Why the U.S. Ban on Dog Imports?
Auctions & Antiques _____________________11
FOR SALE
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been working for months to purchase a purebred dog located in Ukraine. Today, the transaction was put on hold by the breeder, who said that dog imports are being banned by the U.S. What is going on? -- Nadiya in NYC
Automotive _____________________8 Body & Mind ____________________12
DEAR NADIYA: What happened is that dogs are being imported into the U.S. with rabies certificates that are fraudulent. After at least 450 imported dogs were found to have fake certificates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took action in June and temporarily banned the import of dogs from more than 100 countries* with a high rabies risk, including Ukraine, for at least one year. According to the CDC’s official notice, in 2020 it identified a significant increase in the number of imported dogs that were denied entry into the U.S. from high-risk countries. Due to reduced flight schedules, dogs denied entry are facing longer wait times to be returned to their country of departure, leading to illness and even death. Why did the number of fraudulent rabies certificates rise so quickly? In a word, the pandemic. During lockdown, demand for dogs (and cats) soared. Worried about the risk of animals being abandoned when their owners went back to the office, many shelters drastically raised fees and other requirements for adoption. Demand for imported dogs rose. Unfortunately, there are no options for those who intend to purchase or adopt a dog from one of these countries. If you try to import the dog anyway, or even hand-carry it across the border, it will be denied entry and shipped back home at your expense. It’s a bummer, but necessary to reduce the risk of rabies spreading in the U.S. *For a map showing banned countries, go to www.statista.com and search for “CDC bans dog imports.” To read the official notice, go to www.cdc.gov and search for “high-risk dog ban.”

Oh, the summer night Has a smile of light And she sits on a sapphire throne. ~Barry Cornwall
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Improper seasoning: Basting food with sugar-laden sauces and marinades too early can cause flare-ups and burning. Quick rubs can help lock in flavor, and then reserve the sauce for the last few minutes of grilling, says cookbook author Dave Martin.
EXPERT ADVICE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND GRADS “Sitting in a classroom is the easiest part of college and it cuts study time in half. Why make it hard on yourself? GO!” - Senior, University of Iowa
* Keep a pretty basket by your front door for anything you need to take along when you leave. This can be store returns, backpacks, exercise gear for the gym, your sunglasses, whatever. When you leave the house, check the basket! * “Necklaces can be stored together without tangling if you thread each one through a straw. You can cut the straw to a shorter length for choker-length necklaces or bracelets. No knots!” -- I.A. in Arizona * If you have a little bit of touchup paint left in your gallon can, transfer it to a mason jar. Write the exact color and brand on the lid, and it will be much easier to store. * “Our basement was dark and a little claustrophobic. My husband painted it a lovely sunny yellow and that helped, but it needed something else. I took a photo of the spectacular view at our son’s house in Montana, and had the photo blown up. We mounted it on the wall with some dummy curtains! It’s perfect, and it reminds me of him.” -- R.W. in New York * Need to chill a bottle of wine quickly? Wet a kitchen towel, then wrap it around the wine. Twist the ends to secure, and put the whole thing in the freezer for 30 minutes. * Great ways to remove stuck labels: nail polish remover (NOT for use on plastics), WD-40 oil, soaking in hot water, rubbing alcohol. Valley Fuel makes generous donation in support of area Veterans! (l-r) Lynn Reagle, Bill LaVallee, Bob Banfield, and Kevin Mark
Valley Fuel Gives Generously to Support Local Veterans BY AMANDA DUDEK
W
hen Bill LaVallee became the owner of Valley Propane & Fuels in 2013, he also inherited a legacy of patriotic giving, something he is only too happy to continue. For approximately 12 years, Valley Propane & Fuels has donated funds to Veterans through the American Legion. This year, LaVallee spread the funds even further.
Wall inside our Legion which lists all of the members who died in active duty from WWI to the present.” The Immortal Wall can be viewed whenever the Legion is open.
On July 15th, Bill LaVallee gathered in front of its Warrior Truck with Lynn Reagle, Commander of the Dansville American Legion; Kevin Mark, Commander of the Wayland American Legion; and Veteran employee, Bob Banfield, U. S. Coast Guard (1969-1973), to present each Legion with a check for $1,000 respectively. LaVallee also donated $1,000 this year to the Bath VA Rehabilitation and Addiction Program at the Bath Veterans Hospital. For Mark and Reagle, their appreciation cannot be overstated, particularly in light of the increased need they saw during the pandemic. “It is hard to express in words the caring and support Valley Fuel gives to the Veterans,” stated Reagle. “They are not afraid to put their name behind supporting our Veterans, and to someone like myself whose entire family is military, that means so much.” “Valley Fuel has continued to donate for years, and we have been able to do so much for our Veterans with those funds,” said Mark. “Continuing this legacy shows their commitment to our communities,” adding he hopes area neighbors will see the company’s generosity. “This is 100% patriotism and Americanism right here.” Banfield concurred. “This is important. It shows patriotism, concern for our country, and appreciation for our Veterans and the sacrifices they made, big or small,” he added, standing against the well-known Valley Fuel Warrior Truck. When asked if there are any plans to replace the vehicle which has become a symbol of the company’s patriotism and support of Veterans, he replied, “We just put a new engine in it!” “We will baby our Warrior Truck and keep it running as long as we can,” said LaVallee. “Our employees take pride in it, painting it and touching it up as needed.” It is clear the truck, which frequently participates in events and parades, is not retiring any time soon. Meanwhile, both Legion Commanders have worthy goals for the donation funds. Reagle plans to continue some of the Dansville Legion’s current projects. “We have an immortal fund which takes care of the park down by the football field, which honors everyone who has joined,” he shared. “We also just finished our Immortal

