A Note from the Principal

A

s supporters of the Guildhall School, you will have known for a long time that the training that our students receive is among the best in the world. It is nevertheless deeply gratifying to have been officially designated as ‘world-leading’ and to have had this fact publicly recognised repeatedly over the course of the last year in objective, sector-wide reviews and rankings. As you might expect therefore, we have continued to engage with students, alumni, artists and audiences on an international scale. In December, we announced a ground-breaking new joint degree with Beijing’s Central Academy of Drama to start in September 2016. In the spring, actors and theatre technicians from the Drama division gained first-hand experience of international touring when they took Patsy Rodenburg’s new devised piece Go, make you ready to Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing, where they performed to sell-out crowds. Meanwhile back at home, student callers taking part in our telephone campaign spoke to alumni around the globe, receiving valuable careers advice and travel tips along the way.

The more eagle-eyed among you may notice that our supporter list is different this year. Recent changes to Gift Aid legislation mean that we are no longer able to treat membership fees as donations, so the Guildhall Circle membership list does not appear. We are delighted, however, that many members have chosen to make a donation on top of their membership fee and are therefore listed herein. We also take great pleasure in being able to thank for the first time those individuals who have chosen to leave a gift to the School in their wills, thereby providing a bedrock for Guildhall’s support of future generations of musicians, actors and theatre technicians. With thanks to you all for your continuing support.

Professor Barry Ife cbe Principal

Over the course of 2015/16 our fundraising has largely focused on student support, reflecting the increasing demand on our scholarships and hardship funds each year. We are currently able to offer financial support to almost half of enrolled students, but as tuition fees increase and the range of courses the School offers grows, the number of students in need of support is growing too. I would personally like to thank the 179 alumni who made donations during our telephone campaign and the many people, largely audience members, who gave to our Playing Your Part appeal. Collectively you have pledged an astonishing £75,000 in student support over the next five years. As you will read in our scholar profiles, this money will make a real difference to students who need it. 3

NEWS

Guildhall recognised as “world-leading” It has been an extremely exciting and busy year for Guildhall. Our teaching was judged worldleading as a result of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) institutionspecific review in May. This significant news means that Guildhall will be one of 16 specialist higher education institutions to receive additional funding from HEFCE. The review panel commented: “World-leading pedagogic research originating from the institution was seen as indicative of an institution producing teaching outputs that have had a positive and significant impact on the way people look at teaching and learning music. Indeed, the practice of performing arts in general was seen as being influenced by Guildhall’s teaching outputs. The institution’s advocacy of studentcentred artistic education and socially-engaged practice were seen as distinguishing features. Also, the formidable impact of recent

6

graduates was a compelling factor in support of the case.” We were ranked as the topplaced conservatoire in the renowned Guardian University Guide tables for Music for 2017, with an outstanding score of 96.8/100, jumping up from last year’s 6th place. We were also named in the top 10 performing arts institutions worldwide by QS World University Rankings for 2016.

New joint degree with Beijing’s Central Academy of Drama We announced a major new partnership with the Central Academy of Drama, Beijing to deliver a joint Bachelor’s Degree in Acting Studies for Chinese students. The course will offer 25 students, nominated by CAD, the opportunity to train for two years at each institution, with those eligible receiving a joint BA in Acting Studies from the Guildhall School and the Central Academy of Drama.

Thank You Day 2016 In February we held our second Thank You Day to give students and staff the opportunity to show their gratitude for our generous supporters. We had an impressive turn out, with 100 students and staff flocking to the Silk Street foyer to take part in activities. There was a big donor thank you card to sign, the opportunity to pose for a photo and lots of discussions about what philanthropic support means for students studying at Guildhall. Many of the messages displayed the passion students feel about their courses, with phrases like ‘thank you for allowing me to follow my dream’ coming up time and again. Students and staff at Guildhall are aware that funding for the arts is often hard to come by and their gratitude for support was clear. As one student put it, ‘Your support makes the world of difference to keeping the arts alive! Thank you!’ Read more in our scholar profiles from page 14.

Performance Highlights Autumn The 2015/16 season started with one of the great choral works of the 20th century, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, performed by the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra & Chorus under the baton of James Blair.

Our talented opera students worked with director Stephen Barlow and designer Yannis Thavoris to produce WolfFerrari’s intricate and witty ensemble piece Le donne curiose. And it wasn’t just a busy start for the musicians! The Drama department mounted three major productions in the autumn term: The Secret Rapture by David Hare, Mephisto directed by Wyn Jones; and Lulu by Frank Wedekind, directed by Director of Drama Christian Burgess.

Spring Alumna Debbie Wiseman conducted the Guildhall Chamber Orchestra in a programme of her

compositions for film and TV, which included Wilde, Tom’s Midnight Garden and Wolf Hall. Three more drama productions also kick-started the year with performances of Dealer’s Choice, Top Girls and a Pinter Triple Bill.

Over in the Silk Street Theatre, Martin Lloyd-Evans directed Britten’s chamber opera The Rape of Lucretia, a technically and emotionally exacting piece. To finish off the term, actors and technical theatre students celebrated four hundred years of Shakespeare with Go, make you ready, a play devised and directed by Patsy Rodenburg. After a week in Guildhall’s own Silk Street Theatre the students then went on to tour Go, make you ready in Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing.

Summer Milton Court Studio

Theatre was transformed into a jazz club for a two-day showcase, with a varied programme of jazz events from both students and celebrated artists such as Bobo Stenson and Martin Speake.

Doctoral Composer-in-Residence Philip Venables’ new opera, 4.48 Psychosis, was a resounding success when it was premiered in May at the Lyric Theatre, and opera fans were similarly delighted with the Martinu˚ double bill Ariane and Alexandre bis. The final term’s Opera Makers also featured three exciting new works written by composers and librettists on the School’s MA in Opera Making & Writing programme.

The actors, musicians and theatre technicians came together in a spectacular end-of-year finale with the musical On the Twentieth Century, a great end to a great year.

Guildhall Calling! In April of this year, 17 students studying a variety of disciplines called alumni across the globe to share Guildhall experiences and to raise funds for the School. Our team of student callers spoke to more than 600 alumni over the two weeks. They had some incredible conversations, learning all about what our alumni have been up to since graduating and gaining some valuable careers advice in the process. Our student callers were also raising awareness for the Guildhall Fund, which supports scholarships and artistic opportunities for current and future students. We are delighted that our generous alumni pledged a magnificent £62,000 over the next five years, enabling more musicians, actors and theatre technicians to study at Guildhall without financial burden. We spoke with one of our student callers, Jazz saxophonist Sam Pembery, about the experience. Why did you want to become a student caller?

I felt like after receiving so many incredible opportunities from Guildhall, it was time to give something back. But not only back to the School, but to the students who make the School. It’s important that all students, from any financial background, get as many opportunities as the rest. That’s why I wanted to help. What did you most enjoy about being a student caller?

The atmosphere was comfortable and friendly, and the other callers were great company. But the most enjoyable part was learning 12

invaluable information from Guildhall graduates. Everyone had something to say about all the three industries that are taught at Guildhall. Finding out about Acting and Technical Theatre (myself being a jazz student) was particularly interesting as before the calling sessions, I knew absolutely nothing about them. Did you have any memorable conversations with alumni?

There was one particular conversation where we started talking about music, and then it gradually morphed into a 45-minute conversation about religion. Absolutely fascinating! What is the best thing about studying at Guildhall?

It’s in the centre of London, which means I can get to the jazz clubs after a late finish at college! But the best thing is how intimate it feels. It feels like its own campus, which creates a really nice vibe for students and staff! What do you hope to go on to do after Guildhall?

I want to do as many things as possible. I’m motivated to work hard to make a living, to travel

and to one day have a mortgage! I’m interested in session, Jazz and Pop music as well as writing. I want to move to New York,

“I felt like after receiving so many incredible opportunities from the Guildhall, it was time to give something back.” L.A., and Cuba, and experience music from all of these places and maybe more. I want to start a craft beer brewery and make money, giving myself a safety net for my musical career. If it means sleeping 5 hours a day, so be it. I don’t want to get to the end of my life, and realise that I had slacked at some point. Life isn’t for slacking. Guildhall gave me this view, as well as a lot of friends and family. So I thank Guildhall for that, and I hope others will leave feeling the same.

