Since 2010, Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay provides audiences with images rich in emotion. This year is no exception.

Pour cette quatrième édition, nous avons souhaité donner une couleur spéciale à ce premier et unique festival de photojournalisme au Canada, en mettant à l’honneur les femmes photojournalistes. Elles sont de plus en plus nombreuses à nous offrir ce quelque chose de différent dans le regard qu’elles posent sur les thématiques qu’elles choisissent d’approfondir. Elles ont aussi des accès privilégiés à des sujets moins accessibles aux hommes.

For this fourth edition, we wanted to give a special dimension to the first and only festival of photojournalism in Canada, showcasing women photojournalists. More and more of them now offer us what something different in the perspective they provide on the topics they choose to pursue. They also have special access to issues less accessible to men.

Ce regard différent sera l’élément majeur de la programmation de l’édition 2013 de ce meeting international de photojournalisme qu’est Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay. Le festival vous permettra de découvrir le travail de photojournalistes féminines de renom tels Caroline Hayeur, Alexandra Boulat, Ami Vitale, Sarah Caron, Lizzie Sadin ou Benedicte Kurzen, mais aussi celui de plusieurs confrères masculins. Le festival vous donne l’occasion de côtoyer ces grands photographes. N’hésitez pas à les rencontrer et partager avec eux et elles cette passion que vous avez en commun. Au plaisir de vous y voir. This different perspective will be the major component of the 2013 edition of this international meeting of photojournalism that is Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay. The festival will let you to discover the work of renowned female photojournalists such as: Caroline Hayeur, Alexandra Boulat, Ami Vitale, Sarah Caron, Lizzie Sadin and Benedicte Kurzen, and several male colleagues as well. The Festival gives you the opportunity to meet these great photographers. Feel free to meet and share with them the passion you have in common. We look forward to see you there. Enjoy the festival.

Among the events of the fall season taking place in Saguenay, the Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay, international meeting of photojournalism, has made a name for itself, thanks to its hundreds of press photographs reflecting the world events. It has managed to attract people’s attention as much as the media’s. Following its ever growing success since 2010, the City of Saguenay is proudly teaming up again with the artisans of the camera for the fourth edition of the event that will allow its visitors to look back at some of the highlights from the news of 2012. Zoom is unquestionably an event not to be missed because of the constant increase of its exhibitions, its rich thematic variety, and the quality of its photographs that will bring so many enjoyable moments to its visitors. For 4 years, Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay has been shining the spotlight on original photographs from the four corners of the world and serving as an exceptional showcase for the craft of photojournalism.

Durant quatre fins de semaine, les festivaliers d’ici et d’ailleurs ont la chance d’assister à des conférences, des performances photographiques et des projections multimédias. The Government of Canada is pleased to lend its financial support once again to the organization of this event. During the four weekends of the Festival, visitors from near and far will have the opportunity to take in lectures, photographic performances and multimedia screenings. First and only Canadian and Quebec festival dedicated to photojournalism, Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay provides an opportinity for fans and visitors to marvel and realize the amazing power of the image. A success story, the Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay has carved out a key place in the tourism, arts and regional economic environment. With a unique and bold programming, this year’s 4th edition of international photojournalism event will be distinguished by a greater emphasis on women photojournalists, including the presence of the first female spokesperson of Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay 2013, Caroline Hayeur. At the last Grands prix du tourisme québécois National Awards Gala, the festival was awarded the National Gold Award in the category Festivals and events. Thanks to its networking and credibility on the international stage, the event was covered in several European media and attracted more than 135,000 people in November 2012. Le Consulat général de France à Québec a le grand plaisir de soutenir une nouvelle fois le Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay. The Consulat général de France in Quebec is very pleased to support once again the Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay. The festival, this year in its fourth edition, has been able to convert into a place of major event in Canada for national and international photojournalists. Since its inception, this festival has continued three objectives: to stimulate and support the development of photojournalism, encourage the transfer of knowledge and promote the free and unrestricted exchange of information. This year, the Department of Cooperation and Cultural Action of the Consulat général de France in Quebec invites four involved French photographers: Sarah Caron, Lizzie Sadin, Benedicte Kurzen and Nadia Benchallal and Cosmos photo represented by Annie Boulat. Each in their own way, these women give us the opportunity to see a facet of modern photojournalism.

