our story ...

RUSTY NICKEL BREWING CO. It only takes the distance from Rusty Nickel Brewing’s front door to its outdoor dining area to be transported from city suburbs to a cabin in the woods. The outdoor space is filled with barn wood tables and planters. Everything is in bloom from hanging flowers to blossom-covered planters to flowering greenery around the koi pond and trellis, thanks to Bengert Greenhouses of West Seneca. Much of this quiet hideaway (ranked #2 for outdoor pao spaces in WNY) is open air, with seang sheltered by a high clear corrugated roof which lets the light filter in. Tiki torches and firepits promise the fun will connue even aer the sun goes down. As it grows, Rusty Nickel Brewing connues to draw people to West Seneca, synergiscally benefing the community. In fact, Rusty Nickel is community focused, from local businesses to local families. The brewery supports local musicians, arsts, craers, food purveyors, wine, spirits and mead producers, apparel and merchandise suppliers, sausage makers, and even local cigars for its Cigars & Whiskey events. Rusty Nickel also hosts a family-friendly Harvest Fesval each year (with pumpkin beer for the grownups), and all the carving and beer pumpkins are provided by Ziles Farms of Eden, NY. Their can art design is even created by a West Seneca arst. Ecology is also very important to Dave, Jason and Kae, and Rusty Nickel grows its own tomatoes, peppers, grapes, herbs, and more! Its lush greenery has aracted many animals and birds for greater biodiversity and has created a parklike atmosphere. “We want to embrace nature and engage it, not be wasteful.” In fact, even dogs, who are very welcome here, benefit from this no-waste mindset, enjoying specialty dog treats produced by 2 Sister Dog Biscuits from Rusty Nickel’s spent grains. Moving through 2021, Rusty Nickel is available to host pares, weddings, showers, off-site events, and all kinds of in-house events, seang up to 180 guests in its outdoor hideaway. This space is expanding with more sheltered outdoor seang and a second firepit area, a giant new pond, more beer garden space, and yard games, even yoga! Rusty Nickel will also add made-from-scratch American fare, cheeses, charcuterie boards, and more. Alongside its mouthwatering beers, the brewery now offers hard ciders and seltzers made in-house as well as spirits, mead, and wines sourced from | NY wineries and dislleries.

locally made + local ingedients NYS FARM BREWERY

Established in 2015 by owners Jason Havens and Dave Johnson, Rusty Nickel Brewing was one of the first farm breweries in Erie County; it has been a leader in connecng farm breweries and local agriculture ever since. New York Farm Breweries must create their brews with at least 60% of their ingredients coming from NY growers; Rusty Nickel strives for 90%. In fact, it sources most of its ingredients, including fruit and grain, from local growers and maltsters, and their hops from the New York Hop Guild. ... Wallpaper Artist Brings “Queen City” Indoors! Historic Downtown Buffalo comes to life through Red Disk’s Queen City Toile wallpaper! This wallpaper boasts several different varieties in color and style as it captures the spirit of Buffalo via its well-known architectural achievements. Toile wallpaper is making a comeback in the American home, adding a sense of regal elegance to any living space. Derived from the French language and originating in the 1700s, toile translates as “linen cloth” or “canvas” and is typically a repeated pattern depicting a pastoral scene. Local artists at Red Disk studio provide a fresh take on this vintage look. 10 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo

our wallpaper designs. We have a rich architectural history, and we want to celebrate that.”

