Cat’s frequent vomiting a cause for concern

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 10-year-old shorthaired cat Vic has always had a sensitive stomach. About once a week, he would vomit right a er eating. However, in the past couple of weeks, he has vomited every other day, at least. I feed him a canned food for senior pets along with a handful of dry kibble each day. Changing the type of food doesn’t seem to help. Is it time to call the vet?

DEAR CAROLYN: I think your instinct is right on. A sudden change in a pet’s daily patterns o en indicates that something is going on. Contact the veterinarian, who will schedule Vic for an exam within a couple of days. ey will look for possible signs of illness or injury.

It’s possible that nothing will turn up on the exam. at’s good, because it rules out more serious issues. But the vet will have you be more observant than usual and look for additional symptoms like lethargy, insistent meowing or continued frequent vomiting. ey’ll also have you monitor his water intake to make sure he’s not getting dehydrated.

ey will also probably recommend an entirely di erent brand of wet cat food, or even a prescription food on a temporary basis. is ensures that Vic continues getting the nutrition a senior cat needs.

ink about any changes to Vic’s environment that took place recently. Did you bring a new pet into the home, or a new person? Was a room redecorated? Did you travel for a few days? Anxiety can cause noticeable changes in a pet’s behavior. Also, were any potential toxins introduced, such as a pest control treatment or a new carpet installation? Write down any possibilities.

CHIPOTLE CHICKEN AND BEAN QUINOA SALAD CUPS WITH CILANTRO LIME VINAIGRETTE

Prep time: 25 minutes

Servings: 4

1 can (15 ounces) READ 3 or 4 Bean Salad

Dressing:

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice

1 tablespoon adobo sauce

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

1/8 teaspoon black pepper

3 tablespoons olive oil

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro

1 1/2 cups cooked quinoa

1 cup diced chicken, cooked

1/4 cup finely sliced green onions

1 chipotle pepper, minced

4 leaves Bibb lettuce

Drain bean salad; reserve 2 tablespoons liquid.

To make dressing: In small bowl, whisk reserved liquid, lime juice, adobo sauce, mustard, salt and pepper. Whisk in oil until completely combined. Stir in cilantro; set aside.

In medium bowl, combine bean salad, quinoa, chicken, onions and chipotle pepper. Add dressing; toss gently.

Divide bean salad mixture equally among lettuce cups.

Heart Attacks Occur After Treatment of Infections

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mom had a throat and palate infection that was treated in 2017, and about two weeks later, she had a heart attack. In 2023, she had pneumonia, and was briefly hospitalized and treated, but again about two weeks later, she had another heart attack. We asked her cardiologist if there is a relationship between either the infections themselves or the treatment of infections and heart attacks, but he was not aware of any. This seems too unlikely to be a coincidence. What is your experience on this? -- A.C.S.

ANSWER: A heart attack happens when the demand for blood from the heart is greater than the ability of the blood vessels can provide. In practice, this almost always means that there are blockages in the blood vessels. However, an increase in the workload of the heart, such as strenuous exercise or an infection (fever tends to increase heart rate, and the blood flow from the heart usually increases with serious infection), can be what leads a person to have a heart attack. It’s possible that this is what happened with your mom. The timing of two weeks after the event is longer than expected, but it’s possible. Whether from chronic infection or inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation in the blood increases the risk of heart disease in the long term, so if there is a connection, and it’s not just coincidental, that would be the most likely cause. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote about the dangers of testosterone replacement in men over 70 in your column a few months ago. Could you please describe the dangers of this again?

My husband is 73 and injects testosterone every 10 days or so. He’s not feeling too well overall, but he doesn’t know why. He’s been to the cardiologist, but the studies came back fine. He says he feels nerves in his stomach and a bit of shortness of breath. He’s also tired and without much energy. -- E.D.

ANSWER: There are clear dangers with excess testosterone use, especially in older men. Some men use very high doses of testosterone or other androgens for muscle building, and this can cause heart damage, blood clots and stroke. I strongly do not recommend doing this, but it is generally used illicitly. By contrast, for men in whom testosterone therapy is given appropriately, the dangers are quite small, and in most men, the benefits outweigh the risks. Men should have a clear reason to receive testosterone therapy, such as having low bone density, low libido, loss of body hair, or development of breast tissue, in addition to repeatedly low testosterone levels (including a level taken between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. when testosterone levels are highest). In these men, the goal is to stabilize the testosterone level, and the risks of the catastrophic outcomes listed above appear to be very small, or even zero. Testosterone levels should also be measured during therapy. I can’t speculate on the cause behind your husband’s symptoms. Nonspecific symptoms, such as low energy, can be caused by low testosterone, but unless there are more specific symptoms of low testosterone, I generally do not recommend testosterone replacement.

Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

Narrow the gap between indoor and outdoor temperatures. The DOE notes that the smaller the difference between the temperature indoors and outside the lower cooling costs will be. While it may be tempting to set thermostats to room temperature (68 F) on days when temperatures reach 90 F or above, that’s an enormous temperature gap that will result in a high energy bill. Instead, the DOE recommends setting thermostats to 78 F whenever possible.

Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents. Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector. The National Vital Statistics System says that, in 2015, 393 deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen.

Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible. With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur.

Serves 6

1 cake compressed yeast, 1 packet active dry yeast or 1 packet quick-rising yeast

A pinch of sugar

1 cup warm water

4 1/4 cups Italian “00” flour or cake flour

2 egg yolks

2 tablespoons olive oil

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1 tablespoons butter, softened 1/2 cup brown sugar, plus extra to sprinkle

Finely grated peel of 1 unwaxed lemon

3/4 cup walnuts, chopped 8 ounces black grapes, seeded (Sangiovese wine grapes, if possible)

2 cups heavy cream or mascarpone

3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar

6 tablespoons Vin Santo

1 jelly roll pan, 9 x 13 inches, oiled

Ifyouareusingcompressedyeast, mix it with the sugar in a medium bowl, then beat in the warm water. Leave for 10 minutes until frothy. For other yeasts, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Sift the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture, egg yolks, olive oil, and salt. Mix until the dough comes together. Tip out onto a lightly floured work surface. Wash and dry your hands. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. It should be quite soft, but if it’s too soft to handle, add more flour. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel, and let rise until doubled in size - about 1 hour.

To make the walnut butter, cream the butter and sugar together, then stir in the lemon peel and walnuts. Keep at room temperature.

Uncover the dough, punch out the air, then shape into a ball. Roll or pull the dough into a rectangle to line the prepared jelly roll pan. Spread the walnut butter over the schiacciata crust, add the grapes, and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel and let rise for 1 hour until puffy and doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Uncover the dough and bake for 15 minutes. Turn the oven down to 350 F and bake for 20 minutes more or until risen and golden. Let cool slightly before turning out.

To make the Vin Santo cream, beat the cream, confectioners’ sugar and Vin Santo together in a bowl until the mixture forms soft peaks. Cut the focaccia into wedges and serve with the Vin Santo cream.

Lisa (LaMonica) Wilson,age 38 of Wayland,passed away peacefully from her ongoing battle with cancer on Sunday, July 30, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was welcomed into Heaven by her grandparents, aunts and uncles and is survived by her loving husband,Anthony,and their three beloved children, Anthony, Isabella, and Madeline; parents, Samuel and Cindy LaMonica; Mother-in-law, Sheila Wilbert; sisters, Sara LaMonica and Samantha LaMonica; grandparents, Jim and Jeannean LaMonica; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Lisa originated from Ontario, NY and graduated from Wayne Central in 2003. She moved to Wayland, NY with her family where she was an active member of the community and worked for the local school district. Friends and family called from 4-8pm on ursday, August 3, 2023 at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home in Wayland. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11am on Friday, August 4, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wayland. Burial was in Village Cemetery, Wayland. In lieu of owers, memorial contributions can be made for Lisa’s family to the funeral home, PO Box 336, Wayland, NY 14572.

James W. Van Der Meid July 17, 2023

Wayland/Livonia – James W. Van Der Meid, 73 years of age, passed away at Rochester General Hospital Monday, July 17, 2023.

Jim was born December 28, 1949 in Rochester, the son of William and Shirley (Drain) Van Der Meid. He grew up in Livonia and was a Livonia resident until the late 1990s. On June 3, 2000 Jim and Shirley Ellis were married and celebrated over 23 years together.

Jim’s entrepreneurial career spanned a few di erent areas. He enjoyed success early on in the family dairy equipment business at Van Der Meid Dairy Equipment in Livonia, building homes for several years, partners in the Car Corral used car business,owner of Wayland Family Auto Center and nally retiring as a distributor/franchise owner for Mac Tools. Jim also served in United States National Guard. His hobbies included part of his career work: building and remodeling houses and xing cars. Wintering in Myrtle Beach was a lifelong dream he and Shirley accomplished; his garage was his man cave!; and his favorites were Diet Pepsi and chocolate chip cookies.

