For people who love good food — whether fresh, preserved, baked or served in a restaurant or cafe — the Gulf Islands are the place to be. Island-made cheeses, chocolates, coffee, fish products, tofu, gelato, pasta, spices and seasonings, jams, gourmet condiments, teas, breads and acres of farm products can be enjoyed here. All of the islands’ farmers’ markets offer a chance to buy home-grown, home-baked or prepared-on-the-spot delicacies, and several Gulf Islands restaurants use locally grown foods whenever possible. Fish and other forms of seafood are also plentiful on the islands, naturally. Visitors can stroll down to the docks or into specialty shops to see if a daily catch is available. Local restaurants also serve excellently prepared seafood.

Snapshots of the Gulf Islands Galiano Island

When thinking Galiano, superlatives come to mind. It seems to have more of everything, except crowds. That’s surprising, really, given that it’s the first stop on the Tsawwassen-Gulf Islands ferry, a trip of under an hour. The lanky island seems to have more sunsets, more oceanfront, more spectacular hikes, more beautiful drives, more stunning views, more range of places to stay and eat, and more things to do.

Mayne Island

This is an island of surprises. Who would have thought that quiet little Mayne Island could ever have been labelled “Little Hell,” for example? Blame the gold rush for that 150-year old label. It was the miners who gave their name to Miners Bay, a jostling halfway stop between Vancouver Island and the Fraser River, en route to the Cariboo. Back then, Mayne was the commercial and social centre of the Gulf Islands.

Pender Island

Where can you get free killer whale shows with a sunset thrown in? Try Thieves Bay on North Pender. The orcas are a big island summer draw as they feed and frolic almost daily in the rich tidal waters here. These islands have the balance just right, just developed enough to have many amenities, and just natural enough to offer secluded beaches and lonely forest treks, especially on the more undeveloped South Pender.

Salt Spring Island

It’s Saturday afternoon on Salt Spring Island and it looks like there’s a party going on. At the island’s Centennial Park, fiddlers strike up a tune while shoppers browse the wares: everything from delicate silver jewellery and hand-painted ceramics to organic veggies and fresh-baked bread look tempting under multi-hued umbrellas.

Saturna Island

How can an island so close to the mainland be so quiet? The answer lies in the getting there. It’s only 14 nautical miles from the Tsawwassen terminal as the crow flies, but the trip involves two ferries, and can take over three hours. The journey is so scenic, however, that most visitors consider this a bonus — two ferries for the price of one.

Retreat Cove dock on Galiano Island.

Be inspired to explore Galiano is the easiest of the Gulf Islands to reach from the Lower Mainland, with a quick 50-minute ferry ride from Tsawwassen. The island is 27.5 km long and just 6 km across at its widest point. Not surprisingly, the main centre of activity is found closest to the Sturdies Bay ferry terminal in the south end. Any number of amenities within walking distance make it tempting to explore the Sturdies Bay area, with an excellent bookstore — celebrating 20 years of operation in 2017 — cafes, shops and galleries all nearby. Another popular spot is Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park. Visitors can make use of the private marina and ancillary services, or stay at the provincial marine park with vehicle and walk-in camping, interpretive programs, a floating marine nature house and special events. It's just one of the areas kayakers and other

paddlers can easily explore around the island. The less frequented parts of the island are also well worth a visit. Sizable parks can be found from Bluffs Park near the southeastern tip to Dionisio Park — a boataccess-only park — at the extreme northwest. Bodega Ridge, Mount Galiano and Pebble Beach will inspire exploration along the way, with trails through the rainforest and endangered Garry oak meadows leading to sweeping beaches or open vistas. Galiano Island also has cutting-edge environmental and food-systems programs. Check out the Galiano Food Program or the Galiano Conservancy Association for special activities and workshops. The island holds its annual Nettle Festival each April, and the Blackberry Festival in October. Other special events set for 2017 are the North Galiano Canada Day Jamboree, which will be

extra special for Canada's 150th anniversary, the Lions Fiesta on Aug. 5 and the Galiano Wine and Beer Tasting Festival on Aug. 12. The Galiano Literary Festival runs Feb. 23 to 25 in 2018. A farmers’ market runs Saturdays from the May long weekend through September, and artists’ studios and exhibitions welcome visitors throughout the year.

Sandstone at Georgina Point Heritage Park.

Farms, history and artisans Of all the Gulf Islands, Mayne Island could claim to have the most living ties to the past. The Helen Point Reserve, held by the Tsartlip First Nation of Saanich, contains archaeological evidence of the oldest recorded human settlement in the Southern Gulf Islands, dated 5,000 years old. The local museum was once a jail cell constructed to hold rowdy miners who got into trouble on their way to the Cariboo gold rush in the 19th century. And the graveyard at Mary Magdalene Church has been the final resting place for islanders since 1896, on land donated by Arctic explorer Warburton Pike. The island’s history of Japanese settlement is commemorated at a beautiful Japanese garden at Dinner Bay Park. Approximately 50 islanders of Japanese descent were deported and interned by the Canadian government in 1942. The garden helps make restitution for this sad period in 12

the nation’s history. With all its links to the past, Mayne Island can equally boast a vibrant present. Farmland and orchards continue to form an important part of the landscape, along with the island’s more rugged forested areas. Local farmstands and the Saturday Farmers Market at the historic agricultural hall are some places to find fresh produce. The Ag Hall is also the base for the Mayne Island Fall Fair, held every year on the third Saturday in August. Arts and culture can be enjoyed in several shops, studios and gallery spaces across the island. Recreational opportunities, both on land and sea, are also plentiful on Mayne. The island’s Parks and Recreation Commission has a hiking and walking trail map that details more than 25 parks, trails and beach access spots. About 1,000 people live on Mayne yearround.