“If you can dream it, you can do it,” believes founder Traci Ackerman. Only someone who loves Buffalo as much as she does would be able to make Red Disk studio the success it is today. Ever-expanding, Red Disk takes on influences from both classical and modern artists, most notably, late world-renowned artist Charles Burchfield. Arguably one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Burchfield’s mark can be felt when viewing any number of the pieces at Red Disk studio. Best known for creating romantic and impressionist watercolor paintings of nature and small-town life, Burchfield gained prestige in 1936 after Life Magazine dubbed him “one of America’s ten greatest painters.” His roots and influences are firmly planted in Buffalo. Traci Ackerman, a former art teacher, is almost as passionate about making Burchfield’s work accessible to the public again as she is about the city she calls home. “One of the pieces to our mission is to choose artists that have a story. When we think about bringing in artists, whatever their story is, that’s what we feel really connects to

There is no greater example than illustrator Karen Matchette, the artist behind the top selling Queen City Toile. A graduate of Buff State, Matchette honed her skills for thirteen years as an apprentice under the tutelage of “Dennis the Menace” artist Hank Ketcham in San Francisco. Says Matchette, “He was such a master of illustrating, in just a few lines being able to tell a story. I learned from the best.” She has also contributed work for famous comic strips such as “The Flintstones,” “For Better or For Worse” and “Scooby Doo.” With an impressive attention to detail, Matchette weaves architecture and home interior design together like no other. Paying homage to the city of Buffalo and its vibrant cultural history, Matchette invokes a time gone by with her unique artistry. Queen City Toile depicts timeless Buffalo hallmarks such as: Buffalo City Hall, Guaranty Building, Statler Towers, Richardson Olmsted Campus, Buffalo Central Terminal, Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, Delaware Park, and Marcy Casino. Celebrating Buffalo’s golden age, her illustrations bring these historical gems into area homes. The inspiration came from turn-ofthe-century Buffalo. The years between 1870 and 1900 were known as Buffalo’s “Gilded Age.” While the nation was

coming out of the grips of Civil War, Buffalo was quickly becoming an epicenter for booming new industries ready to revitalize the economy. This resulted in significant cultural changes and new contributions to the Buffalo community such as architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s majestic “Martin House.” Queen City Toile is produced by Red Disk with its hand silkscreen process and printed with C2 paint created locally in Buffalo. This silkscreening processes can be viewed in action on Red Disk’s website! In essence, it is an intricate method of transferring complex designs and patterns onto fabric. While every customer can pick and choose from an assortment of colors, Red Disk’s diverse pattern options takes the “guesswork out of deciding” according to Ackerman, noting that wallpaper designs range from the enchanting, architecturally inspired “Queen City Toile” to the captivating, natureinspired art of Cassandra Ott. Passionate, local artists like Matchette offer a vantage point that is distinctly Buffalo and yet another reason to consider shopping locally for home décor. Drawing upon both the past and present, their pieces are art, thoughtful and uplifting, to be displayed on the walls of area homes. Karen Manchette and Red Disk Studio are proud to honor Buffalo, the city they call home. THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM |Buffalo 11

Opened 33 years ago at Buffalo’s Broadway Market, Chrusciki Bakery was founded by owner Ania Duchon’s parents, Tadeusz and Hania Robieniek, who traveled from Poland to live in the United States. The family later established a second bakery locaon in Lancaster, New York, at which they also sold pierogi. Faced with COVID restricons, they worked hard to open an innovave third locaon at Buffalo’s Eastern Hills Mall, featuring a refined, “big living room” dining space for Chrusciki Bakery, Simply Pierogi, and Sto Lat Bar.

