Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.

PALM SUNDAY

On what is now called “Palm Sunday,” Jesus Christ rode a donkey into Jerusalem while villagers welcomed him and waved palm branches. This is mentioned in each of the Biblical Gospels and occurs a week before His subsequent resurrection. Jesus possibly rode a donkey rather than a horse as a sign of peace, as a war-waging king might ride a horse. The “Passion of the Christ” is typically read during Palm Sunday masses.

WHAT IS COMMUNION?

Christians believe that Holy Communion is the receiving of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is comprised of bread and wine, although some denominationsbelievethatitisnot necessary to receive the Lord’s body and blood in each, instead feeling that Christ is present fully in either the bread or wine.

Catholics believe that through the process of transubstantiation the bread and wine before the priest becomes the body and blood of Christ. According to catechism and the liturgy, as soon as the Institution Narrative begins, the Lord is present in the elements of bread and wine.

The institution of Holy Eucharist occurred during the Last Supper. As stated in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Jesus instructed His followers to use bread and wine to remember the sacrifice He was going to make when He died on the cross for people’s sins.

While much fanfare is understandably afforded to First Holy Communion, Christians receive the Eucharist every day at church services all over the world. Receiving communion is not a singular act. People recognized that every time they gathered around a table to eat and drink, it provided an opportunity to recognize and thank Jesus. Adults can reinforce this concept to children by explaining that receiving Communion each week at Mass is just as special as receiving it that first time in spring. HolyCommunionisanopportunity to enter into an intimate union with Jesus Christ, who Christians believe provides holiness and grace to all who are willing to receive Him.

Look for stowaways. Uneven wear is not the only thing drivers can detect with their eyes. In the course of your travels, your tire might have picked up a few stowaways, such as nails and screws that are poking into the tire. If you find any freeloaders, take your car to your mechanic, as your tires may need to be replaced.

How

Stay with the vehicle. Once you have called for help and set up flares or triangles, stay with the vehicle, though do so at a safe enough distance so you are not in harm’s way.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME

Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxingsanctuary.

There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room.Insulatingproperlywillallow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort.

Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help controlfirebylimitingitsspread.

Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity andpropagationofnoise.

Statement

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

CARPET/FLOORING

MAKE FLOORS SHINE LIKE NEW

Restoring shine to flooring involves making sure the floor is clean. Dirt and grimecandiminishthecolorandlookofflooring.Homeownersareurgedto use products designed for their particular flooring material, such as wood, laminate, stone, or vinyl. Products oftentimes are not interchangeable. Begin by thoroughly sweeping or vacuuming the floor. Clean along all surfaces of the floor, including under furniture where dust and dirt tends to accumulate. Use the hard-floor setting on a vacuum to avoid having the brush rolls scratch or damage the flooring. Laminate can scratch easily and hardwood flooring is not impervious to dings and scratches. Quite often a dry mop or a static-charged mopping cloth effectively picks up debris left behind on many flooring surfaces.

Although many commercial cleaners can clean flooring, homemade mopping solutions are sometimes just as effective. Keep in mind that wood, laminate and vinyl should not be soaked in water. A little liquid can go a long way on these surfaces. Water and other liquids can seep between laminate and wood boards, potentially contributing to swelling and damage over time. Also, resist the urge to use too much soap. Soap can leave behind a residue that dulls the finish of the floor.

Vinegar-based solutions can work well on a wide variety of flooring types and help cut through any sticky residue left behind from cooking, cleaning and the activities of daily life. Many wood-flooring cleaners and polishes are oil-based to condition the wood in the process. Whenever making one’s own solution, test a small amount in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it will not damage the flooring.

When looking for a new hobby, adults may find that activities that suit their personalities tend to be the most rewarding.

Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourselfthantohiresomeoneelsetodoitforyou, butthat’snotnecessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantialamountofprofessionallycontractedprojects, buthomeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

* A common issue with blood donation -- along with other types of charitable contributions -- is that if donors don’t know the recipient, it’s harder to convince them that donating is beneficial. Therefore, in an effort to encourage more young people to give blood, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, sends a text when their donation has been dispensed to someone in need, providing proof that it’s going to good use.

