TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING

Account for the temperature - Temperature will go a long way toward improving or compromising comfort. Choose sleeping bags rated for the temperature. If you’ll be doing plenty of fall or winter camping, you’ll have a place to sleep that’s designed to be used at the time of year you’re camping. When sleeping in warm temperatures, dress so you can add or remove layers as needed. A portable, battery-operated fan also can be a game-changer if it is hot and stuffy in the tent.

Stay with the vehicle. Once you have called for help and set up flares or triangles, stay with the vehicle, though do so at a safe enough distance so you are not in harm’s way.

Items to include in your automotive emergency kit

Miscellaneous items: Some items that may not seem synonymous with road trips can come in handy should you find yourself in an emergency. Pack a blanket so you and your passengers can stay warm should your car break down at night. In addition, pack some energy bars and bottled water so no one gets too hungry or thirsty while waiting for help to arrive. It’s also good to keep a pair of work gloves in your car so you can still use your tools or change a tire when the temperatures dip or your hands get sweaty on hot days.

TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE

Put the cell phone down. Your car is not a mobile office. Cell phones are distracting. Designate your time in the car as “quiet time.” If you must talk on the phone, get a headset -- as now required by many state laws -- so that both your hands remain on the steering wheel.

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION

Get professional advice: Many homeowners are under the impression that doing the work themselves can save a considerable amount of money. This may be the case for homeowners with renovation experience. But by and large, professional contractors are an asset to any renovation. They can provide a realistic overview of the project, map out projected costs, point out areas that could be troublesome, and may have industry contacts that can keep supply costs low.Even if a homeowner will do a portion of the job, a contractor can do the bulk of the work and keep the project on budget.

ITEMS TO IMPROVE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES

Outdoor kitchens allow homeowners to prepare more than just traditional backyard barbecue fare. A standalone charcoal grill in the backyard might get the job done, but a built-in gas grill complete with burners and surrounding granite countertop makes for a more functional outdoor entertaining space.

TURN YOUR YARD INTO A VACATION-WORTHY OASIS

Pools are the ultimate spots to cool off on hot days.An elaborately shaped inground pool can blend in with the landscape and offer the ultimate hang-out zone. However, above-ground pools also serve the purpose and are more budget-friendly. Stock tank pools are popular among those who want minimal pool expenditure or have small spaces to work with. Stock tanks are metal vessels traditionally used as watering holes for livestock. They also can be “adult kiddie pools” when combined with some plumbing.Galvanized steel frames make them sturdy. With floats and other accessories, they can become the perfect oasis.

have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

PAW’S CORNER

My Cat Follows Me Everywhere

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a cat from a shelter just before anksgiving of last year. Blue is a beautiful boy who settled right into my home. He’s very well socialized and doesn’t even claw the furniture. However, he follows me everywhere! Even to the bathroom -- I have to close the door in his face. At night, he meows and paws at my bedroom door. He runs under the bed when I leave the house, and he sulks for quite a while when I return. How can I stop his clingy ways? -- Beth in Syracuse, New York

DEAR BETH: ere’s a ne line between “cuddly” and “clingy,” and Blue has hopped right over it. If it helps, know that you’re not alone. Studies over the past decade show that cats bond to their humans much more strongly than we thought. Underneath that aloof exterior is a loyal heart of gold.

Cats who’ve had to spend time in a shelter may become overly clingy once they reach their forever home. ey’re nally with a forever family, and they don’t want to let go! It’s also tempting to give in to their demands for treats or to take over your bedroom to make up for their lost time.

Keep enforcing boundaries, but try to introduce positive stimuli before and a er you shut him out of the bathroom or bedroom. Two important factors to be aware of are: 1. A daily routine and 2. Combatting boredom. Commit to spending time with your cat before leaving for work, a er returning and before going to bed. Incorporate play, using toys or laser pointers that he can chase.

Don’t give up. You and Blue will gure out a routine and comfort level that works for both of you.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS

RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills.

FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

- Village of LimaSANITARY SEWER LEAK DETECTION TESTING NOTIFICATION

Beginning on June 19th, 2023, the Village of Lima will be conducting leakage testing on the sanitary sewer system located within the Village. is test is being conducted as part of a study to locate and identify areas of ground and surface water entering the Sanitary Sewer System. is e ort will help to reduce sanitary sewer ow volumes and operating costs at the Waste Water Treatment Facility. It is anticipated that this testing will take approximately two weeks and end on June 29th, 2023.

During the test, a non-toxic smoke will be blown into the sanitary sewer system to reveal leaks where storm water and surface waters may be entering the sewer. e smoke that is utilized for this testing is manufactured speci cally for this purpose, and it leaves no residual odor or stains, and has no adverse a ect on plants or animals. It does have a distinctive, but not unpleasant, temporary odor. e visible smoke and odor only lasts a few minutes, where ventilation is adequate.

To conduct the test, smoke will be introduced at speci c sanitary sewer manholes located on the streets. During the test, personnel will conduct a visual observation along streets and around individual homes, for smoke exiting storm sewers, roof gutters, and other areas which may be connected to the sanitary sewer system.

Smoke should not enter your home unless the plumbing is defective or if your home contains drains which are infrequently used. Several days prior to June 19th, 2023, please pour or run water down all drains in your home or building to assure that drain traps are lled and in working order.

Please feel free to contact the Village Clerk at (585) 624-2210 if you have any questions regarding this noti cation.

THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES

Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.

Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas. Further For Reliable Appliance Service!

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE

Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, theyshouldbeputinplacebeforeusetopreventfurtherinjury.

Bout of Pneumonia

Leads to Shocking Breast Cancer Diagnosis

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 73-year-old wife has been diligent in getting her mammograms done, plus blood tests and doctor’s visits every three months. In November 2021, she came down with what seemed like a very bad cold that was actually confirmed by X-ray to be pneumonia. After two rounds of different antibiotics, she had lost 35 pounds, and it left her with weakness and a lingering cough. A CT scan later indicated that she “either has cancer or had cancer in the past.”

Multiple tests later, it was determined that there was a tumor at the 12:00 position in her breast and a tumor in her stomach that had spread to her pelvis and bones in her legs. She started taking letrozole and Ibrance, and although extreme fatigue is the most common side effect, they appear to be working.

My question is, how could this initial breast cancer have gone undetected for some time with all of the regular testing and not set off alarms? As bad as the pneumonia was, it allowed her to receive a diagnosis of a disease that eluded detection by current screening methods and very good physicians. -- Anon.

ANSWER: I am so very sorry to hear about your wife. Breast cancer is not just one disease. We think of breast cancer as something that can be easily cured if it is found early, but if you wait too late, it becomes difficult or impossible to cure. Some breast cancers do act that way, but others are much more indolent -- they grow slowly and may never get to the point where they threaten a person’s life.

Unfortunately, there are some breast cancers that can become metastatic (spreading to different sites such as the lymph nodes, bones, liver or lungs) before they are detectable at all by even the most sensitive tests, such as a mammogram or MRI. By the time they are found, because of symptoms, they are incurable by surgery and require systemic treatments like chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.

Most metastatic breast cancer is incurable, but newer treatments have improved life expectancy, with the average being three years. Screening for breast cancer is unable to save all lives. More effective treatment, in combination with regular screening, will be necessary to continue to progress against this horrible disease.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Now accepting new patients

GLUTEN-FREE IS MORE THAN A TREND

When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements.

We are trying to contact all patients who missed their appointments during Covid. Please call our o ce if you do not have your cleaning recall schedule. ank you for your patience. Please remain safe and healthy.