Everybody mattes. BY AMANDA DUDEK

If you are enjoying a delicious meal with flexible pricing and one of your chefs is “that blonde chick with the walker who wears too much yellow,” you have probably found yourself at Big Big Table Community Café in the company of Co-Owner and Chef Mandy Bailey. The Café is a part of the organization One World Everybody Eats (OWEE), a network of cafés which follow the payas-you-can community café model. We caught up with Mandy Bailey and Big Big Table Board President, Stephanie Smith, to discover just what this new restaurant is all about. What inspired Big Big Table? It all began with a providential friendship. Stephanie: Several years ago, someone introduced Mandy to Cathy Riley-Goddard, and the two became fast friends. Cathy later read an article about OWEE which described how Bon Jovi helped to spread this restaurant model and said she heard “Mandy Bailey” wherever the article said “Jon Bon Jovi.” She shared her vision with Mandy. Mandy: It was like the heavens opened, and I knew this is what I was meant to do! How does it work? It is a nonprofit restaurant which serves quality food for which patrons pay what they can. Stephanie: This model has worked in several other cities throughout the country. We will have suggested menu pricing, and whether you pay $0.20 or $20, you will have the same high-quality meal. Food rescue is also very important, and we accept damaged, “ugly,” and excess goods with shelf life left. We take the foods we have readily available and that are in season, and we create dishes from them. We plan to open five days a week for an extended lunch and serve a soup of the day, a salad of

the day, a pizza of the day, rice and grain bowls and more. Mandy: I look around and say, “What do we have?” to decide what we are making. That's what I call home cooking! Sounds like Mandy is passionate about feeding others. How did that start? Mandy grew up with fond memories of cooking in her dad’s kitchen and once partnered to run a catering service and “cakery” before moving to Buffalo for work. Stephanie: Mandy has tattoos of large serving utensils right from her dad’s kitchen drawers, the very ones she grew up learning to cook with. After moving to Buffalo for a corporate food job, she realized she didn’t really jive with the job culture at her core. A lot of food was going to waste, and she wondered how she could make sure that food was going to people instead. That was when Cathy came in with her community café inspiration. Mandy: Our mantra is “Everybody eats. Everybody gives. Everybody matters.” When do you plan to open? The Café hopes to open at the end of the summer, but a date has not yet been set. Stephanie: COVID made our journey take a little longer. We did fundraise, and we organized a crowd funding campaign. We didn’t know what to expect given the pandemic difficulties, but we were blown away by how very responsive and willing to support Big Big Table people were. We exceeded our goal and

Sip, Sample, Shop & Share were able to purchase our equipment and sign our lease. We are preparing the space and getting ready to hire our first two staff members as we look forward to our grand opening. Mandy: People are giving us their energy and momentum. One day, we hope to have a literal big, big table for our guests to sit next to each other even if they didn’t come in together.

What are some ways people can support the café? Volunteers will make up the majority of those working at the café. Hospitality training and other workforce development opportunities are being planned, as well. Stephanie: We are so excited to be able to bring this vision to life and to welcome people to the table to contribute in whatever way they are able. Chefs are volunteering to cook as guests in our kitchen. Businesses plan to send us their excess products; some of them and others sponsor us financially. Still others donate goods to us to use in our popup events. Anyone can contribute, and we can help stop food from going to waste. We look forward to both serving the community and having the community join us in serving. Mandy: All I have to say is, “Go, Team!”

Sip: Cuppa Culture is a locally owned & operated TEApourium dedicated exclusively to tea and only tea. For your in-house sipping pleasure, we serve freshly prepared, made-to-order teas & herbal blends in generous 12oz mugs, or as a unique English-style tea experience in a traditional teapot and a teacup & saucer set of your choosing. The Rustic Buffalo Artisan Market campus welcomes over 135 local artisans every weekend this summer. We have a feeling this is about to become your favorite destination. To help plan your visit, here’s our guide for a day the whole family will enjoy.

SHOP THE OUTDOOR MARKET Hosting over 20 new artisans every weekend through October, the can’t-miss Rustic Buffalo Artisan Outdoor Market is the first of three new additions to this local shopping spot in time for summer. “We opened Rustic Buffalo back in November as one indoor market space where local artisans struggling due to the pandemic could safely sell their goods,” said John Pirrone, co-owner of Rustic Buffalo Artisan Outdoor, which is sponsored by Bath Fitter. “When summer craft fairs and festivals started getting cancelled, we wanted to do more.” Trust us: This isn’t your average craft fair. The selection of vendors is curated based on quality and diversity of goods. That means you’ll discover everything from repurposed furniture and handcrafted décor to Buffalo themed clothing and gifts.

