the basic principles and techniques of the exciting world of digital video mapping. Taught by expert tutors from Guildhall’s ground-breaking BA in Video Design for Live Performance, it offers a fantastic opportunity to learn and develop the necessary skills to create and project video content onto a 3D structure.

Sound Design for Theatre Minimum age: 16 Dates: Monday 15 – Friday 19 July Fee: £525 Residential option available

This hands-on course introduces participants to the practical and creative aspects of sound design and management for the dramatic stage. Taught by Guildhall’s experienced staff, the course covers the purpose and timeline of theatre sound, explores modern roles such as Sound Designer and Sound Operator and introduces relevant software and equipment. You will come together with participants from other Production Arts courses for a joint endof-course project.

This course introduces participants to the work of a theatre electrics department and its accessories, lamps, lenses, lanterns and luminaires. Participants will get hands-on experience rigging and focusing lanterns and guidance from Guildhall staff on how to draw a lighting plan. You will come together with participants from other Production Arts courses for a joint end-of-course project.

Taught by Guildhall’s experienced staff, this course offers an introduction to the world of Theatre Stage Management and the skills required to work with a creative team. You will develop varied skills including the art of blocking, cueing to music, prop sourcing and much more! You will come together with participants from other Production Arts courses for a joint end-of-course project.

Taught by Guildhall’s experienced staff, this course offers an introduction to the world of stage managing opera. It covers the logistics of working with opera singers, how an opera production is scheduled, and the history of opera. Participants will also be introduced to the basics of how to cue music and follow opera scores.

The Forgotten Wardrobe: Costume Upcycling Minimum age: 16 Dates: Monday 22 – Friday 26 July Fee: £525 Residential option available

Taught by Guildhall staff, this fun and exciting course allows you to apply the practical skills of costume management for the theatre to your very own upcycling project. The aim of the course is to give ideas and inspiration as to how you can alter, adapt and customise costumes or fashion garments and bring them back to life. You will learn how to create embellishment, and receive top tips on how to handle specialist fabrics.

This course introduces a variety of skills needed to realise set design for the theatre, including how to scale up from a designer’s model, ways of transferring an image, how to prepare a surface for painting and many more. The course takes place in our state-of-the-art design workshop and is taught by Guildhall’s experienced staff.

This course offers an introduction to a range of creative techniques for transforming easily obtainable materials, tools and objects, and creating realistic and compelling props. This evening course is intended for more experienced composers, producers and sound designers. It will cover a wide range of subjects designed to expand the participants’ knowledge and understanding of music technology, while improving the quality of their productions. This course will cover techniques and aesthetics of sound synthesis, as well as how to produce custom sound design and presets using advanced audio processing techniques. This course is suitable as a follow-on to Music Production in Logic Pro X: Beginner Course, or for individuals with prior experience of digital music production.

Take improvisation to another level in this six-week evening course. Participants will think on their feet and work on more sophisticated scenes and exercises. Whether you aspire to be on a comedy panel show or simply enjoy a pressure-free creative outlet, this course will help you realise even more of your potential. This intermediate course is designed for people who have already completed the Improvise with Guildhall: Beginner Course, and may also suit those who already have experience with improvisation.

This new evening course will introduce participants to contemporary theatre and new writing through an exploration of a modern work. Participants will engage with some of the themes that span the genre, examine the use of language and physicality and develop performance skills through devised work. This course is ideal for newcomers to theatre and young non-actors who wish to expand their knowledge of contemporary theatre and bring their understanding and skills to the next level.

Creative Music Training: Working within Healthcare This weekend training course will explore the wide range of skills and approaches needed to lead creative musical activities with children and young people, within or outside of mainstream education. The course will cover various topics including processes for composition, how to cater for different ability levels, improvisation and more. Taught by expert Guildhall tutors, Creative Music Training is particularly suitable for musicians, music leaders and students in higher education.

This practical evening course has been specifically developed at Guildhall School to support musicians and actors in their lives and creative work. Through meditation and re-connecting with the body, participants can learn how to bring awareness to the present moment and relate differently with stress, anxiety and depression. This 8-week evening course will explore themes such as stepping out of automatic pilot, working with obstacles including self-criticism and performance anxiety and learn how to cultivate stage presence.

This course offers a thorough introduction to automation and eChameleon software: from basic motion control theory, eChameleon functionality and complex moves to two and three-dimensional flying, including grid work and rigging. Courses are suitable for those pursuing a career in automation as well as technical theatre graduates and professionals in other backstage industries such as lighting and sound who are looking to increase their skills and knowledge.

Our approach aims to support, challenge and inspire you, while our training provides a rigorous blend of theory and practice, and is highly interactive. Whether you want to develop your coaching skills within an organisation or as an independent coach working with a range of clients, our courses will equip you with state-of-the art skills and knowledge. Our training is ideal for people who use mentoring or coaching as part of their daily work.

A number of fully funded and half funded assisted places are available for some of our short courses. To be eligible for an assisted place, applicants will need to satisfy a means test and currently live or attend school or college in one of the following boroughs or areas: Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Camden, City of London, Essex (borders with London), Greenwich, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Redbridge, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Westminster.

Accommodation and Facilities

Sundial Court, Guildhall School’s hall of residence, is located in Chiswell Street, just around the corner from the School’s campus. Accommodation is available to book only for certain summer courses and spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Under 18s and Chaperoning

Participants under the age of 18 who are resident in our on-site accommodation will be allocated rooms in single sex, under-18 only flats. Pastoral care for under-18 participants is managed by our Lead Chaperone and supported by our team of first aid trained and DBS checked Guildhall chaperones, many of whom are students and graduates of Guildhall School.

Assisted Places

Assisted places are also available to participants at Junior Guildhall and the School’s CYM centres who are in receipt of a means tested bursary. An assisted places form can be downloaded from the Guildhall School’s website: gsmd.ac.uk/assistedplaces Applications open in January 2019. The deadlines for applications are:
