GUNGAHLIN COMMUNITY COUNCIL INC. GDENOW Gungahlin residents would have heard with relief the news that the full bench of the court has found in favour of the National Capital Authority and the ACT Government, dismissing an appeal action by Save the Ridge group to stop the building of Gungahlin Drive Extension. We encourage the Government to commence work on the construction of the road without delay. Why not write a short note to your local member urging them to hurry up and register concern at the constant delay? We don’t want our pollies to think the delay is OK. Express dismay at the terrible cost of the delay IN YOUR LETTER. Remember the millions wasted are coming out of your pocket and mine. It is time to rise up in opposition to the self interested group trying to hold the general community to ransom, wasting money that would have been better spent on building the road in the first place. The money would have been better spent funding hospital and education services in addition to building a road that ought to have been nearing completion by now. PARKS AND PLACES Please take time to read the coloured centre pages and to attend the meeting on Wednesday 9th November at 7.30pm at the Gungahlin Lakes Golf and Community Club. One of the frustrations we have as an executive representing you is that the term of reference of a consultation is usually very narrow. In this case the management of parks and (recreational) places is being addressed (in theory) before discussion about adequate provision of same. When I have tried to address the inadequate provision of parks and sports grounds, especially tennis and basketball facilities, I am told this is outside the terms of reference of this committee. Surely this is putting the cart before the horse? The problem is basically one of not putting enough resource towards the allocation of parks and sports grounds early enough to keep pace with the development of the area. The politicians need to hear from you about this. The public servants can only do as they have been asked to do. However, they can advise but if they haven’t written down your views you have wasted your time. Roma Hosking - Editor

YOUTH DENTION CENTRE

The GCC does not support the proposal to construct the YDC on site identified (in community consultation workshops) on the northern side of the Horse Park Dr/ Federal Hwy intersection. The GCC considers that this site is unsuitable due to: 1) The site’s current and longer-term isolation in relation to community facilities and opportunities for interaction between community and persons being held at the YDC 2) The site’s current isolation from public transport 3) The location of the site does not meet the requirements of the site selection requirements, due to the fact that the site can be observed from an elevated position i.e. from the elevated sections of the Horse Park Dr and the hills adjacent to the site.

With the information currently available to the Gungahlin Community Council (GCC), Council members support, in principal, the proposal to construct the ACT Youth Detention Centre (YDC) on either of the two sites identified (in community consultation workshops) on the northern side of Morisset St, Mitchell. We support the construction of the YDC on either of these sites for the following reasons: a) The site meets the site selection requirements b) Current and future land use for development adjacent to the site is compatible to the YDC facility c) The site’s location is suitable for co-location of facilities that can have a shared use capacity d) The site’s location is close to a well-serviced public transport corridor (along Flemington Rd), which could be the route of a light rail service in future years. e) The site offers opportunity for interaction and networking with organisations located in Mitchell, which could lead to relationship/s providing employment and/ or further training options, for inmates of the YDC.

The GCC has not considered options relating to the proposed YDC sites at Fyshwich or Symonston The GCC has not considered options relating to the proposed sites at Fyshwich or Symonston, as we consider that others are in a better situation to appreciate the benefits and/ or disadvantages of locating the YDC in these locations.

Further information: The site’s location also provides opportunities for the planning and construction of facilities that will be suitable for community use, in addition to use by the YDC. This will provide for cost effective provision of education, training, recreation, sporting and community facilities; on a scale that could not be justified if the facilities were used exclusively by the YDC. The GCC suggests that consideration be given to locating the YDC on the 15ha site, with community/ YDC facilities being established on the 10ha site. Facilities that could be considered for coordinated community/ YDC use could include: ? Educational/ training facility ? Oval and sports training facilities ? Swimming pool and exercise/ gym facility ? Community use/ social and training facility incorporating options for activities such as craftwork (e.g. pottery, weaving, painting, sculpturing, art crafts, quilting etc) woodwork, horticulture, metalwork, vehicle restoration, etc. Note - This could be modeled on the Loins Youth Haven (Kambah). The GCC does not support the following The GCC does not support the proposal to construct the YDC on site identified (in community consultation workshops) on the eastern side of Wells Station Rd, Mitchell. The GCC considers that this site is inferior to the other two Mitchell sites, due to: 1) Its proximity to established residential development in Watson. 2)

Its distance from the existing public transport services (on Flemington Rd)

Health for Seniors As we age our health status becomes more and more important to us. We are all aware that the onset of disease becomes a reality as we age and the implications of living with and treating illnesses can impact on every aspect of our dreams and aspirations, our relationships and financial status. Our health is determined by two main factors ? ?

our genetic makeup our ongoing lifestyle choices in regard to nutrition, exercise, smoking, use of medication and stress management

