How else can drivers improve visibility?

In addition to replacing headlight bulbs in pairs every two to three years, drivers can take the following proactive measures to reduce the likelihood that their vision will be compromised while on the road.

• Replace worn out wiper blades. Wiper blades need to be changed each season or in three-month intervals. Rubber wiper blades can grow brittle rather quickly, potentially compromising driver visibility at times when they need their vision to be as strong as possible, such as when rain or snow is falling.

• Clean interior glass and mirrors. Over time, interior glass can develop a film-like buildup that reduces vision and creates hazy reflections from the sun. Smokers may notice such buildup is especially thick in their vehicles. Periodically clean interior glass and mirrors to prevent this film from compromising your vision.

• Don’t hang accessories in your vehicle. Fuzzy dice, photos and other items hung on rearview mirrors can prove distracting and block you from seeing the road.

Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy. siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised.

Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

Paula Martindale Longacre, age 60 of Geneseo, passed away peacefully and went to meet her Maker on Sunday,July 23,2023.Paula was born on March 7, 1963 in Wayland. She was the daughter of the late Patricia (Abels) & Charles Martindale, Sr.On October 3,1992,she married the love of her life, Jan Longacre.

Paula was an active member of Webster Crossings UMC where she served as SS teacher,superintendent,a member of the United Methodist women’s group, Pastor Parish Relations Committee, the Shepherding Committee, Communion Steward, altar care, and assisted with church dinners.

Paula is survived by her loving and dedicated husband, Jan D. Longacre; daughter,Ti any (Nick Martinez) Longacre and siblings,Charles (Linda) Martindale Jr.,Timothy (Irene) Martindale, Donald (Lynne) Martindale, Melody ( omas) Bogdon, Patricia (James) Posick, and Aunt Armeeta Martindale. She also is survived by her mother-in-law, Gladys Longacre and sisters-in-law, Sheryl (Jonathan) Shenk, Katrine (Phil) Rose, and Dena Tompkins. She had many nieces, nephews, and dear friends including neighbors Heather and Jesse Kingston, their son Remy and dog Yeti.

Paula was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Martindale; father, Charles Martindale Sr.; sister, Carol Loop; brother, Roy Martindale; father-in-law, David Longacre, and their family dog, Quincy.

She was a graduate of Wayland Central School in 1981. She enjoyed gardening, arranging owers and center pieces, making wreaths, cardmaking, kayaking, hiking, spending time at the camper in PA, walking Yeti, planning special events such as tea parties, sleep overs for nieces and nephews, and time with family and friends.

She was employed in hotel management prior to becoming a stay-at home mom. She was an in-home day care provider, worked at Genesee Country Christian School, and most recently at Livonia Elementary School as an aide for children with special needs.

Jane was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Frances Laiosa; her husband, James David Hodges in 2017, her beloved grandson, Tanner James Hodges earlier this year and her younger brother, Bob Laiosa in 2020. She is survived by her two sons, James (Marijo) of Pi ard, NY and Joseph (Nadine) Hodges of Palm, PA; her granddaughters, Lily and Leah of Pi ard and her grandsons, Gabriel and Cole of Palm. She is also survived by her brother, David (Joyce) Laiosa of Albany and a brother-in-law, Leonard Hodges of Joppa MD. She has a great many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jane graduated from East High School in Rochester and worked performing clerical duties for such employers as Bene cial Finance and Loan, Werco Electric and for most of her career at Rochester Institute of Technology where started in the Bursar’s o ce and nished up in the Learning Development Center before retiring. After retiring Jane held part-time jobs at Sears and JC Penney at Marketplace Mall in Henrietta where she lived. Jane liked to work and be busy and made cherished friends wherever she worked. Jane was a great cook and took pride in keeping her family well fed. For fun Jane liked dancing to DO-WOP music, reading and spending time with her family. Jane was a proud wife, mom and grandma who was dearly loved. In her later years Jane resided at Morgan Estates where she was lovingly cared for and known to all as “Ma.”

Her Memorial Service was held ursday, July 27, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 W. Main St., Caledonia. Interment Bath National Cemetery.

Annie has participated in CP Rochester’s Day Habilitation for over 25 years, pursuing her unique interests and building skills while enjoying time with friends and staying connected in the community. Annie’s favorite activity is art; she can usually be found drawing in her coloring book and planning for her next art project. Annie loves to draw birds, owers, and all things Spring. She hangs up her art in her bedroom at home. She also loves to gi her art to her family, friends, and sta . Her most treasured piece is a butter y she drew in memory of her mom. “When I lost her, she said she was going to turn into a caterpillar and then she was going to be a butter y,” Annie said, re ecting on her mom and the inspiration behind her project.

