MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello everyone!

Well, January has flown by very quickly, that includes our 2020 awards night that celebrated the three plays of 2020. Congratulations to all the winners and once more a massive thank you to all the directors, cast, crew, volunteers and committee members for all your hard work last year.

As we move forward Managing Carmen is entering its final phase of rehearsals, tickets have been selling fast for this show so make sure you book now before you miss out. I know everyone involved is working very hard to bring this challenging and entertaining show to life.

TAG kicks off on the 6th of Feb, It is so great to see the future of our club truly getting involved beyond the monthly sessions and I hope that everyone welcomes and supports them as they do.

Our Committees are hard at work and we will include a list of all members and their roles so that if you need anything you know who to contact. As always you can always contact me for anything you need or any suggestions you may have, our meetings are on the second Monday of every month for both committees.

AUDITIONS CLUE ON STAGE AUDITION NOTICE Clue - on Stage

Adapted from the screenplay by Jonathan Lynn Additional materials by Hunter Foster, Eric Price & Sandy Rustin Adapted from the Paramount Pictures Film written by Jonathan Lynn and the board game from Hasbro Inc., It’s a dark and stormy night, and you’ve been invited to a very unusual dinner party. Each of the guests has an alias, the butler offers a variety of weapons, and the host is, well . . . dead. So whodunnit? Join the iconic oddballs known as Scarlet, Plum, White, Green, Peacock, and Mustard as they race to find the murderer in Boddy Manor before the body count stacks up. Based on the cult classic film and the popular board game, Clue is a madcap comedy that will keep you guessing until the final twist.

YVETTE (20-30) - A sexy, French Maid, with her own secret aspirations. (Also plays THE REPORTER in the final scene).

MISS SCARLET (20-35) - A dry, sardonic D.C. Madam who is more interested in secrets than sex.

MRS. PEACOCK (25+) - The Church-going wife of a Senator. A bit batty, neurotic, and quick to hysteria.

MRS. WHITE (45+) - A pale, morbid, and tragic woman. Mrs. White may or may not be the murderer of her five ex-husbands.

COLONEL MUSTARD (30+) - A puffy, pompous, dense, blow-hard of a military man.

PROFESSOR PLUM (20-35) - An academic Casanova who woos women with his big... brain.

MR. GREEN (20-30) - A timid, yet officious, rule follower. He’s a bit of a klutz and awfully anxious.

Ensemble x 2 (Any age) - will have multiple smaller roles All roles are open to anyone of any age or gender - stage ages are a guideline only Auditionees may be required to do a cold read but should also bring a prepared piece no longer than 5 minutes.

Rehearsals will commence: 18th February on Thursdays (7pm-10pm) and Sundays (11am to 3pm) with additional rehearsals added as required closer to the production opening.

Performance dates are: 29th, 30th, April, May the 1st, 2nd (matinée), 6th, 7th, 8th, (two performances), 9th (matinée), 13th, 14th and 15th. Bump out is on the 16th.

AWARDS NIGHT 2020 RECOGNITION AND ENCOURAGEMENT On a lovely warm evening, the 30th January, Garrick Theatre Club held their annual Awards Night, the night they celebrate and honour the directors, set builders, technicians, casts and crew along with all the hundred unthanked workers that make up a theatre company.

Hosted by Jordan D’Arcy Tabb, the evening began with a welcome by the President, Rodney Stickells-Palmer.

This was followed by the Past President Lynne Devenish’s presentation of an In Memoriam video of those members we lost during 2020.

Gail Lusted, the talented Teens at Garrick coordinator then presented the TAG awards.

much for their hard work and following a short video presentation of the year 2020 in review – The Year That Was, they made their awards.

And David Young: Alan Shaw for ‘Versatility and Comic timing as the Butlers’ in The Importance of Being Earnest Dakota Horrigan-Owen for ‘Her eagerness & enthusiasm in the moment’ as an ensemble member in The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Dale James, the immediate past President then made her presentation of the President’s

Encouragement Award to Victoria Abbott for her work as a TAG member, and her role in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Immediate Past President Dale James then made a special presentation to Kerry Goode for her long and loyal support of Garrick in many roles, both on stage and off.