Recreation heaven Two islands created from one when a shipping canal was dredged in 1903, the Penders today are united both by a onelane bridge and by ideal conditions for relaxation. The ferry terminal and most amenities can be found on North Pender, with the Driftwood Centre forming a virtual downtown, but the island still enjoys the atmosphere of a past when supplies were delivered by boat. Visits to Hope Bay, Port Browning and Medicine Beach areas will give visitors access to quaint cafes, pubs and shops, and diverse views of the nearby islands and waters. North Pender also affords plenty of opportunities for outdoor enjoyment. There is a nine-hole golf course, a long-established disc-golf course, a small public campground with trail access, several small lakes and popular beaches. Roesland, which is part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, is home to both a Parks Canada office and the Pender Island Museum Society (housed in a 1908 farmhouse), with adjacent trails. Beautiful Mortimer Spit is located just off the bridge connecting the two islands and near the entrance to Browning Harbour. 14

gulfislandstourism.com | 2017

South Pender is home to just 10 per cent of the local residents, and has rugged terrain to tempt hikers at 244-metre-high Mount Norman and nearby Greenburn Lake ridge. Beaumont Marine Park can be reached from a trail from Mount Norman in about 30 to 40 minutes, but is perhaps more commonly accessed as a marine park. There are 11 walk-in or boat-in campsites, a picnic area and a sandy beach. Both Beaumont Park and Mount Norman are part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, which covers 36 square kilometres of land and sea on 15 islands and several islets and reefs in the region. Brooks Point is also a gorgeous seaside spot where whales and other marine wildlife are often seen. Like all of the Gulf Islands, many artists, musicians and writers call the Penders home, which is apparent by the quality and quantity of work at local galleries and studios, and through special cultural events and community celebrations.

Almost half of Saturna Island is protected within the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, and outdoor activities are not surprisingly among the best ways for visitors to make use of their BREEZY BAY time. The hilly island of 350 full-time residents is great for hiking, with spectacular views to be had from Mount Warburton Pike in the south end. Kayaking, swimming and cycling opportunities will bring visitors to the island’s remote points, from Fiddler’s Cove in the northeast to Winter Cove in the northwest. Plu m East Point Park, located at the island’s most northeastern tip, is a fantastic place to spot pods of orcas cruising through the Strait of Georgia to feed from May through November. Also in the park is the Saturna Heritage Centre, located at the rehabilitated Fog Alarm Building. It’s a volunteer-run interpretation centre focused on local history and heritage. Displays and attendants can be found during the summer tourist season. The island’s famous Canada Day lamb barbecue has been going on since the 1950s. It's now held on the grounds of Hunter Field at Winter Cove, a favourite spot for boaters. It offers all-day live entertainment, local crafts, an adult beverage garden, local lamb roasted » ACCOMMODATIONS over an open fire pit, and more. Other activities are held in the spacious FOUR WINDS recreational and cultural activity centre and at the more intimate community hall. overcrowded. Even a trip to the famous Saturday Market in Centennial Park during high summer soon winds down into a lazy afternoon and evening by a lake or oceanside patio. Salt Spring has plenty of accommodations, restaurants and food trucks, galleries, shops and recreational TAXI, TOURS & DELIVERIES • TAXI, TOURS & DELIVERIES

Salt Spring is the largest of the Gulf Islands, in terms of geographical size, population and number of amenities. The island has been named among the best North American art towns, gay-friendly travel experiences and island get-aways. Despite the publicity and well-deserved popularity, however, the island seldom feels

opportunities provided by guiding and equipment rental services. Salt Spring’s larger population does not mean there’s less wilderness, with several provincial parks and protected reserves to explore. Hikers and walkers will find trail systems for everything from a simple stroll to a strenuous mountain climb. Mouat Park’s tall trees provide shelter from too much sun or rain right at the edge of Ganges. It’s also a dog-friendly park and has a disc golf course. A ninehole, par-36 golf course is just north of Ganges. Those with boats or kayaks can also check out smaller islands, such as Russell Island, which was settled by Hawaiian pioneers in the 19th century, or let some knowledgeable guides take you there. Some wonderful south-end spots are colourful Fulford village, Ruckle Park and Burgoyne Bay Park.

Agricultural activity is burgeoning on Salt Spring, as evidenced by the Tuesday Farmers’ Market running from June through October, the Saturday Market and numerous farmstands around the island. Salt Spring’s Fall Fair (Sept. 16-17 in 2017) and the Salt Spring Apple Festival (Oct. 1) showcase agriculture and rural life in all its glory. Island galleries, ArtCraft and the selfdirected studio tour come fully to life in the summer months, providing proof of what the art town designation is all about. But things don't really slow down much through the shoulder seasons and in winter. Live performances run yearround at ArtSpring and several other venues, and in 2017, the second biennial Salt Spring National Art Prize exhibition at Mahon Hall and associated events runs from Sept. 22 to Oct. 22. See www. saltspringartprize.ca for all the details.

Be Water Savvy Use Only What You Need

Water is one of Salt Spring Island’s most precious resources. Please join islanders as we work together to ensure that this summer, and every summer, we use this limited resource wisely, and that we respect and protect our island watersheds. Try these handy water saving tips: Keep showers short. Use low-flow shower heads. If bathing, try a 1/4 tub only. Run only full loads in dishwashers and washing machines. Shut off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing up hands or dishes. Use low-flush toilets. Flush less often. Use a bucket to capture and reuse shower, bath and dishwater in your garden. Inform guests about our islands’ limited water supply, and ask them to be please be aware of keeping consumption down.

Together EVERY water saver makes a difference.