Desiree is a tireless self-advocate and advocate for others with developmental disabilities. When Empowering People’s Independence (EPI) launched a new collaboration called EmpowHer Roc+ earlier this year for women over 21, she was excited to explore new interests. “I picked planting owers,” shared Desiree. “We each got a planter, picked out our own owers, and now they are sitting on my windowsill.”

Monthly meetings o er an inclusive and supportive space to develop personal goals, connect with like-minded individuals, and learn about di erent issues. is Fall, Desiree and the other women will showcase their leadership skills at a twoday camping retreat at Long Lake. ey will plan and give a presentation about their personal development throughout the year and the goals they achieved.

Jason works at a community-based vocational program at an agency that is one of nearly a dozen nonpro ts who rely on Medical Motor Service (MMS) to help thousands of people of all ages and abilities stay connected in the community, work, attend programs, go grocery shopping, visit the doctor, and more.

Over the past few months, Jason has been dealing with some very serious medical issues that have forced his day-to-day schedule to change up quite a bit. O en riding with his driver Vickie, being able to depend on MMS despite these changes has helped Jason retain a sense of normalcy and balance during a rather chaotic and stressful time. He continues to earn his paycheck while also receiving the much-needed social interaction with his peers as he works through every challenge.

Before she learned about the National MS Society (NMSS), Debbie walked a few miles each night a er work once dinner and the dishes were done. She bowled with League teammates each week, and played golf with her husband, Gabe, or friends. en one morning she woke up with vision so blurry she couldn’t drive. Soon her ability to walk, even stand, without assistance, was a ected, but it would be ve years before Debbie was diagnosed with MS and advised of possible treatments to slow the progression. Unfortunately, much of the damage was done.

It was then that Debbie and Gabe became aware of the MS Society and Debbie’s isolation turned into comaraderie. She learned about treatment options and support. For the last ten years, Debbie and Gabe have chaired the annual MS WALK in Canandaigua, raising almost $400,000 in support of MS awareness and research.

Timothy is almost 3 years old and has been on Monroe County’s Early Intervention (EI) waiting list for individual Speech erapy for almost a year. ere are currently over 1,000 kids on the waiting list. Last year Timothy’s mom, Lynne, discovered Rochester Hearing & Speech Center (RHSC). Timothy attends the TAALK Program (Teaching Age Appropriate Language for Kids), where he has been able to work with RHSC’s SpeechLanguage Pathologists along with ve other children once a week. At RHSC, they discovered Timothy also has sensory needs and he was connected with an Occupational erapist. He now receives Physical erapy and attends RHSC’s monthly EI Playdates, free to parents and children thanks to generous funding from e Golisano Foundation.

Lynne says Timothy loves the warm, welcoming environment and is making great progress, able to better communicate with his family and caregivers. She is grateful he can get all the support he needs in one convenient place.

A shout-out to Mamma G’s Restaurant in Henrietta: I ordered food to go for three and they got one order wrong, including forgetting the dessert. When I phoned to see if it could be corrected, they not only obliged cheerfully, but also provided the replacement food completely for free, which included a main course. If only more businesses engaged in these practices! We all make mistakes, but these folks were bent on correcting their error, and doing it pleasantly and promptly. Yard Sale Thief

On July 8th we were having a neighborly yard sale in [local town]. Around noon we had a torrential downpour. I had tarped two tables with items that could not get wet. Other items were on another table and the ground which could get wet. We went into the house to get out of the rain. My wife had looked out the window and said a woman who had a black SUV was putting a gas can in her car. Then she said I think she is putting it back on the ground. After the rain stopped we went out to find out that over $150.00 worth of items were stolen. I never expected this at a yard sale. Yes, I should have kept watch over it continuously.

Dogs at music in the park

We are senior citizens and enjoy going to listen to the music in the park. We really don’t know why people insist on bringing their dogs. There are so many of us who go to listen to the music, not watch their dogs. It is very annoying. Please people, leave you mutts home.

Lately I have been exposed to this new theory that a “popping,” like a shot gun, muffler is cool. It scares me when I’m in my yard. Sounds like a drive-by out here in God’s country. I can only imagine what that back pressure is doing internally to your engine. Backfires are not cool. Why would you want everyone noticing you? I sure hope you don’t make any bad choices, bc you would be easily identified. Motorcycles seem much louder lately also, and there’s a generation that isn’t sure when and how to shift. The NDC reports that cochlear implants are not necessarily ideal for everyone with significant hearing loss. That’s because no two brains are the same, and it’s difficult to predict how well a given person’s brain will interpret the new auditory signals the implant is sending. In addition, the NDC notes that certain types of hearing loss cannot be remedied with cochlear implants.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO

4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper

2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.

