10 1/2 year old sisters, Midnight & Shadow, are both very docile and love to join our laps at TV time or whenever. Dog less at the time (all we ever knew), we temporarily housed them since a friend couldn’t keep them any longer. We never knew what we were missing by never having cats before and now we would be lost without them. They have brought such happiness to our lives. Fate made us cat lovers!

NOTABLE FIGURES TO CELEBRATE THIS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Viola Davis Desmond: Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1914, Viola Davis Desmond took a stand for African Canadians in 1946 when she refused to sit in the balcony at the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, a section designated for Blacks. Desmond was forcibly removed and arrested and ultimately fined and sentenced to 30 days in jail. She took her case all the way to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, which upheld the verdict. Desmond passed away in 1965, but in 2010 the province of Nova Scotia issued an official apology and pardoned her.

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Smart shopping involves making budget-friendly purchases. Never paying full price is a mantra shoppers can follow to help keep their finances in check. In addition to coupons and other discounts, shoppers can usually score deals based on which time of year they shop for particular items. Each year, various consumer resources offer advice on the best time to buy certain items. The beginning of the year is often an ideal time to purchase certain items. Consumers who take advantage of sales offered at the start of the new year can save substantial amounts of money. Now that the holiday season has passed, consumers can begin to find deals on items for themselves.

The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION

(NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality.

“Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needsofourhardworkingconsumers,”saysDebFerraro, vicepresidentof product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.”

Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job.

Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection.TheCarharttkneepadfeaturesastrapless, honeycombdesign that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection.

The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees.

DID YOU KNOW?

Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude.Thetroposphereiswhere nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’sstratosphereabsorbssome of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Add insulation. Many older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation was not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case with older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold growth and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, crawl spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and water pipes. Cover your water heater with an insulated water heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the water.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

DID YOU KNOW?

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children and adolescents get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. The CDC advises that such physical activity should include aerobic activity and muscle and bone strengthening exercises. Aerobic activity should take up most of kids’ daily physical activities and can include moderate activities, such as brisk walking, or more intense activities like running. Parents should make sure kids include some vigorous aerobic activity in their physical activity routines at least three days per week. Muscle strengthening activities do not mean parents should get their youngsters in the gym as soon as possible. Rather, activities like gymnastics or pushups done three times per week can be enough to help kids build strong muscles. The CDC notes that as kids reach adolescence, they may start structured weighttraining programs to strengthen their muscles. Jumping rope or running three times per week can serve as kids’ bone-strengthening exercises.

Cats and Colds

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: is winter, a lot of my family has had colds and u. Can my cat catch a cold from us? -- Darlene, via email

DEAR DARLENE: Cats don’t catch colds directly from humans, but they can su er from upper respiratory infections that are just as uncomfortable.

A number of viral and bacterial infections can make your cat sick. Some of these, such as FVR (feline rhinotracheitis) and FVC (feline calicivirus) can be prevented by making sure your cat gets an annual checkup and vaccinations. An underlying health condition also can make your cat more susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Again, regular checkups and shots can keep it healthy.

What symptoms does a cat with a URI have? It may be sni ing and sneezing, along with a clear or cloudy discharge from the eyes or nose. Your cat also may have little to no appetite and might be lethargic.

Contact the veterinarian right away if your cat has any of these symptoms. e vet will want to examine your cat to con rm what kind of URI it has. Use a cat carrier so other cats in the waiting room won’t be exposed, and to keep your cat safe.

Follow the vet’s instructions on caring for your sick cat. You may be given a prescription, and you will be asked to keep the cat comfortable and warm, and to try to get it to drink water and eat some food. Dry food may be a turno , but it may eat a little wet food. If your cat won’t eat or drink, contact the vet again -- an IV may be needed to keep it hydrated.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES

A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value.

Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foodscanaffecttheoverallcaloriecountofameal.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES TO REDUCE CANCER RISK

Avoid tobacco: Not only does smoking cause between 80 and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it also contributes to many other forms of the disease, including cancers of the pancreas, liver, bladder, and cervix. Quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke can reduce cancer risk.

