I hear garlic is easy to grow around here. Do you have any tips for success?

Those who grow ‘their own’ know that homegrown produce tastes better than those bought at supermarket. This is also true for garlic! Garlic is one of the easiest vegetables to grow if a few critical requirements such as good soil, sufficient moisture, and correct planting and harvesting time are met.

This year’s spring was dry and irrigating the garlic helped greatly to keep it healthy while sizing up the bulbs. The leaf mold mulch we used kept the moisture in until the rains began in June. Coming July, it’s time to harvest your garlic crop!

There are two main types of garlic:

hardneck and softneck. Hardnecks form fewer but bigger cloves located around a hard central stem. The stem develops a curling top called a scape. Softneck garlic forms a higher number of cloves, the bigger ones are on the outside and smaller ones on the inside of the bulb. Softnecks tend to mature a week earlier than hardnecks. If you are growing Softneck Garlic, you need to look and see that at least 50% of it has fallen over and is laying on the ground. Then you know that your softneck garlic is ready to harvest.

Hardneck is usually ready in mid–July. Pull a few plants every few days and cut

a cross section of the bulb. Once you see space forming between the cloves and the central stem, your garlic is ready for harvest.

Harvest by prying up the entire plant with a garden fork or shovel. Don’t shake or bang against the ground, instead, remove the soil by rubbing it off gently with your fingers. Let the bulbs dry off thoroughly in a single layer in the sun on the ground for a couple of days. Hang

or lay them down on shelves, window screens etc. with a good air flow to dry. Clean off when fully dry 2-3 weeks after harvest. This is also time to cut the roots. Keep your garlic in a low humidity, wellventilated location with a temperature of 60 to 65*F.

CCE’s Agriculture Program offers a garlic growing class.Stay tuned for updates coming out soon at https://monroe.cce.cornell.edu/ events.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES

Playing with food: Grilling does not require much intervention. Repeatedly flipping and squeezing meat and poultry can cause flavorful juices to leak out. Then you’re left with dried-out food. Resist any urges to prod and poke food. And minimize how many times you lift the grill cover to take a peek, as that can cause temperatures to fluctuate. Use a thermometer to determine when food is done. And don’t forget that meat will still cook a bit after it’s taken off the grill.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE

Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs.

The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

HOW

STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

DID YOU KNOW?

The terms “hospice” and “palliative” are not interchangeable. Hospice care is a form of palliative care geared toward patients with terminal illnesses facing their final months or weeks of life. Palliative care, according to WebMD, aims to ease pain and provide help to people confronting a serious illness, even if it’s not necessarily life-threatening. Palliative care may include assistance for those with cancer, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, or any number of conditions. Illnesses can make it difficult to live life fully, and palliative care is used in conjunction with other treatments to improve quality of life.

The cost of a college education continues to rise. The College Board says the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015-2016 school year was $32,405 at private colleges, $9,410 for state residents at public colleges, and $23,893 for out-of-state residents attending public universities. The high cost of education compels many students to find ways to finance their education. ELITE U17 BOYS TEAM CONQUERS HELSINKI CUP

At the historic Vierumaki Sports Resort in the suburbs of Helsinki, Finland on July 7th, a remarkable soccer story unfolded with upstate NY ties. Sixteen talented soccer players hailing from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Idaho, Illinois, and the Dominican Republic formed the Northeast Rush Elite U17 Boys Team. eir mission: to represent the United States in the world’s largest youth soccer tournament, the Helsinki Cup, where over 1,700 teams from around the globe competed at various age levels.

e team faced a daunting challenge from the start. Just three weeks before the tournament, they recruited Coach Chris Horteales from Chicago to bring the diverse players together and create a cohesive unit. With only days to prepare, the pressure was on to see what this newly formed team could achieve.

Among the talented players was Carson Hamann, a versatile goalkeeper from Victor, and Tyler Koehne, a defender from Syracuse, both of whom played for the Syracuse Rush soccer organization on a Select team this season. Carson’s soccer journey began at the Rochester Sports Garden soccer tot program when he was veyearsold.Asyearspassed, hetransitionedfromrecreational to travel leagues and eventually to premier teams, culminating in this, his third season with Rush.

CarsonhasbeenVictor’sVarsitygoalkeepersince9thgrade.Last year, he made a crucial last-minute save in a penalty shootout that propelled his Rush team to advance in the State cup. Todd, Carson’s proud father, shared, “It certainly is exciting and nerve-wracking to be a goalkeeper’s parent. Goalkeepers are the last line of defense and o en the rst line of attack a er kicko .”

Beyond his goalkeeping skills, Carson’s experience in the position has granted him a strong sense of the eld and positioning. Onhislocaltravelteam, hedoesn’thesitatetocontributeo ensively, preferring the roles of striker and center defense, though his dad jokes about Carson having goalkeeper lungs.