Reagle also added his intention to fund Project Christmas, another cause to which Valley Fuel frequently donates. “We served 104 local children last year,” he said. “During COVID, we supported a lot of people who needed assistance.” Mark confirmed seeing an increased need and a resolve to help. “Quite a few years ago, we started our own Veterans Aid chapter,” he explained. “We keep funds available here for local Veterans in need, whether that need arises from tragedy such as a housefire or the pressures of life like an overwhelming bill.” “Valley Fuel does an awesome job for us, and they give a discount to Veterans, so we try to keep their donated funds local for our men and women right here” Mark continued. “That is why I brought the flag today because that is what we are here for: to make certain this money goes to our Veterans where they really need it.” LaVallee, also a Legion member, says Valley Fuel will continue to donate to Veterans through the American Legion, commending Commander Kevin Mark for his efforts. “The hard work, dedication, and everything he puts into the Wayland post is very impressive to me,” said LaVallee while also recognizing the outstanding work of Commander Lynn Reagle. “This is a noble cause, and we are going to continue to give back to our Veterans.”

Summer fun that is close to home Summer concert series: Summer concerts series typically begin when the weather warms up, and music may not stop playing until Labor Day. Concerts may range from more intimate affairs that attract a few dozen people to a town square to larger events at beaches and boardwalks that draw thousands of visitors.

Bravo, Teachers! I would like to recognize Alexander CSD teachers, essential staffing and all employees for the amazing job done during a challenging and uncertain school year resulting from COVID. Without your dedication and flexibility, our children would have suffered. Your efforts do not go unrecognized by the community. Thank you for all you do for the children! E. W.
Regarding a recently published article regarding proper display of the flag— I have some additional information to add to that. The flag should not be displayed at night unless lighted, nor should it be displayed during “inclement weather.” The flag should be properly disposed of when damaged or worn out (contact your Legion for details). The entire code is available on the American Legion website. Also, no drawings should be done on the US flag. This, to me, includes the superimposing of various images, animals, sports insignia, human portraits, etc. Also, personally, the use of the flag as a political statement and changing the colors on the flag is disrespectful. This is not the flag for which millions have made the ultimate sacrifice. If one wishes to show support for another organization, all of them have insignia that could be displayed on a plain banner.
Petty Rant Shame on you for your rant against our law enforcement officers. Those parking laws are in place in case of a fire or terrorism incident, and it doesn’t matter if the building is vacant. Do you think our police officers can choose which laws to enforce and when to enforce them? It’s all about public safety. Be a good citizen and follow the rules.
Neighbor’s Noisy Truck In the [local] area we have a neighbor with his very large truck that he revs out loudly on purpose and goes down the road all hours of the day and night. It’s extremely loud, and we are all afraid someone will get hit eventually. Everyone complains, but it just goes on and on. Please be considerate of your neighbors. The village is not the place for the noise or speeding, especially when you are by a school.
Hamlin Post Office I want to say that I appreciate the attention and service I get from the employees when I go in for my stamps. Sherry was kind enough to put my stamps in a large plastic sleeve to keep my five books of stamps together. It really came in handy with the large number of stamps that I purchased. With all that is going on in the world we live in, it is always nice to be treated kindly. Hamlin Post Office is the best!

