* “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- G.G. in New York

* As tax time draws ever closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all tax-related forms and receipts in the envelope as they come in. This way, when you are ready to start your taxes, all items will be together and easy to find.

* “My no-iron tip: I toss the wrinkly garment into the dryer for about five to 10 minutes with a damp washcloth, and it steams most wrinkles out. It won’t look starched and pressed, but it’s good enough for casual wear or running-late mornings. I haven’t ironed in years.” -- E.W. in Florida

* Don’t forget to clean your washing machine every so often by running it on the highest-temperature cycle empty after adding a gallon of vinegar. This will clean out the hoses and get rid of stuck-on detergents. * To remove soot from your carpet, sprinkle it with salt, let sit and then vacuum. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all traces.

Training Your Dog for Hiking Season

There’s no need to suffer with ankle and foot problems!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 1-year-old puppy, Corky, is an energetic mutt who loves to be outside. I started hiking last year, before I adopted Corky, and I plan to do lots more hiking trips when the weather gets warmer. I want to bring Corky along, but I’ve read mixed advice about dogs on trails and at campsites. What’s your take? -- Ellen in Boulder, Colorado DEAR ELLEN: You can definitely take Corky along! Preparation is key: You must prepare Corky for the hike, and you need to research the trails before departing to find out important information, including: -- Are dogs allowed on the trail? -- What are other rules about pets on the trail? -- How long is the hike you’re planning? -- How far can Corky reasonably walk? -- Is water available along the trail, or will you need to carry extra for your dog? -- How good is Corky’s behavior training -- will he come to you as soon as you call? When I’m on a hike, I follow Leave No Trace rules -- which also apply to dogs, so be prepared to carry out his poop -- and another set of rules I call “Annoy No Other Hikers.” Included in this personal set of rules are a few dog-specific ones: -- Keep my dog on a leash during the hike, especially on popular trails. -- Clean up after my dog. -- Make sure to carry adequate water, food, first aid and safety gear (such as booties and vest). -- Keep my dog under control when greeting oncoming hikers. Not everyone is thrilled by dogs, and a jumping, out-of-control dog does the community no favors. Find more training and hiking tips at the American Hiking Society (americanhiking.org/resources/ hiking-with-dogs/). Pick up dog gear advice at Reckless Roaming (recklessroaming.com/how-tohike-with-your-dog/). And Chewy has some good all-around tips as well. See you on the trail! Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

CHOOSE WISELY IN SELECTING VALENTINE GIFTS Eschew overly personal gifts. If your relationship is in its infancy and you haven’t both mutually expressed interest to take it to the next level, avoid gifts that suggest moving in together (appliances), personal fragrances, couples massages, or other intimate activities. Wait until the relationship has reached certain milestones before getting too personal with gifts.

585-548-7329 PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Dogs mature at faster rates than human beings. While many have heard the rule that every human year equals seven dog years, the reality isn’t so cut and dry. Size and breed play roles in determining a dog’s age equivalent. According to the pets division of WebMD, the first year of life for a dog may be roughly equivalent to 15 years for a human. Dog food manufacturer Purina says that by its tenth year alive, a small, medium and large dog is 56, 60 and 66 in human years, respectively.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes. Organizing a gift auction requires a team of dedicated volunteers. * Enlist a team of gift-wrappers. Presentation may determine bids and increase those bids. Ask for donations of baskets and wrapping materials, such as ribbon and cellophane. Each prize can be wrapped in ways to entice bidders to bid high and bid often.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

When tending to their lawns, homeowners are advised to pay attention to areas that may feature standing water. According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if gone it goes undiscovered. Standing water also can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnant water is a problem in your yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Beware of the Cold Administrators of the local senior center called it a tailgate party and envisioned many dozens of elderly gathered in the parking lot outside the center, drinking coffee and snacking on doughnuts from the bakery. They’d sent out notices and emails a week in advance. No one showed up. Not a single senior was to be seen, while center management stood on the steps wringing their hands and wondering why. The problem, we all know, is that the oldest of the senior center management team is less than half our average age, with their assistants barely out of college. Degrees galore, of course, in gerontology this and geriatric that, but framed documents hanging on the wall don’t indicate a personal knowledge of what all seniors know for fact: We get cold! Not only do we get cold, but we have to be careful. Our circulation isn’t what it used to be. We lose body heat faster and sometimes don’t even know it’s happening. When our core temperature drops too low, it can damage our liver, kidney and heart. Hypothermia is a real risk and can be deadly. It bears repeating that we need to beware of the cold. Here’s what you can do to stay on top of your own body temperature: • Don’t skimp on the heat at home. Keep the thermostat at 68-70 F and wear a sweater inside. (If you visit an elderly person in the winter, go to the thermostat and see what the setting is.) If you must save money on heating, close off rooms you’re not using. • Ask someone to install clear plastic film insulation on your windows. You’ll be surprised how much it cuts down on icy drafts. • Keep a blanket or quilt on the sofa or recliner, and cover up when you sit down. • If you have to go out, wear layers and a good hat, gloves and scarf. Don’t let body heat escape out of your neckline. And if your senior center hosts an outdoor parking-lot gathering, check the weather report. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

