DID YOU KNOW? Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus. Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings Gold Standard Publication

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Late Relapse Possible in Breast Cancer Patients

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Accepting New Patients.

Lakeville

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read another sad story about a woman who had breast cancer, fought it and seemed to win, but after five years, it came back and took her life. The same sequence of events happened to my wife two years ago. She fought the second round of cancer for a year and a half, but it was just about everywhere. What is this connection between the initial breast cancer occurrence and it coming back five or six years later even more widespread throughout the body? Is screening stepped up during that period? -- Anon. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your wife. With most cancers, no evidence of disease five years out from diagnosis usually means a cure, that the person will not have a recurrence of that particular cancer, although people who’ve had one cancer are at a higher risk of developing a second, unrelated cancer. Breast cancer is one of the exceptions. Late recurrences (after five years) are possible, even very late recurrences. I have seen 20 years afterward, and there are reports of even longer. Although the reasons why breast cancer seems to hide for many years are not known precisely, we do know some risk factors for recurrence: Larger tumors are more likely to recur. Those with positive lymph nodes are at high risk, and women with estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors are more likely to experience recurrence. Screening is absolutely appropriate in women who have had breast cancer. There is not a consensus about the type and frequency of screening, but many experts choose yearly mammography. Breast MRI has been considered, but it has not been proven to be better in women with a history of breast cancer. A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, abstinence from smoking and minimal alcohol intake, has been shown to reduce cancer risk in women with a history of breast cancer.

Consult with your dentist. Dental hygienists and dentists are experienced at cleaning teeth that have braces. Typical visits for routine cleanings will not be much different than visits without braces. The staff will take X-rays and conduct a thorough examination of the teeth. Hygienists know how to manipulate cleaning tools around braces to clean effectively. Very often, cavities can be filled and even root canals performed with braces on teeth, so there’s no need to worry. Should braces be in the way, the dentist can work with the orthodontist and have a bracket temporarily removed and replaced to facilitate treatment.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SIGNS A ROOF NEEDS REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT Roof age: The age of the roof is a major factor in determining if it will need to be replaced or if repairs can be made to isolated damage. Individuals who live in neighborhoods where neighbors are now replacing roofs will likely find it is time to consult a roofing company. Homeowners also can check to see if they have any receipts that indicate the roof’s installation date so they have an idea about its age.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

POLL How likely are you to give money towards Ukraine relief for food, clothing & shelter? • Yes! • No! Poll Ends 03-15-22

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Poll Ended 03-08-22 Some say the United States should not send troops into the Russia-Ukraine conflict because allegedly Ukraine is of strategic importance to the United States, many Americans do not want a war, and the danger of a superpower confrontation. Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine?

S E V RA Above & Beyond While my husband and I were at Maple Tree Inn this past weekend, we happened to witness a business that went above and beyond for a customer who was in great distress. They didn’t have to do what they did, and most businesses wouldn’t have. It was very heartwarming to see, and I for one applaud them. A great example of customer service and compassion. My Fair Lady Cheers to the Rochester Broadway Theatre League for bringing to Rochester the musical “My Fair Lady.” What a wonderful show it was, and I liked it even better than the original movie! It was that good! March Madness What a wonderful time of year it is for all of us hoop fans - it’s March Madness! Shout Out! Shout out to all of the fire, EMT, and other emergency responders for their hard work during the wind storm on Sunday. You are appreciated!

No Denying I’m confused regarding this back and forth about global warming. Who’s denying it? We all know it’s changing. The only question is how much does man really impact these changes? Sure, there’s a lot we can do to lessen our impact, but the changes of warming and cooling have been proven over and over again to be a part of our planet’s history. So, who’s denying it? Local Dog Walker It is great that you pick up after your dog when you walk our local neighborhood. However, it would be really great if you also took that little black bag back home with you! Today while walking, one of the people in the neighborhood put your 10 bags (yes 10 bags), in the middle of the sidewalk and this from just a short distance of a walk for most of us. We are all looking for you, and when we find you, the local police and dog warden will also know you. Why is it so hard to take the bag back home with you like a responsible person? The people’s lawns that you leave the little packages on are really tired of them. There is a law, you know, and you are not above it. We know it is from one person, and everyone is on the look out for you. Clean up and take your bags home. This is also your neighborhood, but you are not a good neighbor, that is for sure. Choices In response to Choose One: No, we should use either paper or plastic, metal or glass wherever appropriate. Paper bags, plastic cars? Yes, I hate to see a tree come down, but trees (and wood and paper) are renewable resources; oil is not. Paper is biodegradable; plastic is not. It’s that simple. We should choose the ones that are least damaging to the environment case by case.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Before You Sign Up for Senior Discounts We all want to save a dollar every place we can. Discounts aimed at seniors are a good way to get our attention, but now and then it’s just not a good idea to sign up. For example, if you’re low income, Amazon Prime offers a reduced-price membership. With Prime you get free shipping, access to movies and music, and more. Your membership is only $5.95 per month -- after you furnish an image of your Social Security, Medicaid (not Medicare), TANF or SNAP card. You’ll need to renew this every year to keep getting the discount to ensure you’re still on the program. You can stay on this reduced rate for four years. The dilemma is that you’re providing your personal information -- Medicaid number, Social Security number and so on -- to people you don’t know. Where does that information end up? If you cancel your membership, is that information destroyed? Reduced prescription costs are available at certain drugstore chains, but generally on a limited basis, perhaps one day per month. One chain will offer to let you link a new account with them to your existing AARP membership. With another one, should you prefer not to give them your email address, they’re more than happy to take your name and phone number instead. A number of phone companies have reduced plans for seniors. But they do verify your age. With two of them you need to go into the store with a valid ID. With another they’ll use the information they already have on file from when you started your original service with them. How

