Goals of a Medical Education at Georgetown Georgetown seeks to graduate physicians with a generalist professional education. This process integrates the scientific, clinical, professional, and “high touch� competencies needed to deliver patientcentered care. Our education is guided by knowledge, skills, and values reflective of the Georgetown community.

Unique Expressions of Cura Personalis

Health Justice Scholar Track & Advocacy Training This elective track is designed to provide longitudinal experience for medical students who have an interest in social justice and health care advocacy. Theoretical and experiential learning will provide understanding and skills necessary for effective advocacy training during medical education, curricular experiences, and career choices. 04 |

Population Health Scholar Track The purpose of the Population Health Scholar Track is to provide interested students with additional knowledge, skills, and attitudes to apply population health principles to clinical practice to improve the health of individuals, communities, and the public overall. The track will entail a comprehensive, longitudinal curriculum in population health, which will complement the curriculum at the School of Medicine.


International Programs Approximately 40% of students choose to complete 4-8 weeks of elective time through Georgetown’s International Programs. These programs provide participants with an understanding of health care policies and experience in medical care-delivery in a developing-nation setting. Participants have visited approximately 25 countries in the past five years.

Volunteerism in Health Care Responding to the needs in our community, all students must complete a community service requirement during their time at Georgetown.

Research Initiatives

Independent Scholarly Project Every Georgetown student is required to complete a scholarly project that seeks to answer a research question. Using the scientific method, and under the supervision of a mentor, students identify a project based on their individual interests in a variety of areas such as clinical research, clinical quality improvement, biomedical bench research, medical education pedagogy, social justice, and population health.

Medical Education Research Scholar Track This elective track entails a comprehensive, longitudinal curriculum in medical education research that expands opportunities for students interested in medical education through a scholarly approach.


Learning Spaces W. Proctor Harvey Clinical Teaching Amphitheater This flexible clinical sciences teaching space - configured as either a medical amphitheater in the round or two auditoria - serves as the heart of the MedicalDental Building.

Integrated Learning Center The Integrated Learning Center uniquely supports the School of Medicine’s emphasis on a patient-centered, competence-based curriculum where students demonstrate the skills of a generalist physician prior to graduation. It is comprised of ten patient examination rooms, nine multidisciplinary laboratory/seminar rooms, and a multifunctional conference room.

Study, Group Teaching, and Consultation Spaces Located in the Dahlgren Memorial Library, these spaces are equipped with white board walls and flat-screen displays for study and small group teaching. Consultation spaces uniquely support student research initiatives such as the Independent Scholarly Project.

Clinical Gross Anatomy Laboratories While a traditional cadaveric dissection is performed by students, dissection instructions are provided via the Online Dissector. Students have full access to extensive resources, including web-based dissection movies, images, and anatomical descriptions.

Affiliated Hospitals

Hoya Clinic

Clinical facilities for student teaching include both hospitals and outpatient affiliated clinics. All network institutions are in the Washington metropolitan area and provide students with opportunities to experience a uniquely diverse patient population.

Created and staffed by Georgetown medical students, this free clinic caters to DC’s disenfranchised and vulnerable population.

Learning Societies Every student joins one of the five Learning Societies, which serve as a platform for the creation of mentor-rich environments for crowdsourced learning of mindfulness, resiliency, professional authenticity, and leadership.

Student Clubs & Organizations

Mind-Body Medicine Program

Nearly 50 student groups and organizations provide a range of civic, intellectual, social, and spiritual events on campus and throughout the community.

An elective course integrated into the medical school curriculum, Mind-Body Medicine takes students through a series of exercises used to promote overall well-being, stress management, empathy, selfawareness, and self-care.

The Admissions Process The Committee on Admissions selects students on the basis of academic achievements, character, maturity, and motivation. In rendering decisions, the Committee evaluates the applicant’s entire academic record, performance on the MCAT, college premedical advisory committee evaluations, letters of recommendation, and the personal interview. The Committee on Admissions reads the entire application prior to rendering a decision; there are no absolute numeric cutoffs. When evaluating a file for interview, the Committee on Admissions emphasizes five major areas without assigning weight to a particular section: essays, experiences, MCAT scores, science GPA, and letters of recommendation.