To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

Doctors Won’t Prescribe Hormone Therapy to Woman Over 60

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recently published column, you stated, “As always, the decision belongs to the patient,” while addressing a concern about the benefits and risks of stopping a statin drug. Oh, really? Then, why is it that, once I turned 60, not a single doctor will prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to stop my debilitating post-menopausal symptoms? After suffering from menopausal symptoms starting at age 42, I was finally prescribed HRT at age 57. What relief I felt, as it was the only remedy to alleviate my hot flashes, weight gain, lack of sleep and vaginal dryness.

Once I hit 60, I was ordered to stop HRT, and no one since will prescribe it for me now. I am 66, suffer from hot flashes daily and have my sleep interrupted at least five times a night with terrible night sweats. I have tried just about every over-the-counter offering with zero effectiveness.

I will gladly trade the greater risk of heart attack and stroke, and the possible shorter life span, for relief from symptoms that affect my daily quality of life. Clearly, the choice is not mine, because if I had a choice, I would ask for continued prescriptions of HRT to give me relief. Why don’t I have that choice as a patient? -- R.M.T.

ANSWER: A patient always has the right to refuse a treatment recommended from a physician. However, the physician has the obligation to consider the risks and benefits of a treatment, and is not obliged to prescribe a treatment that they do not think is appropriate.

If a patient asks me for a treatment that has been shown to be ineffective and has the potential for serious adverse effects, I don’t prescribe it, but will work with the patient to find alternative treatments. For example, some nonhormonal prescription treatments are moderately effective for hot flashes and sleep disturbance, and topical estrogen is very effective for vaginal dryness.

However, the case of HRT for symptoms of menopause is more complicated, because estrogen is the most effective treatment we have for menopausal symptoms, particularly for hot flashes. There are risks to HRT, but the benefits for some women are so great that they are willing to accept some risks.

You mentioned the risk of heart disease and stroke. A landmark study called the Women’s Health Initiative helped to define and quantify those (and other) risks. Its effect has been to dramatically reduce the prescribing of menopausal hormone therapy, but the results should not be interpreted to mean that hormone treatment is always inappropriate, even in women who are in their mid-60s, where risks are higher.

Moreover, a woman’s entire health status should be considered when deciding whether to prescribe hormone treatments. In women with a history of an estrogen-dependent tumor (like many breast cancers), a history of a blood clot or a stroke, or a few other issues, the harm almost certainly outweighs the benefits. Otherwise, a wise clinician looks at the patient’s risk for heart disease, blood clots and similar conditions. Women at a very high risk for heart disease should probably avoid estrogen. Using lower-dose estrogen by patch (rather than pills) is wise for women at moderate risk, such as those who are in their 60s.

Physicians do not want to prescribe medications that will harm their patients, and most have stopped prescribing menopausal hormone therapy entirely for women, to prevent disease. However, it still has a role in treating symptoms. I recommend you seek out an expert in treatment of menopausal treatments and have a frank discussion about your willingness to assume risk in order to have a better quality of life.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function.Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances,the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned.Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise,though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

CHIMNEY MAINTENANCE A PART OF HOME SAFETY

Even though chimneys do not require daily upkeep, regular maintenance efforts help chimneys operate safely and prevent deaths and injuries while protecting homes from fire.

Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents.

Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector. The National Vital Statistics System says that, in 2015, 393 deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen.

Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible. With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC

Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

Adopting a “War Dog”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just watched an older movie about a military dog, called “Max.” How can I adopt a dog like that? -- T.T. via email

DEAR T.T.: While “Max” is a compelling movie, adopting a former military working dog takes a fair amount of research on your part, and the ability to care for dogs that have high energy and need plenty of attention and continuing training. All military dog adoptions are handled through the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Adoption Program at Lackland AFB in Texas.

Dogs eligible for adoption were retired due to age, injury or sickness. Not all dogs saw combat. Some worked in national security, while others were trained as working dogs but did not meet the standards for military service.

Be prepared for a long wait a er submitting the application -- up to a year or more. First priority for adoption goes to law-enforcement agencies, if the dog is still t for duty. If not, the dog’s handler can adopt it. Only a er that do dogs become available for adoption to civilians. Some dogs, sadly, are not adoptable due to temperament or severe injuries.

In addition to patience, be aware that you don’t have control over what type of dog is made available; although you can state your preference on the application. Be prepared for some pre-adoption expenses as well: If selected to adopt a MWD, you’ll need to travel to where the dog is being kept (most likely, Lackland) at least twice -- once to be interviewed and meet the dog, and again to pick it up if your application is approved.
