The Highs & Lows of 2018 2018 has been a year of hard work, some good times and some not so good times for us at Guysers Gaystay. During the tourism low season (June/July), we spend this time doing any renovations or maintenance around the B&B while we have the fewest guests. This year we decided to renovate our own bedroom and office as well as putting up new curtains in the guest rooms.
Gaystay Rotorua
In our office we painted the walls, put down new carpet and underlay and bought ourselves a new desk and drawers. This room also doubles as a massage room so now it’s warm and visually pleasing with the Balinese accents and palm tree. We took a much-needed holiday during the month of July, and took off to sunny and warm (or should we say hot) Spain and Portugal. When we were in Madrid we purchased these lovely Morrocan-looking teardrop lights, which we have installed next to our spa pool.

Continued... It just happened to be Madrid Pride Week when we were there, so the whole city was full of rainbow flags and gay festivities. It was a really great sight to see, and it’s no wonder Madrid has been called “The most gay-friendly city in the world”.
If you enjoy naturism, no trip to Spain and Portugal would be complete without visiting some of the popular nudist beaches. We went to Portugal’s largest nude beach called Costa da Caparica, otherwise known as Beach 19. The beach is numbered in sections from 1-19 with a small train that runs parallel to the beach. The train will stop at any part of the beach that best fits your ‘preference’, ie, textiled, family, straight, gay and nudist. Beach 19 being the gay nudist section.
In Sitges we spent a day at the worlds very first official gay nudist beach, Desenrocada, established in the 1930’s and still going strong. There is even a café that services this beach.

Sitges has a wonderful gay vibe. Its a place were gay tourists and locals are the majority, not the minority. You can be as openly gay as you like here, kiss and hold hands in the street where no one bats an eyelid, and where you can sport your sexiest branded shorts, uplifting underwear, T-shirts and singlets to gain as much attention as you like.
After all this fun, you are probably wondering what the ‘low’ part of the year has been. Well, just before we went on holiday, Mike was diagnosed with a large tumour on his right kidney. A few weeks after we returned to New Zealand Mike was booked in with the hospital to have this kidney completely removed.
The gay bars here have outdoor seating that all faces the footpath, making the people walking by the centre of attention – it’s like one big fashion show of eye candy. It’s fabulous!
The operation went very well using the latest keyhole surgery technique. Just hours after the surgery Mike was eating the dreadful hospital food, be it in a bit of pain.

The Ultimate Canopy Tour is higher, longer and more spectacular than the award winning Original Canopy Tour. This journey takes you deeper into untouched New Zealand forest – this experience will show you the New Zealand you came to see. Not for the faint of heart, this experience is a step up in adventure level and incorporates some incredible new features that will blow you away. Your amazing kiwi guides will lead your small group on a personal and unforgettable adventure. They are highly trained to keep you safe, make you smile, teach you amazing things and create memories that last you a lifetime. Recently, Mike and I had the opportunity to go and experience the new Ultimate Canopy Tour for ourselves. We had done the Original Canopy Tour a couple of years ago, so we were not quite sure how a new set of ziplines could be any different. Don’t get me wrong, the Original Canopy Tour is still wonderful, but the Ultimate is really something quite amazing, and worth paying the extra for! The Ultimate Canopy Tour has doubled the total length of ziplines combined to a total of 1200 metres. There are incredible feats of engineering like steel spiral staircases or steps to get you onto the platforms high up in the trees and there is a mind-blowing semi-circular suspended cliff-face walkway with a huge drop below you (pictured above and right).

There is also a 50 metre swing bridge and a controlled cable decent. If you are nervous with heights, the guides at Canopy Tours do a marvellous job, not only with the safety aspect, but also assisting and reassuring people (like myself ), to overcome any fears or nerves and accomplish the course, and to enjoy it. Once you learn to trust the equipment and you feel 100% safe you can then have time to look around at the stunning native bush scenery that surrounds you. Rotorua Canopy Tours is the only place in New Zealand where you can zipline through a lost world and come face to face with native birds, towering trees and native flora untouched for centuries. Each tour has a limit of 10 people led by amazing authentic Kiwi guides. Remember of course that Canopy Tours is also a forest restoration project where they have transformed 280 hectares of forest into a flourishing native eco-system. q

The Mitai Maori Village experience If you only have a few days in Rotorua and would like to learn a bit more about traditional Maori life, arts, crafts, song, dance, customs and traditions, as well as a ground-cooked hangi dinner, be sure to book the Mitai Maori Village evening experience. If you stay with us at Guysers Gaystay, we can do the booking for you and have a mini van come and pick you up from our B&B to take you to Mitai and bring you back. When you arrive you will be greeted by several Maori ladies wearing traditional-looking cloaks (I say “traditional-looking” because they are a synthetic feather-look fabric, not real feathers, but the overall look of costume is as our early Maori ancestors would have dressed). The ladies will direct you into the restaurant where you will be assigned a table.
A few nibbles will come around for you to try and you are welcome to go up to the bar to purchase a drink. The MC for the evening will begin a rather interesting chat about Maori history and life, as well as adding very humorous talks and jokes about where people are from in the audience and cleverly saying sentences in dozens of difference languages. After this, people are lead off in groups down to see the spectacular sight of the Waka (canoe) being paddled up the river by 7 warriors.
The Waka (canoe) comes up the river.

