Marian Shrines in Spain & Po Visiting: Madrid, Burgos, Garabandal, Oviedo, Santiago di Compostela, Fatima, Lisbon, Salamanca & Avila Saturday 12 May – Malta/Madrid Meet the tour leader at Malta International airport at 06.30 am for checkin on Ryanair flight FR5383 departing to Madrid at 9:30 am. Upon arrival in Madrid at 12:30 we travel to the city center for a panoramic tour of this vibrant and exciting city. Madrid shows the onlooker multiple faces that history has left behind, such as its medieval origins as an Arab-fortress characterized by its ancient buildings and the smell of the taverns. We’ll drive through the courtesan district of the Hapsburgs characterised by Phillip II and his Renaissance and Baroque style buildings like those in the Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa. We will also have the opportunity to admire the Royal Palace, Cibeles and Neptuno Fountains and the elegant Plaza de Oriente amongst others. Our tour comes to an end when we return to our hotel for check-in and dinner. Sunday 13 May – Madrid/Burgos/Garabandal After breakfast depart Madrid, heading to Burgos in northern Spain. Burgos is home to the wondrous gothic cathedral whose construction spanned from the 13th to the 15th century. Burgos is rich in ancient churches and convents. The three most notable are the cathedral, with its chapel of the Condestables de Castilla, the monastery of Las Huelgas, and the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores. In the afternoon as we drive through the scenic countryside of Cantabria, Spain we will enjoy the lush green mountains before we arrive to the hamlet of Garabandal. Dinner and accommodation for tonight will be at one of the modest hotels in Garabandal. This sparsely populated village consists of approximately 90 humble dwellings. Overnight in Garabandal. Monday 14 May – Garabandal/Oviedo/Santiago De Compostela Breakfast at hotel. Little has changed in this rural town of Garabandal since Jun 18, 1961 when four children had an apparition first of an Angel sent to prepare the children for a visit from the Virgin. From Jul 2, 1961 periodically untilNov 13, 1965, the Blessed Virgin visited them, speaking, guiding and confiding secrets of future events. The children reported a promised future miracle at the grove of pine trees on a bluff overlooking the village of Garabandal. While in Garabandal, we will visit the places associated with the apparition: Homes of the Visionaries, Village Church, Village Cemetery, Miracle of the Visible Host, and The Pines. We, also, have time for private devotions, before we continue to Oviedo. The relic which is held in the Camara Santa in the Cathedral of Oviedo is a piece of cloth measuring approximately 84 x 53 cm. There is no image on this cloth. To the naked eye only stains are visible but more is visible under a microscope. The remarkable thing about this cloth is that both tradition and scientific studies claim that the cloth was used to cover and clean the face of Jesus after the crucifixion. Late in the afternoon, we depart for Santiago de Compostela arriving in the evening in time for dinner. Check in hotel. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela. Tuesday 15 May – Santiago De Compostela/Fatima Breakfast at hotel. Today we will attend Holy Mass at the 1,000 year old Cathedral. Tradition holds that St. James (Santiago in Spanish) the Apos
tle brought the Gospel message to Spain in 40 A.D. Years later James returned to Jerusalem and died a martyr’s death. His remains were eventually brought back to Santiago where today they are reserved in a silver reliquary located in the crypt behind the main altar of the cathedral. The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is one of the finest pieces of architecture in Europe and features magnificent caricatures of apostles, prophets and angels. After time for lunch (extra) we proceed to our next destination – Fatima. After room check-in and dinner at hotel one may join in the Candlelight and Rosary procession.

Wednesday 16 May – Fatima/Lisbon/Fatima After breakfast we head to Lisbon for a full day excursion. Your sightseeing tour of Lisbon takes you on a drive down Liberty Avenue to Rossio, in the very heart of the city. Thursday 17 May - Fatima After breakfast and mass, the leader will organise a visit to the new church and the Apparition Chapel to see the fatal bullet which Mehmet Ali Agca shot on Pope John Paul II way back in 1981. The Polish Pope firmly believed that the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima spared his life, and the bullet that nearly killed him has now been placed in the crown on a famous statue of the Virgin Mary at the Fatima shrine. In the afternoon we go to Valinhos to start the Way of the Cross which will lead us to Aljustrel home of the three shepherds. Visit the parish church where the children were baptized and the cemetery. Back to our hotel for dinner followed by time at leisure. Overnight in Fatima. Friday 18 May - Fatima/Salamanca/Avila After breakfast we leave Fatima and travel to Salamanca in western Spain, nicknamed “La Ciudad Dorada” (The Golden City) because of its Renaissance sandstone buildings and the golden glow of Villamoyor Stone, a type of sandstone coming from a quarry close by. Known both for its monumental sights and great University. Founded in 1218, it is the oldest University in Spain and the fifth oldest in the world. The university is, together with tourism, the economic engine of Salamanca. We visit the famous old Romanesque Cathedral built in the 12th century, whose vault of the apse was frescoed by the early Renaissance painter Nicolas Florentino. In the treasury is the bronze crucifix that was carried into battle before El Cid. The afternoon finds us heading to Avila, birthplace of St. Teresa of Avila known for its medieval city walls constructed of brown granite in 1090 and containing eighty eight towers and nine gateways that are still in excellent repair. We later check-in at a 3*hotel where we shall have dinner followed by time at leisure. Overnight in Avila.