NEWS

Playing Your Part This year our summer appeal, Playing Your Part, set out to demonstrate to supporters how contributing to the Scholarships Fund has a dramatic impact on a Guildhall student’s experience. We followed the stories of three current scholars: Oliver Wass studying for an MPerf in Harp, Rozzi Nicholson-Laily on the MA Acting programme and Erin Witton studying for her BA in Technical Theatre Arts. All three have had incredibly different experiences at Guildhall, learning the specialist skills they need to help them succeed in their respective fields. We were delighted that 75 people donated to Playing Your Part, raising over £13,000 for the Scholarships Fund. Thank you for playing your part and helping to change the lives of the next generation of musicians, actors and theatre technicians.

Oliver Wass (MPerf Harp)

Rozzi Nicholson-Lailey (MA Acting)

Erin Witton (BA Technical Theatre)

“Guildhall has been a part of my life since I was 12 years old, but I would not be up on this stage today without the support of the Scholarships Fund. It has given me the most incredible opportunity, for which I am deeply thankful.”

“Guildhall has empowered me to throw open new ideas, and given me three years of freedom to experiment. Thanks to the Scholarships support I received, I can now grab that opportunity with both hands. It lifted a massive weight from my shoulders.”

“I cannot think of a better platform for my future than training at Guildhall. I have benefited from the highest standards of teaching and incredible opportunities for learning on the job. None of this would have been possible without scholarship support.”

SCHOLAR PROFILES

At a time when most tuition fees for undergraduate and postgraduate courses are £9,000 and above, there is ever-increasing need for scholarship support. The Scholarships Fund provides financial assistance to almost half of Guildhall students, many of whom would not be here without it. We spoke to two scholars to find out how much your support means to them.

Jacob Coleman BA Acting

Supported by the Guildhall School Trust Tell us about how you came to be at Guildhall

I auditioned for the acting course in March 2014, after my drama teacher told me about it. I was undecided about going to a drama college, but after getting to the final round for Guildhall, and meeting the students there, my mind was made up. This was the place I wanted to be. What’s the best thing about studying here?

The spirit that each teacher and each individual of the year group brings. It’s such a privilege to work with people who care so much about acting and the arts and who are there for each other every step of the way. What opportunities have you had so far as a Guildhall School student that have particularly stood out for you?

One of the greatest opportunities I’ve had so far was going to Brazil to perform children’s theatre in the favelas with other Guildhall students, actors and musicians. If it weren’t for Guildhall, not only

as an establishment but as a group of creative minds, I don’t think I would have had this kind of opportunity to explore a completely different cultural society and to share our passions with each other. What do you plan to go on to do? And how will your time at the Guildhall School prepare you for that?

My plan is to go into theatre, to continue to improve my craft and gain more professional experience as an actor. That’s my first step. Although this profession can be so unpredictable - the future might hold something totally different! How has being awarded a scholarship helped you during your time at the Guildhall School?

The scholarship has been a critical help, from being able to see astounding productions with world-class actors in some of the best venues on the planet, the experience of which is invaluable to an actor breaking into the business, to helping to pay the rent and to buy food, which is arguably more valuable!

“It’s such a privilege to work with people who care so much about acting and the arts and who are there for each other every step of the way.”

Saatvika Kantamneni MA Collaborative Theatre Production and Design

Supported by the Guildhall School Trust Why did you choose to come to the Guildhall School?

This is the only programme of its kind in the world that gives young people like me the opportunity to collaborate with peers and create new work. Coming from India, where I worked as a stage manager with a theatre and live events company, this programme was the perfect fit for me to learn through the work whilst also being part of the best technical theatre school. What’s the best thing about studying at Guildhall?

I think that there isn’t one best thing; Guildhall is the best because of the right mix of everything – supportive staff, positive work environment, world-class facilities and bespoke opportunities. It is an ideal playground for a young theatre maker!

What do you plan to go on to do? And how will your time at the Guildhall School prepare you for that?

I am working towards becoming a freelance stage and production manager, and the experience of working on different kinds of projects and choosing my roles on them, has truly given me the opportunity to learn more about myself and my craft. How has being awarded a scholarship helped you during your time at the Guildhall School?