The river they paddle up comes from the sacred Fairy Spring that releases 24 million litres of pure spring water every day. Visitors are then lead up to the revealing of the hangi food which has been cooking in a pit for around 4 hours. The food cooked in this pit includes chicken, lamb, white potato, sweet potato and a special stuffing mixture which adds flavour to the hangi meal. This food then heads to the kitchen where it is prepared ready for dinner service. Once you have taken your photos of the hangi you are then lead into the semioutdoor stage for the cultural show. The outdoor stage has recreated traditional Maori huts and food stores and has a natural bush setting, complete with burning log fires to keep the scantily-dressed performers warm (especially on cooler nights).

Continued... The cultural performance at Mitai is real, raw and earthy. It is a fascinating performance full of emotion and power. The performers take you back in time when ancient Maori customs and traditions were part of everyday life. Through songs and dances plus tales and legends told, you will learn a great deal about the Maori’s fascinating past. You will witness a dazzling display of the Poi (its like a ball on a string that the Maori women spin in amazing formations and movements). You will also see various stick games the early Maori would use to gain much-needed hand and eye coordination skills preparing themselves for battles. Explanations of Maori facial and body tattoos are given and some real examples are shown (sometimes the buttocks!).

After the show has finished, you are then lead back to the restaurant where you can help yourself to the buffet hangi feast. You can begin your meal by trying the seafood chowder and freshly baked garlic bread. There is a hot brown gravy and mint sauce you can pour over your meat and potatoes - delish!

Lake Rotokakahi - Green Lake
From this lookout off Tarawera Road you can get this view of bo th lakes.
Lake Rotokakahi or Green Lake, is one of four small lakes lying between Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand’s North Island. The others are Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), Lake Okareka, and Lake Okataina. All lie within the Okataina caldera, along its western edge. Named for its abundance of kakahi (freshwater mussels),it flows to Lake Tarawera via the Te Wairoa waterfalls. From the air the lake looks emerald green due to its shallow, sandy bottom. The lake is 1302 feet above sea level and 69 feet below the level of the neighbouring Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake). Rotokakahi remains under the authority of Te Arawa iwi, and remains largely undisturbed as it is considered to be tapu (sacred).

Lake Tkitapu - Blue Lake
Lake Tikitapu or Blue Lake, is the smallest of the four lakes lying between Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera. Along with the others, Lake Tikitapu lies within a volcanic caldera formed within the last 300,000 years. The blue colour of the lake can be attributed to rhyolite and pumice on the lake bed. The lake has no visible outlet; however, subsurface flow drains towards the Green Lake and onto Lake Tarawera. In summer, the lake is used for recreational purposes, with many sports events being held such as water skiing and triathlons. Like many of the lakes in the Rotorua district, it is also used for trout fishing. The Blue Lake is one of the lakes visited by the amphibious vehicle Duck Tours from Rotorua. q

My take
on what makes
Rotorua great By Tamati Coffey, Owner of Ponsonby Rd Bar and Labour Party MP for Waiariki
Rotorua is like a great big melting pot. Big enough to take the world and all it’s got. Famous words. Well, kind of! I will always fly the flag for our little slice of paradise. I have to. On one hand, I am an award winning* bar owner of Ponsonby Rd Lounge Bar which sits right in the heart of Eat Streat – the eating and drinking precinct in Rotorua, New Zealand. On the other hand, I am the local elected Member of Parliament for the region. I love this place, I love it’s people, I love our culture. It’s where I belong. I always hope that our visitors to Rotorua get to experience what makes our place so special.

A few reasons why Rotorua is a great place to visit Natural Wonders Rotorua is the Geothermal Capital of New Zealand and is the only place in New Zealand that has shooting geysers. Our geothermal parks are full of incredible colours from bright yellow, lime green, cyan blue, oranges and reds. And yes, we have mud pools too! Some geothermal activity can be seen for free around our city, like Kuirau Park, Sulphur Bay, the Wai-O-Tapu Mud Pool or activity around Ohinemutu.
Stable weather conditions Generally speaking, Rotorua experiences fairly stable weather conditions. We rarely experience high winds (like some cities in New Zealand). Rotorua and the surrounding district enjoy a consistent temperate climate with daytime temperatures in the mid-to-high twenties in summer and low-to-mid teens in winter (degrees C). It does not snow in Rotorua either, but ski fields are just 2 hours drive away at Ruapehu (winter time).
Ease of parking Compared to the bigger cities like Auckland or Wellington, Rotorua has plenty of FREE, P30, P60 and P120 car parks around its CBD. Sure we have some coin operated meters in certain areas, but usually free parking is just around the corner. Spend less time driving around in circles looking for a park or going into expensive car park buildings – finding a car park in Rotorua is never too difficult.