The Saguenay Zoom Photo Festival’s fourth edition, promises to be even more enticing with numerous exhibitions of international caliber. It is therefore with great pleasure that the Pulperie de Chicoutimi/Regional Museum has once again agreed to participate in this colorful festival. We are proud, not just to present the World Press Photo exhibition from inside our walls, but equally our association with other exhibitions and activities related to the festival. During November, we invite you to visit the exhibitions, participate in the activities, the screenings, and the workshops and even meet the many photographers who have traveled from all over the globe for this internationally renowned event. REGARDER POUR MIEUX VOIR

Le photojournaliste d’aujourd’hui n’est autre qu’un troubadour insatiable parcourant villes et villages, rapportant des histoires dont les images sont imprégnées d’authenticité et de poésie. Il emporte dans son baluchon les démunis, les insoumis, les excentriques, les extrêmes, bref, les histoires des laissés-pour-compte. Les injustices sociales. Et le public veut voir ces récits, il en est friand. J’affirme même qu’il a besoin de ce photographe ambulant qui nous informe et nous confronte au travers de sa quête. Car les médias de masse jouent de moins en moins le rôle de producteur. Pigée dans des banques d’images en ligne au rabais, la photo est reléguée à une simple illustration plaquée sur un texte. Il est donc important de trouver des espaces de diffusion indépendants. Pour partager sa vision, le troubadour a besoin de murs de galeries, d’espaces virtuels et, bien sûr, de festivals.

LOOKING FOR A BETTER VIEW

Today’s photojournalist is merely an insatiable troubadour traveling towns and villages, relating stories whose images are imbued with authenticity and pœtry. He carries in his backpack the poor, the rebellious, the eccentric, the extreme, the brief and the stories of left-behinds. The social injustices. And people want to see these stories; they are fond of them. I even think that they need this itinerant photographer who informs us and confronts us through his quest for the mass media play less and less the role of producer. To pick from online discount image banks, the picture is relegated to a simple illustration plated on a text. It is therefore important to find spaces of independent distribution. To share his vision, the troubadour needs the walls of galleries, of virtual spaces and of course, of festivals.

Lauréate de plusieurs fondations et du Master Class World Press, ses photographies font l’objet d’expositions sur plusieurs continents. Elle a publié Odyssée moderne en 2004 et collabore régulièrement avec la presse française et internationale. Elle a reçu le Prix Canon de la Femme Photojournaliste 2012 décerné par l’AFJ (Association des Femmes Journalistes) en partenariat avec Le Figaro Magazine. 12

War photographer and tireless traveller Sarah Caron works on both up-to-the minute subjects as well as longer-term projects. Having earnes prizes awarded by several foundations and by World press Master Class, her photographs are currently exhibited on various continents. She published Odyssée moderne in 2004 and contributes to the French and the international press. She received the 2012 Canon Female Photojournalist Award from the AFJ (Association of Women Journalists) in partnership with Le Figaro Magazine.

MES YEUX, TON MONDE MY EYES, YOUR WORLD Le cheminement d’Ami Vitale en tant que photographe et cinéaste l’a amenée à visiter plus de 85 pays. Ses photographies ont été commandées par presque toutes les parutions internationales importantes et ses images montrées dans les musées et les galeries du monde entier. Elle est un des membres fondateurs du « Ripple Effect Images » et photographe sous contrat pour le magazine National Geographic. Elle donne fréquemment des conférences et des ateliers à travers les Amériques, l’Europe et l’Asie.

Ami Vitale’s journey as a photographer and a film maker has taken her to more than 85 countries. Her photographs have been commissioned by nearly every important international publication, and the images have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. She is a founding member of Ripple Effect Images and a contract photographer with National Geographic magazine. She frequently gives lectures and workshops throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Son travail, publié dans le monde entier, s’est vu décerner de nombreux prix et a été largement exposé, notamment à Visa pour l’image et à Bayeux-Calvados. Elle a participé au prestigieux World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass.

