THE SECRETS TO COLD WEATHER ENTERTAINING

Outdoor entertaining in winter may be challenging, especially in regard to keeping everyone warm. The following are some solutions that can help people stay warm and have fun outside.

• Fire pits can be great places for friends and family to gather around and enjoy special occasions. They’re readily availablefromgardencentersandhome improvement retailers at a variety of price points. Permanent fire pits can be built by a homeowner or professionally built by masonry experts.

• Outdoor fireplaces add warmth, and improve the ambiance and value of an outdoor entertaining area. Set up outdoor furniture right next to an outdoor fireplace and you have a cozy alternative living room.

• Outdoor heating devices are far more effective than average fire pits or fireplaces. One or two heaters will be enough to keep a large entertaining area warm.

• Guests should dress warmly, but having a basket of throw blankets, scarves and parkas available for extra warmth while mingling is helpful. Use outdoor rugs to insulate from the cold from the ground up.

• Stews, chilis, soups, and other hot foods can help guests warm themselves up from the inside out. Warmed cider, hotchocolateandmulledwinesalsocan be served to help people stay warm.

• Incorporate activities that encourage guests to move around and stay warm.

VALENTINE’S DAY • TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH HEADQUARTERS

LEARN HOW TO WRITE A CLASSIC LOVE LETTER

Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute.

In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away.

DID YOU KNOW?

Valentine’s Day symbols like heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, Cupid shooting his arrow and bouquets of roses are ubiquitous come February. Each of those symbolizes is meant to signify the love individuals have for their significant others, but perhaps no Valentine’s Day image is more symbolic of love than doves. According to LiveScience.com, doves have been a symbol of love since the Middle Ages, when many people believed birds chose their mates on Valentine’s Day. But the history of doves and their affiliation with love dates back even further and can be traced to the days of Greek mythology. Aphrodite is the goddess of love in Greek mythology, and she is often depicted as being surrounded by doves. Doves’ own traits also have helped them become symbols of love, as LiveScience.com notes that male doves help their female partners incubate and tend to their young, bolstering their image as caring, loving birds.

But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note.

• Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter.

• Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years.

• Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work.

• Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and makelovelettersmoremeaningful.Suchdetailsillustratetoasignificant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind.

• Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style.

Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day.

PAW’S CORNER

Crying in the Car Is Never a Good ing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My Border Collie, Sugar, gets very anxious during car rides. She is not one of those dogs who likes to stick their head out of the window! Instead, she whimpers, cries, drools and paces around on the back seat. I’m very worried that she’ll try to jump into my lap. How can I stop her crying? -- Wendy G., Atlanta

DEAR WENDY: Poor Sugar! Anxiety in pets is o en tied to a distressing experience in their past. And her uncontrolled movement around the car is a safety issue.

Talk to Sugar’s veterinarian about her behavior. ey can provide advice and help determine if and when anti-anxiety medication should be given.

Adding a pet restraint system (like a doggie seat or seat belt) or kennel cage will keep Sugar from sliding around in the car and may help her feel more secure.

Next, help reduce Sugar’s anxiety by helping her associate car rides with good things. is will take a little extra time and e ort each day, but it’s worth it.

-- With the car parked in the driveway, sit in the back seat with Sugar (in her seat or cage) for about ve minutes. Give her a small treat and lots of praise when she does. Do this daily, without driving anywhere.

-- When Sugar regularly stays calm, shi to the driver’s seat a er sitting with her in the back seat.

-- Step up to the next level: Turn on the car, giving Sugar a treat when you do so. Put soothing music on the radio.

A trainer can be a good investment, as well. ey’ll work with Sugar (and o en the vet) to make her car rides bearable, and maybe even enjoyable.

How does your pet stand car rides? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner. com.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.

Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Hi! My name is Levi. I am a very good pup, yes! I like to spend time with mama and papa, but also my kitty brother. My favorite things to do are, um, to sit, to play, to eat kibble, go on walkies, and poo on the lawn and make mama and papa pick it up. I love them so very much. The end.

There are different types of depression. A person may have a single bout of major depression or recurring episodes. Depression that lasts two or more years is called persistent depressive disorder. A less common type of depression is called manic-depressive illness. This involves cycles of depression that alternate with extreme highs, or manias.

DID YOU KNOW?

Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

Case of Hot Flashes Yet to Be Resolved Despite Therapy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78; I had a hysterectomy in 1976 due to excessive vaginal bleeding, but I still have my ovaries. I have had hot flashes since undergoing menopause -- they usually last three to five minutes, and I have them about every two hours around the clock (which obviously interferes with my sleep).

Over the last 28 years, I have tried Premarin (which gave me bad headaches), gabapentin, venlafaxine, Bellergal, melatonin, black cohosh, clonidine, DHEA, Pro-Gest cream (chamomile, hops and valerian root), progesterone and estrogen (together), avoiding caffeine, and eliminating dairy products. None of these have helped. I would appreciate it if you could offer any suggestions.