Jim was pre-deceased by his parents, William and Shirley Van Der Meid; and his father-in-law, Donald Ellis. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Shirley Van Der Meid of Wayland; his son, Michael (Kristine) Van Der Meid of Livonia; his daughter, Nicole Van Der Meid of Pittsford; his grandchildren, Samantha Morris and Mikayla Van Der Meid; his sister, Lynda Robinson of Lyons; his motherin-law, Lucille Ellis of Wayland; his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Lawrence Kirkum of Wayland, Donna and Mike Parks of Wayland, Gary and Barb Ellis of Wayland, Donald and Ellen Ellis of Wayland, Cameron Ellis of Wayland and Stacy Ellis (Joe Marmo) of Irondequoit; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A BEACON THROUGH TIME: Visit Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse for National Lighthouse Day

In honor of Lighthouse Day, August 7th, let’s shine a light on a Rochester landmark and national treasure: the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse, America’s oldest surviving lighthouse on Lake Ontario.

ere is a long history behind this lighthouse we may overlook. According to lighthousefriends.org, President Je erson declared in 1804 that the 70-mile stretch along the southern shore of Lake Ontario from Oak Orchard to Sodus Bay, would become a port district centered at the Genesee River and the lake. Rochester, which had access to three waterfalls, became a vital our-milling center six miles south of the port and Charlotte.

Torches on large pilot trees or lamps atop the region’s rst hotels used to guide ships entering the port. However, with the sandbars on the marshy river entrance, entry to the river proved challenging for ships. Along with land development to help ship tra c, lighting options were discussed.

A four-acre plot of land was purchased by recently widowed Mehitabel Hincher for $400 in 1821 for the construction of a lighthouse. e lighthouse contract, including a tower, a 20x34 foot two-room keeper’s cottage, and a well, was awarded to Ashbel Symons in 1822, and Symon’s construction team took seven months to complete it at a cost of $3,301. Improvements have been made to the lighthouse and keeper’s house over the years, including a rotating lens to distinguish its light from nearby beacons for mariners in 1852, and electri cation in 1917.

e United States eventually sold the lighthouse and home in 1981, and Monroe County purchased them. In 1984, students from a local high school constructed the lighthouse’s top we see today. e Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society was founded in 1983 to preserve and maintain the tower (1822), the Keeper’s House (1863), and the historic acreage as an educational center, open to the public, where residents and visitors can learn the history of the City of Rochester’s maritime heritage.

e US Coast Guard retrieved the fourth-order Fresnel lens the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse had borrowed in 2011 to send to go on display in Black River Landing’s lobby of the Lorain Port Authority because the lens previously served at Lorain Lighthouse in Ohio. Using funds provided by an anonymous donor, Artworks Florida ordered a replica Fresnel for Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse. To repair the brick collar that supported the lantern room, it was removed before the new xed fourthorder lens was installed. About six weeks later, the lantern room was hoisted back atop the lighthouse on September 25, 2014.

Lighting in the lamp room today is a recreation of what was once inside the lighthouse. e Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse is now an o cial Coast Guard lighthouse. e Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse has stood as a guardian of Lake Ontario for centuries. From its humble beginnings in the early 19th century to its enduring presence as a historic icon, the lighthouse has witnessed the evolution of maritime navigation and the changing tides of history. Today, it remains a symbol of perseverance, guiding both ships and admirers through the annals of time. Visitors can enjoy amazing views from the top of the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse throughout the season, though it is notable that the spiral staircase within the lighthouse is tight. Visits to the lighthouse start in the museum located in what was the Keeper’s House. e museum showcases exhibits on lighthouses, Charlotte’s history, as well as maritime travels and trade. I hear garlic is easy to grow around here. Do you have any tips for success?

Those who grow ‘their own’ know that homegrown produce tastes better than those bought at supermarket. This is also true for garlic! Garlic is one of the easiest vegetables to grow if a few critical requirements such as good soil, sufficient moisture, and correct planting and harvesting time are met.

This year’s spring was dry and irrigating the garlic helped greatly to keep it healthy while sizing up the bulbs. The leaf mold mulch we used kept the moisture in until the rains began in June. Coming July, it’s time to harvest your garlic crop!

There are two main types of garlic:

hardneck and softneck. Hardnecks form fewer but bigger cloves located around a hard central stem. The stem develops a curling top called a scape. Softneck garlic forms a higher number of cloves, the bigger ones are on the outside and smaller ones on the inside of the bulb.

Softnecks tend to mature a week earlier than hardnecks. If you are growing Softneck Garlic, you need to look and see that at least 50% of it has fallen over and is laying on the ground. Then you know that your softneck garlic is ready to harvest.

Hardneck is usually ready in mid–July. Pull a few plants every few days and cut

a cross section of the bulb. Once you see space forming between the cloves and the central stem, your garlic is ready for harvest.