Magic Maze – LOVE

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had a BMI over 40 for the last 20 years, and I have not been able to lose weight or keep the weight off. My doctor prescribed Ozempic, which is helping, but as soon as I stop, all the weight creeps back on in a few weeks. I was always wary of surgery for weight loss, but recent studies seem to indicate better long-term health outcomes. What are your thoughts? -- S.O.

ANSWER: Medical or surgical treatment for weight loss is not right for every person who is overweight. Many people take medications in the class called glucagonlike peptide-1 agonists, which includes semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda and Victoza) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). But these medicines have the potential for harm, and an individual’s risks, especially conditions that can be affected by being severely overweight or obese, need to be carefully considered. Surgery has far more risks than medication and requires the most careful consideration before receiving a recommendation of bariatric surgery, of which there are many types.

I am much more likely to refer a patient to one of my colleagues in bariatric surgery when a patient is very obese and when there are clear medical issues that I can expect to get better with surgery. These medical issues can include diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Most of the time, these conditions can be well-managed without bariatric surgery, but sometimes management is very difficult. In this case, consideration of bariatric surgery is worthwhile. Bariatric surgery is never the first choice in weight management. A comprehensive lifestyle intervention -- with an individualized diet (ideally recommended by an expert such as a registered dietician or nutritionist), moderate exercise (with a goal of 150 minutes per week minimum), and regular meetings to help keep a person on track -- is the right place to start. It is effective for many people if they maintain the behaviorial changes.

I have been prescribing some of my patients with the GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP medications with good results, but as you mention, if you stop taking them, they stop working. Unless you make a dramatic change to your lifestyle that you can keep up, the weight will return.

Bariatric surgery does have very strong long-term weightloss data, as well as dramatic reductions in diabetes when used for the appropriate people.

SENIOR NEWS

Lowering Our Drug Costs

I got a shock the other day when I went to the pharmacy to pick up the latest re ll of my three drugs and realized that the pharmacy assistant had neglected to run it through GoodRx, the program that helps reduce the price of our drugs. Once he did that, the cost dropped signi cantly.

It made me realize just how much other seniors are paying for the drugs we need to stay healthy. ere are ways to cut those costs. It just takes a little work and a lot of monitoring on our part to make sure it happens.

As mentioned, there’s GoodRx (www.goodrx.com), which I’ve used for several years. eir website isn’t the easiest to use, but a er you try it once, you’ll appreciate being able to cut the costs of your drugs every time you need a re ll.

ere are other ways as well:

RxAssist (www.rxassist.org) has programs that are run by the pharmaceutical companies to help those who can’t a ord their prescriptions. If your drugs cost more than $10, present your RxAssist card to get the lowest price. Check the website for a long directory of patient assistance programs. Beware that some programs involve a small fee to be a member and many have eligibility requirements.

Consider Walmart pharmacies for their generic program. A 30-day prescription will cost $4 and only $10 for a 90-day prescription. Not all generic drugs will qualify for those prices, but it’s worth making a call to your local Walmart pharmacy to nd out if your drugs are on that list.

NeedyMeds website (www.needymeds.org) was started by a physician in 1997 to help gather information about reduced drug and health care costs. e website says over $337 million has been saved so far. And nally, check the prices at Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs (costplusdrugs.com). For some drugs, this one is the lowest of all.

HOW TO EASE INTO EXERCISING

Men and women who resolve to get healthy often benefit by combining a healthy diet with regular exercise. Making such adjustments can be challenging, especially as men and women accustomed to sedentary lifestyles begin exercise regimens. Whether they’re fitness novices or returning to exercise after a long layoff, men and women can employ various strategies to make that transition go smoothly.