The scholarship has helped me to realise my dream. The opportunity it gave me to train at one of the best technical theatre schools in the world is excellent, especially when we don’t have any in my home country of India. This bespoke Masters programme is not available anywhere else, and the state-of-the-art education and facilities makes the experience a turning point in my life. With the prohibitive exchange rates and my father’s government wages, none of this would have been possible without scholarship support.

“The opportunity it gave me to train at one of the best technical theatre schools in the world is excellent, especially when we don’t have any in my home country of India.”

DONOR PROFILE

In 2015/16 we were grateful to receive donations from hundreds of different people, from Guildhall alumni to local residents. We spoke with former Junior Guildhall student Kevin Webb who has pledged to leave a legacy to Guildhall in his will about why he has decided to support the School.

Kevin Webb Where did your interest in music come from?

My Dad taught me. He had no professional training himself, but he had played in his local St John’s Ambulance Band as a child, then joined the Regimental Band of the 10th Royal Hussars during his National Service. He taught me up to Grade 6. I specifically remember that, because to get into Guildhall I needed a Distinction at Grade 5, and I only had a pass. So, I took Grade 6 and then anxiously awaited the result. On Christmas Day he presented me with a certificate of Distinction for Grade 6. I remember being a bit annoyed that he kept it from me until Christmas Day – he couldn’t resist a bit of drama! I was very lucky to grow up in the days when local authorities still funded 100% bursaries at the junior departments of the London conservatoires and for the next six years I had a fullyfunded place at Junior Guildhall to learn the trombone.

“Junior Guildhall made all the difference for me. It shaped me as a person” Would you have had the opportunity to study at Junior Guildhall without this funding?

No, absolutely not. I’m sure my parents would have done their best to find me a decent local private instrumental teacher, but there was no way they could have afforded the fees. Junior Guildhall made all the

difference for me. It shaped me as a person because of all the skills I learned, which I still use to this day, playing in amateur orchestras and brass bands. Supporting Guildhall is my way of helping children who will face the same financial challenges I had back in the 80s, and giving them the same opportunities I had. Why did you decide to help out by leaving Guildhall a legacy in your will?

I have a tremendous affinity for Guildhall because of the impression it made on me at a young age. I do feel very strongly that those of us who benefited from a free music education have an obligation to help the next generation obtain the same benefit we enjoyed. I don’t regard myself as wealthy and other Guildhall alumni may also say that they don’t have lots of money and small gifts won’t make a difference. However, if enough of us were to donate within our means that would add up to a huge amount. I think we all have a duty to give something back and we can give what we can whilst still providing for our families when we’ve gone.

Guildhall School Supporters 2015/16

We are grateful to everyone who has made a financial contribution to the Guildhall School of Music & Drama during the past year. This vital support means that we are able to provide scholarships to musicians, actors and theatre technicians, to undertake significant capital projects – such as the new facilities at Milton Court – and to take music and theatre to local, national and international communities. *Due to changes in Gift Aid legislation, we are no longer able to treat annual Circle memberships as philanthropic donations. This means Circle members will only be listed below if they have given an additional donation on top of their subscription. Please contact development@gsmd.ac.uk if you have any queries regarding this. We are very grateful to all our Circle members for their loyal support. Exceptional Giving (£100,000+)

How you can help

With the recent changes to higher education funding from the government and the increasing cost of study, there is a growing need to increase the money available to help our students. These are just a few ways in which you can make a difference:

Set up a regular monthly donation in support of the Guildhall School, to provide funds where the need is greatest Join us at one of our fundraising events such as the Guildhall School Summer Gala Evenings or Take to the Stage Provide a named scholarship and directly enable a young musician, actor or theatre technician to take their first steps towards their professional career Work with the School to provide transformative support for a specific area of our performance, teaching and other activities

26

Make provision for a legacy to the Guildhall School in your will and help us to provide support for future generations of talented young artists. For further information, please contact the Development Office on 020 7382 7179 or development@gsmd.ac.uk

RUNNING HEAD

The Guildhall School is provided by the City of London as part of its contribution to the cultural life of London and the nation.