Flower Meanings

If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS

Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learnedtoplaythetrumpetwithout vibrato, which Biography.com notesmarkedadeparturefromthe style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

DID YOU KNOW? Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

Summer tip for Seniors

Be Mindful of Outdoor Activities

Engaging in outdoor activities is a great way to enjoy summer, but it’s important for seniors to be mindful of their limitations. Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours to prevent exhaustion and heatstroke. Plan outdoor activities in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Take breaks in shaded areas and listen to your body. Stay active with low-impact exercises like walking or swimming, which provide a refreshing way to beat the heat. Remember to consult your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during which the heart can beat too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs when rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, which consists of the heart’s two upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, when a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. While that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s two lower chambers, and this prevents the lower and upper chambers from working together effectively. Though AF does not always produce noticeable symptoms, some people with AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially when the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

Q&A Master Gardeners

I have a row of 4-5 year old lilacs with a fence around it to ward off deer. The plants are outgrowing the fenced area. At what point are they safe to leave unfenced and have the deer not devour them? When we attempted to open them a couple of years ago, the deer devoured the lower 3-4 feet. We don’t want that to happen again of course.Do we just keep expanding the fencing forever? Ihaveplentifuldeerwhodon’tusually bother my mature lilacs, so you will notneedafenceforever. Thedeerwill eatyounggrowth, butoncetheplants mature the growth isn’t attractive to

them. It will be a gradual process. Maturesizeforalilacisabout12feet. I’m not sure about their current size. Have you tried a deterrent spray? The most effective sprays contain egg solids,Liquid Fence and Deer Out are two examples. These products will probably reduce the damage, but not prevent all damage. Usually, deer will cause the most damage just as leaves emerge, so spraying the bare branches should reduce damage.

We are building a 3ft high berm of dirt in front of some black walnut trees to act as a barrier and shield. The area

Extension, Livingston County

in front of the black walnut trees is sunny most of the day. We plan on planting either forsythia or lilac bushes on the top of the berm since they are fast growing and can grow to a height of 8ft. Any suggestion on what else might work as a good 8-12ft barrier. We are also looking for a fast-growing ground cover to plant on the sides of the berm so we don’t have to

weed it. Any suggestions for the ground cover? Thanks!

Handicap

Why? Why can you spend an hour working out but cannot walk 10 feet to the locker room to change your clothes? This is a common occurrence at the [local town] rec center where someone occupies the handicap stall in the ladies room to change their clothes while a woman with a walker is standing waiting to use the facility. I am so tired of how selfish and inconsiderate people can be and establishments who won’t post reminders to inconsiderate people to use locker rooms.

Don’t judge us!

To the elderly woman at [local dog park] with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. You have a lot of nerve to say, to my husband, that we need to take better care of our fur baby! No dog is more loved or better cared for than ours. Just because the dogs had two brief scuffles, and my dog proved herself dominant both times, is no reason to bash the care that we give to our girl. You don’t know us and we don’t want to know you. We are just fellow dog owners. Please take the time to read the dog park rules. Scuffles occur all the time because dogs will be dogs. Only dogs under 25 lbs.belong on the small dog side. You break that rule. No brushing or grooming of dogs is permitted. You break that rule. The rules, however, do not say that you can’t call other dog owners names, so on that one, you are just guilty of being rude!

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS

Showcase how you have adapted in the past. Much of the business world moves at a breakneck pace. That pace has become even faster thanks to advancementsintechnologythatroutinelyaffecthowbusinessesoperate. Even if you have never before changed careers, that does not mean you have not adapted to change. Make a list of the changes your employers have instituted throughout your career, highlighting how you adapted to those changes and benefitted from them in their aftermath.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE

Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achievedbygoingtoinformational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

Get out of the house. Digital age networking is not limited to digital connections. Meetup.com encourages like-minded men and women to get together with real people in real life, using the internet to facilitate such connections. Men and women who sign up can use Meetup.com to connect with local professionals in their industries, attend industryspecific events and even establish their own meetup groups. A medium such as Meetup.com is great for individuals of all ages, but it might be especially valuable to established professionals looking to combine digital age networking with the more traditional networking they’re accustomed to.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
