Opinion polls are becoming less reliable in predicting political votes, as seen in recent high-profile cases such as the 2016 US Presidential election and Brexit. This research proposes that the application of machine learning to social media can provide a viable alternative, while also addressing underlying issues found in traditional methods such as social desirability bias and confirmation bias.

This project developed an accurate and interpretable model of brain-predicted age differences (brainPAD using open-access MRI data. The model was validated on external datasets, containing rich cognitive data. The brainPAD -cognitive function relationship was assessed in each external dataset in order to investigate its utility for objective measurement of cognitive function, which is critical in order to identify individuals at risk of significant cognitive decline.
The social network analysis (SNA) is now commonly used to characterise behavioural dynamics of social groups. The increasing complexity of SNA data necessitates the investigation of novel strategies to transform such data into useful metrics, which can subsequently be used to support day-to-day decision making. A novel matrix, Animal Importance is derived based on GPS mobility data to explore and identify atypical social behaviours cows in smart dairy farming.

Finalists Lei Xu
Saurabh Goel
Bank of Ireland
Pramerica
Dr. Lei Xu has been working in machine learning and predictive analysis for over 10 years. He is passionate about leveraging the STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills to generate useful insight and transform business. By demonstrating two machine learning projects he led last year on propensity models and nextbest-action, he presented how predictive analysis enables data-driven marketing in the banking industry.
Saurabh’s work focuses on using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to help a P&C insurer understand the detailed cause of loss in homeowner’s claims. Machine Learning models, as well as Word2Vec models, were trained to identify the drivers of high severity losses. A framework of Cause, Device, and Location of loss in homes was developed. Which was then ingested by risk mitigation and claims IT teams to make data-driven decisions.
