Winter - A time to get stuck in!

uysers ROTO R

UA

After a very good summer season, winter is now upon us all over New Zealand. At Guysers we spend this time to make further improvements to our bed & breakfast. They say that kitchens and bathrooms are the most expensive things to upgrade in any home. At Guysers we’ve be itching to get our 2 guest bathrooms renovated to make them more modern and to have new carpet installed throughout the whole house, so during the month of May we got stuck in with this big project (albeit with a sore pocket!). First we had to strip off all the old wallpaper from both bathrooms:

guysers.co.nz

Then we had to rip up the dated 1970’s carpet that the previous owners stupidly put down in the bathrooms and throughout the house. New carpet was installed in the lounge, dining area, hallway and bedrooms. We then had a plumber come in and remove one vanity and take out 2 toilets so we could work on the wall surfaces behind and so the new hard flooring could go underneath:

Then we had the flooring people come in who put a levelling compound onto the concrete to get it nice and smooth ready for the new vinyl planking to be glued to it:

We purchased this lovely wallpaper that’s got a very Balinese-style pattern of leaves and trees and little Bali hut graphics. This fits perfectly with the Bali theme we have:

We chose a light grey wood-effect vinyl plank which keeps the bathrooms nice and bright:

Then we had the plumber install a new vanity unit with new tap and glass splashback:

We placed glass mosaic tiles behind the toilet and got that grouted before the plumber returned to put the toilets back into position. New chrome loo tap finished it nicely:

New features include wall-mounted heaters and hair dryers and new LED ceiling lights:

Rotorua’s Polynesian Spa is a World Top 10 Spa that overlooks Lake Rotorua’s Sulphur Bay. On a cool afternoon in June, we decided to have a little bit of luxury at the Deluxe Lake Spa. We’ve bathed at the Adult Pools (known now as the Pavilion Pools) many times, mainly due to the fact locals can get a monthly pass to use those pools, but we were keen to experience the fancier deluxe side just to see what the main differences are. After getting our tickets we then came into a rather plush lounge area with comfortable arm chairs overlooking the pools and lake. You can use this lounge before or after your swim if you so wish. We then proceeded to the change rooms, which unlike the standard Pavilion Pools, had complimentary lockers and towels.

The showers are communal style with huge monsoon shower roses as well as shampoo and fancy body lotion dispensers. When we walked though to the pools the first thing we noticed was it was a lot quieter with less people than over at the Pavilion Pools side. If you’re after a more relaxing bathing experience without the coach loads of people it’s worth spending the extra just for that reason alone.

Hot monsoon showers with shampoo and body lotion dispensers.

The Deluxe Lake Spa has 2 covered roof areas with rows of resort-like recliner chairs you can lay to cool down between dips.

Lake views

Continued... The Polynesian Spa’s geothermal mineral waters are sourced from two natural springs. The slightly acidic Priest Spring waters relieve aches and pains while the alkaline waters of the Rachel Spring nourish skin. Both the Pavilion Pools and the Deluxe Lake Spa has both these waters. The main difference between the two bathing areas comes down to the landscaping.

The Deluxe Lake Spa has 4 organic, freeformshaped pools surrounded by rocks and native plants and 1 modern hard-edged pool. All these pools have views of the lake and sit under the dappled light of Pohutukawa trees. One of the pools (pictured right) has an arching rock grotto with intimate seating nooks. If you get too hot there is an icy cold plunge pool for hot/cold hydrotherapy (if you are game enough to do this?). If you decide to do any Spa Therapy treatment, you automatically get free entry to the Deluxe Lake Spa. If staying at Guysers we have 10% discount vouchers for any Signature Range treatments, so do enquire with us before booking online yourself. q CMYK

