NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Sometimes, despite the cold weather outside, we’re still looking for an icy treat inside. In my family’s dessert experiments, we’ve come up with some doozies, but here’s one you may not have tried: If you put popsicles in the blender, the creamy result tastes just like yummy sherbet. -- JoAnn

* If your lunchbox could be fresher, here’s a tip from S.W. in Texas: Spray a piece of bread with vinegar and zip it up in your lunchbox overnight to clear out smells.

* “You don’t need to buy a special brush to get at high ceilings and skylights: Simply cover a broom with a pillowcase to clean cobwebs off the ceiling. To clean a skylight, cover a mop with a double layer of paper towels or newspaper, and secure with clips. Spray the paper with window cleaner and heft it up!” -- M.E. in Arkansas

* “Here are two more uses for orange peels: Remove all labels and hard parts of the peels. Toss orange peels in a quart Mason jar. When full, fill with vinegar and set in warm place for two weeks. Strain into spray bottle, then discard peels. Makes an excellent disinfectant and ant killer. Or, dry orange peels. When crisp-dry, break into pieces and toss in a blender, then blend to a powder. Put in airtight container to sprinkle on fruit salads or use for orange zest.” -- B.C. in New Hampshire

March Special Daily Special: Reuben Sub St. Patty’s Special PON COU CIAL SPE

Reuben $ 50 16 Pizza Large

Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

Experiencing Hearing Loss?

Turmeric Supplements Safe to Try for Arthritis

Get Experienced Care. Hearing test and consultation. Call today for details and your appointment.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read about turmeric for osteoarthritis. I’m on a limited income. Please tell me more about it, like how much it costs and where I can get it. -- W.C. ANSWER: Turmeric, a spice that has been used for millennia, is the source of curcumin, which has been shown to improve symptoms of osteoarthritis, at least in short-term studies. It is generally thought to be safe, as most people have no side effects or only occasional stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea. A theoretical concern is bleeding, in combination with anticoagulants, but this appears to be rare. I have had many patients try curcumin, and it has improved symptoms in about half of those who tried it. Turmeric is easy to find at any grocery store, but when curcumin is used as a supplement, it is usually combined with other supplements to help with absorption. A common one is piperine, derived from black pepper. It’s difficult to use turmeric from food to get a pharmacologic effect. The usual dose is 400-500 mg two or three times daily. A month’s supply from a reliable online retailer I found cost about $10.

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth are a dental milestone that takes place between the ages of 17 and 21. Wisdom teeth actually are third molars, and are given the name because they come in at a mature age, according to the American Dental Association. If there isn’t enough space for them, wisdom teeth can cause crowding and pain. When molars do not fully erupt, the result is impacted wisdom teeth, which can be very painful.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has psoriasis on his hands, and he thinks it’s from stress. He had psoriasis a long time ago, and now it reappeared. He is stressed because I am sick. Please tell me what cream he can use. Before, he used some good Yugoslavian cream called Vipsogal. -- M.A.M. ANSWER: Psoriasis is a common skin condition thought to be caused by abnormalities in the immune system. There are several forms, but most people with psoriasis notice plaques or papules on the skin. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the psoriasis, but the important part is that it needs evaluation before treatment, both to determine the correct diagnosis and assess severity. This includes at least a joint exam for psoriatic arthritis and a careful history to look for other associated conditions, such as in the eye. Severe disease may need systemic therapies, including biological ones. I looked up Vipsogal and it is a combination of several medicines, especially high-potency steroids. These are the mainstay of treatment for most people with mild to moderate psoriasis and are available in the U.S. and Canada only with a prescription. It’s a powerful medicine with the potential for real harm if used incorrectly. Your husband should see a dermatologist.

Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp Celebrating its 100th Anniversary BY TIM COOK

Camper applications for the 2022 season are now being accepted. The camp is also accepting applications for staff positions. Rochester Rotary announced today a series of public and club events throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary, including: • April 27, 2022: the Construction for Sunshine Kids reception - the Rochester Building and Construction Trades Council and Builders Exchange of Rochester join forces to raise funds for the camp. • May 16 to May 19, 2022: Wegman’s Days of Caring at the camp, when Wegmans employees will volunteer to help get the camp ready for the summer. • May 18, 2022: release of a Sunshine Camp 100th anniversary beer, a fruited American blond ale, made by Heroes Brewing Company.

R

ochester Rotary Sunshine Camp is celebrating its 100th year of serving children and youth with disabilities. Sunshine Camp is the only facility of its kind in Greater Rochester that gives children with special needs a fully accessible camping experience. 2022 marks the centennial year of this fully accessible residential summer camp that serves children with paralysis and other physical challenges and their families. Originally located on 23 acres of land near Durand-Eastman Park when it opened on June 12, 1922, the camp relocated to its current 157-acre site in Rush in 1974. During its first summer, 60 children attended the camp; that number has grown to more than 2,500 children served each summer. “It is amazing that members of our Rochester Rotary club had the foresight a century ago to create a summer camp for kids with special abilities,” said Rochester Rotary President Scott Rasmussen. “Our club members are instrumental in keeping the camp going today, and we look forward to celebrating this special anniversary with our camp partners and with the community.” Rochester Rotary is also trying to locate alumni who worked at or attended camp through the decades to invite to the anniversary events. Camp staff or camper alumni can sign up to get more event information at the Sunshine Camp website: https://www.sunshinecamp.org/alumni/ Rochester Rotary Executive Director Tracey Dreisbach said, “For 100 years, Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp has provided a summer camp for kids with disabilities where they can just be kids, without any barriers – and it gives parents a much-needed respite. Our community can help us continue providing a camping experience for area children with physical challenges for many years to come by participating in the events we have planned this year.” Ann Snyder, whose son Jake has attended camp since 2010, said, “This has been Jake’s favorite week of the whole year every year since he started at Sunshine Camp. And he likes to take in every bit that camp offers by trying everything and challenging himself, cheered on by his fellow campers and counselors. He’s excited every year to go back and see what cabin he’ll be in, which friends he’ll reconnect with and what counselors are back again.” Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp provides a unique camping experience that area children cannot get anywhere else, including a fully accessible treehouse, a sensory center (Gizzi Family Sensory Center), a fully accessible playground (Shirley’s Playland), a climbing wall, zip line, splash pad, archery, boating, fishing, miniature golf, swimming, and arts and crafts. Rochester Rotary offers a two-week program at the camp to children with disabilities at no charge, thanks to generous contributions from Rochester Rotarians and from the community. During the rest of the summer, the camp is enjoyed by campers from partner agencies, including American Diabetes Association, Camp Haccamo (supported by Rotary Clubs of Monroe County), Camp Joy, Cancer Support Community Rochester, EPI (Empowering People’s Independence), and Heritage Christian Services.

Hi, I’m Mom and dad adopted me last year. I am exactly one year old this month. WHAT TO EXPECT AT A VETERINARY DENTAL CLEANING Anesthesia: One of the main differences between a dental cleaning for a person and one for a pet is the use of anesthesia. According to Kulshan Veterinary Hospital, pets do not willingly open their mouths to give veterinary dentists access to perform cleanings. Anesthesia ensures that the animal will remain still and the vet can remove any plaque and tartar that has built up. If a tooth needs to be extracted, sedation ensures that will go smoothly.

Can you connect the transmission message from one of Alexander Graham Bell’s telephones to the other? Make sure they can send the message to each other!

Bell studied the human voice and worked with various schools for the deaf. Bell experimented with sound, working with devices such as a ‘harmonic telegraph’ (used to send multiple messages over a single wire) and a ‘phonautograph’ (used to record sound). He worked on acoustic telegraphy with his assistant, an electrical designer named Thomas Watson. Bell’s #irst words with the working telephone were spoken to his assistant Watson and were along the lines of “Mr Watson, come here. I want to see you.”