Your Smiles

‘Brittle’ Diabetes Is Hard to Control

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

DENTAL IMPLANTS: A SOLUTION FOR MISSING TEETH Missing teeth affect speech, chewing, and the integrity of the jaw. They also cause slow shifting of teeth into the empty spaces. Restoration with dental implants is today’s most common solution, whether for one or multiple teeth. Implant replacements are reliable and look and feel like real teeth. When properly cared for, implants can last a lifetime. The somewhat lengthy implant process begins with replacement of the tooth’s root with metal screws that act as anchors for the artificial teeth to come. Once the screws are placed and the implant is given time to heal, the implant becomes securely fused to the jawbone. When completely healed, a dental crown is placed on top of the implant and secured.

If you are interested in finding out how implants can be of benefit to you, your smile, and your happiness, just give us a call at 585.343.4246, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We have years of experience turning imperfect smiles into ones our patients are proud to display. From sound advice about implants to routine well visits to major dental reconstructions, we’ve got your dental needs covered. Join our list of happy patients. When you need dental care of any kind, we’re here at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. The earliest versions of dental implants were carved bamboo pegs used in ancient Chinese civilization circa 2000 BC.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals. Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 74 years old and have been a brittle Type 1 diabetic for 50 years. I have no history of heart disease. My doctor of 40 years recently retired and had me control my hemoglobin A1C to a range of 5.96.2. My new doctor, who is in her mid-30s, wants me to elevate my hemoglobin A1C to 8.0. Is this the new way of controlling blood sugar? I am confused! Can you please explain the difference in opinion? -- E.S. ANSWER: “Brittle” diabetes is when it is hard to control too-high and too-low blood sugars. The A1C is a blood test that looks at average blood sugar over the past few months. A normal A1C is between 4% and 5.6%. People with normal A1C levels are at very low risk of complications from diabetes, especially of the kidneys (leading to dialysis), eyes (which ultimately leads to blindness) and nerves (diabetic neuropathy is painful and predisposes to injury). On the other hand, low A1C levels put people at higher risk for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can be very dangerous. People with Type 2 diabetes and blockages in blood vessels (or at very high risk) were shown to have higher risk of heart attack. For this reason, recent guidelines for older adults with Type 2 diabetes have had more relaxed goals, in the range of 7 to 8, although these do need to be individualized. For Type 1 diabetes, most guidelines still recommend an A1C goal of less than 7%. However, for a person with Type 1 diabetes who also has other medical problems that are likely to impact mortality, and for those at high risk for severe hypoglycemia, a more relaxed goal is not unreasonable. Hypoglycemia is too-low blood sugar, with risk of confusion. This is a big problem in people with brittle diabetes. A lower A1C is associated with a lower risk of damage to small blood vessels, which is what is responsible for nerve damage, eye disease and most diabetic kidney disease. If you have been able to keep your A1C in the range of 5.9 to 6.2, which is not an easy feat, and have not had any serious episodes of low blood sugar recently, I would wonder why your new doctor feels your blood sugar needs to be substantially higher than it is. Finding the right balance between good control and freedom from hypoglycemia isn’t always easy, but these are the risks and benefits your doctors have been considering. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. (c) 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

It seems that, if you do not have a computer, the only way to communicate with them is to go to the facility. Apparently, they disconnected the individual phones so as not to pay to have someone answer them.

S E V RA Service matters! I would love to give a huge shout out to the wonderful people who work at the Valero Gas Station on Route 39 (Wadsworth Ave) in Avon. Being one of the few full service stations around, they get many customers, myself included, who stop to avail themselves of their wonderful service, either due to weather or for convenience. Even during these bitterly cold days they still manage to greet you with an upbeat attitude and a smile. I, for one, find it refreshing and will continue to frequent their business for some time to come. Toys for Tots The Memorial Day Detachment #468 Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in our 2021 Toys For Tots campaign in Ontario and Livingston counties. Due to your help and generosity, we were able to distribute over 6,000 toys and help around 2,000 children have a Merry Christmas. A lot of these children would not have otherwise been able to celebrate the holiday with a new toy without your help. All of the toys collected in each county are distributed in that county along with donations from our great corporate sponsors. Thank you and we look forward to our 2022 campaign.

