Spring Tire Maintenance

Salt, grime and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical winter. Drivers will not get far this spring and summer without tires in good repair, which is why tire maintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist.

Now is the time to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. Many tires indicate the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidewalls. Cold temperatures may cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on improperly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires when they are cold for the most accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also will improve fuel economy.

Examine the tires for tread wear. Any uneven or abnormal tread wear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the wheels realigned at the very least. Mechanics may recommend rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every six months for the average driver. Wheel realignment may be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road.

Drivers may discover extreme tread wear, bulges or even cracks in the sidewall during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s time to replace the tires.

Irresponsible Dog Owner

Dear Neighbor, You recently got a German Shepard that lives outside on a chain (I’ve got my own opinions on that but not right now.) How can you listen to your dog barking all the time at all hours of the day? Your neighbors don’t want to listen to it. On top of the barking, your dogs are frequently getting loose. They are coming onto neighboring properties and they are aggressive. When the one is chained up, it is barking and harassing us while we try to enjoy our own yard. The Chocolate Lab you keep off-leash is trying to get through and around the bad wire fence to come harass us. If you aren’t going to be good dog owners, get rid of them. Our peace and safety shouldn’t be diminished because you’re selfish, neglectful and irresponsible.

Volunteer at our food pantry

I am getting so disgusted. Myself and a couple other volunteers at our food pantry have to watch another volunteer fill his trunk week after week and bring things to his family and friends. The worst part of the whole thing is they don’t even need it. There are so many people who really need the food who come in each week and really appreciate the food we give them. These people really need the food. It is very difficult to sit here every week watching him fill his trunk. Doesn’t he have any shame?

MIDLAKES AGRICULTURE PROGRAM EXPOSES STUDENTS TO AUTHENTIC LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Western NY is home to incredible agricultural opportunities, from dairy and livestock farms to orchards and elds that supply thousands of consumers around the region with everything the heart and tastebuds could wish for. Agriculture a ects all of us, from the food and products we consume to our surrounding atmosphere and lifestyle. As Midlakes Middle/High School teacher Marina Bartolotta-O’Brien says, “We all have the need to eat, put clothes on our backs, and a roof over our heads. None of that would happen without agriculture.”

Midlakes Middle/High School’s growing agriculture program exposes students in grades 7-12 to potential career opportunities, area employers, and techniques used in the local ag industry. Midlakes o ers several classes that form a concentration in agriculture as well as a separate extracurricular Ag Club. Current courses include Ag Exploration, Career Explorations & Development, Ag Business, Aquaculture, Outdoor Education, and 8th Grade Ag Tech. e district plans to grow the program with Ag Exploration 2, Small Animal Science, and Floral Design courses next year and potentially additional courses in coming years.

According to Midlakes’ public relations coordinator, Todd Clausen, three teachers bring agricultural expertise into the classroom: Ethan Sleeman works on farms during the summers, Marina Bartolotta-O’Brien taught Animal Science at the Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center, and Jessica Spence previously worked for the 4H Youth Development Program in Yates and Wayne counties. Each grows food at home. Bartolotta-O’Brien also raises ducks and chickens for meat and eggs, has dairy cows, goats, and other animals.

Midlakes’ Agriculture program has evolved over time, and Sleeman says, “Our goal is to connect kids to something they are interested in and give them some non-traditional options –something they will get excited about. It may not be their major in college, but when they have a home or apartment someday, they may take advantage of what they learned to grow a garden.”

Spence says, “We need to be able to feed our population and we’re not headed in that direction without innovation and creativity, like creating alternative foods in labs, being able to grow vertically instead of horizontally.” She says agriculture lends itself to hands-on learning, allowing them to take eld trips to see agriculture in action and bring in guest speakers to demonstrate what they do. “I think the excitement of bringing it in is just getting students interested in a more hands-on, interactive way so they will maybe engage in some of the professions that are available right here in our area.”

Teachers and administration have advocated for program development to meet the needs/requests of the community. Fi y area businesses and nearly twenty local farms in the Midlakes district rely on the agriculture industry to support operations. Many classroom speakers come from these businesses. Students have taken eld trips to many of them to learn more about

careers, how these businesses use technology / innovations, and their place in the local agriculture industry.

Overall, Midlakes’ focus re ects the expansive agriculture industry, from growing to innovation to entrepreneurship and more. For example, Ag Tech provides an introductory/general level view of the agriculture industry. Earlier in the year, students hollowed out pumpkins donated by a local farm and planted mums in them to make sustainable planters. Recently, they followed along with the incubation and hatching progress of ducklings, a project inspired and led by an eighth grader who brought in his own eggs to incubate for the class.