If you love plants, gardens and landscaping you’ll thoroughly enjoy a day out from Rotorua to visit the wonderful and award-winning Hamilton Gardens. Even in winter, as long as you have a fine day you will love it here! Hamilton Gardens is a public garden park in the south of Hamilton owned and managed by Hamilton City Council. The 54-hectare park is based on the banks of the Waikato River. It is the Waikato Region’s most popular visitor attraction, attracting more than 1 million people a year. Hamilton Gardens is described as a botanical garden, but does not technically qualify as a botanical garden. Instead, the site features 21 gardens representing the art, beliefs, lifestyles and traditions of different civilisations or historical garden styles. These gardens are grouped into the Paradise, Productive, Fantasy, Cultivar and Landscape garden collections, and there is space for gardens which are still in development. The first development of the gardens began in the early 1960s at what was then the city's waste disposal site. The first substantial development, the Rogers Rose Garden, was opened in 1971 in an attempt to block highway development over the site. Since 1982 many newly developed areas have been opened to the public. Hamilton Gardens won the Garden of the Year award at the International Garden Tourism Awards in Metz, France in 2014, after being selected by a global jury of garden experts. Lonely Planet encourages visitors to the gardens to see the “extravagant themed enclosed gardens” with “colonnades, pagodas and a mini Taj Mahal”. Blogger David Farrer described Hamilton Gardens as a “hidden treasure” and a “great place to spend half a day”.

The English Flower Garden – an example of seasonal plant colours. The garden has walls and hedges creating 'outdoor rooms', seats and fountains. The Italian Renaissance Garden – based on the Renaissance gardens of the 15th century or 16th century. The garden includes a Romulus and Remus statue at the entrance. Te Parapara Māori Garden – based on a traditional homeland of Ngāti Wairere.

The Indian Char Bagh Garden – symbolic of the four-quartered Islamic gardens built by the Mughal aristocracy. The garden consists of geometric flower beds in a range of colours, below a chalk coloured Indian pavilion. The Rogers Rose Garden – includes rose collections from different periods in the history and development of modern roses, from species to new hybrids. The Tropical Garden – uses exotic plants including bromeliads, orchids and palms to create a dense, jungle-like atmosphere. The Concept Garden – part of the newer ‘Fantasy Collection of gardens. PAST

Event Ponsonby Rd Bar’s 4th Anniversary party 11th of May 2019 was Ponsonby Rd Bar’s 4th Anniversary bash, celebrating Tamati Coffey and partner Tim Smith’s 4th year in business running Rotorua’s most gay-friendly nightspot. The theme of the night was ‘take it to the old skool’ so people were encouraged to dress up in their best 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s outfits (promoted on Facebook). All the bar staff had wonderful Retro costumes and wigs on and they were serving up some delicious nibbles lovingly prepared from their new restaurant on Eat Street, Our Place.

One of Auckland’s most popular drag queen’s, Miss Ribena, came down for the event to MC and provide some outrageous life, laughs and colour to the party. Rotorua singer Krissey Knap sang some catchy tunes from 5pm and got many people up on their feet dancing.

4 circus lions on the loose and 1 dead poodle January 30, 1986 is a day that has haunted Rotorua-born Kent Briggs (pictured above) for 30 years. Heading to the Whirling Brothers circus with his older brother Gareth, Kent had no idea he was about to witness an incredible and life-altering event.

the door, and the door just popped open.”

“We’d heard on the radio that morning that one of the performing poodles named Lucy was missing, presumed stolen.” The first act he and his brother saw were the lions, and they were acting oddly, he says.

“My most exciting memory of the day was the alpha lion leaping through the side of the tent, and people who were out on the Village Green were sent scattering because it came down right on top of them.”

“They were back-chatting the tamer quite a bit. They were quite aggressive.”

The reason for the lions’ aggressive behaviour soon became clear.

“In the last part of the act they ran around the cage in a circle and started fighting, they hit

cascade of events that led to the lions escaping the circus tent for several hours.

