PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
Cats Can Hide Illness Symptoms, So Be Aware
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat Sisko became very una ectionate a few days ago. He hid under the bed or crouched in the corner of the living room and refused to cuddle. en I noticed when he sat in the litter box that he meowed as if he was in distress. I called the veterinarian, and they had me bring him right in. Turns out that Sisko had a urinary tract infection! He’s doing ne now, but I wanted to tell my story so that other readers will know that a sudden behavior change in their cat could be a medical problem. -- Kurt W., Parsippany,
New Jersey
DEAR KURT: ank you for sharing! You did absolutely the right thing: You noticed a sudden change in your cat’s behavior, kept a closer eye on his activities and litter habits, and contacted the vet’s o ce to share your observations and get advice.
Cats are very secretive about their health. It’s an instinctive behavior that helped their ancestors hide from predators. So it is common for owners not to notice when their cat is experiencing pain, such as a sore tooth or an illness like a urinary tract infection.
While the occasional hairball episode isn’t a cause for concern, there are some symptoms that should prompt a call to the vet for an appointment.
-- Your cat acts withdrawn, sits hunched over, refuses to play or be petted.
-- Eating or drinking habits change.
-- Litter box behavior changes: meowing, missing the box or noticeable diarrhea.
-- Grooming problems develop, or they have clumpy fur or irritated skin.
-- Physical symptoms: eye or ear discharge, strange breathing, unusual vomiting, lethargy or drooling.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD
Emphasize time management. Hectic schedules can quickly derail resolutions. Many people want to eat healthier and exercise more but find their time is stretched pretty thin, which can make it difficult to get to the gym or prepare healthy meals at home. Findingwaystomanagetimemore effectively can make it easier to stay committed to New Year’s resolutions. Right down your daily schedule and look for ways to free up time. If you routinely take an hour for lunch each day, use that time to exercise and eat at your desk when you return from your walk, workout or jog. Try to wake up 30 to 60 minutes earlier each morning to exercise, and make use of time before bed by preparing a healthy lunch for the following day.

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN BUYING FROM A PRIVATE SELLER
Confirm the number of owners. There’s no magic number of owners a vehicle can have before it’s considered too risky to buy, but the more owners a car has had, the less likely buyers will learn its full history. In addition, if sellers were not the first owners, they won’t know how the car was treated or driven prior to them buying it. That’s another potential red flag to consider before buying a car that has had more than one owner.
STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR
Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale.
Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot.
Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt.
Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person.
Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

THE BEST OF GENEROSITY, LOVE, AND CARE AT AURORA HOUSE
BY LORI BRUTON
There is a time and season for everything. In 2010, it was time for Aurora House to be born. e Westside needed this comfort care home. eir mission began with raising money and gathering a team of volunteers. Ogden Presbyterian Church donated the land at 2495 South Union Street, and the house was built with donated funds and services.
Aurora House o ers high-quality comfort care with a personal touch. Residents and their visitors are surrounded by warmth, acceptance, and understanding in this two-bed homelike setting. It’s about you and your loved one being together and nding respite.
Since residents cannot go to their homes, sta do their best to make Aurora House feel like home. Aurora House provides the physical and emotional space for each resident to complete their earthly assignment and for families to carry on their loved one’s legacy. ere are no visitor restrictions. Family and friends are even welcome to stay overnight in the house if they want to.
All comfort care homes maintain the motto, “Neighbors taking care of neighbors.” e sta asks themselves, “How would I care for my loved one to make them most comfortable?” Compassion over ows in many ways, whether it’s sitting in silence or lending a listening ear. Needs are heard and taken care of to the best of their ability.
Not all patients are elderly; one was even 34 years old. Unfortunately, accepted end-of-life patients are getting younger.
Although they focus on end-of-life care, life is celebrated at Aurora House. Each resident matters. It’s important to learn about their life at every stage as well as who they are now. ere is wisdom in hearing their stories. Fun and laughter are encouraged within the house.
ere is much more to a person beyond their physical and medical needs. at is why volunteers at Aurora House
ll wishes and residents’ and family requests. A visit from a precious pet or a call from out-of-town relatives can be arranged.
Volunteers are the heart of this home. Cooking, cleaning, gardening, event planning, and fundraising are all part of the giving and caring. Donations, memorials, grants, and fundraisers support the home’s operation. Care and related services are free of charge to the patient and their family thanks to the generosity of the community, friends, and neighbors.
Before a loved one climbs the stairway to heaven, this wonderful home provides the opportunity to share special moments that will live on forever.
Everyone processes grief di erently. Having conversations and o ering resources helps people prepare and understand what they will face. Aurora House sta educates those facing loss and grief onsite and in the community. Hard conversations about end-of-life wishes are essential.
Aurora House sta meets people where they are in their stage of care, and they help people understand what to expect. Support continues for families a er the loved one passes. Sta mail cards to families to let them know they remember them on special days.
Aurora House survives solely on donations and volunteers. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Anyone interested in donating personal, household, or other items Aurora House needs should check the home’s website at aurorahousewmc.com. Anything a house needs to function, they need. ey don’t want patients’ families to need anything during their stay.
Two large annual fundraisers help raise necessary funds. Casino Night this year is scheduled for April 21st at the Italian American Community Center. e night features celebrity bartenders, Doug Emblidge, Jennifer Lewke, and Sheri Todd Baxter. Join in a fun evening of ra es, prizes, hors d’oeuvres, and live music by John Akers.
Baskets and Brunch in October is Aurora House’s other big fundraiser. Anyone interested may create and donate a basket or you may drop o items or cash to go toward a basket. More information will be available on the home’s website.
Smaller events sprinkled throughout the year, such as the community favorite chicken barbecue, help support Aurora House.