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FUN FOR YOUNGSTERS Many families decorate their homes for St. Patrick’s Day. While such decorations are rarely as extensive as Christmas decorations, parents can encourage their kids’ creative sides by organizing crafts projects for youngsters and their friends. Design projects where kids can create some of the symbols of St. Patrick’s Day that appear in popular culture, such as four-leaf clovers or leprechauns.

The Gospel Corner DISCIPLINE – WHAT?

Simply Perfect

“Despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?” Hebrews 12:5 We are clearly told that LOVE requires discipline. The biggest troubles in school used to be running in halls, chewing gum, and smoking. Now it’s replaced with stabbings, selling drugs, sexting, and rebellious violence with no respect. Talk about going down the fool’s path of life. What’s the difference? Disciplining in love (tough love!). You can’t let them go on if you love them. God bless. Preacher.

S E V RA Kudos for Hard Work Kudos to Kate and her staff at Dollar General in LeRoy. With her guidance, together they brought the store from an unsafe mess to a store that’s clean, stocked, and a pleasure to shop in. This store was in very bad shape, and they have worked very hard. Thank you, and know you are appreciated. Auto Repair Super Powers! Hats off to Michael Kurzawski, the owner of Four Seasons Collision shop in Brockport. This guy embodies integrity and good will. I took my Subaru over to Mike’s shop. (He doesn’t know me at all.) I asked about a “popped out fender” on my car. He took a look at it and within minutes knew exactly how to fix it, and he did. He wouldn’t take any money, and even graciously refused a tip. What a guy! As we continue to make an effort to support local retailers, let’s remember Mike when you need auto body repairs. He’s the real deal. Thanks Mike! - Ray in Brockport. Fire Dept. I wish to express how very impressed I am with the Springwater Fire Department. Ukraine I am so sad for the poor people of the Ukraine. How horrible to wake up one day to have a ruthless dictator decide to take over your country! A peaceful, democratic land that had been co-existing with every country, including Russia, is now forced to fight and, for many, to flea their beloved homes. Too bad the sanctions that Putin is incurring aren’t harsh enough to dissuade him from this senseless aggression. Perhaps in time, NATO will be able to “peacekeep” for the sake of all. Until then, pray for the Ukrainians! Don’t Polute! Littering is very bad. To see bottles, cans, cups, paper, cigarette butts, and more strewn about makes me feel sad. We must prevent litter from getting on the ground before it is found. Children should draw or write a page describing a beach or park filled with litter compared to those which are clean. To litter is very mean.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Rebuilding Lost Muscle A show of hands: How many of us feel that we’ve lost muscle strength during the pandemic? Unfortunately, the answer is that many of us have, and we’re going to have to fight to get it back. There we were, with regular workout and walking routines, on top of all our other daily activities. Along came COVID and its “stay home” restrictions. There were no more early morning walks at the mall, no more visits to the gym for weight training, no more workout or dance classes ... not even any Tai Chi at the senior center. And there went our muscle mass. Getting back to where we were is going to be tough ... but we need to try. Here are a few thoughts on rebuilding our muscle strength: • Look to YouTube for exercise videos designed for seniors. You’ll find thousands: seated exercises, workouts at home, walking workouts, low impact, beginners and so many more. • Sit in a kitchen chair and stand up. Sit down again. Stand up. Repeat 10-12 times. • Invest in hand weights (order them from Amazon and they’re delivered right to your door). Don’t kid yourself and assume you’re ready to wield a pair of 10-pound weights. Start small with 2-pound weights. If you need to order heavier ones, again, be cautious and don’t jump up more than 1-2 pounds. Try increasing the number of repetitions day by day. If necessary, use 1-gallon plastic jugs (one in each hand), partially filled with water, as weights. • If you have stairs in your home, use them to help your leg muscles. Increase the number of times you go up and down each day. Take it easy, especially at the beginning, but be persistent. Some of us are going to have to fight hard to rebuild the muscle mass we’ve lost. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On March 8, 1971, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier meet for the “Fight of the Century” at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The bout marked Ali’s return after the boxing commission revoked his license over his refusal to fight in the Vietnam War. Frazier won by a unanimous decision. * On March 9, 1981, a nuclear accident at a Japan Atomic Power Company plant in Tsuruga, Japan, exposes 59 workers to radiation. Sixteen tons of waste spilled into Wakasa Bay, but Japan’s Atomic Power Commission made no mention of the accident until more than a month later. By then, radioactive levels of seaweed in the area were found to be 10 times greater than normal. * On March 11, 1997, Paul McCartney, a former member of Beatles, is knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his “services to music.” McCartney became Sir Paul in a centuries-old ceremony of pomp and solemnity at Buckingham Palace in central London. LAWN & LANDSCAPING