WhenaskedabouttheHelsinkiCupexperience,Carsonrevealed that the team was initially nervous about competing against the predictedly tough South American teams. However, doubts were quickly dispelled as the teammates clicked and worked together as a united force. eir chemistry on the eld impressed other teams andspectators, withmanyassumingtheywereayouthproacademy team that had played together for years.

NortheastRushEliteU17Boysblazedthroughtheinitialrounds, going undefeated in Bracket A, with ve wins in ve matches, including three come-from-behind victories. is earned them a spot in the Elite BU17 quarter nals, where competition intensi ed. roughout the tournament, goalkeepers Jackson Gill and Carson Hamann split matches equally, each showcasing their skills on the eld. However, Coach Horteales made the tough call to entrust Carson Hamann with the Championship game goalkeeping duties.

With relentless determination, the Northeast Rush took the lead with a goal, holding onto their slim advantage until hal ime. However, the game took a dramatic turn as Iceland scored a late header, leveling the score at 1-1 and pushing the game into a shootout.

Hamann blocked two Iceland shots, demonstrating remarkable skill and nerve under pressure. e shootout extended to a second round, where once again, Carson’s goalkeeping shone, blocking Iceland’s h shot. en, Northeast Rush’s h shot sealed their victory.

Asagoalkeeper,Carsonappreciatedhisvantagepointintheback, allowing him to observe and direct his team. He loved witnessing their uid teamwork, the hallmark of their successful journey. Looking ahead, Carson prioritizes education while keeping his passion for soccer close to his heart. With aspirations to play soccer in college, he intends to stay committed to the sport throughout life.

For players aspiring to represent their nations on the global stage, Horteales shares valuable advice: Mental preparation is key, as the challenges faced in international tournaments can be overwhelming. e team’s determination and unyielding spirit set them apart from their opponents, he adds.

e Helsinki Cup o ered more than just erce competition. For the Northeast Rush Elite U17 Boys Team, Horteales and Hamann attest that it was an unforgettable experience of camaraderie, cultural exchange, and personal growth. e players and their families cherished the opportunity to compete against teams from diverse playing philosophies, and they embraced the challenges with a determined mindset. As they return home with the prestigious victory, the Northeast Rush team serves as an inspiration to all aspiring players, proving that with trust in one another and unwavering determination, anything is possible on the global soccer stage.

Here’s a tip

My father taught me all I know about working the grill -- even though it was his job! One tip that’s served me best is this simple beauty: Let the meat sear before you move it. Give it a chance to cook on one side well enough that it li s away from the grill. If it’s sticking, you probably need to leave it alone! Happy grilling.

“Kitchen stores sell grill brushes, but they can be expensive. I use a good-quality paintbrush from the hardware store for grilling only, and replace it a couple of times throughout grilling season. I nd it to be a better brush, and less expensive to boot!” -- B.F. in Illinois

Your grilled meats will be more moist and taste better if you let them rest for a few minutes a er you take them o the grill. It allows the meat to redistribute the natural juices. If you are worried about temperature, just cover the meat with foil.

BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS

It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms.

Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES

Venture off campus. Towns that rely heavily on colleges or universities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local businesses, including bars, restaurants and entertainment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Students can take advantage of these offerings to save on food and entertainment, which tend to be among the more pricey cost-of-living expenses college students contend with.

Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk.

The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus.

Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports.

Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following:

• Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com.

• Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans.

• Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky.

• Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time.

Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS

Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

* The earliest written record that mentions the practice of medicine is Hammurabi’s Code from the 18th century BC in Mesopotamia, which includes information for physicians about payments for successful treatments and punishments for medical failures. For example, payment was better for curing the wealthy, but failing to do so could result in the loss of a hand.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Heart Attacks Occur After Treatment of Infections

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mom had a throat and palate infection that was treated in 2017, and about two weeks later, she had a heart attack. In 2023, she had pneumonia, and was briefly hospitalized and treated, but again about two weeks later, she had another heart attack. We asked her cardiologist if there is a relationship between either the infections themselves or the treatment of infections and heart attacks, but he was not aware of any. This seems too unlikely to be a coincidence. What is your experience on this? -- A.C.S.

ANSWER: A heart attack happens when the demand for blood from the heart is greater than the ability of the blood vessels can provide. In practice, this almost always means that there are blockages in the blood vessels. However, an increase in the workload of the heart, such as strenuous exercise or an infection (fever tends to increase heart rate, and the blood flow from the heart usually increases with serious infection), can be what leads a person to have a heart attack. It’s possible that this is what happened with your mom. The timing of two weeks after the event is longer than expected, but it’s possible. Whether from chronic infection or inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation in the blood increases the risk of heart disease in the long term, so if there is a connection, and it’s not just coincidental, that would be the most likely cause. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote about the dangers of testosterone replacement in men over 70 in your column a few months ago. Could you please describe the dangers of this again?