Work with a trainer. Many fitness facilities offer a handful of free personal training sessions to new members upon enrollment. Take advantage of such offers, as trainers can devise workout routines for people of various abilities. Trainers also can instruct new members how to use machines and help ensure they’re following proper form so they can avoid injury. If necessary, continue working with trainers after making use of complementary sessions. Personal training sessions typically can be purchased in batches, and men and women can continue working with trainers until they’re comfortable working out on their own. Embrace low-intensity exercises. Even men and women who were once accomplished athletes must take it slow when beginning an exercise regimen after a long layoff. Initial low-intensity exercise sessions might feel ineffective and seemingly produce few results. But early on, the goal is to simply get the body acclimated to physical activity. As their bodies adjust, men and women can begin to make their workouts more intense. Focus on flexibility. Sedentary bodies likely lack the flexibility of bodies more accustomed to exercise. Men and women who are becoming more physically active must include stretching in their workouts and cease exercising if they feel something tweak or suspect they have pulled a muscle.

Take days off. As men and women begin to see their work in the gym pay off, they may be tempted to push themselves hard, working out several days in a row without taking time off. But rest is an important component of an effective workout. Days off help the body repair itself and recover from vigorous activity.

Exercising for the first time or after a long layoff requires patience. But as men and women grow more acclimated to physical activity, they will begin to see the fruits of their labors.

MAKE MANAGING WINTER MORE FASHIONABLE

Sturdy outerwear is a necessity in winter. Invest in a quality coat that not only keeps you warm, but looks good, too. Opt for a burst of color rather than choosing a coat in a neutral shade. Detailing on the outerwear, such as buckles, belts and buttons, can add to the appeal.

Consider different types of outerwear for different days. For example, a ski-inspired short coat or even a navy-style peacoat is ideal for casual days. When the temperature hasn’t dipped too low, wear a wool poncho over a turtleneck or sweater to add movement and style. Always have a more formal and longer-length coat available for formal events. And don’t forget to have a selection of matching gloves, scarves and hats to finish off the look.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* Save smaller bits of leftover veggies in a large freezer-safe container or bag, in the freezer. When it’s full, make vegetable soup.

* “Be sure you use bathroom fans correctly, turning on to remove steam, but turning off to keep from pumping out heat. This is equally important in the summer, when you pump out valuable cooled air. Many people don’t think of fans this way, and they end up running for hours.”

-- R.D. in Mississippi

* Keep salt or baking soda by the stove for small quick cleanups. A good dose of salt will stop an egg from running all over the place. Dip a damp cloth in baking soda for a handy scrub. Although a handful of either might work in a pinch on a small flare-up on the stove, you should have a fire extinguisher close by for fires.

* “I used to comb through my last year’s calendar for important yearly dates when transferring them to the new year’s calendar. This year I have gotten smart. At the end of the month, before turning the page, I have highlighted the items I would want to put in next year’s calendar. When I look back, I will not have to search through all the entries for the good stuff.” -- U.L. in Ohio

* “I just spent a lot of time cleaning my mother’s bathtub in a longneglected bathroom. To keep it from mildewing, I used paste wax to protect the walls. You can use car wax for the same purpose, and many people know about this helpful tip. But I wanted to add a caution: walls only. Especially if you have an elderly resident (or a child), do not wax the inside of the tub, and make sure to have a nonslip mat in the tub at all times.” -- A

Skip the gas station flowers, candy or last-minute gifts. Valentine’s Day is a time to show you care. If you’ve left gifting to the last minute, you may make the situation worse by giving something impersonal you picked up on an errand. If you forgot or ran out of time, simply admit you goofed or time got away from you. Then ask your sweetheart what he or she wants and go shopping together.

RAVES

Thank You!

A local catering company surprised us again with delicious food. Thank you! Your next-door neighbors are most appreciative.