Speculation at the time was that someone had put Lucy the poodle into the lions cage and the lions had mauled her to death. The lions, hyper after the kill, went straight into the circus performance. This was the beginning of a

One lion was almost immediately recaptured but the remaining three spilled out into the crowded Rotorua lakefront. Kent and his brother sprinted the whole way home without looking back. “I kept waiting for lions to jump out from behind every parked car. It was a terrifying thing, something I'll never forget.” Police sergeant Donaldson was called to respond to the escaped lions from Whirling Brothers circus and to protect dozens of people at risk of being mauled (or worse) on the city’s lakefront. “There were about 20 police and the circus workers involved running around chasing the lions. There’s nothing in the police handbook for it. And you know, they only had rifles that were 22s - better suited for shooting rabbits.“ One of the lions ran over to the old hospital building and climbed under the foundations of the building through an open trap door.

amateur investigation to find the identity of the perpetrator. Official reports of the time suggested street kids were to blame, but as Kent investigates further, new theories emerge.

Police were very critical of the number of spectators, including parents with young children who stood around idly enjoying the spectacle as the lions roamed the reserve. Two young cyclists proved a particular nuisance to the police as they chased one of the lions up Memorial Drive.

Talking to former circus performers, journalists and police, Kent sets out on a journey to crack open this unsolved case and answer the question, who killed Lucy the poodle?

Efforts by circus staff, armed police, veterinary surgeons and members of Rotorua’s other emergency services were hindered by the crowds who thronged the area as if in an African safari park. Eventually all the lions were recaptured without shooting them.

Who killed Lucy the poodle?. So who threw Lucy in with the lions? It’s a question that has consumed Kent since the day he witnessed the escape in 1986. Now Kent is digging deeper into this unbelievable true story, launching his own

guysers.co.nz

Mentored by former Police Ten 7 favourite Detective Sergeant Graham Bell, Kent uncovers a spiralling list of suspects and a compelling story that proves truth really is stranger than fiction. The documentary concluded that it is highly probable that an inquisitive poodle could easily be snatched up by the paws of a lion through the feeding flap that was found to be left open. Who killed Lucy the poodle is a bizarre, funny, distinctly Kiwi tale and it’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. Butt Lube 101 What you need to know about lubes for your ass Here is an informative article about lubes for your butt we’ve shared from the NZAF website https://endinghiv.org.nz/sex/butt-lube-101

Oil based Not for condom use

Flavoured lubes are for oral sex only

Tingling Not for anal use

When it comes to putting stuff in your butt, it’s really important to use lube. That’s easy enough to say, but how do you know what sort of lube to use when there are so many different kinds out there? Well, when it comes to ‘fun in your bum’ it’s actually quite simple: you want the plainest lube you can find. The lining of your rectum is super pro at absorbing stuff – that’s the job it’s there to do, which is why you don’t want unnecessary chemicals in your butt. Flavoured lubes are out, as are warming lubes, tingling lubes and desensitising lubes. It is really important to avoid desensitising or relaxing anal lubes, especially if you’re a newbie, because if you can’t feel what’s going on in your ass then you can’t properly monitor if you might be getting hurt or not. So your best options are plain water-based lube, plain siliconebased lube or a hybrid lube. Water-based lube is less expensive and more commonly available, but you will end up needing to use a bit more because it does eventually get absorbed by your body. Siliconebased lube, on the other hand, does not get absorbed by your body, so you won’t need to use as much or reapply

guysers.co.nz

it as often, though it does usually cost more. Different people will hold a preference for either water or siliconebased lubes, and that’s entirely down to personal choice. Now knowing that plain water or silicone-based lubes are what you want to go for, here’s a checklist of what else you’ll need to know: Both silicone and water-based lubes (& hybrid lubes) are perfectly fine to use with condoms. Oil-based lubes deteriorate the quality of condoms so oils and petroleum jellies like Vaseline are out. Don’t combine silicone lube with silicone sex toys, because the two will react and your toys will start to melt away. You can buy lube at supermarkets, chemists, adult shops and online. q At Guysers we sell the award winning, American made Spunk Lube Hybrid which contains the perfect blend of both water and silicone. And it’s white and creamy so it looks and feels just like cum! See advert on the last page.