ALEXANDRA BOULAT VOYONS… LET’S SEE

Co-fondatrice de l’Agence VII, Alexandra Boulat est connue pour avoir, pendant près de vingt ans, capturé des images poignantes de gens affectés par les conflits. Ses reportages ont été publiés dans les plus grands magazines de la presse internationale. Le Fonds national d’art contemporain a acquis plusieurs de ses photos et elle fut nommée en France Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres en juillet 2007. Elle a reçu de nombreux prix internationaux tels que le World Press Photo.

Co-founder of Agence VII, Alexandra Boulat is known to, for almost 20 years, capture harrowing images of people affected by conflict. Her reports have been published in leading magazines of the international press. The Fond National d’Art Contemporain has acquired several of her photos and she was bestowed the insignia of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France in July, 2007. She has received numerous international awards such as the World Press Photo.

NADIA BENCHALLAL SISTERS : FEMMES MUSULMANES Après avoir étudié au Centre international de la photographie (CNI) à New York, la photojournaliste de renommée internationale Nadia Benchallal a collaboré à la réalisation de reportages pour plusieurs magazines internationaux et a reçu de nombreux prix. En 2012 et 2013, son projet sur les femmes musulmanes dans le monde, intitulé « Sisters: Work in Progress » a été exposé pour la première fois à NYU Abou Dhabi, NYU New York et au Maroc.

After her studies at the International Center of Photography in New York, world renowned photojournalist Nadia Benchallal collaborated to the realization of reports for many French and international magazines, and has received numerous awards. In 2012 and 2013, her project on Muslim women in the world, entitled “Sisters: Work in Progress”, was shown for the first time in NYU Abou Dhabi, NYU New York and in Morocco.

ANN-CHRISTINE WŒHRL SORCIÈRES EN EXIL WITCHES IN EXILE

Ann-Christine Wœhrl est une photographe indépendante basée en Allemagne. Son travail se concentre principalement sur les enjeux relatifs aux religions et aux femmes. Son projet « Sorcières en exil » a reçu des prix et a été publié à l’international. Le Stiftung Kulturwerk d’Allemagne lui a décerné un prix pour son projet actuel, « IN/VISIBLE », en vue de sa réalisation en 2014. Elle est représentée par Echo Photo et Gallery Pinter & Milch. Elle a également reçu le prix Canon 2012 de la Femme Photojournaliste décerné par l’AFJ (Association des femmes photojournalistes) en partenariat avec Le Figaro Magazine.

Ann-Christine Wœhrl is a freelance Photographer based in Germany. Her work mainly concentrates on religion and women issues. Her project “Witches in Exile“ was rewarded, and was internationally published and exhibited. Her current project “IN/VISIBLE“ was granted by Stiftung Kulturwerk, Germany for the completion in 2014. She also received the 2012 Canon Award of Woman Photojournalist awarded by the AFJ (Women Photojournalists Association) in partnership with Le Figaro Magazine. She is represented by Echo Photo Agency and Gallery Pinter & Milch.

Documentary photographer, Maggie Steber has worked in 63 countries. Her ventures address questions surrounding human experience. Her works can be found in the United States Library of Congress and in numerous private collections, including exhibitions overseas. She is the recipient of prestigious awards such as the Leica Medal of Excellence, World Press Photo and the Olivier Rebbot Award from the Overseas Press Club.

A mischievous spy with life as her target, Annik Mata Hari de Carufel offers her vision of current events as a photojournalist, namely the newspaper Le Devoir. Fuel for reaction, her passion is to capture the many facets of humanity through the eye of her lens.

FAITES-NOUS VOIR LE MONDE SHOW US THE WORLD Une quinzaine de pays participent chaque année au concours international « Faites-nous Voir le Monde » dont l’objectif est d’encourager la production d’images de haute qualité et d’offrir un regard neuf sur notre planète. L’exposition met en valeur les 35 images les plus captivantes. À travers des paysages à couper le souffle, des portraits fascinants et une faune grandiose, le concours FVM révèle la diversité de notre planète. L’exposition prend son départ à Saguenay et voyage jusqu’aux confins de l’Inde pour porter cette beauté aux regards d’un public bigarré, à l’image de cette mosaïque inspirante de photographies. FVM présente la gagnante du volet étudiant, la jeune photographe Arielle Elkrief.