HOW TO CUT COSTS ON HOME RENOVATIONS

Do some prep work: You might be able to save by doing some of the demolition and preparatory work yourself. For example, you can tear up old carpeting before the installation of new tile floors. Perhaps you can mend and patch up walls before a paint job.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES

Smarter technology: Many homeowners are embracing smart technology throughout their homes, but it’s not just lights that turn on with voice command or more efficient thermostats. Innovative technology includes toilets that can autonomously stay clean and sanitized, refrigerators equipped with cameras so homeowners can see the contents inside and indoor food recyclers that can turn food waste into fertilizer.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME

Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, eachcarwashedattheirfacilityconsumesjustnineto15gallonsofwater per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PASSOVER AND EASTER

To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance ofPesach,orPassover.Duringthis time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

CREATE MORE CLOSET SPACE WITHOUT MAJOR RENOVATIONS

In small rooms, homeowners may want to find another way to utilize vertical space. A loft bed, which raises the bed up to a level where it might be on the top bunk of a bunk bed, will free up plenty of storage space beneath the bed. This can be turned into a floor closet.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* I purchase rotisserie chickens and use the meat for different things -- soup, casseroles, etc. I have a trick to getting the skin off. My hand strength isn’t what it used to be, and those birds are slippery. I use a paper towel to grip the skin, and pull the meat and bone right out. It works well on a raw bird too.

-- L.A. in Florida

* To re-whiten socks or washcloths, try boiling a pot of water and adding a sliced, juiced lemon. Soak the items for at least an hour, and then pick out the lemon and add the pot -- water and all -- to a load of wash.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* If there are crushed cookies in a pack I purchase, I set them aside in a plastic baggie in the freezer to use on ice cream. Yummy!

-- R.L. in Alberta, Canada

* If you have been cooking in the oven and have a pan that’s got cooked-on food, you can get it clean without all the scrubbing. Immediately after cooking, while the oven is still hot, add enough water to cover the bottom of the pan and a little dishsoap. Put it in the oven until the oven is cool. The residual heat will work on the stuckon food while you are dining, and it’ll wipe right out.

-- W.O. in Minnesota

* When washing out stockings, add a tablespoon of vinegar to the rinse water, and they will retain their elasticity better.

* Wintergreen oil makes a lovely room freshener. Put two drops on a cotton ball and tuck it into the cushions of your couch, or hide it under a lamp pedestal ... anywhere out of the way. The scent drifts over a week or so. -- G.T. in Delaware

* In the movie “Psycho’s” iconic shower scene, Alfred Hitchcock achieved the sound of stabbings by knifing through a casaba melon. He even had his crew audition multiple varieties of melon to get the perfect tone.

* Folks who enjoy collecting ties are known as grabatologists.

* Cinderella’s shoes were made of fur, not glass, in the tale’s original version.

* In the Middle Ages, the “shrew’s fiddle” or “neck violin” was used to punish those who were caught bickering by linking them face-to-face, forcing them to talk to each

What is the biggest challenge with getting started in gardening?

Much like the answer to this question; When is the best time to plant a tree? 20 years ago… but the second-best time is now. I would say the biggest challenge

is just starting. Start small and grow big. With proper planning and care, gardening success is possible even with limited money, time, and experience. Whether your goal is to grow beautiful flowers or food for your family, there are so many ways to grow a garden to fit your goals, preferences, and space. By asking questions here and connecting with your local Cornell Cooperative

Extension and the Master Gardener Volunteers, you’ll learn about selecting and preparing your growing site, garden planning, seed starting and when to plant, garden care and maintenance, pest, and disease management and, of course, harvesting and preservation. So, take the first step and start gardening! We are here to answer your questions and assist you in being successful.

STRATEGIES TO

DISCONNECT

MORE OFTEN

Turn off your notifications. According to research from the Business of Apps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. The sound of a smartphone notification has become as recognizable as any sound, and the volume of notifications the average users receive in a 24-hour period no doubt contributes heavily to how much time they spend on their phones. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices, and may even make individuals more productive.

JULIE VERSCHAGE STEPS DOWN AS GENERAL MANAGER OF AVON TOM WAHL’S AFTER 29 YEARS

If you’ve been in the Avon Tom Wahl’s over the years, chances are you’ve seen Julie Verschage, General Manager of the Avon agship. A er 22 years as GM and 29 years with the community, Julie is hanging up her GM hat to enjoy a semi-retirement.

Julie began at the Avon Tom Wahl’s in 1990, working as a crew member for ve years before taking a few years o to care for an elderly family member. She returned to Tom Wahl’s as a supervisor and was promoted to assistant manager within a year and then progressed to General Manager.

As she embarks on her new adventure at the end of April, Julie says:

“I have had so many team members that have been a pleasure to work with and whom I enjoyed inspiring to succeed in their next career choice. It is heartening when they come back to tell me that they too enjoyed having me as their leader.

“My success here has all been because I have surrounded myself with great people, just like my great leader Keith Herman told me to do. It has made my career fantastic.