securely have they kept that information? Before you snap up a senior discount deal, consider what you need to give up to get that discount. Think about whether the information you give can be used for identity theft. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Beef Bundles in Stock! Arriving March 15th. They will include Steaks, Patties and Roasts. Price ranges from $120 to $200 Pick up hours are Mon.-Sat. 3-5pm

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When my grandmother passed away last fall, she left behind two beautiful cats. No one else in the family wanted to take care of them, so I took them in. However, I’m financially unable to care for them long-term, and the apartment complex I live in does not allow pets. I’m on borrowed time (and money) at this point, and praying that my apartment manager doesn’t find out about the cats. I contacted a shelter nearby to find out if they will accept the cats. They said there is a “surrender fee” of $200. No way can I pay that; I’m on a fixed income. What alternatives do I have? -- Sherrie R., via email DEAR SHERRIE: I’m sorry to hear about your predicament. You have extended your home and finances to care for two cats in need, and I salute you for it. But you’re right: the current situation is not ideal for you or the cats. When preparing to surrender a pet, the receiving shelter will request that you try every possible option first. Many shelters will provide advice and limited assistance for pet owners going through this. One option would be for you to contact family members and friends directly (not on public social media posts) to ask if they would be able to adopt the cats. If a surrender to the shelter is the last resort, contact your family to see if they can chip in for the surrender fees. After all, you’ve already taken on the cost of food, supplies and maybe medical care for them. You’ve taken on the risk of losing your lease, too. DANSVILLE POP UP PANTRY TO PROVIDE MUCH-NEEDED FOOD ON MONDAY BY A M A N DA D U D E K

I

t’s no secret that the advent of the Covid pandemic has only created more food insecurity, both among those in need and among those who had not previously been struggling. As the first quarter of 2022 draws to a close, many families continue to face food insecurity thanks to rising food costs, the economy, and the state of global markets, among other factors. In areas like Livingston County for example, the most recent census data shows just over 10% of families live in poverty. To combat food insecurity in and around the Dansville area, UR Medicine/Noyes Health and The Hornell Area Family YMCA have joined together to host a Pop Up Pantry on Monday, March 14th. The pantry event will be held at Babcock Park from 4PM to 6PM. This extraordinarily necessary effort has received support from the entire community, including such community partners as TOPS Friendly Markets, Dansville Lions Club International, FoodLink, Dansville Rotary Club International, and Rentals to Go. Dansville’s Pop Up Pantry expects to distribute fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products, and other perishable and nonperishable foods. Spearheading this event are Tara Coffey, Manager of Community Outreach Services at UR Medicine | Noyes Health, Shane Marble, intern from Alfred University, and Julie Camacho, Dansville Branch Coordinator at Hornell Area Family YMCA. “Foodlink expects to provide a large truck fi lled with approximately 11-12 pallets, an abundance of food,” Coffey shared, also recognizing community outreach support from the United Way. She explained that several members of the community have wished to hold such an event for some time, with the last being held more than a year ago. “We wanted to hold an event in the fall, but there was no way we could do something this big without more planning,” Coffey explained. “Our goal is to feed 100 families.”

“I have been working here for about 20 years, and I have seen the need. It is hugely important for everyone out there, especially with Covid which has destroyed savings and disrupted support networks.” - Tara Coffey

Shane Marble, an Alfred State intern working with Coffey, has been essential in laying the groundwork for Dansville’s upcoming Pop Up Pantry. “I was born and raised in Dansville,” said Marble, an adult student in the fi nal semester of his Human Services Management degree. When Marble looked for more to do, Coffey suggested the Pop Up Pantry. Marble was immediately invested.

“Helping people is my passion. I grew up in a single-parent home, so I know what it is like to struggle for food,” he said, explaining how he jumped right in. “I think the first day [Coffey] gave [this project] to me, I talked with both the Chief of Police and the Mayor to see if we would be able to hold the event at Babcock.” “I spoke with Dansville Fire Chief Brian Wood to get those important permissions,” Marble continued. “I also spoke with Laura Cutting, a social worker at Dansville Central School. She gave me a whole list of people to contact, such as the Rotary, Lions Club, and Boy Scouts. Now, we have about 20 volunteers signed up for the event with 10 more coming at this point. The whole town really jumped on it with the Dansville Lions Club committing seven volunteers right off the bat: our biggest bunch!”