The health benefits of sleeping

commando In our very first edition of the Guysers Gazette we did a brief article about the benefits of sleeping naked. The following points for sleeping naked, however, comes from scientific research conducted in a 2014 study* by the Tohoku Fukushi University in Miyagi, Japan. Everyone knows that getting enough sleep is a critical to good health. But there’s so much more to the equation than the amount of shuteye you get. According to scientific research*, how you sleep is equally important. That’s why many experts suggest that men should sleep nude. Here are some benefits:

May help keep weight off This one may sound like a stretch but it’s really not. Here’s why: when you sleep in your birthday suite, you’re helping your body keep cortisol levels in balance. Cortisol, a biochemical hormone, is partially responsible for sending messages to the brain to let you know you’re hungry. When cortisol is out of whack, it leads to “stress eating”. Over the course of time, this causes weight gain.

30

Guysers Gazette

You’ll increase your load Believe it or not, sleeping nude may help to increase the amount of semen you produce. Studies suggests that when you sleep naked, you’re helping your scrotum to maintain the perfect temperature of 35.5° – 36.5° Celsius; the optimal environment for seminal production as part of the gonad system.

You’ll sleep a lot better Without the restriction of circulation zapping clothing, sleeping nude allows you to feel more comfortable and relaxed. This helps to encourage the production of dopamine, a required brain chemical that has been scientifically proven as a necessary ingredient to more meaningful, deeper sleep.

Issue 16 • 2019

Helps fight depression One of the major reasons you should be sleeping naked relates directly to your mood. We know from research that getting a good night’s sleep helps to keep a person’s mood in check. If you’re all bunched up because of underwear or pyjamas, you may experience hypersomnia; a clinical condition that makes you feel tired during the day. It’s also directly related to the onset of depression.

Healthier skin Everyone knows that when you don’t get enough sleep, you end up looking tired and haggard. Over the course of time, bags begin to form under the eyes and dark circles set in. But sleeping nude, in addition to getting quality sleep, helps your skin stay healthy. That’s because commando style sleep allows your dermis to literally air itself out, purging itself of toxins and wrinkle-causing chemicals.

Younger looking skin Sleeping without anything on also helps you to look younger. It turns out that quality sleep, which is encouraged by sleeping naked, increases melatonin. You may wonder what that word means? Melatonin is a hormone that is partially responsible for your sleep/wake cycle, also referred to as circadian rhythm. Combined with other brain chemicals that are largely produced during sleep, melatonin helps your skin stay young, soft and supple. When you go to bed with clothes on, you literally encourage your entire body to age.

Makes your manhood happier For men, sleeping in the buff allows your entire sex organ system to remain at a balanced

guysers.co.nz

temperature. In turn, this helps to encourage a better functioning pecker – and shooter! If it’s been awhile since you’ve experienced nocturnal penile tumescence (aka morning wood), you should toss off your skivvies and enjoy the fabulous sensation of cool sheets.

Helps introverts become extroverted If you are the type of man who struggles with socialising, try sleeping naked. That’s because when you wear clothing to sleep, like underwear, it is thought to paradoxically restrict your personality. By jumping into the sack in just your birthday suite, you become less inhibited during your waking hours.

Less sexually inhibited If you’re the type that insists on wearing pyjamas to bed or keeping on a pair of boxers, there’s a fairly good chance you’re sexually inhibited. At least that’s what research tells us. So if you’ve been wanting to change this up; like try new positions or get a little wild, why not sleep commando as a “first step”? Over the course of time, this can lead to greater versatility and enhanced sexual happiness!

Intimacy is more likely Men who sleep naked may find that intimacy with a partner increases. That’s because skin on skin contact with your mate skyrockets the production of the sex chemical, oxytocin, according to sleep experts. Think about this one if you and your man have been in a “dry spell”!

Sleeping Naked - Final Thoughts Getting a good night’s sleep isn’t just about being alert during waking hours. When you slip into the sheets buff, your entire body benefits. q