“To all our great guests, thank you! I have enjoyed seeing and talking to you all over the last 29 years. Without all of you, Avon would not have been so successful in being the number one store throughout our company. It’s your wonderful visits that have made this happen for the last 22 years. I have made many friendships and will truly miss seeing you all.

“To Tom Wahl, thank you for all your encouragement throughout the years. It always warmed my heart to hear you tell me I was the best manager and that I do a great job with your namesake. I will miss our visits and talks of the past.

She says she has so many fond memories from her years at Tom Wahl’s and especially loves whenever old sta members come in and they chat. She also loves when Tom himself comes in for visits about every other week.

Julie says the physical building may have changed over the past 29 years, but the way it’s run has not. Each location follows Tom’s philosophy that customers always come rst. Tom has cardinal (golden) rules all team members still work by: Beat the customer to the counter; Beat the customer to a smile; Make only the best; Keep the place clean; and Always say thank you.

Julie says maintaining those standards across team members and across locations is de nitely what makes Tom Wahl’s the essential part of the community it is to this day.

In her semi-retirement, Julie says she will work part-time as manager in charge of training to share some of her knowledge and expertise with other managers and crew members across locations.

“Last but not least, thank you to my husband for his endless supportI couldn’t have done it without him. I will miss my current role, but I will enjoy my semi-retirement. ank you all again! Much love to you all!”

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.

Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Finding the Right Food Bowl for an Older Cat Takes Trial and Error

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I hope this advice helps other cat owners. My cat, Ferris, is 13 years old, and while he’s generally healthy, he does have arthritis and is not as energetic as he once was. I noticed a few months ago that he was not nishing his dry food in the evenings, so I took him to the vet to get him checked out. Everything was ne, but the vet said that he might have some discomfort crouching down to reach his food and water.

I went online to nd a raised platform that would hold food and water dishes. e trouble was that many of the platforms were too high for Ferris to reach comfortably, and he didn’t seem very happy with the platform design. Instead, I found a dish that he loves. It sits about three inches above the oor and is angled higher in the back so that he doesn’t push the food out of the bowl while eating. It’s weighted so that it doesn’t shi while he eats. is is a lot more comfortable for Ferris, and he’s eating all of his food again. -Terry L., Bloomington, Indiana

DEAR TERRY: ank you for sharing your story! I’m glad that Ferris found the perfect food dish.

Sometimes we have to try a few di erent items before discovering the perfect one for our pets. Whether it’s a food dish, a toy or a bed, we have to be prepared to spend a little more money than expected to get just the right item. Trial and error is part of the process, and part of the joy of owning a pet.

DID YOU KNOW?

Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

Sunrise Service

I want to thank the owner of the Sunrise Restaurant and the gentleman in the booth adjoining mine. I lost my cell phone between my seat and the wall in my booth. The bench had to be pulled out, but it is attached to the bench in the next booth. The gentleman stood up so the bench could be removed and my phone rescued. Again THANK YOU!

So Proud

So proud of our Cheshire firemen and volunteers for putting together the April 2nd Chicken BBQ Dinners. They cooked hundreds of chicken halves. It took some time to get this great number done and what a wonderful meal it was. Our little hamlet has many businesses –what a great place to live.

Pedestrians, especially in the dark

It's never safe to assume that, simply because pedestrians have the right-of-way, you can blindly walk across the road without looking both ways first. Especially in the dark, when you're wearing dark clothing, there are street lights and oncoming headlights shining in drivers' eyes, and you cross abruptly, causing drivers to have to slam on their brakes to avoid flattening you.

War-ravaged Cratered Parking Lot

In reference to the "unsafe conditions" at a certain Senior/Disabled complex Rant on 3/31/23: I think I know the referred to complex. I don't live there, I visit there, but am seriously considering stopping visiting there because of the pitiful condition of the parking lot for fear of costly damage to my car! The potholes aren't as large as basketballs. The potholes are as large as basketball backboards, which last I checked, measure 6 feet wide, and 3 1/2 feet high!

In store shoppers

Do you believe you’re the only one in the store? You don’t need to do your shopping and jogging at the same time. Jog outside. You come flying out a side aisle like the main aisle is empty, block an aisle while you scrutinize what you want, stop your cart while you read labels right next to another cart blocking everything. You block the deli case with your cart so nobody else can see the items or bring full shopping carts to the speed/self checkout, even if the sign says 20 or less. Courtesy for others is a thing of the past.

Leaving An Estate To Charity

One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charitiesisfollowed.

When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according toyourwishes.

SENIOR NEWS

Rising Cost of Home Insurance

When I got my home insurance bill and it showed a massive payment for my policy renewal, I actually laughed. I ipped the page over, believing I’d received someone else’s mail by mistake ... probably a neighbor down the street. But when I saw my own name, I wasn’t laughing anymore when I grabbed my calculator and discovered that the new amount was a 45% increase over last year.

