Stress In crazy times such as these, crazy thoughts are bound to go through our heads. Let's try and curb them by understanding the two types of stress:

› Distress is defined as extreme anxiety, sorrow and pain – the characteristics we typically think of when we think about stress.

Emotional Intelligence Our emotional intelligence (EI) comes into play when we face extreme circumstances. During such times, awareness is key. EI is a relatively new term used to measure a person’s understanding of themselves and others around them. Sitting at home all day can be stressful and anxiety can kick in for many reason (e.g. health worries and job security). In layman’s terms, emotional intelligence is being intelligent about your emotions (i.e. recognising your feelings, understanding your thoughts and actions and how others around you perceive them). EI always comes into play during such times and understanding the situation and accepting it in a positive way can make a difference to you and the people around you.

Time out from Technology It is unrealistic to think that we can live in today’s society without the use of modern technology. When we are not checking work emails, we are usually checking our social media channels, sometimes to the point of becoming completely absorbed. Take some time out from technology. We know boredom comes into play, but try turning off your phone or laptop for a couple of hours to talk, play or listen to music. And remember: overanalysing the news and social media coverage of Covid-19 can have a negafive effect on your mental health. Stick to the guidelines and try and get on with your day.
