Extend the life of your vehicle: Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well.

How Safe Is Ultrasound? DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of ultrasounds during routine pregnancies? How many typically are performed, and are there any possible negative effects on the fetus? Are doctors today performing more ultrasounds (including 3-D ultrasounds) just because they can and because it’s exciting for the expectant parents, or is there a medical reason for performing these? My daughter-in-law is in her sixth month and has had two ultrasounds, plus a 3-D session. She is under the impression that she will have at least one more. To my knowledge, this is not a high-risk pregnancy (she’s 26 and everything is going fine). I’m just wondering if so many sessions are really needed and what is known about the effects on the fetus. -- G.M. ANSWER: There is some controversy over whether an ultrasound poses risks to the developing fetus. The Food and Drug Administration has noted that there may be some heating of tissues and that any long-term risks are unknown. I did find studies showing that there is no long-term risk of leukemia, hearing loss or abnormal eye development. A 2013 guideline from multiple groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recommended a standard first-trimester ultrasound, and a standard second- or third-trimester ultrasound. Any other ultrasounds would be based on a clinician’s concern for a potential problem. The guideline specifically states: “Fetal ultrasound should be performed only when there is a valid medical reason, and the lowest possible ultrasonic exposure settings should be used to gain the necessary diagnostic information.” I don’t have enough information to know why your daughter-in-law has had more ultrasounds than is usually recommended for a normal pregnancy. Perhaps her obstetrician has a low-level concern she hasn’t shared with her, or your daughter-in-law with you. While not the case for her, I am concerned about the growing trend of so-called keepsake ultrasounds that are not performed for valid medical reasons, such as those done in shopping malls. These might not be administered with the same degree of expertise and safety as a medical ultrasound. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78 and have had urinary tract infections continually for the past eight or nine months. My urologist prescribed methenamine for six months, then a month of cephalexin, then back to the first prescription. Why is it so hard to get rid of UTIs? What would you recommend? - A.C.S. ANSWER: Frequent urine infections are common. However, it is important to find out if this is the same infection that hasn’t ever gone away, or a series of new infections. An infection that doesn’t go away needs an evaluation for something abnormal in the urinary tract, such as a kidney stone. Your urologist is treating you with medication to prevent new infections. Methanamine is a urinary antiseptic, and cephalexin is a broadspectrum antibiotic. You didn’t tell me if you are a man or a woman. Men with recurrent infections should be evaluated for prostate issues. Women with recurrent UTIs frequently are affected by atrophic vaginitis. There are many other causes. I want to thank my neighbor across the street on Broxbourne Drive in Fairport for helping to plow my driveway after the snowstorm on February 16 when he saw that my snowplow was too small to tackle the amount of snow that had piled up on my driveway. He wouldn’t even accept the money I offered him for his troubles. I want to thank the Webster Goodyear on Empire Blvd. for filling my tires with air when they were low on February 13 during the coldsnow spell we had that weekend. The man not only filled my tires, he didn’t charge me for it. I was on my way out to Hilton to see my girlfriend and I made it with plenty of time to enjoy together! I wish to send a big shout out THANK YOU to the snow plow driver who pushed the snow out of my

driveway Tuesday 2/16/16. I was out shoveling the remaining piles from an earlier plow, when you stopped and pushed it out of the way! What a blessing it was to me! You are an angel! I’d like to thank all those good citizens who helped me round up my two horses when they decided to make their great winter escape on Wednesday morning 2/17/16. They trotted down snow covered roads, Jackson & South, Holley. Cindi Davis saw me trying to catch the rouge ponies and gave me a ride to keep up with the horses. Once I caught the horses I had to walk them home. Cindi stayed behind me with her car flashers on to warn traffic. Two other good citizens helped, John Carp & a red SUV; I was unable to get her name. A big THANKS to all!!

That’s what happened recently. Please do this good deed because it will come back to you. The wildlife deserve to be protected. To the vent about Volunteer members picking up meals and shopping with ambulance. Join us there is a U in VolUnteer and we need U. We are ON DUTY waiting for a call many hours a day as VOLUNTEERS. When a person is not employed--at all on any books anywhere-and has a few side jobs and earns cash--does that person file taxes AND GET A REFUND? What a scam, if true, when our military people don’t always receive a paycheck on time... Family members of the local mobile home park get special treatment from the employees who work for the park. And the employees happen to be relatives. They get their driveways plowed for free. Work done on their home for free. They can use empty lot parking for free – where we get charged $25. The rest of the residents have to pay for everything! And get rent hikes!! In this mobile home park – there is no justice!

Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

Celebrating a Storyteller A storyteller is someone who can bring your imagination to life with the tales that they tell. What’s more amazing is when the stories that are told are pieces of a life that spans 104 years. Frances Fonte was born Feb. 7, 1912 in Rochester, NY. She was the oldest of 5 boys and 2 girls. She grew up on Warehouse St. near Kodak. Fran went to No.17 school and attended Jefferson High School for two years before she had to drop out at age 15 to go to work. And then her stories start... “I worked at the Quality Heel Factory in Rochester. My cousin Ethel got me the job. I got paid good money because it was piece work. I gave some money to my grandma and I got to keep some on the side.” And then Fran laughs before continuing, “I liked to dance, and I was a flapper! Loved the Charleston. Once I went to a speakeasy and it got raided! More people drank during prohibition than before! My uncle ran a saloon where you could buy beer in a pail. There was a 5 cent pail and a 10 cent pail. I would bring a pail home to my dad.” Fran laughs again as she recalls the memory. She worked at the shoe factory for 30 years, but it closed because there wasn’t enough help during the war. Fran tells of a time when extended families lived together in neighborhoods. She lived through the Depression and tells a story of when she would organize her siblings into a “performing” act. Her brother would play the drums and her four year old sister Angie would dance at birthday parties for money. “I would tell her to do the ‘Russian’ dance ‘cause people would throw coins out for that. I was in charge of the bag that held the money.” In 1933 Fran married Vito “Vic” Fonte. The two eloped and were married by a justice of the peace in Bergen, NY. Two weeks later they got remarried in St. Lucy’s church. As she says that, Fran remembers another story. “I remember going to St. Lucy’s when I was young. One of my teachers was a nun who thought I should cut my very long hair. I let her talk me into it, but then I was afraid to go home! My uncle (a lawyer) was very upset about it. He tried to get the nun arrested, but the judge threw the case out because he said that was the style. What was my uncle

That they’d really arrest a nun?!” And then there is more laughter. The couple had a daughter, Rita, in 1935. Vic was drafted in the Navy in 1944, thirteen months before the war ended. Sadly, Vic got pneumonia and died in Philadelphia. Fran got a telegram as they didn’t have a phone. She and Rita moved in with family. Fran never remarried. Today Fran is still close with her family. Her sister Angie (the youngest at 94 years old) and brother-inlaw visit weekly and her daughter Rita visits a lot at Wedgewood Nursing Facility where she has lived for the past five years. If a life well lived is measured by the stories we tell, then Frances has had a wonderful life filled with wonderful family and friends, laughter, and tears, and joy. As she turned 104 this month we want to wish her a very happy birthday and thank her for all the joy he brings when she shares her stories!

Diet and exercise needs change as men and women age Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people. One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to detect as you get older. In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie intake, seniors should continue to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy. While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients. The body’s nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with their physicians.