Still, ever hopeful, I called my insurance company, wondering if someone else’s home had been plugged into my account. No, it hadn’t. e amount listed was indeed for my home, as were the numbers for out buildings, personal property and temporary living expenses.

I called several neighbors: Has your insurance gone up? No, they all said. I discovered the likely reason for that during a call to a friendly local insurance agent. ey’re no doubt in the middle of a policy period, he said. eir bad surprise will come when it’s time to renew that policy and all the price increases hit them.

ere are several reasons why a policy can increase, such as material and labor (which is the big one right now), additions to the house, number of prior claims, your deductible, your credit score and the breed of dog you own.

A er several calls to di erent insurance companies, it’s not looking good. What I get so far is that if I decide to gamble and lower my coverage level, I run a risk that something will happen and I’ll be stuck for mammoth amounts of money that insurance won’t cover.

e only thing that’s going to save a few dollars is to pay the whole year upfront and not have to pay the monthly budget fees with every payment.

Take a deep breath before you open your next policy renewal envelope. Good luck.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Taking Zinc as Daily Supplement Won’t Change Hair Loss

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am having trouble finding a reliable recommendation for the daily supplement zinc. I purchased 50-mg pills, but I think this may be too much. I am 74 and female, and I would like to include zinc in my daily supplements, as my hair has begun thinning quite a bit straight down the top of my head. -- R.M.

ANSWER: Zinc is an important nutrient, and it is certainly true that zinc deficiency may lead to hair loss. However, most people with hair loss do not have a zinc deficiency, and there is no convincing data that giving extra zinc to a person with normal zinc levels will help with hair loss. Hair loss along the midline is consistent with female pattern hair loss, which is very common among women in their 70s and usually has nothing to do with zinc. Very high amounts of zinc supplementation can be dangerous (and impair your body’s ability to absorb other trace metals such as copper), but 50 mg is a safe amount. Still, the most effective therapies for female pattern hair loss include minoxidil (usually topical, but low-dose oral is increasingly used), spironolactone and finasteride. A dermatologist is the expert on hair loss and can give you a better diagnosis by exam than I can by your description.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My youngest son has to have both of his hips replaced. He is only 37, but is in a very strenuous job of being a boilermaker in an oil refinery. This is the hardest job in a heavy industry. His doctors are telling me that his hips deteriorated due to alcohol consumption -- is this even possible? Even if he can get through this ordeal, he is still locked into this physical type of work. The doctors say he will need another hip replacement in 10 to 15 years if he stays in this line of work. Do you agree with these statements? -- B.M.

ANSWER: Let’s take them one by one.

The most common cause of hip disease requiring hip replacement is osteoarthritis of the hips, but it is quite unusual to see someone of your son’s age require a hip replacement. Alcohol is not a recognized risk factor for osteoarthritis of the hips, but it is a known underlying cause of a much less-common condition: osteonecrosis of the hips, also called avascular necrosis.

The more a person drinks, the more likely they are to get this rare condition, even though most heavy drinkers will never get this condition. Not every person with osteonecrosis of the hip will require a hip replacement. It is frequent to have both sides of the hip affected with disease.

Untreated congenital hip dysplasia may also lead to severe hip damage requiring a total hip replacement, and it is also one cause I see in a person of your son’s age.

Prognosis after a modern hip replacement is very good. More than 90% of people are doing well, pain-free and without complications 15 years after surgery takes place. Of course, some kinds of activities such as heavy lifting and high-impact movements could make the surgical prosthetics wear out faster, but regular activities such as walking, stair climbing and most sports that are not highintensity or high-impact can be done without damage to the prosthetic.

Although further alcohol use will not affect the prosthetic hips or other bones, many other body systems are very much affected by alcohol. So, if he has been a heavy drinker for some time, it is now time to stop. His doctors can help him find many available resources.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT PTSD

Is PTSD a recent phenomenon? - PTSD has been around as long as there have been traumatic events, though its name is more recent. The APA notes that PTSD has been known by various names in the past, including “shell shock” and “combat fatigue.” These names are no longer used in part because they give the impression that post-traumatic stress is exclusive to combat veterans. That’s a misperception, as the Sidran Institute, a nonprofit organization that helps people understand and recover from PTSD, notes PTSD will affect one in 13 people in the United States and 9 percent of Canadians at some point in their lives.

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. Whileinflammationisprotectiveby nature, sometimesaninflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH

The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

WHAT IS A TRUST?

A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust.

There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS

Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement.

Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible.

Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career.

The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.