Shop the outdoor market every weekend through Oct. 31st, 10AM to 4PM

. . . . .

THERE’S FUN FOR YOUR KIDDOS, TOO! While you browse the outdoor market’s artisan creations, your kiddos can now safely play in the outdoor Family Game Zone. With games like Yahtzee, Cornhole and Jenga being supplied by Knotty Pines craftworks, they’ll have plenty of fun to occupy themselves – meaning you’ll have plenty of time to shop.

GRAB A GOURMET BITE

Play every weekend through Oct. 31, 10am-4pm

You can’t shop on an empty stomach! Stop by the Bake Shop and Café for fresh sweets – another exciting feature of the expansion. We offer an array of cookies, scones and more to enjoy porch-side with a coffee or on the go as you browse the grounds. For a savory spread, try the made-fresh-daily sandwiches, such as chicken salad mixed with cranberries and walnuts.

. . . . .

But that’s not all. Tucked inside the shop are 45 new local artisans in total, plus a gourmet kitchen featuring Buffalo’s best makers of sauces, salsas, and spreads.

Indulge Mon, Tues, & Fri 10am - 6pm; Wed & Thurs 10AM - 8PM; SaT 9AM - 5PM; SUN 10AM - 5PM

This boutique-style store is home to over 69 resident artisans who are continuously refining and creating new goods. Rustic Buffalo Artisan Market is proud to have been named “Best New Small Business of the Year” and there is a reason thousands of people voted for them: there is not a business like them. As for the upcoming Holiday, Rustic Buffalo has many surprises up their sleeves but will announce them em in out next issue of Home Magazine!

BUFFALO SILOS

Revitalized By Amanda Dudek

Revitalization is a crucial part of nature: the regrowth of forests after a fire, a green spring after the dead of winter. The City of Buffalo is no exception. Along the banks of the Buffalo River, the gargantuan bones of grain silos speak to the prosperity of a bygone era. After several decades, life is returning to these massive structures both at Silo City and the Silos at Elk Street. SILO CITY Rick Smith, thirdgeneration president of Rigidized Metals, first became interested in the Buffalo Outer Harbor property that is now Silo City because it neighbors Rigidized which was expanding. When he realized the property was available in 2006, he purchased it, in no small part for the Buffalo community, as well as to put the iconic silos in local hands once again. But what to do with 100-year-old grain silos over 190 feet tall? “I didn’t know what in the world we were going to do with them, but they are kind of the cornerstones of what Buffalo is,” explained Smith. “They are one of the things that are special and unique to Buffalo. They have authenticity. What would Buffalo be without these grain elevators?” Ultimately, Smith felt that Silo City should be a place of gathering, of art, a space in which to find inspiration and to create, bringing back the regenerative power of the human spirit. “We have to start by the water and get back to the water. Everything starts by the water,” he said, noting the silos themselves point to the waterfront. Artists of all kinds—painters, theatre performers, national-recognized spoken word poets, sculptors, installations by UB students (Elevator B beehive), musicians, and many others answered Silo City’s call. “All around are spaces, and artists have

Cove & Mill Barbering Co. Owner and Master Barber, Oral Roberts, took one look at the unfinished cove-like appearance of the Silos at Elk Street space and knew he had found the perfect location for his barbershop.