ANSWER: I’m sorry to hear of your difficulties. You have certainly tried about all the available therapies. There are two additional ones you might want to consider: Megesterol is a hormonal therapy that is helpful for some women, but the fact that you haven’t responded to estrogens and progestins is not promising. The other is called a stellate ganglion block. You can ask your physician about it. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: After a patient has had megadoses of IV and oral antibiotics, is there anything they should do to restore the balance in their body, such as eating probiotics or yogurt? Or is that all nonsense? -- N.W.

ANSWER: The idea makes perfect sense: Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria that is infecting us, they also kill many of the healthy bacteria that help us with digestion and other functions. (The whole suite of healthy bacteria living in our gut is termed the “microbiome.”) Why not help the gut return to normal by giving it some healthy bacteria, such as those found in yogurt with live cultures, or specific probiotics, which are just the healthy bacteria?

The answer is that it has been very hard to prove that there is any benefit in doing so. In people with no symptoms after finishing an antibiotic course, there probably aren’t any benefits.

At least one study showed what researchers called a “very severe disturbance” in the person’s microbiome and actually slowed the return to a person’s normal microbiome, which they had prior to antibiotics. Worse still, very rarely, infections have been transmitted through probiotics.

Symptoms after antibiotic therapy, especially diarrhea and fever, could indicate a very severe infection called Clostridioides difficile (“C. diff”), which does not respond to probiotics and usually needs powerful antibiotics to treat. Probiotics have not been found to prevent C. diff.

A Great Teacher

Kudos and thanks to Sara at the Livonia Public Library for using her computer skills to help patrons do what they need to do on the computer. A lot of people come in to the library needing to do this or that but don’t have the ability to do so. Sara is always willing to help and if she is unsure about how to do something, she will play around until she gets a resolution. In this day and age, a lot can be done on the computer but folks don’t always know how to do it and it is hard for some of us to learn it. Having Sara to instruct and guide us is invaluable. We deeply appreciate the time she takes to help.

The Genesee Valley Conservancy deals with many environmental issues, both long-term and shortterm. From creating natural wild re areas that residents can enjoy for many generations, to ensuring walking trails in the preserves are clean and relatively mudfree, the Genesee Valley Conservancy protects land in the Genesee River Watershed and helps provide a long-term plan to keep the Watershed viable for many years to come. ese goals are part of the conservancy’s strategic plan. One of the more important aspects of the Genesee Valley Conservancy is that they protect around 27,600 acres in the watershed, primarily in Livingston and Steuben Counties. For example, the Genesee Valley Conservancy owns and protects the Railroad Bed Trail in Avon, the Island Fort and Island Preserves in Geneseo, and the Mill Creek Nature Preserve and Gully Preserve in Wayland. e Conservancy also runs the Genesee Valley Blueway, a 165-mile kayak path along the Genesee River running from Rochester to the New York State line.

ere are two primary ways the Conservancy acquires land for its preserves. A private landowner may give land to the conservancy for preservation or the conservancy pools money together to buy land outright from the landowner.

e conservancy uses di erent methods to maintain the preserves and keep them safe for everyone to use. A signi cant preservation method the conservancy uses is invasive species removal. is prevents one singular plant from overtaking the entire preserve and allows other noninvasive plants to grow and thrive in the preserve. One invasive species terrorizing ash trees in the conservancy and most of the Genesee Valley region over the past few years is the emerald ash borer. e Conservancy mitigates ash borer invasion within the preserve by having a tree inspector walk around the forest o en to identify trees impacted by the ash borer.

Other invasive species the Conservancy deals with are the honeysuckle, the giant hogweed, buckthorn, the multi- oral rose, and the Asian long-horned beetle.

e Conservancy uses many of the same methods used on the ash borer to deal with these invasive species.

e Genesee Valley Conservancy helps support land protection e orts through fundraising events throughout the year, such as the Oak Tree Race in Geneseo each September, the Genesee Valley Quiz Night each July, and the Genesee Valley 100, a year-round art exhibit, yet to begin for 2023.

Ben Gajewski, Executive Director of the Conservancy, said the organization does not have concrete plans for the upcoming year. Gajewski said the Conservancy will maintain their preserves and keep them strong so generations to come may enjoy them, a goal the Conservancy strives for every year.

Gajewski also said the Conservancy does not have speci c plans to acquire new lands in 2023, but they will eagerly hear any proposals that come up.

Most of the Conservancy’s decisions are made through Gajewski and a 22-member board of local community members interested in conservation. e Conservancy has six full-time positions: Gajewski, Matt Halladay, the Land Conservationist; Molly Cassatt, Stewardship Director; Kim Wells, Organizational Assistant; Jim Mott, Stewardship Coordinator, and Marcia Koch, the accountant.