Paraplegic Battles UTIs
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury back in 1979. I battle one UTI after another, and I am becoming immune to most antibiotics. Why the constant infections? My urologist just ordered a CT scan, but seems uninterested in me as a patient. I am sick of being sick. I straight catheterize four times a day usually. It’s getting very hard for them to match the antibiotic to the culture. At times the infections are so bad I get “foggy headed.” These times I am in misery. The last time I went to the ER hoping it wasn’t sepsis. They gave me antibiotics. I can’t keep running to the ER. My copays are too much. Maybe I need a doctor who specializes in working with people who have a spinal cord injury. -- Anon. ANSWER: Regular drainage of the bladder with a “straight catheter” is the most effective way to reduce the risk of urine infections in a person with a spinal cord injury, but it is not perfect. People may still get bacteria in the bladder. Although it may be worthwhile to review your catheterization technique with an expert, it’s possible to get infections even with perfect technique. You haven’t become immune to antibiotics, but the frequent use of powerful antibiotics will make you colonized with resistant bacteria, so that if you do get an infection, it’s likely to be with a difficult-totreat organism. The CT scan is a good idea to see whether there is an anatomic reason for recurrent (or persistent) infections. I am disappointed to hear your urologist does not seem to be doing his or her best for you. Recurrent infections are dangerous. Becoming foggy headed is a sign of serious systemic infection, and sepsis (a dysfunctional body response to infection) is life-threatening. Some people take antibiotics to prevent infection. Often, these are rotated to reduce resistance. A urologist experienced in spinal cord injury, perhaps in consultation with an infectious disease doctor, would be ideal.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Drain and oven cleaners: Many drain and oven cleaners contain lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), a chemical derived from salt or wood ash that is used to break down other substances, particularly those that are sticky. Lye is quite caustic in high amounts and extremely alkaline, which can cause burns and skin irritation. Lye is also found in soaps and detergents. When handled correctly in safe amounts, lye can be used safely. However, it can be dangerous if it gets into the hands of children or is touched by pets.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
No, Life Has Not Returned to Normal A recent survey concluded that we seniors are ready to go back out into the world, to resume our former pre-COVID activities. I suspect the poll questions weren’t asked of seniors in my part of New England. We are not, for the most part, ready to get back to what we were doing before. We learned to talk to family and friends on internet conferences and managed the software quite well. We explored new hobbies with materials that arrived by mail since we weren’t going into stores. We mastered complicated recipes (with ingredients picked up curbside at the grocery), and we renewed our interest in chess and other games, playing online. We explored parts of our state we hadn’t seen before because we could safely drive around -- as long as we didn’t get out of the car. Our senior center is still holding the men’s Monday lunch in the parking lot, socially distanced, of course. The French language class still isn’t meeting because it didn’t work out well trying to hear and speak French while spaced out across the parking lot with cars going by. The art classes are still done remotely because it’s difficult to do watercolor painting outside with the breeze blowing, and no one is ready to go inside the building. A few fast phone calls revealed that, no, the American Legion hall still isn’t open. The auto dealership is trying to restrict potential buyers to test driving only three cars because each one has to be sanitized after customers take one out for a spin. The deli on Main Street is still taking orders only at the front window and doesn’t know when it will open for indoor eating. If a poll were done here, I suspect it would conclude that, no, we’re not ready to come out yet. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * English philosopher Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) is believed to have eaten a paste of ground pearls and lemon juice to cure illness. * Speaking of pearls, the ancient Greeks believed they were the hardened tears of joy from Aphrodite, goddess of love. * Fear of young people is known as “ephebiphobia.” * The astronomer William Henry Pickering thought that black spots on the Moon were migrating insects.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Stay hydrated. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is something gardeners must do to stay safe when gardening in summer. Water carries heat away from internal organs, helping to prevent heat stroke along the way. Water takes heat through the bloodstream to the skin, resulting in sweat. Gardeners who notice they are not sweating despite the heat should drink more water and even head indoors to cool down. In addition, the American Heart Association notes that keeping the body hydrated helps the heart pump blood more easily, making gardening less taxing on the heart on hot days.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fast-growing evergreens that provide privacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create a more natural and less imposing look. Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes. Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marks a nearly 20 percent increase in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT

Avon Area 303-2970 DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners. EMPLOYMENT

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