Wonderful Wife

Thank you to my wonderful wife for the sacrifices you have made to take care of our two children. You have paused your career as a standout teacher – twice – to focus on raising them, currently our little girl in her first year of life. You are an outstanding mother, wife, and friend. Everyone whose life you have touched is fortunate, especially me. Life is undoubtedly hard right now with two young ones, but the messes, poor sleep, and frustrations are worth it. The days are long but the years are short. We are blessed with two healthy happy children, a roof over our heads, and stability. Through all the challenges I look forward to moments big and small: cooking, Adirondack vacations, playing outside with the kids, family hikes, silly time, and couch time (plus Trivia and Even Exchange in the Penny Saver). I love you and keep your head up. I’m glad I started a conversation with you – the tall, beautiful brunette from the environmental club – at that party back in college 16 years ago.

Avon Inn Angel!

On January 12, 2023 our ladies golf league gathered for an "after-the holiday" get together at the Avon Inn. One of our golfers fell into medical distress and we would all like to thank Angel, our bartender/server for her quick actions to get our friend comfortable, cooled down and cleared the way for the emergency workers. Your assistance and calmness were much appreciated.

Disappointed and Sad

I am disappointed in some people. It is sad. I was at [Business Name] and got a cart that a good Samaritan left so I in return left it unhooked for someone else. At that time a lady came out and I watched her while I was putting my bag in the car. She took her cart AND the one I left, hooked them, and in turn got the quarters. I always leave my cart if I get one or return a cart if it was left and I used it. I try to do something nice and someone has the nerve to do that. It's not right. Makes me disappointed and sad that someone would do this.

Utilize in-vehicle energy feedback. A recent study from researchers at the Institute of Transportation Studies found that drivers who used driver feedback devices in their vehicles in an effort to save fuel improved their gas mileage by about 10 percent. Many modern vehicles are equipped with such devices, and drivers can learn to use them and reap the rewards with less frequent trips to the filling station.

Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people’s patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter’s abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE

Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

Kimberly Ann Dougherty (Harrison) February 1, 2023

Avon - February 1, 2023 at age 72. Kim is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Jerry Dougherty; daughters, Jennifer Dougherty (Tim Ferrara), Colleen (Bryan) Mann; son, John Dougherty (Mark Falls); brother, Steve (Kathy) Harrison and multiple nieces, nephews, sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-laws and cousins.

Kim was born on November 8, 1950, the daughter of Roger and Jane Harrison. She was a proud wife, mother, sister, businesswoman and most proudly, grandmother to Ruairi, Gideon and Killian Mann. Kim grew up as a faith- lled person, attending St. Agnes Catholic School in Avon before going on to St. Agnes High School in Rochester. She grew up under the business savvy and community-focused guidance of her mother, Jane, the founder of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. And the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

Kim was dedicated to her family, her faith, her community and to being a steward and leader of her mother’s legacy, co-leading the Genesee Valley Penny Saver alongside her beloved brother, Steve. She was the true example of a servant leader, giving sel essly to the people and community she cared so much about. Mostly quiet and reserved, she was proud, never letting her own challenges, health or other, get in the way of doing what she could to take care of others. After all, “she didn’t have time for that.” Sometimes it was just a thoughtful card, but often it was something she baked in the kitchen, where she found her peace.

roughout her life she had a great love for horses that she joyfully passed on to both her daughter, Jennifer and granddaughter, Ruairi. Kim was the American “mom” to multiple foreign exchange students from around the world.

She was not a social butter y, unlike her husband, Jerry. at just wasn’t her thing. She found her joy in her family, her home and giving back to the community as an employer, donor and a dedicated, behind the scenes, Rotary wife. Kim served on the board of the St. Agnes School Education Foundation and for many years on the eresa House Board.

Family and friends may call February 10, 2023 from 2 - 6 PM at the Stephenson - Dougherty Funeral Home, 350 Genesee Street, Avon. Her Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 11 AM at St. Agnes Church, 96 Prospect Street, Avon. Interment St. Agnes Cemetery, Avon. Donations in her honor may be made to Saint Agnes School Education Foundation, 60 Park Place, Avon, NY 14414 (https://www.stagnesavon.org/giving-opportunities) and the Sisters of Saint Joseph (https://www.ssjrochester.org/).