People may support the Conservancy through individual or monthly donations through the Conservancy’s website: www.geneseevalleyconservancy.org. ey seek help in the eld, such as mowing, painting, trail cleaning, planting, and invasive species removal. ey also seek volunteers in the o ce, such as by creating newsletters, planning and running events, mailing, lead nature walks, and other professional services like surveyors, lawyers, and accountants.

Charge your phone. If a night out involves hanging out in an unfamiliar location or meeting new people, then be sure that your mobile phone is fully charged and you check in with trusted emergency contacts throughout the night.

Ways to Train Your Brain

ere are several “brain support” online programs out there, but many cost more than we’d like to pay.

Lumosity (lumosity.com) comes in seven languages and has games that promote memory, attention, exibility, problem-solving and more. A er you sign up, you’ll get three free games per day, and the Brain Performance Index monitors your progress. ere is a subscription plan, of course, if you want access to more areas of the site, and you can pay by the month or the year. Test the free version rst to see if you like it.

BrainHQ (brainhq.com) is another cognitive training program that you can access online. eir exercises explore brain speed, memory, attention and more. And you can design your own program. eir goals are to help you think faster, focus better and remember more. You can try it out by subscribing to their email newsletters, which have free daily exercises to sample.

As for me, I’ve found books that don’t cost much and are good at putting my brain through its paces on a daily basis. e New York Times series of puzzle books begins with the Monday editions, which are the easiest of the week. ( e crossword puzzles get increasingly di cult as the week progresses.) I found the whole series of spiral-bound puzzle books (50 to a book) on Amazon.

en there are the online jigsaw puzzles at eJigsawPuzzles.com. e puzzles (a new one every day) can be set in any number of ways, including the number of pieces in a puzzle. I’ve found that the 100-pieces level is plenty challenging when viewed on a computer monitor.

And then there is online chess, for those of us who used to play back in the day but would be embarrassed to lose to a small child now without serious brushing up of our skills. Try this for free at www.chess.com and play against their computer.

THE TYPE OF LODGING ACCOMMODATION

Hotel: Hotels cater to people who will be staying a few nights. They often feature spacious lobbies and some amenities, such as swimming pools or exercise rooms. Some hotels have restaurants attached to them. Hotels are among the most popular accommodations. According to the travel resource Dauntless Jaunter, hotels are categorized according to a “star” rating system.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* To store asparagus, trim the ends and wrap them in a few paper towels that you have dampened. Keep it in the fridge for two days max. This will keep it very fresh and tasty.

* “To stretch your food dollar -- especially now that the weather is colder, and soups and stews are daily fare -- substitute peas, beans and lentils for meats whenever possible. Not only will this semivegetarian diet keep your food dollars down, it will make you healthier and it’s a more ecofriendly diet.” -- K.F. in Connecticut

* If you add dried fruit or raisins to your batter for cakes or muffins, roll them or shake them in flour first. This will prevent them from sinking down to the bottom of the pan.

* Bathroom fan reminder: When you leave your bathroom fan running excessively, you are pumping heat out of your house. Set a timer for 10 minutes maximum, and then turn it off.

* “Old pantyhose can be washed and cut up to use as stuffing for a toy. The same is true for other light materials. This can be a good way to get one more use out of something rather than putting it in the trash bin.” -- P.L. in Pennsylvania

* If your bathtub has a grainy or rough texture, try soaking the bath in vinegar, either by adding a large bottle to some water and plugging it up, or by laying down a towel and soaking it in vinegar. Scrub and remove.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Neil Andrew Baverstock

January 27, 2023

Wayland – Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire, UK: Neil Andrew Baverstock, 53 years of age, passed away Friday afternoon, January 27, 2023 at Highland Hospital after a long illness.

Neil was born October 31, 1969, the son of Anthony and Margaret (Bell) Baverstock. Neil and Laurie Morsch were married October 13, 2005 in Hudders eld, West Yorkshire, UK.

Neil’s education was proli c and his lifelong love of learning endless. He attended the prestigious Mill eld School in Somerset, England from the ages of 16-18 on an academic and sports scholarship for football (soccer) and cricket. He then attended Phillips Academy, Andover, MA on scholarship from Harvard University. In 1988 he attended the University of Leeds to study Astro Physics. Neil was scouted and o ered a full scholarship to attend the University of Hartford, CT where he received a Master’s Degree in Economics from the Barney School of Business and Public Administration. He then brie y undertook law studies in Los Angeles. His employment career was centered around data analytics in the international arena and was cut short due to his ongoing health problems.