DOOR TO EVERYWHERE, SILO CITY

Once it was ready, Oral began creating his dream shop, enlisting the help of his wife Jeanine Roberts, Interior Designer with Young + Wright Architectural, to help bring his vision to life. They named the shop in honor of both Oral’s Caribbean heritage (Trinidad & Tobago) and the silos’ history: Cove (like a place for pirate’s treasure) and Mill (like the processing of barley). 50 ELK ST., SUITE 120 BUFFALO 716.625.COVE (2683)

started collaborating and doing mashups,” shared Smith. Even the name of Silo City bar, Duende, inspired by Garcia Lorca, means the magic of art. “Silo City is a catalyst instead of always wanting to be the artist; it is the place. That is what makes it special. We do not want to be the art; we just want to be the conduit.” Smith has spent over 15 years working on Silo City, from its unassuming entrance to its Riddle Sticks boundary sculpture. “You cannot take on a project this big right away,” he explained. “You have to eat slowly, digest, make sure you listen to the artists who come here, listen to the architects…feel which is the best direction.” Silo City’s direction would not be complete without recognizing its Native American (Haudenosaunee) heritage and healing the landscape. “This is Do Sho Ma, land for people,” Smith stated, explaining that Josh Smith, Director of Ecology, does a magnificent job of restoring native plants, making habitats for native animals, helping nature clean itself, and more. Many animals now call the property home, including a variety of birds. Silo City natural spaces like 44 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo

The Meadow and the Trellis are absolute triumphs. Today, Silo City is still growing. Everywhere, there are hidden “packageways” with artistic surprises and unexpected installations and structures, starting with a very Alice in Wonderland piece that Smith calls, “his only artistic contribution:” The Door to Everywhere. It embodies his hope that Silo City will be a very global place, also realized in Silo City’s soccer field for refugees. Work is underway to turn some silos into develop residential housing at Silo City as well as additional art spaces. “The fun is to get everyone down here,” Smith concluded. “This is everybody’s spot. We are really lucky to be able to do this.” THE SILOS AT ELK STREET Standing only a few minutes from the banks of the Buffalo River are the Silos at Elk Street, an historic malt house and multisilo structure. for about 30 years before it sparked local interest. Today, an award-winning design company, Young + Wright Architectural, is bringing new life, both to the structure as well as the business community. The first portion of the Elk Street malting house and silos was built just before the turn of the century in 1898 when Buffalo’s beer industry was booming. The malt house specifically oversaw the malting process for turning barley into malt which it then sold to local beer companies. Moving into the 20th century, the malthouse, then owned by F. A. Dole, added four round silos before it was sold. It then became the Kreiner Leher malt house in 1910. Kreiner Leher constructed an additional 6 square silos at a cost of what would be approximately $2.6 million today. The business was sold to the Buffalo Malting Company and ran from 1975 until 1986. In 2015, the now Silos at Elk St. were sold at auction and purchased by Shawn Wright and Jerry Young, Partners of Young + Wright Architectural. Rising to the challenge while getting the silos on the Historic Registry, Young & Wright created— and continue to create—modern, innovative spaces, not only for the firm’s offices but for others, as well. One such business, Cove & Mill Barbering Company, were quick to see the beautifully renovated space as an incredible opportunity.

business, he upholds the shop’s motto... “Great Place. Great people. One-of-a-kind experience.” And what a unique location it is for a small business. “We are in this beautiful building while providing these amazing services with authenticity. You get a historical experience when you come here, not just a haircut.”

These conversations are very relaxed as guests enjoy comfortable red captain’s chairs, calypso music, and exceptional service. Along with its “good vibes” and relaxed atmosphere, Cove & Mill draws people in with Oral’s high standards when it comes to his grooming services, which include both classic and modern haircuts, beard treatments and even facials. Realizing early in his career that traditional hours were not sufficient, Oral started staying open late. In fact, Cove & Mill THE SILOS AT ELK STREET is often open until 10PM. “We are open when other barbershops have already closed for the day.” As an entrepreneur and a minorityowned

The barbershop, owned and operated by Master Barber Oral Roberts, is ideally located, sitting at the corner of several Revitalization neighborhoods such as Larkinville, the Hydraulics Community, the Old First Ward, and the Valley. It is little wonder, then, that Cove & Mill attracts a very diverse crowd, something very important to Oral. “I am all about diversity,” he shared. “People sit in the chair and ask me questions they wouldn’t feel comfortable asking other
