28 Without the Frame Death Valley Migration by David duChemin During the day, the Racetrack Playa is a rough place to be, let alone try to make photographs. The heat and reflected light make it tough to do anything but look for shelter. But as the sun falls, the evening cools, and you could spend hours there.

his issue’s main theme is landscapes. We’ve included tips and techniques to help you improve your photography, plus essential tools for every landscape photographer’s photo bag and virtual toolbox, to take you from before the shot to post-production. You’ll find inspiring images of grand vistas and beautiful scenery, and portraits of the earth in moments of violent transition. You’ll get to know more about the people who work hard to make these fascinating images too. Behind each great image, there’s a great story—like the one about David duChemin’s encounter with a strange photographer when he thought he was alone in the desert.

T

In his interview, George Kourounis shares his insights on what it actually means to be a storm chaser, from his first experiences to his latest projects. Living on the edge, he follows tornadoes and even helps other photographers get close encounters with these fascinating phenomena. Kourounis was also a witness to one of last decade’s saddest tragedies, Hurricane Katrina. His story brings out the unpredictability of nature and the risk inherent in all adventures. Guy Langevin’s Close-up column explores the idea of a different type of risk. Though we all know that if we never risk anything, we won’t actually achieve anything new, how many of us actively push ourselves out of our comfort zones? As George Kourounis said, “We spend so much time and effort to make our lives easy and comfortable, but that is the perfect recipe for mediocrity.” It comes down to what we are striving for, photographically speaking. Photography can serve many purposes. Maybe for you, it’s a way to discover something new about yourself, or a means of creating connections with people or nature. Maybe you just do it to have fun. In each situation, risk can take many different forms— but in all cases, too much comfort is probably your worst enemy, if you want to really live an adventure. Valérie Racine Editorial Director

EXPOSURE YOUR VIEW . WHAT’S ON . IN FOCUS . BOOK REVIEWS

[your view] ON PETER BURIAN’S BLOG POST “IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE A LIVING FROM STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY SALES?” I think you are spot on—for most people it can’t replace a full time income, even if you work at it full time. Initially things seem good, but the challenge over time is coming up with new, fresh ideas that aren’t already over done and don’t compete with your own imagery. And you don’t just need a few good ideas— you need hundreds or thousands! —Brad Calkins via the blog

IN RESPONSE TO THE GLOBAL NEWS STORY OF THE AIR CANADA PASSENGER’S LOST PHOTO GEAR Never ever check camera gear. Ever. —Julie Hahn via Facebook I like how the baggage crew drops a suitcase off the plane just as the reporter says the Penticton man warns passengers to think twice about checking their valuables. Perfect timing. LOL. —Steve Gale via Facebook I have followed Doug since he started his career and believe he is sufficiently experienced to know you don’t check gear. I have been in his position. The overhead bins on those small commuter planes are so tight a bag that fits the requirements might not actually fit. And, as he alluded if I read between the lines, Air Canada instructed him to check the luggage. If he relented they could have refused him access to his flight. It really isn’t as

TRAVELLING WITH CAMERA EQUIPMENT ON AIR CANADA The spirited discussion on our Facebook page made it clear that some of you have concerns and strong opinions about travelling with photo gear. We decided to contact Air Canada to see if we could get more information on their rules and procedures, and to ask if a passenger could be forced to check a carry-on bag. Air Canada Media Relations manager Isabelle Arthur responded, “As ticket conditions state, Air Canada will not accept liability for cameras and electronic items and therefore recommends that customers always ensure that all their valuables including electronics, 8

simple as never, ever. I’ve been in Doug’s shoes and have travelled for 26 years to 28 countries; so I know better as well. The option is not very attractive: walk. —Dale Wilson via Facebook

RE: DALE WILSON’S BLOG POST “HAS TECHNOLOGY TAKEN THE MAGIC FROM PHOTOGRAPHY?” The magic is still there. You just do it now in front of a computer instead of in a darkroom. It took me some years to accept that, but it’s true. —Gary Hubert via Facebook The magic occurs before the photographer clicks the shutter. Technology is useful in displaying that magic according to a photographer’s inspiration, aspiration and talent. Technology can make crap look good for those with no talent. —Jacques Fortier via Facebook Jacques Fortier and Gary Hubert: You both raise very valid points. What I have found over the years, however, is that digital photography has taken the fun out of learning. Monitor the photography chat rooms—everyone is asking how to do this, or how to do that. What has happened to learning by trial and error, and through making mistakes? Today we demand instant gratification, and that is something a darkroom does not provide. There really is something magical about waiting to see a print appear as you ponder your exposure or technique with the enlarger. —Dale Wilson via Facebook

documentation, medication, car keys, money, etc., are with them or in their in carry-on bags and NOT in their checked bags, and we always include this information in our different seasonal travel tips: http://bit.ly/1phOCww. Unless designated by safety authorities as dangerous goods, you can reassure your readers that we would certainly not force anyone to place their valuables into their checked luggage.”

customers are asked to deposit their carry-on items on a cart as they board the plane. Laptop computers and their spare lithium ion batteries must be removed from any carry-on baggage that is deposited on such carts.” In this situation, Arthur explained that passengers leave their carry-ons on the trolley a few minutes before the bags are placed in a special cargo hold during the flight; after landing, the baggage is unloaded onto the trolley for passengers to pick up.

In addition, she mentioned AC Secure, a program for special handling of high-value shipments, and sent Air Canada’s rules on lithium batteries, as stated on their website under Restricted and Prohibited Items. In these rules, the company states, “On smaller aircraft (e.g. Jazz Dash-8 or CRJ) with limited onboard storage space,

What we would suggest is that you make sure your carry-on photo bag is small enough and flexible enough that it will fit even into the limited storage space of the smaller planes, or that you at least store your most valuable equipment in a mini-bag or pouch that you can pull out and keep with you, should your carry-on need to be out of your sight for any reason. [book reviews] by Jenny Montgomery CAPA IN COLOR text by Cynthia Young with contributions by Sally Stein DelMonico Books, $60, 208 pages, hard cover Though well known for his black-and-white war photography, photojournalist Robert Capa was an early adopter of colour film. Capa was working with it in the 1940s and 1950s, and usually carried two cameras with him—one for black-and-white film and one for colour. Capa’s text and images combine for excellent storytelling, pulling the reader into his adventures. If you are a fan of Capa’s work, you’ll certainly enjoy Capa in Color.

THE PHOTOBOOK: A HISTORY, VOLUME III text by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger Phaidon, $100, 304 pages, hard cover Parr and Badger’s third and final tome in their series covers photo books of the 20th and 21st centuries. Though I initially thought the book would have an extremely niche audience, I quickly discovered that reading about the many (sometimes obscure) photo books can be surprisingly entertaining. The passion of the authors is clear, and the attractive layout and accessible style of the text make it

appealing, even to those who are not already photo-book connoisseurs.

ANTON CORBIJN: LOOKING AT A MOST WANTED MAN photography and text by Anton Corbijn Schirmer/Mosel, $77, 180 pages, hard cover Photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn’s newest book offers a behind-the-scenes view of the making of his film A Most Wanted Man. Based on a spy novel by John le Carré, the film examines the war on terror and the realities of the life of a spy. The distinguished cast includes Phillip Seymour Hoffman, in what was his last leading role before his death. Featuring Corbijn’s compelling photos from on and off the set and his personal notes, Looking at a Most Wanted Man is the photographer’s third and last book to document the making of one of his movies.