Higher-level courses focus more precisely on speci c areas. Spence’s students learned about gra ing wine vines and making cheese from scratch. Sleeman’s students grow large-mouth bass in a tank at school and recently worked with a science teacher to grow disease-resistant chestnut trees. As classes add to the program, students will be able to follow speci c pathways, such as animal science or plant science.

Midlakes’ Ag Education is an intracurricular model that allows students to develop an understanding of a topic in the classroom, practice those learned skills in a real-world setting, such as an internship, to foster personal growth and leadership. Whether a student wants to be able to grow a more successful garden, be a better educated pet owner or start their own business, every student can gain something from Ag Education and be successful. Some students may not even know of the possibilities and opportunities that are out there and it’s our job to help share those with them.

Stay Cool and Hydrated

As the temperature rises during summer, it’s crucial for seniors to stay cool and hydrated. Wear light, breathable clothing and stay in well-ventilated areas. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Opt for hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours. If you need to go outside, wear a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen. Consider using a fan or air conditioning to keep your living space cool. By taking these simple steps, you can enjoy the summer months comfortably and safely.

Do Companies Advertise Ineffective Supplements?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I see supplements advertised on television that are supposed to clear “brain fog” and do many other beneficial things. Are these any good, and can they actually do the things that they claim? If they are effective, why aren’t they sold at drugstores? If not, how is it that companies are allowed to make these false claims and advertise these supplements on television? -- J.L.P.

ANSWER: I believe that there are over-the-counter supplements that are effective for treating some medical conditions, and there are a few instances in which there is strong evidence of benefit, such as a vitamin and mineral formula to slow progression of macular degeneration. Very often, there isn’t enough data to be sure a supplement is either effective or ineffective.

It is certainly true that supplement companies sometimes make claims that they cannot support. By law, supplement advertising can claim to support a body part or function (which is why you see claims like “supports heart health”), but these claims must be followed by: “This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.”

Often, the advertising for a supplement is at odds with that statement, and there are many instances of supplement manufacturers having to pay fines or change their advertising. A supplement that is found to be unsafe can be removed from the market by the FDA. In addition, any substance can be toxic if taken at a high enough dose. Vitamin A supplements are a good example.

The U.S. FDA does not regulate supplements the way they do prescription drugs, and supplement manufacturers do not need to prove that their products are effective. Further, there is strong evidence that some supplements sold in the U.S. do not contain as much (or any!) of the supplement they claim to provide. I always recommend getting a supplement that is verified by a third party, such as the U.S. Pharmacopeia or the National Science Foundation, if possible.

There are very few supplements proven to prevent problems, so I generally recommend against supplements in people who are healthy and have no symptoms. This definitely includes vitamin supplements. Supplements may have benefit in relieving symptoms for some less-serious medical conditions, and physicians should be (or get) familiar with more common supplements, their potential benefits and their toxicities.

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN

(NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used.

A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel.

Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well.

On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain.

In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty.

Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES

Serves 6 to 8

2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices

1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey

1/2 cup white wine

Zest of 1 lemon

Juice of 1 lemon

Fresh sage sprigs for garnish

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet overmediumheat.Addtheapples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

is Cat Clings too Much

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-year-old cat Ella has gotten very clingy lately. She was always fairly independent and preferred to lounge atop the sofa and watch the world outside the window. Now she refuses to do that. She runs to greet me at the door, meows nonstop until I feed her and then wants to climb into my lap the instant I sit down. She also begs to come into the bedroom and curl up at the end of the bed next to my feet. I know this sounds just darling, but it’s unusual behavior from her. What’s your advice? -- Susan W., Burlington, Vermont

DEAR SUSAN: It’s interesting that Ella’s behavior has changed so noticeably, so fast. Has anything changed in the home environment, like you have a new work schedule, or moved furniture around, or added (or lost) a human family member?

Also, has anything about Ella’s health changed? Does she have any underlying condition that might be getting worse? Check with the vet to be sure.

If neither environment nor health are the problem, you can try to enforce some rules to alter Ella’s behavior.

-- Boredom: Make sure you play with Ella more o en each day. e clingy behavior may be a request for additional attention.

-- Boundaries: Don’t change feeding times just because Ella demands it. And don’t let her into the bedroom if you don’t want her there. Keep the door shut.

-- Bribery: Well, not really bribes, but positive reinforcement. When Ella goes to her old lounging spot, reward her with praise or a treat. Don’t give her treats when she’s in your lap; instead, lead her away and give a treat to her elsewhere.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION

Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas.

The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. Astheeconomycontinuestoimprove,jobprospectsfollowsuit.According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills.