Cheaper petrol Did you know Rotorua is one of the cheapest places in New Zealand to buy petrol? Unlike Auckland with it’s additional fuel tax added to the already Nationally taxed fuel price, Rotorua somehow manages up to 30 cents cheaper fuel per litre than other cities and towns in New Zealand. We are fortunate to have heavy competition between Gull and Mobil which helps to keep prices lower.
Hot mineral waters Rotorua is known as The Spa Capital of the South Pacific. This is due to Rotorua having several thermal pool complexes, like the Polynesian Spa, Waikete Valley Hot Pools and Hells Gate Mud Spa. As well as these commercial hot pools, Rotorua has several natural places you can enjoy our thermal waters for free.
Great restaurants Rotorua has no shortage of great restaurants to suit all budgets and tastes. Rotorua, being a tourist town, caters for all nationalities, so we have plenty of ethnic restaurants as well as casual European and fine dining establishments.
Location, Location, Location Rotorua is geographically positioned very well to use as a base for day trips to explore other nearby regions. We are just 1 hour to Tauranga, 1 hour to Taupo, 1 hour to Hobbition (Matamata) or 1.25 hours to Hamilton. q

PAST
Event
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Harry & Meghan) spent the final part of their New Zealand tour in Rotorua on the 31st October. The sun was shining and the crowds were lined up with excitement waiting for their main public appearance at the Government Gardens. Their memorable day in Rotorua began with a pōwhiri (welcome) onto the marae at Ohinemutu involving a haka of up to 1000 children, men and women. They were then treated to a traditional hāngi lunch.
We were there, of course, poised with our cameras where we managed to get within metres of them. We called out "Harry, would you like to come for a beer and a spa at Guysers after?", but sadly he declined (in our dreams!).
Harry and Meghan were then taken over to the National Kiwi Hatchery at Rainbow Springs to learn about the kiwi breeding programme there and to name a couple of new Kiwi chicks.
They then got into the Royal car (a silver BMW) and were escorted by dozens of Police on motorbikes over to the Redwood Forest where they did a portion of the Redwood’s Treewalk and spent some time walking around the forest on the ground as well. Rotorua really put on the best day of their tour and as they left Harry said “Bye guys, enjoy this heaven.” q
At 3:30pm was their main public appearance walking, chatting and shaking hands with the thousands of people who lined Queens Drive at the Government Gardens.

Rotorua’s Cuisine Historic pubs Rotorua
On Rotorua’s Tutanekai Street are two Historic Pubs. One building was the old Police Station from 1940, the other a Grocer and Merchants store in the early 1900’s. Today, both of these historic buildings are now two of Rotorua’s most popular Pub/Restaurants. The building became the Pig & Whistle in 1993 and is the longest running Pub in Rotorua.
The building that is now the Pig & Whistle was built in 1940 and served as Rotorua’s Police station until 1969. As the Station also had holding cells the building was constructed with exterior walls 18 inches thick. Over 1000 cubic yards of concrete and 37 tons of reinforcing steel were used in the building, which was then covered with a veneer consisting of many thousands of bricks. No escaping from here!
The menu has a full selection of salads, burgers & Pub Classics. Dishes include favourites like Seafood Chowder, Fresh NZ Fish and Chips, Chicken Satay Burger, Lamb Burger, Prawn & Calamari Salad, Pork Spare Ribs, Scotch Fillet Steak & Curly Fries. Enjoy your meals in the comfortable atmosphere inside or venture into the garden bar to enjoy the great covered outdoor setting and fireplace.

(Grocers/Merchants); Hitchen & Johnstone a draper/wool/needlework shop; Clarken Ltd chandlers; A.T. Coates Bookseller to 1943; McLeods Bookstore 1943, Heidi’s Cafe and Patisserie, and of course Hennessey’s Irish Bar which first opened in 2002 with a Backpackers that was upstairs.
The menu features a range of hearty pub favourites and is fondly known for serving Rotorua’s favourite Pub food, including traditional fare like mussels, lamb shanks and bangers & mash, steaks and stews, supported by burgers, sandwiches and fresh salads and many more dishes in their extensive menu. Hennessy’s has received the prestigious BEER MASTERS AWARD every year they have been operating; an award that recognises excellence in presentation of their tap beers and service. q
Today, Hennessy’s Irish Bar is one of New Zealand’s favourite Irish bars, right in the heart of Rotorua City centre. News Only in Rotorua! A video of a naked man 'taking a shower' while hugging his car naked at a Caltex car wash in Rotorua has gone viral on social media. The video was uploaded on Facebook by one . The video of the rather hilarious incident was recorded by after she and her husband spotted the butt-naked man clinging on to the car at the carwash, while they were driving past on the road. The almost 35-second long video, which has been shot from inside Harris’ car, shows the naked man yelling and screaming as the rotating brushes scrub his body and whip his arse (ouch!). Harris uploaded the video on her Facebook account after which the video went crazy viral on social media, gaining thousands of hits ever since the Daily Mail reported it. In the video, can be heard saying, ”What are you up to bro, you on crack?,” as she and her husband slowly drive past the car wash. She captioned the video on her Facebook post as, “Don’t do drugs, kids. Only in Rotorua.” Speculation is that the unknown man was performing a ‘dare’.