CAUSES OF BAD BREATH
Bad breath, also called halitosis, is caused by the bacteria that grow in our mouths on bits of food that get stuck between teeth. The bacteria release sulfur compounds that cause your breath to smell bad. Contrary to common belief, you can’t counteract bad breath by using mouthwash: you must brush for two minutes twice a day and floss daily. In addition to regular brushing, daily flossing is the best way to avoid bad breath because it removes food particles from in between teeth. Certain pungent foods such as onions and garlic also cause bad breath because their oils are carried into the lungs and then recycled into your mouth through the respiratory system.
At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our purpose in presenting this column is to exhibit the virtues of professional care as well as diligent home care in achieving and maintaining a
healthy, vibrant smile. Through a combination of proven techniques and innovative technology, plus communication and compassionate concern, we attempt to move our patients toward an optimum state of oral health. When was your last dental checkup? Now is a good time to schedule an appointment for comprehensive dental care, including help with bad breath, helpful dietary information, cleanings, restorations, cosmetic work, or gum disease treatment. Call us at 6 Batavia City Centre, 585.343.4246.
P.S. You cannot determine whether you have bad breath by breathing into your cupped hands. Talking, rather than breathing, brings odors from the back of your mouth to the front.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Chalazions Continue to Develop in Both Eyelids
DEAR DR. ROACH: Are oral antibiotics ever prescribed to treat chalazions, in addition to eye drops and ointment? I have had two this year for seemingly no reason. They were treated with tobramycin eye drops, ointment and warm compresses. The first one didn’t resolve with those meds and was excised surgically. That eyelid then became infected without a chalazion and was treated with a second round of antibiotic drops. It remains a bit puffy and pinkish in color, which I chalked up to the new normal appearance. Now, a chalazion has developed in the other eyelid. I don’t wear eye makeup and use an eyelid cleanser recommended by my ophthalmologist. I am an otherwise healthy 76-year-old woman. Could there be a systemic bacterial or viral infection causing chalazions to keep developing? -- M.W.
ANSWER: The terms for different types of eyelid lesions can be a bit confusing. Most people are familiar with a stye, which is a localized inflammation of the upper or lower eyelid, most commonly caused by an infection of one of the glands of the external eye, usually by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. A stye is also called a hordeolum. An external hordeolum is in the eyelash follicle or the lid margin, whereas an internal hordeolum is inflammation in the meibomian glands, the ones that secrete mucous to help keep the eyes lubricated.
Makeup can block these glands and predispose someone to hordeola. Hordeola are treated with warm compresses and sometimes by an eye specialist, with a combination of antibiotic drops and topical steroids. Drainage by an ophthalmologist is necessary if it doesn’t get better within one to two weeks. If the infection gets into the skin around the eye, it may need oral antibiotics. A chalazion is not an infection. It’s a usually painless rubbery mass in the eyelid. A chalazion can be a complication of a hordeolum, since the glands are blocked by inflammation, leading to thickened secretions from the gland. Since it’s not an infection, neither oral nor topical eye antibiotics are useful. These also usually get better with warm compresses over weeks to months. People with recurrent chalazia should be considered for biopsy, since they can turn out to be tumors in rare circumstances.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH
Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole.
Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight. Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. Alayerofmulcharoundthebaseofthetreecanpreventweedsandreduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. It’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System
When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.
Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.
Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.
Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