Living in a Winter Wonderland What a great time for us to get outdoors, be it for a day trip or a weekend away from home. Out of shape? No problem! Walk along a groomed trail, dirt road, or just hop off the roadside, turn the car off, and listen. Too many times, people that have lived in Upstate NY for years are complaining about cold and snow. By April, I become one, but far more often, complaints are as vast as the blinding tundra. Enjoy the snow, put up with the cold, and if you find yourself saying, “Snow, go away” in January, maybe it is time to pack up and move.

Bus red lights Please stop running my bus' red lights. When a bus stops and the red lights are on, that means you need to stop! Not to keep driving through and give me a wave. In the last few weeks, I have had many people running the red on my bus. We are trying to get kids safely to and from school. Please stop a distance from the bus so we know you are stopping and watching for our kids! Let's all be safe out on the road. Slow down please! To the residents of [local road]: I live here. The road is eight miles long, double yellow, and 35 MPH the entire length because of all its curves and turns. You could probably stretch 35 MPH to 41 or 42, but not 50 or 55. I am tired of taking my life in my hands just getting my mail. Also, I do not like the dirty looks I get for slowing you down while crossing the road. I am 71, and I would like to see 72. Seriously! I didn't get a chance to vote in that GVPS poll asking about the environment. I am not concerned at all about the environment. Why should I be concerned about something that cannot be controlled? So, that would be 42%, plus 1. Have a nice day. Animal Advocates Thank you to all who watch out for and help helpless animals. You do not have to donate to an organization who pays their CEO $750,000 a year. You can make a huge difference in an animals well-being by donating to your local animal shelter or volunteering. You can also buy cat and dog food and deliver it to families in need or the woman down your street or in the next neighborhood who feeds and gives shelter to stray cats. Three friends and I have been doing this for a couple years now. We have yet to have anyone refuse food for the animals. You won't have to look too far to find animals in need. As for reporting suspected abuse or neglect, yes, call 911. They will direct you to your local animal control/animal abuse contact numbers, and your issue will be checked out. See something; say something. You are their voice.

Protecting Our Ecosystems at Churchville-Chili Middle School BY AMANDA PULEO

F

ifth graders at Churchville-Chili Middle School have been learning about the importance of clean water in the environment, and on Jan. 7 they welcomed Rochester Institute of Technology’s Environmental Education Specialist Kaeti Stoss to their classrooms to dive deeper into the subject.

Students compared their test tube samples to the pH chart to determine if the creek is able to support a range of healthy life forms.

Students were then able to do several hands-on experiments with lab equipment and water samples from Irondequoit Creek that Stoss supplied. With the help of Churchville-Chili Enrichment Specialists Andrea Lynch and Stephanie Ricci, students tested the water’s pH and then examined their healthy stream water for a myriad of life forms, including tiny fish, crane fly larvae and water beetles.

Students were asked to share their thoughts and experiences on how to keep waterways healthy.

Stoss is an ambassador for RIT’s water quality-focused environmental education programming for grades K-12. Her mission is to increase awareness and inspire young people to protect this vital resource. Fifth grade classes had just finished a standard science unit on water and are venturing into a study of ecosystems and macro invertebrates, so Stoss’ presentation made an excellent learning bridge. Participating students learned about the unexpectedly high amount of water we use every day, the part water plays in building healthy ecosystems, the many threats to water quality, and practical actions they can take to cut down on pollution. They were also introduced to the concept of pH and learned the effects acid rain has on waterways. Water samples contained a wide variety of healthy fish, insects, larvae and mussels.

HOW TO CREATE STRUCTURE AFTER RETIREMENT Find something to truly engage in. Professionals who truly enjoy their work tend to be fully engaged, so it’s no surprise if such individuals have a hard time adjusting to retirement. Some may suggest volunteering can help fill the void created by retirement, but researchers with the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College have found that only those individuals who are truly engaged in their post-retirement volunteering enjoy the psychological benefits of such pursuits. So before retirees dive right in to volunteering as a means to creating structure, they should first exercise due diligence and find an opportunity they’ll find genuinely engaging.