PREVENT DIY INJURIES When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far. When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT

585-880-4109

(NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons.

Tree Trimming & Removal • Emergency Services Stump Grinding • Fully Insured • Free Estimates

Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.

Wanted

Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing.

By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com. Page 18

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Perry” tugs, fights and whines when I put a collar and leash on him. He will even flop down and refuse to move. I don’t know what to do. -- Mike D., Roanoke, Virginia DEAR MIKE: Oh, that’s frustrating! But you can help Perry to tolerate his collar and leash by making some adjustments and rebuilding a positive association with the leash. Here are a few tips to start with: * Check the fit and comfort of Perry’s collar. Sometimes owners buy stylish collars that look great on their pet but are uncomfortable and either too big or too small. * Consider a chest halter instead of a collar. This provides a supportive fit and when you tug on the leash, pressure is distributed around a dog’s torso rather than its neck. * Re-introduce Perry to the new collar or halter gradually. Show him the new gear while offering a treat at the same time. When he’s eating, gently drape the leash over his back. Give lots of praise at the same time. This starts to create positive connections with the new gear. * Conduct obedience training at home, in 10-minute sessions, while Perry wears the new collar or halter. Review basic commands of “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” Leave the leash off at first. * Add the leash, but don’t tug on it. Continue obedience training while Perry wears the new gear. Take the gear off when done. * Gradually increase the time your dog wears the collar or harness and leash. This will take patience, lots of love and encouragement. Always be positive with Perry while retraining to the leash. And if, despite these efforts, he still doesn’t respond, contact a professional trainer to help you both get through this stuck spot. PITFALLS TO AVOID FALLING INTO DEBT Failure to budget: A budget is the most effective way for individuals to gain control of their spending. That lesson seems to resonate more with young people than older men and women. A 2019 poll from Debt.com found that 74 percent of consumers between the ages of 23 and 38 use a budget to govern their spending, while only 67 percent of consumers between the ages of 39 and 54 use a budget. A failure to budget can increase the risk of spending impulsively and make it hard for consumers to see what’s coming in and what’s going out. That’s a recipe for accumulating debt. DID YOU KNOW? Saint Patrick may have not been Irish, but millions of other people are. According to the travel resource WalletHub and the most recent U.S. Census Bureau data, 33.3 million people in the United States claim Irish ancestry. That’s around seven times greater than the entire population of Ireland. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in Boston in 1737, and New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is perhaps the largest and best-known parade for Saint Patrick. What’s more, Saint Patrick’s given name wasn’t Patrick. His “real” (Brythonic) name was Maewyn Succat, according to Irish legend. But Maewyn Succat Day just doesn’t have the same ring to it as St. Patrick’s Day.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Maintaining energy throughout the workday can sometimes be difficult. For busy professionals, compromised energy levels can be especially problematic, causing workers to fall behind and maybe even forcing them to work extra hours just to catch up. While infrequent days of low energy should not pose too great a threat, working professionals who routinely find their energy levels sagging by the end of the workday might want to take certain steps to boost their energy and ensure their productivity doesn’t wane. WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.

HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS DINNER Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