My husband is 73 and injects testosterone every 10 days or so. He’s not feeling too well overall, but he doesn’t know why. He’s been to the cardiologist, but the studies came back fine. He says he feels nerves in his stomach and a bit of shortness of breath. He’s also tired and without much energy. -- E.D.

ANSWER: There are clear dangers with excess testosterone use, especially in older men. Some men use very high doses of testosterone or other androgens for muscle building, and this can cause heart damage, blood clots and stroke. I strongly do not recommend doing this, but it is generally used illicitly. By contrast, for men in whom testosterone therapy is given appropriately, the dangers are quite small, and in most men, the benefits outweigh the risks. Men should have a clear reason to receive testosterone therapy, such as having low bone density, low libido, loss of body hair, or development of breast tissue, in addition to repeatedly low testosterone levels (including a level taken between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. when testosterone levels are highest). In these men, the goal is to stabilize the testosterone level, and the risks of the catastrophic outcomes listed above appear to be very small, or even zero. Testosterone levels should also be measured during therapy. I can’t speculate on the cause behind your husband’s symptoms. Nonspecific symptoms, such as low energy, can be caused by low testosterone, but unless there are more specific symptoms of low testosterone, I generally do not recommend testosterone replacement.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Kia and Hyundai Thefts

With thefts of Kias and Hyundais on the rise, what can be done to stop this? Here’s my idea; If banks can place exploding dye packets in bags of money, why can’t a similar device be placed in vehicles? Safe for the owners but explode when attempts are made to steal a vehicle. Thus the criminals can be located. Simple idea.

Only Mean People Don’t Love Dogs!

In response to the senior citizens who “really doesn’t know why people insist on bringing their dogs” to music in the park. It is because they are beloved members of the family. Just as you might bring a grandchild, others love their dogs and want to share good times with them and enrich their furry family members’ lives by including them in activities. If the presence of anyone else, human or canine, bothers you, there’s always the option of staying home. Please don’t begrudge others enjoying themselves. Live and let live… and don’t whine. TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING

Tent size and location - Calculate how many people will be on the camping trip and how much space they will need to rest comfortably. Purchase or rent a tent that will provide enough space. Multiple tents also can be used if the goal is to separate family members. The next consideration is where to set up camp. Look for a level area that is relatively free from debris. Clear away any rocks and twigs, as debris under the tent can damage it and make it harder to fall asleep. Families may want to camp a short distance from restroom facilities if they are available, which will make it easier for the midnight bathroom breaks that inevitably crop up.

National Day 8.7.23

LIGH HOUSE

While lighthouse technology has evolved over time, lighthouses were once widely used to mark dangerous reefs, shorelines or harbors. Today, we imagine how a lighthouse’s beacon of light offered hope to those seeking land in the midst of stormy seas and dark nights.

Wondering how to celebrate National Lighthouse Day?

Help preserve and protect a lighthouse by making a small donation to The American Lighthouse Foundation.

Paint or color a lighthouse and give your picture to that relative who has a collection of lighthouse postcards!

Protecting Honeybees

Provide clean sources of water. A small garden feature or a rainwater collection is enough to provide bees with a drink when needed.

TAKE A COURSE IN DORM SAFETY

Keep belongings out of sight. When preparing to move into a dorm, leave heirlooms or expensive jewelry at home. Once you move in, store your more valuable belongings out of sight or in a locked box or safe. Consider getting insurance for dorm belongings, which will protect you in the event of theft.

PAW’S CORNER

Cat’s frequent vomiting a cause for concern

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 10-year-old shorthaired cat Vic has always had a sensitive stomach. About once a week, he would vomit right a er eating. However, in the past couple of weeks, he has vomited every other day, at least. I feed him a canned food for senior pets along with a handful of dry kibble each day. Changing the type of food doesn’t seem to help. Is it time to call the vet? -- Carolyn

DEAR CAROLYN: I think your instinct is right on. A sudden change in a pet’s daily patterns o en indicates that something is going on. Contact the veterinarian, who will schedule Vic for an exam within a couple of days. ey will look for possible signs of illness or injury.

It’s possible that nothing will turn up on the exam. at’s good, because it rules out more serious issues. But the vet will have you be more observant than usual and look for additional symptoms like lethargy, insistent meowing or continued frequent vomiting. ey’ll also have you monitor his water intake to make sure he’s not getting dehydrated.

My name is Murphy. I have the best roommate. She brushes me three times a day, makes me catnip toys, gives me treats and lets me out into the garage (my cat cave). I love her more than tuna fish!

ey will also probably recommend an entirely di erent brand of wet cat food, or even a prescription food on a temporary basis. is ensures that Vic continues getting the nutrition a senior cat needs.

ink about any changes to Vic’s environment that took place recently. Did you bring a new pet into the home, or a new person? Was a room redecorated? Did you travel for a few days? Anxiety can cause noticeable changes in a pet’s behavior. Also, were any potential toxins introduced, such as a pest control treatment or a new carpet installation? Write down any possibilities.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.
