You will see where King Ludwig II was born, and where a young lad named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave one of his early concerts. day excursion to Salzburg & Chiemsee Lake. During the Christmas Market, the city’s historic Old Town is transformed into a world of bustling merriment, a delightful blend of warmth, snow-covered rooftops and domes, the scents of hot mulled wine, gingerbread and roasted almonds. Choirs sing in front of the cathedral, while the sparkling eyes of the youngsters, sitting atop a horse-drawn carriage as they enjoy a short tour of the Old Town, remind us that Christmas is just around the corner. In the afternoon, we proceed to Lake Chiemsee often referred as the crown jewel of Bavaria. The architecture of the town is extremely picturesque and many of the shops and houses are decorated with elaborate frescoes in the traditional style of Upper Bavaria. Its deep blue water and mountain vistas draw tourists every year and it is incredibly popular with those who like to include recreation on the agenda. On our way back to Munich, we shall undertake a panorama tour along the picturesque Chiemsee Lake District which is a freshwater lake in Bavaria located between Rosenheim, Germany, and Salzburg, Austria. BANSKO SKIING A Modern Ski Resort At the Fraction of the Price PERFECT SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING In less than 20 minutes a fast Gondola cable lift will take you to the modern ski centre, situated on the upper slopes. At the end of the day it is up to you to decide whether to return on the Gondola or ski down the ski road, which marks Bansko as one of the few resorts in the world to offer this option. Bansko boasts having more than 80% of its slopes covered by snow cannons and these slopes are serviced by a number of chair lifts and drag lifts, including a four man chair lift with bubble shields to protect you from harsh weather conditions. Another attractive feature of this modern resort is the easy handsfree access to all lifts by SkiData chip-card ski passes. In addition to the on-piste skiing, Bansko offers extreme winter sports fans a half-pipe for both skiers and snowboarders to show off their latest tricks and a “Fun Park” full of artificial bumps and jumps. For those who do not have your own ski or snowboard gear, you can prebook from a choice of more than 2800 pairs of ski’s and more than 550 snowboards, all of which are the latest models by Atomic and Salomon. Last but by no means least, Bansko offers a unique 16 km uninterrupted run starting from Todorka Peak at the highest point of the ski centre, all the way to the base station of the Gondola lift. The last 7 km of the slope are floodlit and the entire facility is equipped with artificial snow machines to ensure a great skiing experience even in warmer conditions. VIRTUALLY YOURS There are a number of web cameras on the slopes and live images are available on-line at www.banskoski.com, which is the official internet site of the Bansko ski area. BEGINNERS Bansko is a great place for first-time skiers and snowboarders and with the ULEN ski-school having some of the Bulgaria’s best instructors and also the ULEN Rent-a-ski offers the latest in ski and snowboard equipment. This, combined with the wide open and attractive nursery area has made this resort the place where many have become enchanted with the magic of winter sports and why even more keep returning year after year. INTERMEDIATE An array of blue and red runs suitable for intermediate skiers makes this resort a very good choice for both, those committed to becoming experts as well as for those who take up winter sports merely as a recreational activity. The rare occurrence of queues designates Bansko as a smart choice for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. ADVANCED While some red runs and the Alberto Tomba black run should keep most experts busy, Bansko is probably more popular with experts for its great offerings of extreme and powder skiing. The ski and snowboard fun-park area and the half-pipe facility are popular playgrounds for experts to boast their latest tricks. Powder skiing, heli-skiing and paragliding are also available locally and can be booked through the ULEN ski-school office in the resort. If you wish to go off-piste, please make sure that your insurance policy covers off-piste skiing and that you take a guide with you. BIATHLON AND CROSS COUNTRY Bansko, with its biathlon and cross-country trails, is also the choice of Irina Nikulchina and Nina Kadeva, two Bulgarian women that are among the world’s top ten biathlon racers. SKI LIFTS WORKING HOURS & SKI GUIDES The lift system operates from 08:30 till 16:30 each day. Ski guides can be hired for intermediate and advanced skiers for off-piste skiing. Full day guiding service is also available to snowboarders. PUGLIA & SOUTH ITALY