TREE SERVICES TIPS FOR EASY SNOW REMOVAL
(NAPSI)—It’s the heart of winter, which means plenty of snow removal is in your future. Poorly maintained equipment and using the wrong clearing techniques can make shoveling or blowing your driveway and walkways a chore. Follow the tips below to make snow removal as easy as possible.
Start Early and Shovel Often
It’s easier to shovel an inch or two of fresh snow than half a foot of snow that’s densely packed. Shovel first thing in the morning and, if it continues to snow, go out every couple of hours to clear a few inches at various points throughout the day.
Maintain
Your Equipment
If you didn’t perform maintenance on your snowblower before the winter season, it’s not too late. On gasoline-powered machines, check the oil level before each use. Inspect and change damaged or worn spark plugs, belts and shave plates. On all snowblowers, be sure to maintain proper tire pressure. After you’ve finished for the day, run the machine for a minute or so to clear out snow.
Shovel the Right Way
Shoveling to remove snow can be hard work, so protect your body and make the job a bit easier by pushing the snow instead of lifting it. To prevent aches and pains, keep your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees, keep your back straight and avoid twisting your torso if you must lift the snow. Finally, spray WD-40 Multi-Use Product on the shovel blade to prevent snow from sticking to it for easier transfer of snow from sidewalks and driveways.
Learn about more uses for WD-40 Multi-Use Product around the home and find it at a store near you at WD40.com.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles Covid
... It’s Still Here
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of Covid cases has steadily risen since December. Earlier in the fall, Covid took a short break while the u and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) made it to center stage. ose illnesses are now waning a bit, and here comes Covid again.
It doesn’t help that we have a new variant -- an o shoot of Omicron, the XBB.1.5 -- taking o around the country. By Christmas nearly half the cases of Covid were that new variant, so it’s growing.
Seniors, as usual, are being hit hard with those in the age 70+ range being the largest group a ected, followed by ages 60-69.
If you’re hesitant to go back to being extremely careful, we’re experiencing what some doctors are calling the Senior Wave. It means the numbers on a graph show that the largest group a ected with hospitalizations are seniors.
Which means it’s still not time to let down our guard. If anything, it means renewing our e orts to stay safe. Frequent handwashing, wearing a mask in the store, even if you’re the only one who is, staying out of large groups ... we know how to do this.
And like it or not, we should. e growing number of seniors being hospitalized or dying due to Covid should shake up all of us.
Another, and possibly even more accurate, statistic for the spread of Covid is the wastewater. is is where municipalities test the sewage for Covid. People can hide their exposure and illness by using the at-home tests we all received in the mail, thereby skewing the “o cial” numbers, but the sewage in an area is sure to be more accurate.
To see the wastewater data by county, go online to CDC.gov and search for “National Wastewater Surveillance System” (NWSS).

While people who make New

According to researchers at the University of Scranton, just 8 percent of people who make their New Year’s resolutions actually achieve those resolutions. While that might make it seem like the odds are against men and women who have resolved to improve their lives in the year ahead, adults can realize their goals for the new year and beyond.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CAT REPRODUCTION
While there is still some debate among veterinarians as to the best age at which to spay or neuter cats, the general consensus seems to be the earlier the better, particularly if cats have access to other cats that are not fixed. This can occur as early as age six to eight weeks, while standard spays and neuters occur at five to six months of age. Vets who advocate for spaying before the first heat say it nearly eliminates the risk of mammary cancer, and spayed cats will not develop ovarian and uterine cancers, according to PetMD.

Two of the keys to living longer may be spending more time with family and remaining socially engaged. According to research and the book, “The How of Happiness,” by Sonja Lyubomirsky, long-lived cultures attribute their longevity to keeping people close. An analysis of three communities of very long-living people in Lyubomirsky’s book - Sardinians in Italy, Okinawans in Japan and Seventh-Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California - revealed that they all had five priorities in common. At the top of that list were “Put family first” and “Keep socially engaged.” Good friendships, deep relationships with family members and social engagement are essential to a long, happy life. This New Year’s Eve, more people may want to resolve to prioritize friends and family more than they already do. Not only can doing so deepen relationships, but it also can keep people healthier by reducing stress and the risk of developing illnesses related to depression and loneliness. Today is a great time to reconnect with members of the family and schedule a longawaited visit.

CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY
Traditionally, men have gifted women with boxes of chocolate for Valentine’s Day. However, that role is reversed in other areas of the world. For example, in Japan, women give gifts - namely chocolates - to the men in their lives to express love, courtesy or social obligation. This tradition first began in 1936 when confectioner Morozoff Ltd. ran the first ever Valentine’s Day ad in Japan through a local English newspaper. By the 1950s, other Japanese confectioners were following suit.

NOTABLE FIGURES TO CELEBRATE THIS BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Viola Davis Desmond: Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1914, Viola Davis Desmond took a stand for African Canadians in 1946 when she refused to sit in the balcony at the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, a section designated for Blacks. Desmond was forcibly removed and arrested and ultimately fined and sentenced to 30 days in jail. She took her case all the way to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, which upheld the verdict. Desmond passed away in 1965, but in 2010 the province of Nova Scotia issued an official apology and pardoned her.

Exercising outdoors in winter can be exhilarating, but athletes must prioritize staying warm and safe for the duration of their workouts.
NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* Toothpaste works well as a silver polish. Wet your silver, plop a little non-gel toothpaste on it and rub gently to clean. Rinse well and let it shine.
* A great hint from Mary R. of Duluth, Georgia: If the kids are drawing with felt markers and their hands get covered with ink, don’t worry. Just spray their hands down with hairspray, then wipe off the ink with a paper towel. Don’t forget to wash their hands afterward!
* Dip your toothbrush in baking soda before you add toothpaste when brushing your teeth. You get used to the taste, but the extra scrub really gets your teeth clean, and it’s very inexpensive to use. -- R.E. in Arizona
* Have clumped-up sugar in the canister? No worries. To keep sugar from hardening, add a slice of bread to the container from time to time, and leave it there a day before removing.
* Use this quick fix for oily hair. Rub a small amount of cornstarch into the oily areas of your hair. The cornstarch will soak up the dirt and oil; you just brush it out.
* A reader from Michigan wonders: How can I keep from having static head, especially when using a hat? The answer: You probably already have a tube of lip balm in your pocket or purse. Rub some on your palms, then run your palms over your hair.

FINANCING FUNERALS
According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

Parking area negligence
It is deplorable how many public buildings do not take care of handicap parking spots. Last year I had to quit physical therapy because you could not safely get from the car to the building. Their response “the landlord is responsible for clearing the parking lot and sidewalks.” I quit. Ff they were concerned for anyones well-being, they would address it………or was that job security for them? The handicap spots at the local senior center are never clear. They should be bone dry. I realize they cannot plow or salt when there are cars in the spots, but they should instruct their drivers to clear and salt before the center opens or after it closes. It is just common sense.
Thank you Guardian Angel!
Thank you to the gentleman who was in Geneseo Noyes Urgent Care on Saturday, January 14th. I had arrived for an X-ray but there was no order on file from the doctor. The receptionist suggested I go through urgent care who would then write a script. I was worried about the cost of taking that approach. The gentleman was sitting in the waiting room and spoke up that he would pay for my urgent care visit. I was amazed someone would be willing to do that. In the meantime, they were able to get ahold of my doctor and get the script. Regardless, I won’t forget the kindness a stranger was willing to give to me.
Purple Pony
I would just like to say thank you to The Genesee Valley Penny Saver for printing the wonderful article on Purple Pony. I had no idea they even existed. Horses are truly amazing, and to help with special needs of all ages tells a lot about these magnificent animals. Thank you, Purple Pony!
Response to "garbage plate modification"
I suppose it's none of my business how one modifies a garbage plate. While the modification of adding fish sticks to a plate with hot dogs and all the fixings is nothing short of, in my personal opinion, disgusting, I am more disturbed that someone is eating this every single day. Perhaps slowly adding in other lunches like salads and low-fat sandwiches would be beneficial to this person. As a medical professional, I see far too many people with garbage plate-related maladies in the greater Rochester area.

DID YOU KNOW?
Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, andretirementagecanarrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB
Don’t shirk responsibilities. It can be tempting to slack off when another job awaits. The popular job-hunting site Monster.com says it can be human nature to do less when long-term accountability is removed. However, you never know when you might need a referral or even a new job. Leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of your employer at the end of your work history can put a black mark on your employee record.
