Hello, hope you had fun learn-
ing how to ceilidh dance last night. Many of you will have probably woken up covered in bruises but you better suck it up and get set for tonight. You guys are genuinely the object of jealousy for thousands of second, third and fourth year students, let alone all those sad sad graduates, who all wish they could be a carefree fresher once more. So make sure you don’t waste a minute of this week and do EVERYTHING you possibly can! This is going to be one of the best weeks of your life. While we recommend you try out both student unions and lots of different activities during your FW13 experience, we have to tell you that we have the most amazing line up at GUU this year, which quite frankly blows everyone else’s efforts out of the water. From amazing DJs like Ministry Of Sound to fantastic music events such as the wonderful Open Mic. Exciting events from The Freshers’ -3-
Week Debate to the 10 Hour Superhero Party and so much more, we have something to get involved in for absolutely everyone. Even you. And if you want to have a kneesup or just a few beers, we have the legendary Beer Bar open all week, right at the heart of the Union. Keep up to date with what’s going on this week in our posters and leaflets papering campus, on Facebook at facebook.com/ GUUnion, on Twitter @GUUnion, and on our brand new mobile-app by typing myapp.is/guufreshers into your web browser. There’s no excuse for missing out! So what are you waiting for? Grab your friends, old and new, that weird flatmate no one likes and the mature student from the floor above, and get down here ASAP. The booths in the Beer Bar are filling up. We’ll see you soon. Lots of love The GUUi

IRON STOMACH I
can promise you there is no greater way to spend your Freshers’ Friday. Join us in the Beer Bar as your newest friends step up and take part in this famous (around campus) eating challenge. It’s less about the vomit, or the fact you’re watching people put gruesome things in their mouths, than it is the atmosphere. You will never in your university life see the Beer Bar as busy as it is upon this day of Freshers’ Week. If you miss it, you’ll really honestly regret it. In previous years contestants have choked down raw fish and onion, pints of chillies and of course (as rules are rules) spew.
If you’re looking to participate, costumes are appreciated but generally, you’re going to get covered in A LOT of sick and probably end up naked and quivering, so just be sure to wear clean underwear. For audience members (and this is a serious warning/important piece of advice) get down to the Beer Bar EARLY. You WANT to have a good view for this because it is going to get busy. You do not want to be stuffed at the back hearing everyone’s reactions, but unable to actually see what’s happening. On the other hand, you do not want to be at the very front in the so called “splash zone”. Imagine the Shamu show in Seaworld, but instead of a lovable whale with a wave of water, it’s vomit. Yeah… Even IF it may not seem like your sort of thing, I can promise you that it’s a hell of a lotta fun when you’re watching (probably less fun participating).
For me Iron Stomach has a special place in my heart, as an absolute highlight of my own Freshers’ week. I watched in admiration as my new mate Joe stuffed the unspeakable “food” down his throat with watering eyes. Now Joe is Convenor of Games, you can be sure he will make this Freshers’ -Harriet Johnston experience better than ever.

Endeavours GUU has recently launched a new series of talks, which feature
people from all different walks of life to appeal to various interests. Accompanied by an acoustic music set from various local bands this is a great way to chill out and learn a bit more about different career paths and things to be involved in after we all shake off our graduation caps at the end of our time here at the University of Glasgow. Our Freshers’ Week Endeavours talk features Robert Reid, Honorary Vice President of Partick Thistle Football Club. Author and Club Historian, Robert Reid is a man of many talents! He’s happiest when he’s being described simply as a fan of the club he’s supported since he was a boy. Robert, author of the definitive book about the Jags, “Red and Yellow Forever”, can be found most Saturdays, at least when Thistle are playing at Firhill, guiding tours around the ground and introducing people to the mysteries of Partick Thistle and all that this great club stands for. In this talk he will be discussing Partick Thistle and his involvement with the club as well as the future of the SPL more generally. Our music set after the talk from Robert will be delivered by Bronagh And The Boys. Hailing from Glasgow, the six-piece group are influenced by the likes of Fleetwood Mac and Amy Winehouse and are sure to provide a fantastic finale to Reid’s footie chat. Don’t miss this one guys! -Claire Flynn

Adopt A Fresher Your exams have come and gone.
Summer has flown by. And now you are a fresher; a student at Glasgow, a bloomin’ great Uni! This is exciting; but can also be daunting. You are in a completely new environment and have probably moved here from outside Glasgow, Scotland or the UK. You’ve taken that leap to leave your home, family and friends. It’s likely you know hardly anyone here. Of course, there are endings, but also new beginnings. This week should open you up to meeting so many new people, friends, enemies and even lovers! However, perhaps you’re having trouble of knowing where to start. Perhaps you are feeling home sick. Perhaps you’ve just not mingled with the right group of people you naturally get along with. Do you wish for a fun and different way to break the ice? Well then we have the perfect event for you! -9-
“Do you wish for a fun and different way to break the ice? Well then we have the perfect event for you!” Adopt a Fresher involves Freshers being put into families with two Freshers’ Helpers as parents. Now, I bet you are thinking “ha, that sounds boring”. Well you are wrong because it will take place in the Beer Bar, and most importantly, there will be loads of fun games, many involving alcohol! This is the perfect way to break the tension, meet new people and have a lot of fun at the same time. So, if you are feeling a tad home sick or just want to have a hilarious afternoon, then come down to the Beer Bar on Friday at 3! -Joseph Meaden
GUU Overheard Be careful guys- the walls have ears... I’ve had all the sex this week. Complex carbohydrates come at me! They’re not a Fresher or a Helper so what’s the point? I feel so tired. Aye darling you look shit.
Jokes Of The Day In order to ward off any post-alcohol blues we’ll provide you with a couple of hilarious (ly awful) jokes. I was walking into a shop this morning and someone threw a block of cheese at my head. I turned around and said “well that was mature.” Did you hear about the fire in the circus? It was in the tents.