VISITING: SASSI DI MATERA, BITONTO, GROTTE DI CASTELLANA, ALBEROBELLO, SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO (PADRE PIO), GARGANO & BARI

Tuesday, 07 February: Meet the tour leader at 18.15 hours (6.15 p.m.) at the Malta International Airport and check-in for our direct flight departing at 2015 hours (8.15 p.m.) After our arrival in Bari (at 9.35 p.m.), we shall be transferred to our hotel, located a few minutes’ drive from the town of Corato, followed by room allocation and overnight. Puglia, located in the south of Italy – the heel of Italy’s boot, is a true land of contrasts, flavours, colours, culture and great things to discover! Wednesday, 08 February: After breakfast we offer you an optional day excursion, visiting the town of Matera in the region of Basilicata. This provincial capital stands in the heart of a region dissected by deeply eroded gorges. Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the “Sassi di Matera” (meaning “stones of Matera”). The Sassi originate from a prehistoric settlement, and are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. One might think that these were typical Italian hill-towns until you realize that the ‘houses’ are all windowless grottoes with damp walls and earthen floors. But far from being uncivilized, this rock town had intricate hydraulic systems that kept water fresh and cool all year round. Eventually the caves gained facades and roofs but the interiors remained virtually unchanged. Nearly 15,000 people were still living in them until 1952, when the government finally declared them unhealthy and outlawed their use. Before returning to our hotel we shall stop for a short visit in the town of Bitonto. In the center of this old town, one finds the cathedral (c. 1200), perhaps the finest example of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Particularly beautiful are the richly decorated main doorway and the delicately pillared gallery on the south side. Return to our hotel for dinner (optional) & overnight.

Thursday, 09 February: Today we offer an interesting optional day excursion visiting the small town of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Grotte di Castellana. We begin our day by driving to CastellanaGrotte, famous for the network of caves found here. Discovered in 1938, these vast caves were created by underground rivers which filter down through the limestone soil of the Murge Hills. We shall have enough time to visit the numerous caves (entr. extra) with their richly-coloured stalactites and stalagmites. We shall then visit the town of Alberobello, site of the unusual districts of trulli, the characteristic white-washed conical-roofed houses of the area. The story behind Alberobello, once a town of trulli only, is a typically Italian one – its design was originally to fiddle taxes and fool the authorities. Enjoy walking through the centre of the town with trulli interspersed among buildings in a surreal fashion or the most picturesque parts of Alberobello, with over a thousand white pointed top dwellings, clustered together just like a hobbit town! We return to our hotel to prepare for dinner (extra) followed by overnight. Friday, 10 February (Public Holiday In Malta): Today you may wish to join our optional excursion visiting the beautiful national park of the Gargano Peninsula. We shall begin with a stop in San Giovanni Rotondo, the famous Padre Pio pilgrimage shrine. After enough time to visit the town including the famous church dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie we shall then drive through the Foresta Umbra, the only remaining part in Italy of the

ancient oak and beech forest that once covered much of Central Europe. The Gargano is a promontory of stunning beaches, cliffs and forest on the Adriatic coast, admired for its rugged beauty and rough, unspoilt appeal, where a large number of deer, foxes and rabbits still roam freely. We shall return to our hotel in time for dinner (optional) followed by overnight. Saturday, 11 February: After breakfast and room check-out, we offer you a half day excursion visiting Bari, the capital of Apulia. Enjoy some free time in the Old Town area including the famous Basilica di San Nicola. After lunch (extra) we shall return to the hotel followed by our transfer to Bari airport where we check in for our flight departing at 9.25 p.m. and scheduled to arrive in Malta at 10.45 p.m.