Neil’s love of sports and his accomplishments were astounding as well. He opened the batting for Yorkshire boys at under 15 (the equivalent of being selected as quarterback for the Bu alo Bills). While at Mill eld School he won the All England Football (soccer) National Schools Championship and also played in their First Eleven Cricket Team. He captained Hudders eld Town School Boys both as a goalkeeper and center forward. He played soccer (football) at the University of Hartford, winning the 1991 and 1992 North Atlantic Conference Championship and played in the Sweet 16 round of the 1991 NCAA Men’s College SoccerTournament. He loved his hometown Football Club,Hudders eld Town – one of only 4 teams to have won the English Premiership of Old Division I, 3 years running. e other being Liverpool, Manchester

United and Arsenal. Another accomplishment for Neil was running in the 2010 London Marathon.

Neil’s other hobbies included reading and writing. He authored a book titled “Back in the Game” – the chronicles of one lapsed football fan’s (soccer) return to life and the “Game”in England after a decade of living in the land of soccer. He also wrote many poems, ction and non- ction pieces. He loved coaching youth soccer in both Wayland and Naples, passing on his lifelong love of soccer (football) to others. He would shovel his backyard and put ood lights up so his son could practice year-round! Golf was also favorite of his, both in playing and then watching as his ill health progressed.

Neil’s zest for learning and sports made him competitive. He did not like games of chance because of the lack of skill and knowledge needed. A defeat at Jeopardy was unheard of against Neil nor was a goal scored against him a common feat!

Neil was predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, Carl and Lee Morsch. He is survived by wife, Laurie Baverstock of Wayland; his son, George of Wayland; his parents, Anthony Alderson Baverstock and Margaret Patricia Baverstock of Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire; his brother, Paul Baverstock (Justin Kitson) of Harrogate, North Yorkshire and his sister,Debra Baverstock of Slaithwaite,West Yorkshire; his nieces,Cecilia and Olivia Baverstock; along with brothers and sisters-in-law; and other nieces and nephews within his extended family here in the United States. Neil’s family and friends are invited to his funeral service at 11am Saturday at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Immediately following the funeral service Neil’s celebration will continue with food and fellowship at Palmer’s Last Stop on Main St., Wayland. Contributions in memory of Neil A. Baverstock may be made to Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572.

Neil’s funeral service will be livestreamed and the link will be available Friday evening.

EXPLORE HOSPICE OPTIONS FOR END-OF-LIFE CARE

Hospice care often begins when the individual receiving care and his or her family members feel the end of life may be near. According to Relias, a healthcare advisory organization, most patients enter hospice during the last six months of life. Care providers are interdisciplinary. Doctors, nurses, social service providers, bereavement therapists, dietitians, spiritual counselors, and physical or occupational therapists may be included in hospice treatment.

He was a longtime member of the Daniel Goho American Legion Post #86, with more than seventy continuous years of membership. He was also a member of the local VFW. It was his honor to serve his country and his service was acknowledged when he was a guest of Rochester Honor Flight #36 to Washington, DC.

He continued to work several more years at the Expressway Auto Auction in Dansville. Since retirement, Deke volunteered once a week at the Glenn H Curtiss museum in Hammondsport, NY.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK

People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

SIMPLE WAYS TO BE MORE CHARITABLE

Being charitable is rewarding, not only to those on the receiving end of others’ good deeds but also for those doing the giving.

ResearchconductedbytheNationalInstitutesofHealthfoundparticipants who chose to donate a portion of money they were provided activated pleasure centers in the brain. Doing something positive can be uplifting, and being charitable helps others in need.

Quite often people who engage in charitable works find inspiration through their efforts. That’s because working with a nonprofit group can create opportunities to meet new people, socialize and be surrounded with like-minded individuals. It also may help adults serve as role models to youngsters. Children who see their parents or other adults being charitable may be more likely to be philanthropic when they grow up. Every little bit counts when being charitable. Philanthropy doesn’t mean donating thousands of dollars or lots of hours volunteering. The following are some relatively easy ways to incorporate charity into one’s life.

• Collect change: Place a coin jar near where you put your keys or wallet when entering the house. Empty loose change into the jar and watch it fill up. Use the collected funds to donate to a charitable group.

• Round up: When the grocery store checkout clerk asks if you want to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar for charity, opt in.

• Become a leader: Volunteer your time as a scout troop leader, coach a sports team or offer free tutoring for students. You’ll be making an immediate difference in the lives of young people.

• Charitable consumption: Buy from companies that are involved with cause-related products. Many products are tied to charitable efforts, with a portion of money going directly to nonprofits.

• Throw a party: Host a party with a philanthropic theme. Guests can arrive and make a donation or bring a gift that will go to a charitable cause.

• Use your hobby: Participate in charity fundraisers that incorporate some of your favorite hobbies. For those who knit or craft, donate or sell your creations for the good of those in need. Being charitable is easier than one might think, and even the smallest efforts can produce big results.