Marble explained that Coffey has been handling the administrative planning and paperwork for the event. Meanwhile, Dansville YMCA Coordinator Julie Camacho became certified to be the Pop Up Pantry coordinator on the ground during the event. “We are trying to build a solid foundation so that when my internship is up, we have a reliable base of names, numbers, and volunteers to continue these events on a bi-monthly basis,” Marble concluded. Coffey and Marble both clearly see such food distribution events as ongoing necessities. “The Livingston County Department of Health is currently conducting a food insecurity survey,” explained Coffey. “I have been working here for about 20 years, and I have seen the need. It is hugely important for everyone out there, especially with Covid, which has destroyed savings and disrupted support networks.” Coffey credits Marble for his efforts in making the event a reality. “I believe we couldn’t make this happen without Shane!” affirmed Coffey. Her sentiments of gratitude extend to the whole community, as well. “All of the organizations in Dansville have been so willing to step up,” said Coffey as Marble agreed. “I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to them and to all of our volunteers for making this all happen.” This is a drive thru event; trunks must be able to be opened. Boxes and bags will not be included. If you would like your food bagged or boxed, please bring some with you. For additional questions, please email Julie Camacho jcamacho@hornellymca.com

COPING WITH THE SUICIDE OF A LOVED ONE Honor the deceased. Don’t hesitate to share memories, photos and stories about your loved one who committed suicide. The Suicide Prevention Lifeline notes that some people find it helpful to write to a lost loved one, as doing so can provide a means to say some of the things survivors were unable to say before a loved one’s death.

Gabriel David Crissy 02/27/2022 Gabriel was born in Rochester, NY at Strong Memorial Hospital on September 4, 2004. He spent his younger years through middle school living in Avon, New York. As with many children these days, he was able to participate in various sporting activities from soccer to baseball, swimming to wrestling and also taekwondo. He also participated in the drama program while there. His family relocated to Denver, NC in 2018 and he was most recently a member of the choir and drama programs at North Lincoln High School. Yearly trips to the Adirondacks were a highlight of Gabriel’s summers where he thoroughly enjoyed kayaking, canoeing, fishing and hiking. In North Carolina, he enjoyed hosting his friends at his home where Nerf wars went on for hours, grappled each other in the sand pit and conversational campfires. At family events, Gabriel relished the role of activity coordinator with his cousins. He was active in online gaming with friends and also adhered to a strict Friday night schedule of D&D with his sister and her cohort of college friends. Gabriel was a beacon to so many around him. Holding the door for everyone, asking how your day was and simply going through life with an overall cheery disposition was the face we knew. He was the handshake type to acquaintances but genuine Gabriel hugs were frequently distributed. When he hugged you, you knew how much you were loved. Based on the outpouring of emotion we have seen in such a short time, he touched many lives and his impact will be felt for some time. He is survived by his parents, Nathalie and Luke, older sister, Isabella and grandparents, Mercedes and Edward Hanbach. There are many, many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews who also grieve his departure. At the family’s request, there will be no formal calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline would be graciously acknowledged. https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/. COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE Reach out to others. Grief often can turn a person inward, and your feelings may be bottled up. Talking about your emotions, whether it’s with a trusted friend or even a therapist, may help. Online message boards that cover grief and loss may provide the support you need. Leaning on others who have been in your shoes may help you recover more quickly. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Tips on planning a memorial service • Set the date and time. Memorial services should be planned in consideration of any family members who have traveled from out of town. Set a date close enough to the funeral or anniversary event that visiting friends and family can attend. •␣Choose a location. Arrange a memorial service at a location that is large enough to accommodate the number of people you’ve invited. Know how many chairs you need, tables for food and arrangements and a podium for a guestbook. •␣Compile a guest list and send out the invitations. Stay organized when planning a memorial service by making a list of all friends and loved ones of the deceased for sending out invitations. •␣Personalize decorations and music. Make the memorial service a reflection of the person whose memory you’re honoring by choosing decorations and music the individual would have liked. Use floral arrangements with the person’s favorite flowers or colors and compile a play list of favorite songs or types of music to be played throughout the service. •␣Get input from loved ones. Ask friends and family members of the deceased individual for input about special touches that will best help remember their loved one. •␣Arrange for guest speakers. A key component of many memorial services is having a series of guest speakers who can provide their personal perspective on the deceased person’s life and the legacy being left behind.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Lettuce will last longer if you store it in the crisper drawer in a clean paper bag. * “Try using an empty glass wine bottle (remove the label) for rolling out pie crust or any dough. It is the best thing I’ve ever used ... nothing sticks to the glass, unlike my wooden rolling pin, which is now in the back of my cabinet for good after using it for decades!” -- L.F. in Texas * Peas, spinach, sweet potato, squash and carrots can be pureed and added to baked goods to increase fiber and nutrients. They are especially useful in soups to thicken a broth without adding fat. You can sneak some veggies into unexpected places, too -- like cookies, pancake batter and pasta dishes, or make a flavorful sandwich spread.
