Take a stroll Farmers were the original Saturday market vendors on Salt Spring. But since the 1970s the edge of Centennial Park has been used as a spot to sell various wares. Then in the 1990s a “Make it, Bake it or Grow it” stipulation was applied to market goods by the Capital Regional District, which owns the park, transforming it from a free-for-all vending area to a more regulated venture. Regulation has not resulted in a lack of authenticity and charm, though, as you will find if you take a stroll through Salt Spring’s famous market on any Saturday from April through October.

Honey, odds and ends and surplus kittens at ‘buyer’s market’ The following excerpt from the July 14, 1976 edition of the Gulf Islands Driftwood newspaper describes the scene more than 40 years ago.
❝
It started as a means of disposing of surplus garden produce, but the Farmer’s Market is a big factor in the summer activities of Salt Spring Island. The stalls in Centennial Park are mostly formed by the vehicles which bring vendors to the park. Some use display tables and others use the paved ground. It was originally a market place
Fr
for garden produce and little else. That’s all changed. You visit the market in the heart of Ganges against the fence of the Centennial Park. First stall against the fence is selling books and odds and ends. It stands as sentinel at one end of the line and at the other
end is a vendor of cedar blinds. In between are clothing displays, eggs, garden produce and many other commodities. Honey stands alongside the surplus from the vendor’s garden and two children are proudly selling surplus kittens. It was a buyer’s market.”

It’s apparent by stepping foot on Salt Spring Island that things are different here. The island attracts a wealth of artists and art appreciators from around the world and while artists come here to create, it’s also the island and its community that has influence over the creations. There is arguably no place better to view and purchase some of the amazing products of the island than the Saturday Market. The weekly event attracts local artists, food producers and farmers to show off the

products of their love and labour and to keep in touch with the community. In the early Saturday morning sun, a series of tents begins to bloom in Centennial Park. People are assigned their spots. Artists mainly set up closer to Fulford-Ganges Road, while the farmers portion stretches out toward the harbour. As things start to get moving, Rob Pingle, the market coordinator for the past eight years, can be seen holding a clipboard with a group of vendors who are waiting for that ideal place to sell their wares. Pingle says there are around 150 vendors who regularly participate and 100 more who would like to take part on a weekly basis. He enjoys the sense of community brought by vendors. “People come to markets to hear the stories of the product and so when they can connect with the person making the

product, that connection to the piece, to the place, I think is that much greater,” says Pingle. “It’s a great community and it’s always interesting,” Pingle adds. “When it comes down to it, everybody here believes in the community and wants to do their best in their own way to make Salt Spring a community.”

SPCA doggie daycare volunteers make sure dogs are safe and happy while their owners shop the Saturday Market.
Now in our sixth year, we have prevented over 1,800 dogs from being left in hot cars. Together, we have raised nearly $20,000 for our Salt Spring SPCA. Our doggie daycare is one-on-one, on-leash service. We aim to help visitors enjoy the market while providing a fun, safe, and low-stress experience for their pooch.
We always need more volunteers for a minimum two-hour shift on any Saturday. More volunteers mean more dogs are helped and that really makes a difference in our community!

You can actually create an intimacy by looking someone in the eye and exchanging something. You know where [the products come] from, you know the love and the heart that comes from it and you know that you can support somebody’s well being by just being a part of enjoying their art.
Why do you buy local? Andreas Zentler
For sustainability and being able to support people around you.

Because I think it’s higher quality than what you get in the grocery store and you can trust the ingredients more because you’re talking to the farmer and the cultivator right there.

Salt Spring’s Saturday Market in the Park has long been a place to buy crafts of all sorts — from pottery to jewellery to clothing and more — as well as delicious food products. But the market’s roots were as a place for farmers to sell their surplus produce each week. Several farm stalls set up each week from spring through fall in one section of the market.

Be Water Savvy Use Only What You Need
Water is one of Salt Spring Island’s most precious resources. Please join islanders as we work together to ensure that this summer, and every summer, we use this limited resource wisely, and that we respect and protect our island watersheds. Try these handy water saving tips: Keep showers short. Use low-flow shower heads. If bathing, try a 1/4 tub only. Run only full loads in dishwashers and washing machines. Shut off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing up hands or dishes. Use low-flush toilets. Flush less often. Use a bucket to capture and reuse shower, bath and dishwater in your garden. Inform guests about our islands’ limited water supply, and ask them to be please be aware of keeping consumption down.
Together EVERY water saver makes a difference.