About fifteen countries participate each year in the international competition “Show us the World” whose objective is to encourage the production of high quality images and provide a new perspective on our planet. The exhibition highlights the thirty-five most captivating images. Through fascinating landscapes, fascinating portraits and grand wildlife, FVM contest reveals the diversity of our planet. The exhibition takes its starting point in Saguenay and travels to the confines of India to bring this beauty to the eyes of a diverse public, in the image of this inspiring mosaic of photographs. FVM presents the winner of the student section, the young photographer Arielle Elkrief.

It was the collective suicide of Guyana. One photographer was on-site. A scoop in journalism that marked the beginning of Cosmos. During this time, Travolta was a hit. The Iranian Revolution brought the Islamists to power. Solidarity in Poland began to undermine the Soviet Empire. The young Cosmos photo was on many fronts and with one sole motto: Do not step on the tœs of colleagues while searching for news, but focus on the authors and cover events in depth.

Le 12 janvier 2010, il se trouvait en Haïti pour un reportage, quand la terre a tremblé. Les photos qu’il a prises ce soir-là ont fait le tour du monde, dont la couverture du magazine américain Time. Il a remporté le prix AntoineDesilets à quatre reprises, en plus du Concours canadien de journalisme en 2011.

Photographer for La Presse since 2002, Ivanoh Demers has executed numerous photojournalism reports from around the world. January 12, 2010, he found himself in Haiti for a report when the ground beneath him started to tremble. The photos that he took that very night, have circled the globe on the cover of the American magazine, Time. He won the AntoineDesilets Award on four separate occasions, in addition to the Canadian Journalism Contest in 2011.

Renaud Philippe was raised and lives in Québec. Self-educated, Renaud has worked in India, in Haiti, Nepal, Kenya, Tunisia, in Canada, always independently under the theme of wandering, sympathetic to the angst of those who had to leave everything behind, victims of war or natural disasters.

ÉDOUARD PLANTE-FRÉCHETTE SYRIE : LA VIE EN SUSPENS SYRIA: LIFE ON HOLD Édouard Plante-Fréchette est photojournaliste pour La Presse. Son projet de longue haleine sur le quotidien de deux Inuits vivant à Montréal a notamment fait l’objet d’expositions et de publications. Son plus récent reportage pour le compte de La Presse lui a offert l’opportunité de couvrir la guerre civile syrienne à deux reprises.

Édouard Plante-Fréchette is a photojournalist for La Presse. His longterm project surrounding the daily lives of two Inuit living in Montréal have notably been the highlight of his exhibitions and publications. His most recent report in La Presse, provided an opportunity to cover the civil war in Syria on two separate occasions.

The Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec and its photo committee are proud to present Quebec Press Photos 2013, an exhibition that presents the 40 photography finalists of the Prix Antoine-Desilets, the award for the best press photos of the year in Quebec. The Prix Antoine-Desilets was launched in 2005 in recognition of top-quality Quebec photography production and the contribution of press photographers to public information. The photos are placed into five categories: sports, news, daily life, photo stories, and portraits. All photos were either published or ordered by a press firm. The award carries the name of the individual, Antoine Desilets, who is recognized as the “father” of Quebec press photography, and who was a photographer for La Presse from the 1960s to the 1980s. The award is at the same time a tribute that’s made to him.

L’HOMME ET L’ENVIRONNEMENT MAN AND THE ENVIRONMENT Groupe Photo Média International et la Maison du développement durable ont proposé un concours de reportage photographique dans le cadre de Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay. Les participants devaient faire parvenir une série de 15 photographies sur le thème « l’Homme et l’Environnement ». Un thème qui propose une réflexion sur la façon dont l’Homme, au sens large du mot, peut être influencé dans ses activités, par son environnement, c’est-à-dire par l’ensemble des conditions naturelles et culturelles qui constituent le cadre de sa vie et qui sont susceptibles d’agir sur lui. Each participant must submit a series of 15 photos on the theme of “Man and the Environment”. This theme presents comment on the way Man, as a species, can be influenced by his immediate surroundings, which include the whole of his cultural and natural environment; the aim is to explore how these conditions can affect a person’s life, on all levels. The winner of the 2013 edition of “Man and the Environment” is Claudio Cambon.
