Hello, we here at the GUUi

hope you had a fabulous time last night. How good were the Jetpack boys? You are genuinely the object of jealousy for thousands of second, third and fourth year students, let alone all those sad sad graduates, who all wish they could be a carefree fresher once more. So make sure you don’t waste a minute of this week and do EVERYTHING you possibly can! This may well be one of the best weeks of your life. While we recommend you try out both student unions and lots of different activities during your FW13 experience, we have to tell you that we have the most amazing line up at GUU this year, which quite frankly blows everyone else’s efforts out of the water. From amazing DJs like Radio 1’s Huw Stephens to fantastic bands like The Emerald Armada, the Freshers’ Week Debate to Al Fresco Open Mic, our Big All Day Games Event (B.A.D.G.E) to our first ever

Comic Con and so much more, we have something for absolutely everyone to get involved in. Even you. And if you want to have a kneesup or just a few beers, we have the legendary Beer Bar open all week, right at the heart of the Union. Keep up to date with what’s going on this week in our posters and leaflets papering campus, on Facebook at facebook.com/ GUUnion, on Twitter @GUUnion, and on our brand new mobile-app by typing myapp.is/guufreshers into your web browser. There’s no excuse for missing out! So what are you waiting for? Grab your friends, old and new, that weird flatmate no one likes and the mature student from the floor above, and get down here ASAP. The booths in the Beer Bar are filling up. We’ll see you soon. Lots of love The GUUi

B.A.D.G.E.

BADGE is what it says on the tin,

it’s a Big All Day Games Event. Let the Games Committee take over your day and fill it with excitement. You’ll rack up points throughout the day as you take part in a variety of events; some alcohol fuelled, others not. Costumes are encouraged, however, do not wear something hot, or potentially sweaty. In the most recent BADGE, my team and I thought it would be a great plan to wear full boiler suits borrowed from some vet friends. I do not recommend running around in a full jump-suit for a full day. There’s sure to be events out and about in the West End, like the Scavenger Hunt or Trolley Race. In the Scunt, as it’s widely known, you’ll find yourself running around gathering items and photos. Challenges range from the apparently easy (taking photos in particular parts of the university which may be difficult to access) to the near impossible (bringing a live animal back to the GUU). At the most recent BADGE, during the Month of Games, creatures such as a dog, crab, rabbit and baby chick named -5-

Badger, found their way to the union with the help of several teams. Points are given with respect to how difficult challenges are and how inventively/ambitiously challenges have been completed. The Trolley Race is what it is; trundle down to Kelvingrove, where one team member will hop into a trolley, whilst the others shuttle them as quickly as possible around the course. Other events occur within our very own union, like the entertaining cat walk and the reef race. Further details and events will be revealed throughout the day however you KNOW the Games Committee will have thought of some brilliant ways for you to spend your Tuesday afternoon. So get yourself two other pals and some team spirit and pop over to the GUU. It promises to be one of the best events (day or night) of the whole week and you’ll be gagging to do it again in February. -Harriet Johnston

What’s So Funny? Don’t miss out on the comedy at GUU tonight! We have some hilarious people to entertain y’all: Carl Donnelly His name has been mistaken as “Carl Bubbly”; he’s self-confessed at being awkward when it comes to sex; but Donnelly’s comedy career has spanned almost a decade. Now at the age of 31, he was recently nominated for the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award.

Ray Peacock This Northern bloke has a rather up-front yet energetic way of performing. He made his debut at the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe Festival with character acts and later out-of-character performances. In 2007, he formed a successful partnership with Gamble, and was named the act creating the biggest “Buzz” at Edinburgh Fringe. Ed Gamble The other, younger half of comedy duo Peacock and Gamble, Ed began performing stand-up at university. In 2007 he was a finalist in the Chortle Student Comedy Awards. Shortly after this, Peacock rang him up and “begged” him to take part in his podcasts! Since then he’s performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, presented for BBC Radio 4 and performed on Russell Howard’s Good News. Naz Osmanoglu He was the winner of the Amused Moose Laugh-off Competition, Chortle Best Newcomer Nominee 2010, Runner-up in So You Think You’re Funny and has been featured in BBC3’s Live at The Electric. -Joseph Meaden - Follow us: twitter.com/guuimagazine

With

Huw Stephens

the amount of amazing events and activities being flaunted from every direction during Freshers’ Week, it can be hard to decide where you should go. But if you like new music, if you like dancing, if you like nights so good you won’t want to leave even when the lights come on, then don’t worry, tonight GUU is a safe bet.

In addition to his radio shows, Huw has been touring the country’s clubs and festivals. His Propaganda tours have been a huge hit and he is due to start another very soon, playing at ABC in Glasgow on Friday the 25th of October.

The Debates Chamber will once again be taken over by another world class DJ set to top off todays brimming schedule of events. Maintaining the momentum of an already buzzing week, Radio One’s Huw Stephens will be hitting the decks in the GUU from 10pm.

Known for seeking out and championing upcoming artists, the Welsh DJ has attracted praise such as the title, the ‘King of New Music’. Huw has brought many under the radar musicians into the public eye through his weekly BBC Introducing Radio 1 podcast and the SWN festival in Cardiff which he runs every year, making him one of the leading pioneers in finding fresh talent.

Having started his career in radio at just 17, Huw now hosts two shows on international radio station, BBC Radio 1. You can hear him on a Wednesday night from midnight or from 1-4pm every weekend.

Huw’s set will undoubtedly be crammed full of floor filling tracks and the best new music around, making it a performance not to be missed. Complete your day of games and laughs with a night of simply really great music.

Freshers’ Week Is Crazy

Thousands of new people, thousands of flyers for thousands of events.

It feels like your life is going to be this hectic forever. The truth is, university is what you make of it. As any of you who ventured into the beautiful Bute Hall for the freshers’ address will have repeatedly heard, you really should get involved in all aspects of University life. There are so many incredible opportunities on your doorstep, it’s really important to make the most of it. With the GUSA and Freshers’ fairs starting today now is the time to act. Sign up for some of Glasgow’s many clubs and societies, many of which are affiliated with the GUU. It doesn’t matter if your flat mates aren’t going, it doesn’t matter if you’ve never done anything like it before – just go! The GUUi is one of those opportunities just waiting for you to grasp. With monthly articles covering everything from politics to culture we are always on the look out for contributors. Don’t worry if you missed our open meeting yesterday. If you are a budding writer, photographer or graphic designer, contact us at libraries@guu.com or come to one of our meetings, every Monday in the Bridie Library at 5pm. As the wonderful Breffni O’Connor, former GUU board member, said yesterday in the Fresher’s Address, “Your life should never be static, you should always be learning and growing”. -Kate Whitaker

Joke Of The Day In order to ward off any post-alcohol blues we’ll provide you with a hilarious (ly awful) joke. Why was the biscuit crying?