It would seem simple to conclude that we have absolute freedom of choice in regard to our lifestyle ie what we choose to eat, how we choose to exercise etc. But it is not quite so simple. How we choose to live our lives is determined by a great many factors including our education, our early conditioning, our financial status, our support systems and our ability to access services. To make healthy choices in life we need opportunities to choose, encouragement from other to sustain healthy options and o ngoing education. As we age it is even more important to stay physically active in order to stay healthy than when we were young. However the activity needs to be suited to our level of ability, our interests and be geared to provide the best health outcomes for concerns about heart disease, osteoporosis, Type II diabetes, arthritis and depression as well as maintain ability levels for everyday living. Helen Palethorpe, who works with the YMCA of Canberra, has for many years been developing and providing physical activity programs for older people in Canberra. She is aware of the issues and aware of the needs of older adults. She says “I know that people want to exercise in order to stay active and independent. I know that they like a quiet class environment and to have an opportunity to meet and make new friends. I also know that they are more cautious in their exercise and more anxious about getting injured. And I know that they like to attend programs close to home.” The YMCA of Canberra has now established many physical activity programs for older people in a wide range of locations in Canberra but the Gungahlin district has to date missed out. This is about to change with the introduction of a “PrYme Movers” (the name for YMCA older adult programs) class at the Gungahlin Community Centre on Mondays at 9.30am as from 10 th October. This program will be for men and women over 55, no matter how inactive at present and is geared to improve strength, balance, heart/lung capacity and flexibility. The cost will be $6/class. If you would like more information about this program please call 61620991 or 62306224.

W ORMS: Are your loved ones at risk? The facts about heartworm, zoonotic diseases and regular worming Why are heartworms such a problem? The disease caused by heartworms in dogs is very serious, risky to treat, difficult to cure and often fatal. Prevention however, is simple, and definitely the best option for protecting your pet. Heartworms cause major damage to the large blood vessels near the heart, hindering blood flow, increasing blood pressure, and causing fluid to build up in the lungs. Coughing, laboured breathing and rapid tiring on exercise are common clinical signs. Heart failure generally results, which may lead to collapse and death. Much of the internal damage done to the dog by these parasites occurs before any outward clinical signs of heartworm infection are evident. Heartworm larvae spread from dog to dog via mosquitoes, therefore the risk of infection is high in many areas of Australia.

How can you Heartworm?

protect

your

dog

against

Complete heartworm protection for your dog is as simple as one tasty Interceptor® Spectrum Flavour Tab each month. Not only does monthly dosing with Interceptor Spectrum prevent heartworm infection, but important intestinal worms, including roundworm, whipworm, hookworm and tapeworm are also controlled.

?

Tapeworms: hydatid tapeworms lead to the formation of cysts in the vital organs of humans, which can be life-threatening and require surgical removal. How can you protect your pet and your family?

You can protect your dog against worms, as well as protecting your family against the risk of zoonotic parasites, with these simple steps: ? Treat your dog monthly with Interceptor Spectrum – its broad-spectrum coverage protects your dog against heartworm and all the important intestinal worms, thereby also reducing their spread. ?

Ensure the family’s hands are washed before eating, after playing outside or patting the dog.

?

Prevent dogs from licking kids’ faces.

?

Clean up and dispose of your dog’s droppings from the yard quickly to minimise the spread of worm eggs.

Remembering to worm your pet This is now easy with a free SMS or Email Reminder System. Simply log onto www.pets.novartis.com to register your details or grab a postage paid form from Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital . ® Interceptor Spectrum is a registered trademark of Novartis Animal Health, Basel, Switzerland

What are zoonotic parasites? These are parasites which can transfer from animals to people, causing various diseases ranging from minor complaints through to potentially very harmful illnesses. It is important for pet owners to regularly worm their pets in order to protect family members (particularly children) against these worms which have zoonotic potential: ?

Roundworms: if eggs are accidentally ingested (from contact with contaminated soil or pet hair), larvae can migrate through the body tissues and cause problems such as blindness. Hookworms: immature larvae can penetrate human skin, causing intensely itchy, red tracts as the larvae wander about in the skin. This is sometimes known as ‘Summer Itch’.

“ Runner's Knee” Not just for runners

despair

~

Pain in the front of the knee is one of the most common reasons athletes visit a sports physician in the absence of trauma. Knee pain often results in poorer performance, altered training schedules, and in extreme cases abandonment of the sport from frustration. It’s not time to though.

The knee is the largest joint in the body. Because the body's weight and momentum is absorbed by the legs one at a time, a tremendous amount of force is created at the knee joint during walking and running. One common problem frequently encountered by athletes, is Patello-Femoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS), often referred to as "runner's knee". The thigh's quadricep muscles all attach into the patella (kneecap). The patella however is a "floating" bone that is attached by a very strong tendon into the tibia (shin bone). With each bend of the knee, the patella glides up and down in a groove at the end of the femur (thigh bone). PFPS occurs primarily as a result of poor patellar alignment in this groove that is irritated each time the knee bends and straightens. The patella usually deviates subtly towards the outside in PFPS. This causes irritation of the tendon (tendonosis) and bursa (bursitis). Think about how many times a runner's knee bends and straightens during the course of a three kilometer run! The term "runner's knee" however suggests that only runner's can get this problem. This is simply not true. This condition is seen often in tennis players, dancers, cyclists and many other activities where knee bending is involved. Gardeners are particularly vulnerable to PFPS since they tend to bend down on their knees for extended periods at a time. The correction of this problem results from improved patellar alignment. This is accomplished by performing prescribed stretches and exercises that can often be done at home. Other factors that can contribute to PFPS that should be considered by your chiropractor include ankle alignment (flat feet),

knee alignment (bow legs or knock knees), Q angles (hip width), pelvic motion and associated soft tissue tightness (hamstrings, quadriceps, IT band). PFPS is a condition that typically responds very well to conservative care. Please consult your sports chiropractor if knee pain limits your lifestyle. Help may be closer than you think.