The Davids were then presented - the first two were not for acting, but for merit, the Ken Smith Merit Award. The recipients go about their business in quiet enjoyment with no expectations 5

of any special recognition. They are the quiet achievers, the unsung heroes of our club. This award is determined by the Executive Committee and for 2020 were awarded to Colleen Bradford and Yvonne Starr.

The Norma Standing Award - For characterisation and/or analysis of a role or play by an actor or director was awarded to Kody Fellows for his role in The Hound of the Baskervilles.

The Swan Magazine Award for Best Set was given to James Nailen, Caileb HombergenCrute and Geoff Holt for Bette & Joan.

The Ailsa Travers Award For Best Costumed Play was presented to Marjorie de Caux, Colleen Bradford and Sarah-Jane Hombergen-Crute for The Importance of Being Earnest.

The Fred Petersen Award For Exceptional Theatre Craft. This award is not for anything special, but for something very special, such as the set for The Importance of Being Earnest with its three distinct manifestations - James Nailen and Ray Egan.

And finally the Philip Jamieson Award, for best production at Garrick (all productions nominated) was awarded to Douglas Sutherland-Bruce for The Importance of Being Earnest.

The formal part of the evening ended with a brief overview of the coming year’s season and thanks to all the volunteers who worked hard to make this evening possible, all the casts, crews and helpers for the shows from 2020, the incredible technical team who put together all the videos that were shown on the night - Geoff Holt, Caileb Hombergen-Crute and Stuart Ridgeway and chiefly, the audiences who come along and clap and who make ultimately all of this happen.

GARRICK THEATRE: PROJECTS AND FACILITIES MANAGER Committee member, Geoff Holt has been been appointed to a newly created portfolio, that of Projects and Facilities Manager.

The aim of this portfolio is:

• to identify improvements, repairs and advancements to the theatre's facilities,

• prioritise the required works, including budgeting,

• develop short, medium and long term plans,

• manage projects as required.

Geoff will be working with the executive and committee to conduct an audit of the entire theatre to ascertain where improvements, repairs, alterations and additions can be made to maximise the fullest possible potential of the theatre's facilities, within the limitations of space, possible heritage issues, City of Swan requirements (the building owner) and cost.

He would also like to hear from interested members and patrons with ideas and suggestions.

MANAGING CARMEN DAVID WILLIAMSON AO IS probably Australia’s leading playwright and can truly be described as ‘the voice of middle Australia.’ His characters are true and vivid and recognizable and the man next to you in the queue or the stands at the footy.

Primarily a playwright much of his work has been filmed into some critically and financially successful productions – The Club, Travelling North, Don’s Party and so on, as well as working on screenplays such as Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously.

In 2012 he wrote Managing Carmen, often described as ‘his latest’, although a prolific writer he has published seven plays since then.

But in Managing Carmen Williamson

Managing Carmen runs from 8:00pm on the 25th February, 2021 until March 13th, with matinees on the 28th February and March 6th and 7th at Garrick Theatre, 16 Meadow Street, Guildford.

Managing Carmen is the Garrick Theatre Club’s choice for the opening salvo in their 2021 season. Directed by theatre stalwart Siobhan Vincent (The Glass Menagerie, Popcorn) and with a set designed by Jake Newby it promises to be a block-buster.

Vincent says that Managing Carmen is difficult to stage as there are nearly fifty scene changes as the action flits from offices to bedrooms to club rooms and presents a challenge to cast and crew.

She has attracted an experienced and talented cast and the play is well into rehearsal before it opens at the end of February.

Vincent: ‘The plot concerns Brent Lyall, a freakish talented young sportsman. At the age of twenty-three, the country lad is already captain of one of the most successful football clubs 10

REQUEST FOR HELP CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE AS MANY OF YOU may know the Container for Change scheme has been launched.

Rodney has registered Garrick for this and there will be some changes to recycling at the bar. This will be simple enough, cans and glass must be seperated.

The big news about this is that anyone can donate their 10c refund. So by using the Garrick scheme i.d you are able to donate your cans’ deposit to the theatre.

We will use these refunds to keep up maintenance and upgrade and would be very

much appreciated. (Some projects we are working on at the moment are foyer and bio box upgrades)

The process is easy, go to your local depot. The staff take the i.d number and assign a bay, then they take the containers for a quick sort and count, fill in the paper work and return any bags/tubs. It takes ten minutes, tops.
